This Is the Ultimate Destination for Cajun and Creole Cuisine

"For some of the best boudin in Lafayette (a superlative that often equates to fightin’ words among locals), Johnson's Boucaniere has been continuing a family tradition since 1937 and serves boudin, smoked sausages, and tasso." - Anne Roderique-Jones

Where to Find the Absolute Best Boudin in South Louisiana

"What started in 1937 as a family owned dry goods and meat market three generations ago in Eunice is now Johnson’s Boucaniére in downtown Lafayette run by granddaughter Lori Johnson Walls. Barbecue, smoked meats, plate lunches, and sandwiches are the menu’s anchor here, but specialty meats are still a big draw. Besides boudin, there is tasso, fresh and smoked pork, or pork and beef sausage, all available by the pound. Pitmaster Greg Walls is also married to the boss." - Beth D'Addono

3 Best Day Trips from New Orleans

"This simple yellow building with a rickety-looking wooden porch looks somewhat anonymous, aside from a hand-written specials board outside and a basic patio attached to the side. If you didn’t know what a "boucaniere" was you’d drive straight past it, but once you know that it means "a place for smoking meats," you won’t make that mistake again. The dedication here—whether to pork, chicken or brisket—truly is a delight to behold. You can order individual portions of each, or have the kitchen whip up a sandwich or salad bowl. Cajun classics such as gumbo and boudin sausage complete a mouthwatering picture. It’s one of those casual spots that has an underlying seriousness about what they serve and is going to impress any BBQ fan." - Paul Oswell

Google
Great little BBQ joint near just a few minutes drive off the highway. Service is very friendly and the selection of BBQ cuts and sides is just what you need for a nice lunch or takeaway. - Value for money? Yes - Worth a detour? A short one - Best for (occasion)? Roadside BBQ when on a trip - Would I go back? Yes

Google
First time eating here. OMG the food is delicious, perfectly seasoned. The Customer service is very friendly, love the atmosphere of the place. Clean very welcoming restaurant. I definitely will be back. Great job to everyone who works here you all make it awesome.

Google
What a fun place to eat. Got the Boudin stuffed grilled cheese and it was as good as it sounded. Delicious. And I'm dying to know how they make this potato salad. Amazing.

Patrick Luster

Google
The location is great and the service for the most part is also great. My only complaint is that they double charged me for something and I didn’t realize it until after I had left. But they corrected it after I called so I give them a huge boost for that. The food just wasn’t what I was hoping it would be. The brisket was tough, chewy, and dry and didn’t really have a brisket flavor but more like a pot roast. The corn was okay. The beans were okay. The only thing I really enjoyed was the boudin, but I’ve had better boudin as well. This place was very middle of the road. But the staff and the building were nice. If I went again I would try to get there early to try something other than the brisket.

Google
Meaning special (brunch addition) with an added egg for the win. This was perfect in every way. It is a filling and delicious. Fried boudin ball (family recipe), cheddar cheese, strawberry jam on a biscuit. The marriage of savory and sweet in my mouth was a wonderful celebration of the south!!! Got an extra boudin ball on the side for good measure and was happy with that choice. Landing here late on a Sunday will limit your options, but you will find something to satisfy because there’s no wrong choice.

Google
10/10 food just wish they had brisket sandwiches on sunday Great customer services good vibe

Frozencajun

Google
Had the brisket and while decent for the area not even close the best I have had and also only 4 small slices. The 3 sides (corn, dirty rice, and baked beans) were again good not great.

Luke Bourque

Google
My wife just got home with a brisket BBQ plate lunch. NASTY sides with tiny portions of food. The Maque Choux is 100% corn from a can. And it has a gross soapy taste to it. Insulting to serve cajuns this dish. The rice dressing is good, but a TINY scoop of it. The baked beans are disgusting Texas style pinto beans with huge pieces of onions. I used to love this place, but what the heck is going on over there now?!

Pretty good food. Are there for breakfast. Decent prices. Maybe just not quite memorable enough to go back.

