✨ Five stars for JR’s Bar & Grill—and a bonus star for Sterling! ✨ My friends and I (a group of six) had the absolute best time here! The atmosphere at JR’s is effortlessly inviting—super warm, energetic, and just fun all around. If you love the chill, social vibe of places like Axelrad, you’ll definitely love JR’s—it’s a similar energy but with its own unique flavor. No cover to get in (huge plus!) and plenty of seating inside and out—which we quickly realized is so key when you’re out with friends. The next spot we went to had no seating and we stood for over an hour, so JR’s earned our loyalty right there. And let me just say—Sterling, our bartender, was phenomenal. I ordered a non-frozen piña colada (first time trying it that way!) and it was incredible. Not only did I love it, but every single one of my friends tried it and agreed—it was next-level delicious. Sterling made us feel taken care of without ever being overbearing. Just great energy and service all around. We even met some sweet folks—shoutout to Mauricio and the group we vibed with! The crowd JR’s attracts is social, kind, and fun—zero pretension, all good vibes. Safe to say… we’ll definitely be back. 💃🏽🍹

Awesome place to drink and have a great time either by yourself or with friends. The drinks are strong and affordable. The frozen house margaritas are amazing. The pitchers are great to share or just drink it on your own. There is karaoke as well. Definitely recommend if you wanna drink on a budget and have a great time.

Stopped by JR’s Bar on Friday night and Mary absolutely crushed it behind the bar. The place was buzzing, but she kept up with the rush like a pro—fast, friendly, and always paying attention to details. Her energy set the tone for the night, and the cocktails she made were some of the best I’ve had there. Mary isn’t just pouring drinks; she’s creating a great atmosphere. If you want top-notch service on a busy night, she’s the one to look for. 🍹

I come here regularly and the only reason is one name Matthew he is the best bartender here in my opinion. He is what I love in a bartender, personable and a really beautiful man. You can’t help but love him. The best of the bar

I love jrs and it’s always a good place to go for karaoke and a good time with friends. The bartenders are usually pretty good. They also have dancers too if you’re into that. And male dancers on mondays but be warned they aren’t very friendly unless you’re Latino/hispanic. If you want proof just come there and see for yourself they only mingle with a certain crowd all night long. But other than that it’s a great bar!

The whole experience was disappointing to say the least. This man was “saving” a chair for 15+ mins and I wanted to sit down. When I grabbed it, he snatched it with his leg and began a barrage of insults, called me out my name, called me the b word, you name it. I had a friend get security and security failed to remove the patron, even after he threatened to hurt me. This is disappointing as a queer woman. This is supposed to be a safe space for gay and lesbian patrons and here was a man threatening me for trying to sit in his “wife’s seat.” JR’s is supposed to be a fun space but I don’t know if it’s safe for women anymore. This situation was extremely blown out of proportion and security failed to protect the people JR claims to serve. What a shame. I don’t know if I’ll be back for a while. Definitely not on a night where security prioritizes a man’s feelings over a woman who simply wanted to sit down.

I came into JR’s Bar on Friday night and Mary was the bartender—she made the whole experience top notch. Even with the place packed, she was quick, super friendly, and mixed some of the best drinks I’ve had there. She really kept the vibe fun and made sure everyone was taken care of. If you’re heading to JR’s on a busy night, ask for Mary—you’ll be in good hands! 🍹✨

BARTENDER INSULTED ME After being straight up ignored at the bar in-front of the karaoke my partner and I went to the other bar before the patio. Not only did he come onto my partner WHOM I WAS CLEARLY WITH he also insulted me and said in confidence to my partner. Im never coming back here, which is such a shame because i thought as a woman of color this would be the one place i would be treated with respect by the staff.

sterling is the best part about this place. I love it. The drinks are cheap and I love the the atmosphere.

Mat the bartender is an absolute vibe. Came here on a slow night and but he didn't make it feel like it. Connected my friends and I with his regulars and had the whole bar top connecting.

