A Michelin-Starred D.C. Chef Debuts a Glamorous Singaporean Restaurant in Tysons - Eater DC

"Jiwa Singapura, led by chef Pepe Moncayo, is a deeply personal venture that connects to the chef's life and memories of Singapore. Located in Tysons Galleria, McLean, Virginia, the restaurant features high-end spins on Singaporean street foods with a seafood-focused menu. The decor is bold and opulent, with deep blue and purple tones and traditional Singaporean patterns. The menu is divided into street food, hawker classics, and Jiwa signatures, with dishes like chicken satay, chili crab, and Laksa. Pandan is a key ingredient in the dessert menu. The restaurant also offers a vibrant drink menu and a global wine list. Jiwa Singapura is open Wednesday through Sunday, with plans to expand hours and introduce a tasting menu." - Emily Wishingrad

It was such a pleasant experience. Chicken satay was very soft with full of herb touched. Sweet and sour pork was savory. Kids loved crispy part of seafood mixed noodle. Food overall not sweet or salty at all. I felt all the plates were boosting of natural flavor without using much chemical seasonings. I will be back to experience other dishes soon.

Good ambience with a cool interior. Food service was pretty fast, and food was generally good. Lemak chili chicken was tender, flavorful, and rich. The carrot cake was a pretty unique twist on daikon and the texture between the cooked sweet daikon with the sourness of the pickled daikon worked very well together. Nasi lemak was a bit disappointing (flavor wasn't too special mostly just salty). Lala kam heong had very small clams that just aren't worth it for the price. Overall wouldn't crave it again but would come back if looking for a more upscale Singaporean restaurant

The restaurant is fantastic. The atmosphere, service, outdoor seating, and the view are excellent. The waiter did a great job describing the menu. He took his time with everything and answered every question with detailed responses. I’ve been to numerous countries, and the quality of food and preparation was just fantastic at this restaurant. If you’re cultured and love this style of food, you will love this restaurant. Start with the sangria with great taste. The sweet and sour pork was amazing, well seasoned, great mix with the sauce and the rice, and the chicken Satay is a great dish to try as well. I loved the Wagyu beef and the whole fish I would highly recommend getting either one. If you are coming here and looking for a big meal to indulge in, then this place isn’t for you because this place isn’t meant for big dinners and oversized portions of food. Great restaurant; try this place, enjoy the view outside with friends or loved ones, and soak in a great experience. I will be going back to the restaurant. It has my recommendation 👏🏽

Some people said it is not authentic Singaporean food, but I think this is a pretty good southeastern Asian fusion. I recommend the spicy crab as entree. It’s fresh with little bit sweet and spicy sauce. The decorations in the restaurant is elegant, and u can see the merlion outdoor. The portion of entree is enough but the appetizer is small. Overall I think the service and food is good here

Expecting a spicier experience. Most of the dishes had a sweeter sauce than I prefer. The two most expensive items we ordered were fairly lackluster ( whole fish, chili crab). Small plates add up pretty quickly. The place has a nice modern vibe.

Uneven quality of high-priced dishes combined with uneven service from our primary waiter made this a disappointing experience. The elegant decor and collaborative support from other staff could not offset these major gaps, Jiwa Singapura falls short. We started with the Roti Prata (hand-folded bread, curry sauce) and it was incredibly bland. The curry sauce had an odd flavor, neither my wife or I enjoyed it. Next it was the Popiah (fresh spring roll with shitake, vegan mushroom XO sauce) and these were quite good, remarkably distinct flavors and beautiful presentation. Our last small plate was the Salted Egg Shrimp (sauteed shrimps, salted duck egg, chili, curry leaves) and this was also very good, tasty savory flavor in the sauce and succulent shrimp. Onto the large plates, and the much-hyped Char Kway Teow (wok-fried flat rice noodles, squid, shrimp, and chinese sausage) was at best middling in flavor, a disappointment. Next was the Vegetable Fried Rice (wok-fried rice, market vegetables, chili, burnt onion) and while quite simple, it was well executed again with some distinctive flavor. Our main item was the Chili Crab (snow crab, chili sauce, mantou buns) and while I enjoyed all the touches and the bold presentation, the sauce itself was lackluster and didn't meet the freshness of the snow crab. The buns were a nice treat however. Our desserts were excellent and salvaged the disappointments in the prior courses. The Sago Gula Melaka (young coconut sorbet, coconut ice, sago, gula melaka syrup, nata de coco) is brimming with tropical flavors, and beautifully served; probably the only must try on the menu. The Pandan Semifreddo (plum sorbet, coconut basil cream, coconut toasted rice powder) earned points for presentation and creativity, one of the most unique desserts I've ever tried and also recommended. Our server was nice and well intentioned but left us stranded between courses multiple times, forgot to bring out an item that was requested to accompany our food, and seemed a bit overwhelmed. In contrast, the other staff was almost always there to offer help when they saw us waiting. Beautiful decor, with a lovely center piece floating above a seating arrangement that radiates out from the core.

I had a wonderful experience at Jiwa Singapura. I went to dinner with a friend to celebrate our birthdays and had the tasting menu and a cocktail. Everything was great! Loved how our servers were very knowledgeable and described every dish with detail. Would definitely visit again.

A bit hard to find, located next to the cmx movie theater. Went for lunch, not having Singaporean food wasn't sure what to expect from all the negative reviews. The interior is beautiful and the service and food was great. Started off with a 'carrot cake' which was neither cake or carrots but instead a very flavorful dish if daikon cooked and charred as well as fresh ones. We also had the fried fish and wok fried noodles. Really wanted to try the snow crab but it was a bit too much work for lunch. I did ask several times if they could crack the snow crab legs for us with an extra cost but they could not accommodate. Otherwise excellent for lunch and may try again for dinner.
