Best LGBTQ and Gay Bars in Houston, Texas | Eater Houston

"JR’s is the neighborhood staple bar with a relaxed vibe. The expansive space harbors three events at any time, meaning a drag show could be in one room, while karaoke and a RuPaul’s Drag Race watch party are happening in the others. Outside is a scenic courtyard patio with a fountain and water misters for sultry summer days. Shoot some pool, or sip cheap booze with friends; there’s always something to enjoy at this bar. Happy hour stretches from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., but you can also nab $2.25 vodka well drinks all day Sundays." - Lane Gillespie

The 8 Best LGBTQ+ Bars In Houston

"If it weren’t for Britney Spears blasting through the speakers, one might mistake JR’s for a dive bar. But the oldest gay bar in Houston is where folks come for mugs of frozen margaritas while shimmying to hyper-pop tunes that have probably done an Ibiza circuit. Even in the sweatiest of summers, you’ll see bargoers out under covered cabanas on their massive patio. The real show is inside, though, where go-go dancers perform and people toss out singles to the queen lip-syncing for her life during an emotional Whitney Houston power ballad. If you’re bar hopping in Montrose, put JR’s on your list, especially on “Sunday Funday” when drinks are under three bucks." - chelsea thomas, gianni greene

✨ Five stars for JR’s Bar & Grill—and a bonus star for Sterling! ✨ My friends and I (a group of six) had the absolute best time here! The atmosphere at JR’s is effortlessly inviting—super warm, energetic, and just fun all around. If you love the chill, social vibe of places like Axelrad, you’ll definitely love JR’s—it’s a similar energy but with its own unique flavor. No cover to get in (huge plus!) and plenty of seating inside and out—which we quickly realized is so key when you’re out with friends. The next spot we went to had no seating and we stood for over an hour, so JR’s earned our loyalty right there. And let me just say—Sterling, our bartender, was phenomenal. I ordered a non-frozen piña colada (first time trying it that way!) and it was incredible. Not only did I love it, but every single one of my friends tried it and agreed—it was next-level delicious. Sterling made us feel taken care of without ever being overbearing. Just great energy and service all around. We even met some sweet folks—shoutout to Mauricio and the group we vibed with! The crowd JR’s attracts is social, kind, and fun—zero pretension, all good vibes. Safe to say… we’ll definitely be back. 💃🏽🍹

Experienced JR’s for the first time last weekend and I was missing out. Would always go to South Beach but pre-gaming at JR’s is a game changer. The spacious, NOLA style courtyard had plenty of tables, cabanas and a nearby bar for seating. Inside they had kareoke, pool, arcade games and more bar seating. Drinks were delicious, great prices on vodka shots and super friendly staff. Bathrooms are clean and staff are always clearing tables of trash and glasses which makes it more inviting for new guests. Will definitely start our nights out at JR’s then walk over to South Beach to finish it. Best gay bar in Houston! If you’re hungry-Nearby taco truck sells affordable & delicious food for as low as $2/taco.

Google
The bartenders were decent but the one on the left side of the bar in front of the kareoke bar on Friday night with a black cap was so rude, mad, and horrible energy. He was not even busy. When ordering the bartender was pretty impatient and short with us—barely gave us a chance to order before moving on. The staff should focus on being more respectful and professional with guests.

Google
JR’s is hands down the best spot for drinks in Montrose. Spacious bar with great cocktails and good vibes. The bar staff was incredible too, and Matt took excellent care of us. We’ll definitely be back!

Google
We’re regulars at this place for many years. Today the bartender controlling the music, thought that we were in a nightclub. Impossible to talk, even with the other bartender. I went and asked the guy to lower the volume and he just laughed at me. His name is Chad, horrible bartender, don’t know why this guy is working there. We can’t talk, so we just go somewhere else.

Curtis Kooienga

Google
great bar. cheap beers and Milo the bartender was great. spent 2.5 hours chatting with him. The people were pretty friendly and I enjoyed the company. Will definitely come back.

Google
I used to really like this place and visit every night I went out, but I’ll no longer be coming back. First of all, the bartender said my friend didn’t tip him, event though he tipped $10.00 on a $50.00 tab. So then when two of us from the group asked for water, he said “Your friend didn’t tip me so that’s $2.25 for water.” My friend was really drunk and needed to sober up, so we bought it for him anyway. Then, they removed my name from the karaoke list after I waited in the queue for thirty minutes. When I asked the hostess what happened, she was dismissive and accused me of telling her that she didn’t know what she was doing, when I absolutely never said that. But she had plenty of time to put herself and the other hostess on the list and get on stage to sing. Overall, just a really upsetting experience.