My husband and I have been patrons of this gay staple location for many years and have seen many bartenders come and go, we have NEVER experienced such disgusting and disrespectful behavior and service from a bartender. This server ANGEL has no business behind the bar engaging with customers. HE IS RUDE, DISRESPECTFUL AND SHOULD NOT BE REPRESENTING THIS ICONIC BUSINESS IN THIS MANNER! I hope that management takes a very close look at its staffing focusing on ANGEL and making necessary adjustments. When we brought this to the attention of the manager on duty he seemed to already know who we were speaking of and I can only conclude that our complaint on this individual was not the first . I really hope that ANGEL gets the much needed attitude adjustment especially for working in an industry that is focused on CUSTOMER SERVICE. For the POSITIVE ... the bartenders in the main bar and the patio thank you for such fantastic service! Atmosphere here is really fun.

The demon twink bartender outside under the orange umbrella had an issue with my $5 tip and threw a fit when I tried to order another round after ignoring me for a bit. He made it clear that he didn't want to serve me again. "You're the one that tipped $5 right? Let me just sit here for a moment" and he sat on his chair and made a very hilarious "who's gonna love me" bratty face. It was cute. I grabbed my friend's arm and walked to another bartender and ordered another round and tipped him more for not being so dramatic. It was the first time I've ever been refused service by a child with his arms crossed. It was very entertaining. I made sure to wave bye to demon twink on the way out with a golden smile. I'm glad there's a bartending program to get kids off the streets. Thanks for giving me something to tell my friends back home. I love how cheap the drinks are here and the sass that comes with it.

Located in the Montrose District of Houston, JR's is a staple in the LGBTQ community. The bar itself has a rich history and unique sense of character. There was not a lot of patrons when we went but it was early in the night. The service was amazing. The bartenders were friendly. Unfortunately we did not try any food here but the drinks were good.

Last night, my friends and I experienced blatant racial discrimination at JR's Bar and Grill in Houston. We ordered two rounds of drinks, and I tipped the bartender on the first round. For some strange reason, he refused my tip on the second round. (See full review in photo)

This is a fun hidden place to go out for karaoke! This place has three areas indoor and outdoor with great service. Drinks are very affordable!

I've only been here twice for short periods of time but I liked it! It's a lot bigger than it looks - there are several inside areas as well as an outdoor area. I've only gotten mocktails here but they're super yummy and super cheap! I hope I can come back again when I don't have to leave super fats so I can try an actual drink. My friends say they're great!

Don't go in the bar inside this bartender who says is the "boss" gots a very bad attitude o tip from me really. Check for yourself if you will but the place music karaoke are great!

We love JRs for its beautiful patio and cheap drinks. But lately the bar service (particularly the front bar) has been quite slow despite times when there are not many patrons. There is also a foul smell permeating the entire inside bar that has been persistent for the last few months every time we go. We'll always come back because it's our queer home/family, but quality has been lacking.

Great vibes here on Sunday!!! They do Karaoke on Sunday as well....around 6-7. No drama here, just a bunch of happy people having a great time!!! 3 different areas and a patio with cabanas! Loved it. I didn't try any food here yet, just popped in for a drink and watch some Karaoke. ...will be back for sure!

Used to like this place but now some of the bartenders are rude, one forced me out a stall to do "stuff" before his work shift. Another was to sassy to not serve me like where is the customer service at when you are out nowadays? Super lame , it seems like I'm not the only one here talking about it.

I am OBSESSED with JR's. Bartenders are so friendly and welcoming and always open to chat when its not busy. Monday night they have male Dancers who are so talented friendly and overall great people. I honestly can't think of a single bad thing about JRS. everything is fantastic.

The bartender Milo is one of the top tiers of Montrose! I thoroughly enjoyed great conversation and delish margaritas. He even provided snacks! #BartenderOfMontrose! I used to hate this bar because of the people of go there but I can honestly say my experience today will bring me back on a regular basis to see Milo.