Yelp
Great food and people. Everything we had was amazing. My son stole all my Boudin after eating three huge pancakes. The staff was great and love the history and character of the buil

Yelp
I came here on a Sunday. It is a site for sure. The restaurant is basically a house with add on's to have a porch in the front and the back. You have to climb stairs or there is a ramp if you need. The logistics are kid of bad between ordering your food to finding a place to sit to getting your food. You wat in line to order your food in this tiny, adorable cajun shop. The sad thing is on Sunday, like most restaurants, they have to change their menu on Sundays and they don't have hot boudin available on Sundays! But I digress, besides that, they did offer lots of other delicious items. So while waiting in line, there only one door that enter. I would reconsider building an IN and an OUT door to make things smoother, since people are waiting in the door way, and food bussers are trying to go in and out of that same door, and customers after paying are also trying to go out of that same door. Once we got through zig zag, we went back out on the porch, which has seating or we can enter through another door - which I was somehow would have been connected to the food order section - and sat in there. There was plenty of seating throughout. The fans kept air flow. Clean bathroom available. I ordered the boudin balls trey, a pork belly double biscuit, and a boudin biscuit to try a variety. The boudin balls were good, crispy, small, more rice to meat ratio and full of yummy somewhat spicy heat. Very good boudin balls. Then the boudin biscuit was good, I think there was added bacon in there, but I liked the balls better. The pork belly biscuit came with some tartar sauce with some heat type sauce on it, my god! That was great!! That was actually my favorite. The staff were all smiling and friendly. I will be bac for that hot boudin, but I do wish the logistics of the place were easier without getting rid of the cajun charm of it.

Yelp
Johnson's is my absolute favorite restaurant in Lafayette. Everything on the menu is so delicious. They have their own smokers to cook their meats to perfection. All the workers are super friendly and in the hundreds of times I've gone they have never messed up an order. My favorites are the stuffed grilled cheese sandwiches with either pulled pork or brisket. The sandwich with a bag of chips or a link of boudin is a solid lunch. The brisket over rice and gravy with green beans and mac n cheese is my go-to Friday lunch that I can usually make 2 meals out of (if I can practice self control and not eat it all at lunch). On the weekends they have their brunch specials and I enjoy building my own biscuit with brisket, egg and cheese. Depending on the time of year, they'll have a Ragin Cajun sandwich that's packed with awesome flavor. And during Lent they have fish options that are super tasty as well. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. There's a side parking lot with some spillover into the grass lot but parking usually isn't a problem. There's patio seating and they close off part of the patio with air conditioning or heat for comfortable dining. They offer contactless payment. Service is usually very quick which is ideal for short lunch breaks. They're located in walking distance of downtown and the saint streets. The employees get to know the customers by name and you'll see many familiar faces/repeat customers. I only wish they were also open for dinner but then I'd probably need a bigger waistband. If you've never eaten here, add this to the top of your list immediately.

Yelp
I'm from Texas and love Texas BBQ and was driving through Lafayette for work decided to stop for some lunch. This is the absolute best decision I've made because I stopped here. The atmosphere is quaint and family feeling. The food is amazing the brisket is cooked perfectly and seasoned to perfection. The Mac and cheese is absolutely to die for its so cheesy and has the best flavor I've ever tasted. The potato salad is ok could be better just fell a little flat compared to everything else. Lastly wash it down with a Abita vanilla cream soda and thank me later.

Yelp
No more boudin T_T ! So sad. Learned about their history and taste on YouTube and boudinlink.com and drove from Slidell to get some. Unfortunately we ended up coming by too late after visiting the Tabasco factory. Staff was nice and informed us someone came by and even bought all the cold boudin. Boudamn. We got the Zydeco with mixed sausage and it came out prefect hot temperature with a nice crunchy outside and soft juicy insides. The bread was fresh and soaked up all the juices and mustard. Swamp pop: local soda with many flavors including satsuma and ginger! Goes well. Clean open patio space! Nice laid back meal.

Yelp
Service was great. We are from California and the young gentleman at the register was very helpful. Food was yummy. I had the brisket with rice and Mac n cheese and hubby had the boudin, ribs, coleslaw and potato salad and a small cup of jambalaya. It was also clean.

Yelp
Let me preface this review with noting that I am a local Cajun, who grew up eating Sunday BBQ dinners from our local meat market. Those fond memories are now just disappointing reminders that I could have been eating here all along. Thd BBQ'd pork steaks are THE BEST I'VE EVER HAD. Like fall apart in your mouth and perfectly seasoned. If your in the area on a Sunday, this is a do not miss kind of experience.
google avatar

Garen M.

Yelp
We came here on a food tour. Our tasting here was their fresh boudin. Wow! The best boudin I've had. The owner came and visited with us about their history and their food preparation. It was a good stop and I will visit again.
google avatar

Kelly D.