Chris Savides

Google
If it weren't for the bar staff this place would be awesome. The level of arrogance is stunning and I assume based on the rest of the comments management seems unable to insist on a base level of respect for customers. The outside barman was either high drunk or both. The middle barman was rude to me when I asked if I could put my drink on my tab as I have an open account at the main bar. Apparently each bar is a separate entity. Bar staff seem very important in their own estime. See dictionary definition of prig. People are here to enjoy themselves not tap dance around the current mood of a barman. Bar service aside it is a really nice bar and well worth a visit.

Yelp
The most amazing customer service! Very fast and intensive. I needed a lowkey vibe like here after being in New Orleans

Yelp
Located in the Montrose District of Houston, JR's is a staple in the LGBTQ community. The bar itself has a rich history and unique sense of character. There was not a lot of patrons when we went but it was early in the night. The service was amazing. The bartenders were friendly. Unfortunately we did not try any food here but the drinks were good.
google avatar

James P.

Yelp
Good bartender and good dancers. Been coming here every Monday recently, very nice place!

Lawrence C.

Yelp
Last night, my friends and I experienced blatant racial discrimination at JR's Bar and Grill in Houston. We ordered two rounds of drinks, and I tipped the bartender on the first round. For some strange reason, he refused my tip on the second round. (See full review in photo)

Yelp
This is a fun hidden place to go out for karaoke! This place has three areas indoor and outdoor with great service. Drinks are very affordable!
google avatar

Sarah W.

Yelp
I've only been here twice for short periods of time but I liked it! It's a lot bigger than it looks - there are several inside areas as well as an outdoor area. I've only gotten mocktails here but they're super yummy and super cheap! I hope I can come back again when I don't have to leave super fats so I can try an actual drink. My friends say they're great!

Elvis M.

Yelp
Don't go in the bar inside this bartender who says is the "boss" gots a very bad attitude o tip from me really. Check for yourself if you will but the place music karaoke are great!
google avatar

Michael P.

Yelp
We love JRs for its beautiful patio and cheap drinks. But lately the bar service (particularly the front bar) has been quite slow despite times when there are not many patrons. There is also a foul smell permeating the entire inside bar that has been persistent for the last few months every time we go. We'll always come back because it's our queer home/family, but quality has been lacking.
google avatar

Colette M.

Yelp
Great vibes here on Sunday!!! They do Karaoke on Sunday as well....around 6-7. No drama here, just a bunch of happy people having a great time!!! 3 different areas and a patio with cabanas! Loved it. I didn't try any food here yet, just popped in for a drink and watch some Karaoke. ...will be back for sure!
google avatar

Samuel T.

Yelp
Used to like this place but now some of the bartenders are rude, one forced me out a stall to do "stuff" before his work shift. Another was to sassy to not serve me like where is the customer service at when you are out nowadays? Super lame , it seems like I'm not the only one here talking about it.
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
Amazing staff, beautiful patio and great pricing. This bar has so many things to do during the week & weekend.
google avatar

Devin E.

Yelp
Nice gay bar in the gayborhood. Cheap strong drinks, would recommend paying cash but that's usual with most bars in town
google avatar

Yelp
I am OBSESSED with JR's. Bartenders are so friendly and welcoming and always open to chat when its not busy. Monday night they have male Dancers who are so talented friendly and overall great people. I honestly can't think of a single bad thing about JRS. everything is fantastic.

Stace M.

Yelp
Love this place!! Great atmosphere!! Always a good time here. Love the courtyard area, music and of course all the great people!!
google avatar

Joshua R.

Yelp
The bartender Milo is one of the top tiers of Montrose! I thoroughly enjoyed great conversation and delish margaritas. He even provided snacks! #BartenderOfMontrose! I used to hate this bar because of the people of go there but I can honestly say my experience today will bring me back on a regular basis to see Milo.

Lee D.

Yelp
Bartender said after I just walked in. Sober. That I was drunk. Pissed me off bc I do be messed up sometimes... never here.. haven't been here in months.: but tonight I'm not.. and said he couldn't serve me bc he watched me sway. But I haven't been drinking a lot. Like wtf. But, you know... not a lot of blacks in here at all so I'm thinking maybe it's that. Wild though.
google avatar

Yelp
I don't write a-lot of negative reviews. Unfortunately I have to at least mention this so the "owner" gets a clue. We walked in sat down and was Immediately told by an employee that I was not allowed to have a backpack in the bar. I said "so what should I do?" He told me to put it in my car. I said I'm a tourist from California with no car. The employee summed me up and said OK you can stay. For me I immediately felt judged and shamed. So I told my husband and we both agreed. We had to leave. Im on vacation. I don't need to be confronted by a stranger when walking into an establishment. I was bring them money. Mr. Owner get a coat check butt head! OR at least a small row of lockers. I'm not giving this inconsiderate establishment my money.