I don't write a-lot of negative reviews. Unfortunately I have to at least mention this so the "owner" gets a clue. We walked in sat down and was Immediately told by an employee that I was not allowed to have a backpack in the bar. I said "so what should I do?" He told me to put it in my car. I said I'm a tourist from California with no car. The employee summed me up and said OK you can stay. For me I immediately felt judged and shamed. So I told my husband and we both agreed. We had to leave. Im on vacation. I don't need to be confronted by a stranger when walking into an establishment. I was bring them money. Mr. Owner get a coat check butt head! OR at least a small row of lockers. I'm not giving this inconsiderate establishment my money.

Bartender said after I just walked in. Sober. That I was drunk. Pissed me off bc I do be messed up sometimes... never here.. haven't been here in months.: but tonight I'm not.. and said he couldn't serve me bc he watched me sway. But I haven't been drinking a lot. Like wtf. But, you know... not a lot of blacks in here at all so I'm thinking maybe it's that. Wild though.

Really strange thing. They have a rule that if you have a large bag they won't let you in. So ladies, if you're planning on coming here, make sure to bring a small purse. I honestly don't understand it, but they'll turn you away. I tried to ask the door guy some specifics around it so that next time I could bring the right size bag, and he just kept saying. It's owners rules, it's owners rules. He wouldn't even listen to me. I even offered multiple times for him to look inside, but he wouldn't. So, just beware.

I LOVE JRS! Everything about it is fun: the karaoke, the atmosphere, everything. But last time I went the bouncer at the door was SO UNREASONABLY RUDE. He wouldn't let us in because we were jokingly hitting a bush outside. A JOKE. The bouncer was mean and yelling at us? Like he intimidated by a group of tiny girls? He was MAD. He genuinely does not deserve a job that gives him "power" over who comes in. AND GUESS WHAT? BITCHES STILL GOT IN. WE TALKED TO THE MANAGER AND HE SAID THE BOUNCER IS A WEIRDO AND LET US GO IN THROUGH THE BACK. Don't have weirdos controlling your door.....?? OK BOOMMMERRRR

The first time I came here I really liked it, the vibes were good and though it was packed, it was fun and worth dealing with the crowd. However I recently went back and it was later in the night this time. This time there was a strong police presence so as soon as the bar closed, cops swooped in and it was unsettling. Also a bartender very rudely tried to tell my group as we walked in that he wouldn't serve us as if we were too inebriated when our night had just started. It was really uncomfortable and we walked 10 feet away to another bar top and another bartender had no issues serving us. It felt like a targeted issue. Highly unprofessional interaction and will certainly never go back.

Yummy the place has decent drinks, I have only tried a martini that my friend always orders for us, it I have not truly explored anything else. The spot is pretty neat and spacious, I like the outdoor patio it allows ample space to talk and smoke if you need to. I feel like the place could be a little cleaner in the restrooms but nothing too disturbing.

Last December, I was desperately seeking a place for an after-work get-together. Requirements were good music, good finger food and friendly atmosphere. I came here a few times and left disappointed. They don't serve food. So why is it called "Bar & Grill?" I could understand "Bar" - they have friendly bartenders and awesome bar specials. The only "Grill" or something close resemblance to grill is the fence on the beautiful Mediterranean patio. I gave them a 5-star rating for this fabulous renovation. In hot summer nights, they turn on the mist machines. In cold winter nights, they turn on the fire pits. This has been my favorite place to unwind and enjoy the scenery. I drove by a few times during the day, this patio looks like an oasis. I couldn't resist snapping some photos. Years ago, I remember when me and my partner wanted to get some fresh air, we had to go to the crammed patio. This placed used to be crowded inside. But now, I see more people rather go to the patio.