Yelp
The boudin was amazing! Shared a link and the boudin grilled cheese with my fiancé and it was SO FREAKING GOOD. We did both think the grilled cheese was a little expensive for its size, but otherwise a fantastic stop in Lafayette!
google avatar

Jay C.

Yelp
The BBQ here is amazing! Johnson's Boucaniere has been on my list of place to dine at and finally when. I have been missing out. This is the best bar-b-que I've had in a while. Everything was seasoned well. Service was great as well.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
I was already headed to Johnson's Boucaniere already, but the sign out front advertising "hot boudin today" made sure I pulled into the parking lot. I love boudin and the kind folks at Johnson's even gave me a sample to try before placing my order. It was fantastic and I ordered a breakfast bowl with another link. I enjoyed the meal, although the BBQ tots weren't so great. With a little seasoning, they would have been pretty good. The staff at Johnson's was super friendly. In fact, everywhere we went during our nine days in New Orleans and Lafayette, we met so many nice people. New York writer Calvin Trillin once wrote that the best way to eat boudin was while leaning against a pickup. There wasn't one handy while we were at Johnson's but the boudin was might fine just the same.

Yelp
The pulled pork grill cheese is great. It's a small sandwich but the perfect portion for me. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Scott R.

Yelp
Very good bbq. Had the boneless rib, boudin, Mac & cheese and Jambalaya. The rib and Mac were very good. The jambalaya and boudin were not for me. But overall I think this place is worth a visit. The menu has a lot of great looking stuff that I was not able to try.
google avatar

Paul J.

Yelp
Very delicious ribs & brisket. Both have a smoky flavor and very tender. The sides are good.. I'll definitely be back in the near future. Friendly staff with outdoor seating.
google avatar

Joseph H.

Yelp
Guess I don't know Louisiana bbq as this was the first joint ever I either didn't finish the plate or take leftovers home. Potato salad was pretty darn good but bbq beans cold and not too much flavor. But we go for the meat. Brisket had no smoke flavor at all and was swimming in some quite nasty rice 'dressing'. I'd swear the meat had been cooked in a crockpot. Never did see any bbq sauce. Enjoyed the Miller High Life ponies. Haven't had those in 30 years. Once and done.
google avatar

Dominik D.

Yelp
The portions are on the smaller side, but there's certainly something to be said about quality. Insofar as my garlic sausage po'boy is concerned, I've got no complaints.
google avatar

Tremaine R.

Yelp
Love going here when I'm in town for lunch break! My favorite are: 1: All the daily specials 2: The Parrain 3: The bread pudding 4: The stuffed grilled cheese
google avatar

Doug W.

Yelp
I rarely award 5 stars on a single visit. I can't believe there is corporate food in this town when you could just eat here. Support your local heritage and culture and dine with these terrific people. I ordered a single rib plate on jambalaya with a sausage link. My two sides were green beans and cole slaw. The reviews all talk about the bread pudding and justifiably so. I ate one of these too. I really loved the BBQ sauce they served on the side. Not too sweet with a great tang. Went well with my sausage (made in house) and my rib. Both are seasoned nicely and I really like their Cajun BBQ rub. Everything was excellent. I'm not a creamy slaw fan so I'd skip it next time. I also wish we didn't have to dump all that styrofoam and plastic. I thought it was a good value unlike a couple other reviewers. In fact, a really good deal. Can't wait to come back and try the boudin and gumbo.
google avatar

Meghan R.

Yelp
Mmmmhmmmm, that boudin is legit!! I'm not from or even frequent Louisiana often, so I don't get boudin or know much about it. A couple of years ago, I was introduced to it and then on my recent visit I came to Johnson's Boucaniere for boudin. Its very good! Flavor is right, temp is good, all good. The bbq plate(ribs) was alright.. the jambalaya wasn't anything to go crazy over- seemed bland in my opinion. The bread pudding was warm and though I didn't love love it, I couldn't stop eating it. Worth getting. Tips for going- know what you're ordering before you go. Counter guy looked at me like I was crazy asking questions about the food.
google avatar

Peter N.

Yelp
Always a great time when we come here! Service never disappoints! Food is always good! Finally got to try their gumbo, and it was everything I imagined, good like everything else here; and you know I got to get a side of that good ole boudin from here!
google avatar

Jordana G.