Sharise S.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to go! Matt always has a smile on his face and makes the best drinks.
google avatar

Aisha J.

Yelp
One of my fave iconic bars in Montrose. Great drink selection & prices. They always have a fire ass DJ outside and I absolutely love the karaoke. I come here to unwind and hang with the girls ‍
google avatar

Veronika S.

Yelp
Really strange thing. They have a rule that if you have a large bag they won't let you in. So ladies, if you're planning on coming here, make sure to bring a small purse. I honestly don't understand it, but they'll turn you away. I tried to ask the door guy some specifics around it so that next time I could bring the right size bag, and he just kept saying. It's owners rules, it's owners rules. He wouldn't even listen to me. I even offered multiple times for him to look inside, but he wouldn't. So, just beware.
google avatar

Bella A.

Yelp
I LOVE JRS! Everything about it is fun: the karaoke, the atmosphere, everything. But last time I went the bouncer at the door was SO UNREASONABLY RUDE. He wouldn't let us in because we were jokingly hitting a bush outside. A JOKE. The bouncer was mean and yelling at us? Like he intimidated by a group of tiny girls? He was MAD. He genuinely does not deserve a job that gives him "power" over who comes in. AND GUESS WHAT? BITCHES STILL GOT IN. WE TALKED TO THE MANAGER AND HE SAID THE BOUNCER IS A WEIRDO AND LET US GO IN THROUGH THE BACK. Don't have weirdos controlling your door.....?? OK BOOMMMERRRR

Annie D.

Yelp
The first time I came here I really liked it, the vibes were good and though it was packed, it was fun and worth dealing with the crowd. However I recently went back and it was later in the night this time. This time there was a strong police presence so as soon as the bar closed, cops swooped in and it was unsettling. Also a bartender very rudely tried to tell my group as we walked in that he wouldn't serve us as if we were too inebriated when our night had just started. It was really uncomfortable and we walked 10 feet away to another bar top and another bartender had no issues serving us. It felt like a targeted issue. Highly unprofessional interaction and will certainly never go back.
google avatar

Yelp
I love Jrs Bar and Grill it a place to go and feel welcome. I love it I recommend the karaoke side it's the best and the bartenders on the karaoke side I love them I feel like I am at home every time I go I will always recommend Jrs Bar and Grill Karaoke on Sunday Wednesday Thursday Fridays see y'all there Girl this is what I call church lol
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
Yummy the place has decent drinks, I have only tried a martini that my friend always orders for us, it I have not truly explored anything else. The spot is pretty neat and spacious, I like the outdoor patio it allows ample space to talk and smoke if you need to. I feel like the place could be a little cleaner in the restrooms but nothing too disturbing.

Yelp
Last December, I was desperately seeking a place for an after-work get-together. Requirements were good music, good finger food and friendly atmosphere. I came here a few times and left disappointed. They don't serve food. So why is it called "Bar & Grill?" I could understand "Bar" - they have friendly bartenders and awesome bar specials. The only "Grill" or something close resemblance to grill is the fence on the beautiful Mediterranean patio. I gave them a 5-star rating for this fabulous renovation. In hot summer nights, they turn on the mist machines. In cold winter nights, they turn on the fire pits. This has been my favorite place to unwind and enjoy the scenery. I drove by a few times during the day, this patio looks like an oasis. I couldn't resist snapping some photos. Years ago, I remember when me and my partner wanted to get some fresh air, we had to go to the crammed patio. This placed used to be crowded inside. But now, I see more people rather go to the patio.
google avatar

Leslie W.

Yelp
Yes, this is a gay bar. If that bothers you, don't come in and make it uncomfortable for yourself. We gays are comfy here and don't care what you think about that. Now...the bar. We go on Sunday afternoons. So this review is only about that. If you manage to get there for the karaoke Sundays BONUS! Always a great time. The new patio is awesome. Fire pits, misters, games, nice cushioned places to sit. What a great renovation! Whether it's chilly or hot they make it as comfy out here as they can for the weather. Drinks are gay men's bar stout. And they still have specials on Sunday for vodka drinks. I have spent a lot of $1 bills on beverages here over the years on Sundays. Pool tables, Galaga!, big ol' Jenga on the patio...so if you need to play a game or two this is it. We don't care for their half naked guy dancer (hello, middle aged Lesbian here) but if that's your bag they have them! Several bars open at all times. During less crowded afternoons you never have to wait for a drink. The music is a nice mix of old and new, techno and pop. In the afternoons it's not too loud. My only problem with JRs has always been trying to make new friends here. Come with a friend or several. I have never had a conversation with a stranger here passed "excuse me".
google avatar

Freddy A.