Yes, this is a gay bar. If that bothers you, don't come in and make it uncomfortable for yourself. We gays are comfy here and don't care what you think about that. Now...the bar. We go on Sunday afternoons. So this review is only about that. If you manage to get there for the karaoke Sundays BONUS! Always a great time. The new patio is awesome. Fire pits, misters, games, nice cushioned places to sit. What a great renovation! Whether it's chilly or hot they make it as comfy out here as they can for the weather. Drinks are gay men's bar stout. And they still have specials on Sunday for vodka drinks. I have spent a lot of $1 bills on beverages here over the years on Sundays. Pool tables, Galaga!, big ol' Jenga on the patio...so if you need to play a game or two this is it. We don't care for their half naked guy dancer (hello, middle aged Lesbian here) but if that's your bag they have them! Several bars open at all times. During less crowded afternoons you never have to wait for a drink. The music is a nice mix of old and new, techno and pop. In the afternoons it's not too loud. My only problem with JRs has always been trying to make new friends here. Come with a friend or several. I have never had a conversation with a stranger here passed "excuse me".

Came on February 2nd, Sunday night, I was seating in the bar AS ALWAYS and all of the sudden the bartender Corey told us, in a very rude way, "I need those chairs"... I asked him why and he said: "that's how I can make f*cking money". Being a server myself I asked him if there was an specific reason and he started beingg rude and yelling at me. I talked to the managers and they only told me "he is new" and asked me to move to the side. Tragic. Just tragic. Disappointing situation.

My review is based on the policy of bags and not being able to enter the establishment. I completely understand the security reason for it but if we're stopping men with bags shouldn't the same policy apply to females? A concealed weapon can be carried in a small sachet. I guess to the manager of the place last night you assumed we were locals and drove ourselves to the bar even when you checked my Jersey ID. Suggesting that I put my bag in the car even when I explained I had none and none of our friends had any was some sort of insensitive. And yes I offered my bag to be checked but a not so welcoming, snarky and rude answer was given. But anyways, the place looked ready for the holidays from the outside, if you're in the area remember not no bring bags and if you do be ready to be left outside if you don't have a place to put it.

We arrived for our friend's birthday and they require you to wear a mask to walk across the threshold but not a single person in a mask inside. But we had to wear one to cross the doorway? They said the owner requires it. Well the owner isn't getting my money. We can't give our money to people like this and expect sense to come back. So no thanks. Lost a customer forever.

So I came into Houston for a conference and this was the first gay bar I stopped at in line of many. This was my favorite one of the night My bartender, Tyler, was attentive, charismatic, and overly positive. The bar was run efficiently and the glasses were clean (unlike another bar I hopped to that evening). While music was playing, it wasn't obnoxiously loud. There's a pool table and there were some go go dancers. My favorite part of the bar was the outdoor are connected to it. Another positive note, the bathrooms were well maintained. This will be the first bar I head back to if I return to Houston. Edit: power hour with $2 wells is amazing if you can tolerate well liquor

I love jrs but i come after work. They do not let you bring in your backpack or computer and I've had it stolen from my car in the parking lots around there multiple times. Hey think they should allow you to bring in your bag when they allow girls to bring in big purses because my laptop is my livelihood. Seems like a old person made a policy and doesn't know how to run a business.

The host tonight was horrible for Karaoke I usually don't have a problem I posted on Facebook but they deleted my comment... the host said they couldn't continue the show because I asked when was my turn I only asked once every other host would tell me but this host made me leave the bar.

We have been coming here for years. The last two weeks.... we've been suddenly and oddly thrown out after stepping out to the food truck across the road. The "door man" tonight refused us re-entry to retrieve a credit card left behind. Oddly accused us as being drunk. Waved the police over.... trying to intimidate us. The cops were shocked by the "door boys" behavior towards us. All we wanted was our credit card back. We eventually got it back. I guess our point is..... with Covid and lack of business. Why are these fake door men in place yelling at everyone? We are all so shocked and disappointed. Many of us have decided to hang out at Eagle instead. Fabulous place. Best of luck JR's.... RIP

