Beloved Seattle Brunch Spot Julia’s Is Returning to Wallingford - Eater Seattle

"Julia’s, a beloved brunch-y cafe in Wallingford, is reopening under new ownership after closing late last year. The cafe, originally opened by Julia Miller in the early ‘80s and later owned by the Betd family, faced a breakdown in relationships leading to its closure. The new owner, Victor Morales, will update the menu to include Mexican dishes, with plans to reopen as early as next week." - Harry Cheadle

Google
Loved my breakfast at Julia's. It's hard to find gluten free waffles and I was excited to try them. They were terrific! The bacon was cooked into the waffle which was a great variation on the dish. The potatoes were a little undercooked but everything else was fantastic. The service was good but nothing stood out and nothing memorable happened. The restaurant was a little busy and loud but we had a good experience. I would recommend this place if you want a good breakfast at a reasonable price.

Google
Waffle and chicken was sooo good! Even I ordered for scrambled eggs with salmon but I got omelette 😅 the taste was delicious. Service was pretty good too. The environment was cozy. I would go back if I'm craving for brunch next time

We’ve been to Julia’s of Wallingford twice since discovering it, and it’s quickly become one of our favorite spots! The food is absolutely amazing, fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. We’ve tried the salmon and Denver omelet and the brisket eggs Benedict, and they were incredibly delicious. You can really taste the quality in the ingredients, especially the fresh vegetables. On top of that, the staff is so warm and welcoming, which makes the whole experience even better. Can’t wait to come back again soon!

Google
Julia’s is altogether charming. The service beyond great and the Eggs Benedict, seriously the best in Seattle❣️I’ve been on the hunt! The quality of the ingredients is clearly visible, even the lemon garnishes for water were plump & dripping with juice. This might be Vic’s first restaurant but with food, service and ambience this great; he’s on his way to being legendary! Take the challenge, there is no better Benny In Seattle at least for me!

Google
Great carrot cake and great lentil soup. Victor is very attentive and we had a great chat. Went there again and food and service are still pretty great.

Sweet neighborhood cafe with excellent food, attentive, accommodating service, welcoming ambiance, clean bathrooms. Excellent menu selection with good variety of breakfast and lunch items available all day and monthly specials highlighting seasonal fare. Gluten free pumpkin or buckwheat pancakes, waffles, French Toast and Eggs Benedict among other allergy friendly, vegetarian or vegan options - menu is clearly marked. Clean, well-stocked restrooms. Will return when in the area. Was able to find free street parking within a block and the neighborhood is darling for a stroll to walk off brunch.

This was my second time at Julia’s for brunch and this place does not disappoint! I ordered the California Benedict and it was cooked to perfection. We tried their Swedish pancakes and the homemade blackberry butter was a hit! The staff is very hospitable. Highly recommend if you are considering going here! Looking forward to trying their lunch options in the near future.

Google
Had a delicious breakfast here at Julia's. I order the chicken fried steak plate and was very pleased. My friend ordered the waffle, while he liked it he did mention for the price he wish he could've gotten more food with it, however I also insisted if he was that hungry he should've ordered a plate with more food like I did and not just a waffle as the menu described. So I'm not going to lower the rating based off his experience because he knew what he was getting when he ordered it. I think the price is fair, mine was under $20 and I got a decent amount of food. A large chicken. Fried steak, seasoned potatoes , eggs and toast. I gave my friend some of the chicken fried steak and he said it was fantastic so we both agreed the food taste great. Finding parking might be difficult though, we had to drive down multiple streets and did a few turn arounds before being able to find street parking and walking our way back. Our waitress was super friendly and the wait time was fairly quick. It wasn't super busy when we went around 9-10 am.