Yelp
Stopped for breakfast. Got a breakfast bowl with sausage (OMG seared slices of heaven), perfect boudin, and some meaty tender smoky pulled pork. Along with grits, eggs, potatoes, and biscuit this is a big breakfast easily shared by two. Add some great tangy bbq sauce for a nice drizzle of flavor. Also got a biscuit stuffed with pulled brisket and cheese and this is a killer bite with griddled biscuit and tender beefy pulled meat - so different from pulled pork. Local Swamp Pop sodas are a nice complement to the rich food. So sit down on the porch, enjoy the zydeco, sip on a local soda or byob Abita, and wallow in meaty goodness. A lovely start to the morning. I would definitely stop here again. Don't forget to grab a bag of chicken skin chitlins for snacking later - addictive.
google avatar

Barry G.

Yelp
Ok, I have never been here. Hell, I've never even heard of it before. The wifey suggested it spur of the moment and I said "sure why not". Ah, such great finds on Yelp. The boudin I'll say that I've had better (biased opinion since I make my own) but THE BONELESS RIBS.... oh my gosh!!! I didn't even know boneless ribs were a thing, but besides that the Smokey perfection on these dry rubbed, fall apart in your fingers little devils are NOT to be missed! I'll be back!
google avatar

Jane H.

Yelp
Clean, friendly people. Nice covered outdoor seating, and hot Boudin on a cool and sunny day.
google avatar

Purdy L.

Yelp
Friendliest people you've ever met! Authentic Louisiana barbecue! I had half a pound slice brisket and half a pound of their country style ribs! Did Not Disappoint! NOTE: THIS IS MY HUSBAND'S review while on a business trip who knows ribs and brisket way better than I do !!

Lionel B.

Yelp
Johnson's is in my opinion the best boudin I've ever eaten. I've loved this boudin since I first tried it at Johnson's grocery store in Eunice. Thankfully Mr. Johnson's daughter kept up the family tradition of making out of this world delicious Boudin!!!!
google avatar

Terry B.

Yelp
The pulled pork sandwich is one of my favorite things to order here Love the outside seating area Staff is friendly
google avatar

Carol T.

Yelp
I went on the fabulous Cajun Food Tour with Marie Ducote & was delighted that we stopped at John's Boucaniere's as I have been wanting to dine here! Thank you for so deliciously feeding us - and for the FREE samples of boudin & cracklins; I will be back for MORE!
google avatar

Max R.

Yelp
Classic BBQ spot in Lafayette, do not pass up the pork ribs and the boudin. This place just got a facelift with an enclosed eating deck and started serving alcohol. I try and stop by when I'm downtown l. It's a treasure for downtown lafayette.
google avatar

Tiesha T.

Yelp
I have so many good things to say about this place! First let me say my whole entire life I have hated, absolutely despised bread pudding! This is the only bread pudding I have ever had that is delicious. There is a caramel sauce on the bottom but the bread pudding isn't wet and soggy like normal bread pudding. As for the actual food here oh wow! Everyone says come to Lafayette for real Cajun culture and food and they are so right this is a gem in the heart of downtown Lafayette. The mac and cheese is seasoned to a T. It's not just salt and pepper seasoning either but I couldn't put my finger on what it is. My family of 6 each had something different from the pulled pork to the Zydeco sandwich and it was all delicious nothing needed any added salt or suggestions for next time it was all great. This is a BBQ place so brisket, pulled pork, sausage, and mac and cheese are the stand out hero's here. They play Zydeco music which is a local cultural music that reminds me of jazz, country, and just something original only to this region. You definitely feel like you're getting a full Cajun Louisiana experience when at this place. The employees are nice, the food is great, and the building is like a little farm shack but in downtown Lafayette.
google avatar

Riguel E.

Yelp
The slow cooked barbecue pork steaks were absolutely melting off the bone amazing ! The sides were also so great beans and potatoe salad spot on The staff is friendly ! highly recommend this place for bbq

James G.

Yelp
Ordered the Brisket plate and Pulled Pork plate. Without sauce, which is where I ALWAYS start, the meat was just okay. The sides tasted institutional, probably Ben E. Kieth stuff. The meat tasted a bit on the salty side and I figured out why. It was doused in saltwater, some sort of an attempt at a brine that actually ended up making BOTH of us a bit sick to our stomach, like saltwater will. I guess you can fool some of the people some of the time...
google avatar

Sabra B.

Yelp
Great local spot. I enjoyed my brisket biscuit a lot. The prices are great for an inexpensive grub. The vibe is fun and "very Louisiana". The potatoes were very interesting and had a great flavor. I'll definitely be back.