The new patio is amazing. The drinks are always on-spot and the crowd is always FUN. Check out the Sunday karaoke and Super Sunday Show for extra fun. This is one of those gay bars that absolutely everyone is welcome and will feel comfortable.

love this bar but the bar tender angel makes me hate it. extremely rude and always has a bad attitude. always takes forever to take my order and doesn't listen to what i'm saying. always closes me out when i ask to open a tab and then pretend he thought i said to close it. on top of that he over charges me. charges me $8 when the other bar tender at the same bar at him charges me $4. will not return as long as he works here

I went last Saturday it has a good environment people is so friendly and nice, the drinks are good just perfect for me we got the peach jar, the only thing I would say the music needs to be a little more turned up type of music, and parking was so full. Other than that everything was great had a good night.

Service here is very rude, they charge for tap water, and I had a bartender tell me he didn't have time to explain a drink to me. Would not recommend.

So I went to JR 's this evening and this is what I got . A half of shot of vodka and a full glass of syrup of blue curaçao . So sad that they have people behind the bar that has not had proper training. I prefer just water next time . Maybe if u gave me the sit-up myself I would have a real drink . Just saying

Very interesting to say the least. Once you find parking (on a Saturday night) the walk in heels can be a bit daunting so it was nice to get inside and find seating easily. No cover! Then again, most bars don't have a cover...but anyways, I was told by my friend that I probably wouldn't have been able to get in if I wasn't accompanied by him and his partner...odd. But I guess the gay bar needs to be kept that way--gay. I saw maybe 5 other girls in my general vicinity. That being said, I loved their $3 mango margaritas! In my opinion, not particularly strong, but definitely made my taste buds happy :) Dress code was casual. I wore jeans, heels and a fitted shirt while my two guys were both in jeans and t-shirts with tennis shoes. Restrooms were clean, though small. Each time I went, I was the only person (talk about privacy!) Layout of the bar was easy enough; pretty much shaped like a horseshoe. I came here on Halloween one year and I honestly don't remember much about it. I remember doing a once-around and then leaving; that's how packed they were. They have pool tables as well and I got my game on with the boys. Kinda funny though to be watched by a bunch of gay men, but I'm sure they were paying more attention to my friend bending over the table--ha! The music made me want to dance but sadly they don't have a dance floor. Guess that's why this is usually the pre-South Beach spot. We probably would have stayed longer, but none of us wanted to do more damage on the credit card when we had a bottle waiting for us at the house. I only take off two stars because the "A-Ok" is how I felt about it. Service-wise and atmosphere, etc. I rate 5 stars.

I only gave them a star because there's a taco truck outside. Service was rude. They had table service and when they came to take our drink orders I ordered my drink they walked away and said non of us had our drink orders ready. Everyone was confused because he didn't even wait to take anyone's order. Then when we asked if he could take our orders he yelled and said we weren't ready and he had other orders to take. What's the point of being a bar tender if you're going to be unprofessional and can't work in this environment. Trash.

My fav gay bar. They have it all. Karaoke, drunk specials, drag shows, hot bartenders. Hard not to spend all my money during drag shows. Those girls know how to fuckin werkkkkk

This is the best Gay Bar in Houston. It's both chill and hype. I usually chill with my friends in the patio, drinking Lime Margaritas talking about everything and anything. The drinks are not weak and are fairly priced. Also, they have Power Hour Saturday nights from 9pm to 10pm and the drinks get RIDICULOUSLY cheap! Entertainment wise - they have Karaoke Nights, Drag Shows, a Pool Table, and Video Games. Music wise - They play a variety of songs, ranging from 80's Pop, Glam Rock, to todays top 40 Hits. Good stuff! For a place called "Bar & Grill" only thing that's missing if the food! I'm sure they'd do a great job at it if they decided to venture into it. If that doesn't happen, there are several food trucks nearby (they're good too!) All in all, it's a great spot, the best in Houston. Made lots of great friends here, danced, laughed, got drunk, and made some of my best memories!