Yelp
I like to try and compare pancakes from different breakfast cafes and diners on my quest to find the best pancakes in town, and I enjoyed the pancakes at Julia's. The pancakes were nice and fluffy, and tasted good with the maple syrup. I ordered the "yum yum combo," which comes with 2 eggs and a choice of meat on the side, so I got scrambled eggs and pork sausage. The eggs and sausage were standard and fine. I was excited to see they had carrot cake, and I was able to snag their last slice of carrot cake on a Saturday afternoon. The carrot cake had coconut shavings, which was an interesting touch for both texture and flavor. To be honest though, the carrot cake was a bit too sweet for me. But as I am a great lover of carrot cake, I was delighted simply by the fact of its existence, the lone slice sitting on the counter, destined for me to eat it. Overall, I'd give Julia's a solid 4 out of 5. They do a good job serving classic breakfast food, plus they have carrot cake! It's a nice regular brunch spot for people who live in the area.

Yelp
*CELIAC / GLUTEN FREE REVIEW tons of safe GF options - the kitchen takes celiac seriously, and for every dish ordered GF they prepare it in a separate area (dedicated fryer, space for waffles, etc.) a quaint, diner-feel with very kind staff. We got the huevos rancheros (sooo good), the chicken and waffles (yum!), and the French toast (meh.) I enjoyed my meal + my time here, and I did not get sick :)

Yelp
We are regulars. Came in to have breakfast today and I saw a new item on the menu: avocado salmon toast and I decided to try. It was yummy! Apparently this is a popular item now and it sells out quickly so go get it while you can!

Yelp
Great local Wallingford brunch spot. I would stick with the classic breakfast items like French toast or waffles. Staff are friendly and attentive. Did not wait to get a table at 12:30pm on a Sunday.

Yelp
Excellent food and adorable neighborhood. Service was slow, but not a dealbreaker. Get the Baja scramble. It was delicious.

Yelp
Have been to Juilia's a couple times now and have to say it's definitely my favorite breakfast/brunch place thus far. What I like is the straight up entrees, with nothing particularly fancy. Just done well. Breakfast favorites that remind me of the diners I loved back east. On top of this the service is pretty good, and it's pretty spacious despite an expected weekend morning crowd. Both my visits here, we were seated almost immediately. My first visit I had steak and eggs, and it came out surprisingly quick but was good. Eggs were standard, steak was tender. Like most diner-esque places it comes with other side choices such as toast and potatoes. My more recent visit I had the chicken fried steak, which again was good. Tender and the gravy was nice. As much as I love Julias there are some minor snags. In both visits two or three waiter/waitresses come to the table in intervals asking if we'd been helped. In both of these visits we'd already had place drink orders and sometimes food. I'd think they'd communicate with each other who has served what table. Not terrible, but just comes off a bit disorganized. The other is the most recent visit my buddy and I had two cups of coffee each, one was a refill. I assumed they were one free refill. I later checked over my receipt and saw $9. This isn't fancy coffee shop coffee, this is regular ol' joe here, so that caught me off guard. Not a big deal really, that's about $2.25 a cup, but I'd have skipped the 2nd had I known. Those snags aside, I've enjoyed Julias and next time I want a filling breakfast I'll be back.

Yelp
What a little gem of a place! There are so many delicious options, it was hard to choose. We shared these two plates and still had some leftovers. The food was wonderful, the service was great and we loved our morning spent at Julia's. The only reason I could not give 4 stars was the price tag, I do have to warn you...oof. Was not expecting $9 for diner coffee...real bummer there.

Ray B.

Yelp
Good breakfast place with a extensive menu. Fast and friendly service in the heart of Wallingford. Servers seem to really care about their service and your experience

Janessa C.

Yelp
Celiac safe gluten free options! The staff were very friendly! I ordered biscuits and gravy which was not a traditional southern style, but still yummy in its own right. The biscuit was more of an English muffin texture. My friend with celiac disease ordered gluten free French toast, but they initially brought her the regular kind. When she double checked if it was gluten free, they apologized and immediately made the correct order. Mistakes happen and they fixed it, and she had a safe meal. The mimosas were made with orange juice that had pulp. Not a fan but happy overall.

Yelp
I ordered the chilaquiles with no sour cream and they were so fresh and delicious. I usually prefer a green sauce but it was red and I was not complaining. The chips were still crispy and the sauce was flavorful. I definitely want to come back and explore more of the menu! Amazing service and cute little area to walk around in also. Street parking was easy.