Yelp
Came on February 2nd, Sunday night, I was seating in the bar AS ALWAYS and all of the sudden the bartender Corey told us, in a very rude way, "I need those chairs"... I asked him why and he said: "that's how I can make f*cking money". Being a server myself I asked him if there was an specific reason and he started beingg rude and yelling at me. I talked to the managers and they only told me "he is new" and asked me to move to the side. Tragic. Just tragic. Disappointing situation.
google avatar

Christian M.

Yelp
My review is based on the policy of bags and not being able to enter the establishment. I completely understand the security reason for it but if we're stopping men with bags shouldn't the same policy apply to females? A concealed weapon can be carried in a small sachet. I guess to the manager of the place last night you assumed we were locals and drove ourselves to the bar even when you checked my Jersey ID. Suggesting that I put my bag in the car even when I explained I had none and none of our friends had any was some sort of insensitive. And yes I offered my bag to be checked but a not so welcoming, snarky and rude answer was given. But anyways, the place looked ready for the holidays from the outside, if you're in the area remember not no bring bags and if you do be ready to be left outside if you don't have a place to put it.
google avatar

Angelica G.

Yelp
We arrived for our friend's birthday and they require you to wear a mask to walk across the threshold but not a single person in a mask inside. But we had to wear one to cross the doorway? They said the owner requires it. Well the owner isn't getting my money. We can't give our money to people like this and expect sense to come back. So no thanks. Lost a customer forever.
google avatar

Ryan P.

Yelp
So I came into Houston for a conference and this was the first gay bar I stopped at in line of many. This was my favorite one of the night My bartender, Tyler, was attentive, charismatic, and overly positive. The bar was run efficiently and the glasses were clean (unlike another bar I hopped to that evening). While music was playing, it wasn't obnoxiously loud. There's a pool table and there were some go go dancers. My favorite part of the bar was the outdoor are connected to it. Another positive note, the bathrooms were well maintained. This will be the first bar I head back to if I return to Houston. Edit: power hour with $2 wells is amazing if you can tolerate well liquor
google avatar

Timothy H.

Yelp
I love jrs but i come after work. They do not let you bring in your backpack or computer and I've had it stolen from my car in the parking lots around there multiple times. Hey think they should allow you to bring in your bag when they allow girls to bring in big purses because my laptop is my livelihood. Seems like a old person made a policy and doesn't know how to run a business.
google avatar

Gio J.

Yelp
The host tonight was horrible for Karaoke I usually don't have a problem I posted on Facebook but they deleted my comment... the host said they couldn't continue the show because I asked when was my turn I only asked once every other host would tell me but this host made me leave the bar.

Denise N.

Yelp
We have been coming here for years. The last two weeks.... we've been suddenly and oddly thrown out after stepping out to the food truck across the road. The "door man" tonight refused us re-entry to retrieve a credit card left behind. Oddly accused us as being drunk. Waved the police over.... trying to intimidate us. The cops were shocked by the "door boys" behavior towards us. All we wanted was our credit card back. We eventually got it back. I guess our point is..... with Covid and lack of business. Why are these fake door men in place yelling at everyone? We are all so shocked and disappointed. Many of us have decided to hang out at Eagle instead. Fabulous place. Best of luck JR's.... RIP
google avatar

Jeffrey R.

Yelp
love this bar but the bar tender angel makes me hate it. extremely rude and always has a bad attitude. always takes forever to take my order and doesn't listen to what i'm saying. always closes me out when i ask to open a tab and then pretend he thought i said to close it. on top of that he over charges me. charges me $8 when the other bar tender at the same bar at him charges me $4. will not return as long as he works here
google avatar

Steven O.

Yelp
Went to JRs with friends for Happy Hour on Friday, November 5. As always, we had a great time. Love the frozen margaritas
google avatar

Chad M.

Yelp
The new patio is amazing. The drinks are always on-spot and the crowd is always FUN. Check out the Sunday karaoke and Super Sunday Show for extra fun. This is one of those gay bars that absolutely everyone is welcome and will feel comfortable.

Rodolfo S.

