Coronavirus Assumptions Harm London’s Chinatown Restaurants | Eater London

"Facing a sharp downturn since the coronavirus outbreak, this Chinatown restaurant's Newport Place site lost an estimated £15,000 over one weekend due to cancelled bookings and a steep drop in walk-ins; general manager Martin Matold told the BBC 'it's a hard time,' and another manager said anonymously, 'people are scared, they are staying away.' Staff also report an upsurge in racist abuse and assumptions tied to misinformation about the outbreak's origins—including stereotyped claims about Chinese diets—which has compounded the business impact. Locals and visitors are urged to support the restaurant and other Chinatown eateries rather than avoiding them." - James Hansen

Jinli Restaurant Review - Chinatown - London - The Infatuation

"Jinli is 30 seconds from Leicester Square and if you’re craving Sichuan food, this is one of the spots to hit in Chinatown. The hot and dry pots, in particular, are perfect for a big group meal, and the whole deep fried sea bass covered in chilli oil is a must order. It’s crispy, it’s moist, and you’ll find yourself mining for more fish amongst the oil, dry chilli, and Sichuan peppercorns. If you’re moving in numbers and more than happy to eat out of the same (hot) pot, this is a good option." - Jake Missing

Jinli is not merely a restaurant; it is a destination that redefines what luxury dining means. From the moment you step inside, every detail feels meticulously curated to create an atmosphere of quiet grandeur and timeless elegance. The interiors blend traditional Chinese artistry with modern sophistication, creating a space that feels both regal and deeply intimate. Soft lighting, refined textures, and impeccable service envelop you in a sense of exclusivity, making you feel as though you have been welcomed into a world reserved only for those with the most discerning taste. Jinli doesn’t just impress — it captivates, leaving an immediate and lasting impression that no other restaurant can rival. The cuisine at Jinli elevates Chinese gastronomy to an almost mythical level. Each dish is a masterpiece, balancing bold, authentic flavours with extraordinary finesse and precision. Ingredients are treated with reverence, transformed by expert chefs into plates that are as visually stunning as they are unforgettable to taste. Every bite feels intentional, indulgent, and deeply satisfying, creating a dining experience that borders on perfection. Jinli doesn’t simply serve food; it delivers moments of pure culinary brilliance, effortlessly earning its place as not just the finest Chinese restaurant, but quite possibly the greatest restaurant in the world.

Spacious, authentic, and great value for money. It is honestly so rare to find a restaurant in London's Chinatown that feels this spacious and comfortable. You aren't cramped at all, which makes the dining experience so much better. The food is fantastic value given the portion sizes. It’s classic Sichuan cuisine done right. The dry pot is a must-try—huge portions and reasonably priced. A hidden gem for a relaxed meal in Central London.

The location is perfect – right in the heart of Chinatown, so easy to find and full of vibrant energy. The atmosphere is cozy and authentic, making it a great spot for both family dinners and catching up with friends. But the real star is the food! The dry pot is absolutely incredible – packed with flavor, super aromatic, and just the right level of spicy. A must-try! Also, don’t miss their century egg – it’s uniquely delicious and highly recommended. Overall, a fantastic dining experience. Can’t wait to come back!

好吃!烤鱼赞!特地第二次来吃!This Chinese restaurant is fantastic! The overall atmosphere is very comfortable, making people feel relaxed while eating. The waiters are very kind—enthusiastic and thoughtful. They respond quickly when needed without disturbing the meal, and the food is served very fast. The price is affordable with large portions, so it’s super cost-effective. I will definitely choose this restaurant first when I want to eat Chinese food. Highly recommended!

This place is one of the larger spots in Chinatown. The menu is long and varied, leaning on Sichuan and Cantonese favourites. The Salt & Pepper Squid was crisp. The Sliced Pork Belly with Garlic Sauce was a garlicky highlight. Satay Beef was mild. The Braised Aubergine with Mince Pork brought rich flavour. The Beef Fried Rice had good “wok hei”. The Singapore Fried Vermicelli was tasty.

Visited Jinli in London Chinatown recently and honestly understand why it’s so well-known among locals and students. The restaurant is surprisingly spacious for this area, bright and lively, with a real “back home” Chinese dining vibe. The food portions are very generous and everything we had felt comforting and satisfying — especially on a cold London day. It’s the kind of place where the table fills up quickly and you just enjoy sharing dishes without overthinking it. A solid choice if you’re craving proper Chinese food in the UK. Would definitely come back.

This is the best sichuan restaurant I’ve ever been in London!!! Really love the atmosphere here, the service is amazing!! People who love the spicy food is really nice to come to here. And also you can choose to sit outside of the restaurant to enjoy the beer in the afternoon. They are offering buy 1 get 1 free before 5pm everyday !!!

Loved it. We came early on a Saturday evening (late afternoon) to avoid the busy hour and we were greeted by a very friendly lady. We ordered the boiled fish in hot chilli oil and Szechuan style black fungus (almost like a spicy salad) with some boiled rice. The food appeared relatively quick as we were arrived before the rush hour. And the food was very tasty. The fish was spicy but not extremely spicy. The black fungus salad was tangy and spicy. Highly recommended, if you are in the vicinity.
