"Plenty of restaurants serve good soup dumplings, but Joe's is the one that kickstarted New York's obsession when it opened in Flushing in 1994. Filled with a scalding broth, these purse-shaped dumplings were an immediate hit." - Eater Staff

"New York has an obsession with xiao long bao, or soup dumplings, which originated in 19th-century Shanghai. One of the city’s go-to institutions is Joe’s Shanghai, which launched in Flushing, Queens, in 1994 and became so popular that it opened a second location in Manhattan’s Chinatown the next year. To this day, locals and tourists alike crowd both spaces for a taste of the handmade dumplings filled with hot, meaty broth, which are rolled and steamed to order. Featuring a thin skin made from flour and water, they come in two flavors: pork meat and crab with pork meat." - Natalie Beauregard

"Diners at this venerable Flushing institution are greeted with menus and a dish of black vinegar dipping sauce, as it’s practically a given that you’ll be ordering their famous xiao long bao here." - The MICHELIN Guide

Disappointing experience. The dumplings had the thickest skin ever - and was super chewy. Tofu was alright but nothing special. Service was terrible as they spilt a dish of sauce onto one of our party, gave two dipping plates for a table of 3, barely provided and service but their bills include a mandatory 15% service charge. Also, cash only.

It used to be very good years ago but not anymore, the taste has changed not only the soup dumplings but the other dishes I’ve ordered.& I think the dishes is overpriced. The seat is really tight and the floor is really slippery just like years ago, walk with caution!

Our go to place for XLB! The service is good and friendly by Flushing standard. The food is consistent over the past 20+ years. Our favorites are XLB, scallion pancake, Shanghai thick noodles, salt and pepper calamari and the fish head casserole. Cash only.

With several options for Xiao Long Bao (XLB) in Flushing, Joe's is definitely our top pick for NYC. There are 3 locations throughout NYC, and we frequent the Flushing location the most since we live in Flushing. Given our gold standard of XLB is set by Ding Tai Fung (none in NYC), Joe's is the only place that satisfies our craving for XLB. Joe's gets a lot of undeserved hate just because it's "Americanized." Yes, they've got an Americanized name, the menu has English translations, and all the servers speaks English with a friendly attitude, but that's about the extent of "American" as Joe's gets. Don't believe me? Just look at the stupid fish tank in the front of the store for Feng Shui purposes. All the classic Shanghai dishes are present and done well on the menu. Some of our favorites are the braised sea cucumber, seaweed fish, and the fish head soup. Parking is impossible as with most restaurants in Flushing. The place is cash only, so be sure to come strapped or pay the service fee for the ATM on site. PSA: there are small pieces of crab shells in the crab flavored XLB, don't be alarmed if you get some crunch while biting into the XLB. I think Joe's does this to show that real crabs were used in the making of the XLB.

Worth the bib gourmand designation it has in the Michelin guide. Unpretentious and solid service with large portions of tasty food. It’s certainly Americanized Chinese food but many of the more traditional dishes are still nestled into the menu. Pro tip that a service charge is included in the bill precluding the need to tip.

What a great week. Joe's Shanghai is another great place I dined at, just Wow! So Yes! Try this place for authentic Chinese food. I had the Pork Soup Dumplings and a Scallop pancake. It was a first for me. I enjoyed it so much brought some home for my son to try. Can't wait to go and try something else. Oh Yeah, it's cash only but prices are fair.

Definitely your traditional Chinese food. I’ve heard the hype about the soup dumplings and wanted to try it out. Definitely delicious and the price is reasonable for what you get. We also ordered other dishes, all were fantastic and came out fresh. The wait time to get the food was decent as well. The only downfall is they don’t take reservations and sometimes the wait can be lengthy. Also, they only take cash. So make sure you have cash on you. If not, there’s an ATM around the corner.