Yelp
Service here is very rude, they charge for tap water, and I had a bartender tell me he didn't have time to explain a drink to me. Would not recommend.
google avatar

Yazmin J.

Yelp
Cute bar on the inside, nice atmosphere. Great drinks. People doing the most, in a good way lol.
google avatar

Jareli B.

Yelp
I went last Saturday it has a good environment people is so friendly and nice, the drinks are good just perfect for me we got the peach jar, the only thing I would say the music needs to be a little more turned up type of music, and parking was so full. Other than that everything was great had a good night.
google avatar

Regi W.

Yelp
So I went to JR 's this evening and this is what I got . A half of shot of vodka and a full glass of syrup of blue curaçao . So sad that they have people behind the bar that has not had proper training. I prefer just water next time . Maybe if u gave me the sit-up myself I would have a real drink . Just saying
google avatar

Cindy M.

Yelp
I only gave them a star because there's a taco truck outside. Service was rude. They had table service and when they came to take our drink orders I ordered my drink they walked away and said non of us had our drink orders ready. Everyone was confused because he didn't even wait to take anyone's order. Then when we asked if he could take our orders he yelled and said we weren't ready and he had other orders to take. What's the point of being a bar tender if you're going to be unprofessional and can't work in this environment. Trash.
google avatar

Victoria B.

Yelp
My fav gay bar. They have it all. Karaoke, drunk specials, drag shows, hot bartenders. Hard not to spend all my money during drag shows. Those girls know how to fuckin werkkkkk
google avatar

Tonia Z.

Yelp
Absolutely awesome! Great drinks and bartenders--Chris you rock!! Ask him to make you a Long Island iced tea! And What a Taco has great tacos!!

Ivan R.

Yelp
So I've been coming here since I was 21 and I've NEVER experienced someone patrolling the bathroom. I've been sexually harassed in the men's restroom in the past so I feel comfortable in the girls bathroom. I thought this was a gay bar and a safe space for me to come but mrs Minerva got in me and my friends face about me just standing by the girls bathroom I wasn't even going to use the bathroom. I am the GAYEST man you will ever meet like why are you coming at me for being by a women's bathroom. I have been here so many times and used the girls bathroom and have never experienced this. I've seen drag queens in the girls room and other gay men in there. She was extremely horrible to me and my friend. You can do your job and not come across as insulting and judgmental as she did. Ms Minerva needs to not work in a place that's superior be inviting and safe for people that have always been judge for being to feminine. JRs do better pls. Make the world a better place and Fire her!!!
google avatar

Josh N.

Yelp
Being from LA and NYC, it's hard to come by a place this large, this cheap and with so many nice people! Came for Saturday happy hour, played jenga and got cheap drinks. Love this place! The bartender, Reno, is a awesome and a sweetheart!
google avatar

Joshua M.

Yelp
I came here randomly for drinks one night, and surprisingly this was my first time. Why I have never come before is beyond me. (Also before I continue it was a week night and not a weekend so I can't speak on that) I was shocked to see how nice it was. The atmosphere was great, it was clean (bathrooms included), and the staff was very nice and respectful. It really had a nice vibe the day that I decided to go, and I must admit I'd actually like to see it during the weekend! During the week it was great!
google avatar

Benjamin R.

Yelp
Kobi is daddy. The karaoke is amazing. The drinks are cheap. The drag is on point. It's always a fun time at JRs! Highly recommend :)

Yelp
JR's has been a staple to my Houston visits since 2010. Each time I have a new and enjoyable experience. The bartenders are always friendly and pour a good drink. They often have drink specials which make it affordable as well. Please note that they put a $50 hold on your card when you open a tab. The music is fairly different in every room of the bar which is nice for those with varying music tastes. The bar has a dance floor, pool tables and four different bars. The patio bar is a highlight of JR's with a water feature, covered areas to sit and numerous picnic tables. The clientele is mixed from young, old, etc... though no one ever appears to be pretentious. They have various events as well such as karaoke and drag shows so there's always something to see and do while at JR's. I'm a little confused about the "grill" part of their name because I've never seen any food options. There is a food truck right outside with great food but I don't think they are owned by the same people. No big deal, I don't go there for food anyway. I have no reason to believe you won't enjoy your time here. Check it out when you're in the area!
google avatar

Marigold S.

Yelp
Lost a couple stars due to one of the bartenders being rude. I purchased 3 drinks totaling $48 and the bartender had the audacity to shoo us away and tell me "you guys have to clear the area, this is my service area" wtf. are we not allowed to hang out at the bar area after buying drinks? Ugh so rude! I wasn't even rude to him first or anything which left me confused as to why he was being such an ass.