Mixednutz W.

Yelp
very nice place music not too loud. clean tables and great boudin and bbq. always like this place, sometimes you forget about it in that location

Muqsith M.

Yelp
Food was amazing !! Got the smoked beef brisket .. was tender ,juicy and had awesome flavor. We were on our way back to Houston...Stopped here based on review without any expectation . Servers were very courteous and wore masks. Try it out -You won't regret!

Brittney P.

Yelp
FAST and FRIENDLY service, delicious affordable BBQ, nice big outdoor patio. The boudin grilled cheese is something special, do recommend although it was my friend's meal!

Johnny F.

Yelp
Had the breakfast bowl without any add-ons since I wasn't very hungry and didn't want extra meat. Excellent large open biscuit with med sized egg but only a soup spoon amount of grits and two soup spoons of small cubed grilled potatoes (enough) - nicely seasoned with a hint of jalapeño. No meat included in basic, although got the impression there would have been at least a sprinkling since option for "extra" was a couple bucks I think. I'd meant to try the sauce in phone order (noted as a must for $.40), but glad I didn't with basic not having meat. I was charged $5.17 using vet (10%, -offering a TX noted driver's license), and cash (3%) discounts- but gave 'em $6 to keep. They would have gotten 5 stars had they had a tad more grits, a sprinkle of meat as part of basic servings since "extra" was misleading to me-(may be my bad), and had theirreceipt been customer oriented, but was inter-business focus as prices, taxes, discounts applied and total were blank, which would require them using a totally different register. But for a "blink and you'd miss it" little business, they're probably already a landmark for locals in the know. Will come back; nice & quick with answering phone at 8am to take order and was ready upon arrival at 8:15am, with at least 4 patrons already served chatting on porch as I entered. Johnny-Houston,TX

Yelp
Best boudin anywhere, ever! The Cajun smoked sausage is second to none! The sausage sandwich, house made bbq sauce, bbq potatoes, breakfast bowls and plate lunches are all delicious! Brisket was a tad bit dry but the smoked meats make you think about them the next day! Parking is easy and the place is nestled in the sweet, historic down town area of Lafayette. The only on site dining is the porch but it's always so quiet and pleasant. The owners and employees are always super friendly! Mr. Wallace loves to chat and has very interesting rid bits of info to share. We love Johnson's Boucaniere! We come every chance we get!

Eric G.

Yelp
The brisket grilled cheese and their links of boudin are delicious. I ordered them on Waitr and got $5 off using code Local5!
google avatar

Haley M.

Yelp
Got the Oja special again 5-6 years from my last review when I found myself in LA again and it was just like I remembered. Their meats are simply mind blowing.

Stone G.

Yelp
Would give 5 star but prices are too high for what you get. Workers are always very nice, It sure is good though!

Brennon J.

Yelp
Stopped in after work. Outstanding service probably The best steak I've ever had! 9.99/10

Chris W.

Yelp
Great food and service! I come by for lunch every time I'm in Lafayette. I've tried various things in the menu, but Drew's Special is a must try.
google avatar

Joetta V.

Yelp
Ridiculously fantastic food. Great people. Local is always my first choice and they NEVER disappoint.

Becky K.

Yelp
This place has the BEST chicken and sausage gumbo IN THE WORLD! Born and raised in Southwest Louisiana and I've eaten a lot of gumbo in my life and hands down, not up for debate, Johnson's is the best. I buy it a gallon at a time and freeze it so I will have it after Mardi Gras when Lori and her crew stop making it. I keep telling her that we eat gumbo all year round! The bar b q is awesome, too. But ya gotta try the gumbo! Great folks and good service, too. If you're visiting, don't leave Lafayette without having a meal at Johnson's Boucaniere!

Randy R.

Yelp
Another great lunch place!! Great brisket, ribs, gumbo, boudin, and many other dishes . Very inexpensive for what you get!!
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
Boudin? What the hell is boudin? Sure, I'll try some boudin. Ten minutes later, I was wondering where boudin had been all of my life. Between the boudin and the BBQ pork shoulder, I had two dinners' worth of food in my tray ... and to my sheer delight, it was just as good reheated as it was fresh out of the kitchen. My trip to Lafayette was entirely unexpected, but I'm absolutely thrilled that going there meant finding Johnson's Boucaniere. That alone made the drive from NOLA worthwhile.
