Where to Eat in Angel, Islington and Holloway Road - Eater London

"The decision to open a bakery and chocolatier practically equidistant between a celebrated bakery (Popham’s) and a celebrated chocolatier (Paul A Young) is one that bespeaks a certain confidence on the part of the overlords behind the extended Primeur / Westerns / Jolene / Big Jo universe. But as pastry chefs know all too well, the proof is in the pudding, and there is little to suggest this second in a planned series of satellite bakeries represents any sort of over-extension. Sandwiches are petite but massy affairs, more in the 40 Maltby Street mould than the stunt sandwich school of the late twenty-teens; bakes are a greatest hits of recent London favourites (cinnamon scrolls, ‘Basque’ cheesecake, babka) with some notable savoury options (sausage rolls, cauliflower cheese puffs) thrown into the mix. Chocolates are tiny, delightful, and currently only available as a mixed box of six: a perfect gift for chocoholics and Instagram aesthetes alike." - George Reynolds

Jolene on Colebrooke Row is an absolute gem for anyone who loves authentic, no-fuss cafés. The vibes are effortlessly cool and cozy, making it the perfect spot to slow down and savor the moment. Their sourdough bread is a star: fresh and hearty, I absolutely adore seeing bakeries that do sourdough. Pair it with one of their home-baked treats, and you’re in for a treat. The coffee is fantastic, clearly crafted with care, and the laid-back atmosphere ties it all together. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in London!

I love Jolene, however I had a terrible experience today. I always like the concept of having a small table with fewer seats, but this time I felt it was in agreement with the staff who obviously did not wanted anyone hanging around. One member of the staff sat nearby me in a bench and started scrolling social media which was very loud and as far I know this is disrespectful in any environment. The other staff member thought it was a good idea to just turn off the radio exactly when it played “like a rolling stone”. I mean, who shut Bob Dylan up? I got their clear message and I left feeling unwelcome. But not before writing this review in a very focused way, thanks to the silence.

The pastries were absolutely incredible and the coffee was perfect to match. This is a great spot to grab and head to the canal for a walk or enjoy islington in the late morning or early afternoon. It’s crowded but the staff is great and maintains an organized but welcoming atmosphere. Will definitely be back to try more of their croissants. Highly recommend the pecan croissant.

Jolene bakery was once among the best bakeries in the area, its loaves bursting with deep flavour and its flour mixes standing out for their interesting profile. Sadly, it has been on a slippery slope the last couple of years. I keep revisiting as I want to believe the old magic has been revived, but I end up feeling puzzled and disappointed. Their loaves still look amazing, but taste flat and too "white" and cardboard like, as if the fermentation hasn't stood long enough. I have re tried everything, from the seeded sourdough, to the newish polenta, the baguette being the biggest flop so far. Service is mostly uninterested and to the bare minimum, although their coffee and and cakes are excellent. Please Jolene, sort out your dough x

Great place, good coffee, but pain au chocolates have been stale and spongy on 3 separate occasions. Surely as a destination bakery you’d expect a croissant that doesn’t taste days old.

Tried the strawberry pastry which had a great bake but flat in flavor. The coffee was fine but nothing special

I'm a regular from the day it has opened. The bread and pastries are excellent, and the coffee is usually great. Unfortunately, today I've ordered a long black but got a watered down americano. When asked if it could be re-made, the response was it's how a long black is made, in that particular cup size... I find this attitude and lack of awareness of customer service disconcerting, rude and frankly, upsetting.

Amazing little bakery - quite a line up of people, and I know why, delicious pastries! Well worth a visit