Yelp
Saturday lunch at Julia's of Wallingford. Service is quick but I got the wrong one just to be later compensated by an entire portion of sandwich :) thank you ! I ordered a combo- half turkey sandwich and half soup but was served soup and salad. Since the question is asked- how would you prefer your eggs? We say scrambled and are served omelette, but then why ask just to be reverted "I can replace it for you, but it's all going in the same place." Pretty ambience cozily tucked at the corner of cross roads in the middle of a busy residential neighborhood. The view outside this place was good. Parking can be on the road. Food was decent . Will give a full thumbs up to scrambled eggs with salmon and their tomato basil soup. This place can definitely do better has a lot of potential!

Vanessa L.

Yelp
The food was wonderful, fresh, and great portions. Friendly service and the restaurant was clean. I am glad to see Julia's is thriving.

Yelp
Julia's is mostly a Mexican restaurant now. Their pancakes today were dry, gritty and tasteless, even smothered with syrup. If I'm in the mood for a nice buttermilk pancakes breakfast I'll try somewhere else otherwise I'm sure the Mexican part of their menu is fine.

Kimberly B.

Yelp
This is such a great place! My daughter is 5 and allergic to wheat. This is the only breakfast place that have great gluten free pancakes!! They actually have a wide variety of gluten free options that are extremely difficult to find for breakfast staples, like pancakes, waffles and benedicts. The service is great and the people here are SO FRIENDLY AND KIND. This is now one of our top breakfast places in Seattle!

Neil A.

Yelp
Seven years later ... same good food, good times and giant drinks. Some things never change. We love Julia's!

Yelp
How are these ratings so low?! If I'd seen the reviews, I wouldn't have come, but this place will be a regular spot for me moving forward. Food/drinks: Gluten-free, dairy free blueberry pancakes! Do I really need to say more?! Just in case, I'll add that they have breakfast/brunch options. Bacon was a little salty, fruit plate was pretty but meh. Heard the biscuits and gravy was good (be sure to add extra gravy). Honestly, the pancakes, waffles, and other delicious things that are allergen friendly has sold this for me. Ambiance: Chill neighborhood spot. Plenty of seating. And some nice outdoor spots! Service: Solid. I'm impressed there was one person serving us all on a Sun morning, but he was friendly and really helpful. The pancakes alone would get me to come back. Thank you for changing your recipe; you've got a new regular!

Yelp
Few places live up to the hype we hear from other people. Julia's is one of those that does. Excellent food, awesome service, generous portions, reasonable prices. Highly recommended!

David

Yelp
Julia's is an incredible neighborhood gem! I've been here several times, and have had such a wonderful experience each time. First I'll talk about the service. The owner is incredibly friendly -- you may see him bring out food or taking your order. Aside from him, I haven't met a single staff member here that isn't super friendly. They really do things right. The menu is extensive, and has plenty of classic breakfast options from sweet to savory. I usually opt for the corned beef hash, but they sometimes have specials like chilaquiles. If you're into classic breakfast dishes, everything is tasty & to the point. This spot is approachable, cozy, and makes you feel at home. Id come every day for breakfast if I could.

Maren M.

Yelp
Food was delicious--scramble was fluffy and salsa was perfect on top! Good sourdough toast and perfect texture. Berry pancakes were very good with blueberry syrup/sauce/jam on top! Very fluffy! Service was amazing and food came out quickly. Both people who helped us were very helpful and pleasant. At 2 on a Friday it was not too busy, but easy to have conversation over the noise.
google avatar

Rachel C.

Yelp
I love Julias, they have great food. I was so excited to see Gluten Free PUMPKIN PANCAKES on the menu today!! They were beautiful and tasted nothing like pumpkin. So bland, and I don't think they serve real maple syrup - it was the consistency of Karo syrup - super runny and no taste of maple to it all. Bummer. BUT the service was great and the sausage was delish.
google avatar

Cindy B.

Yelp
Great breakfast. Excellent selection for vegetarians and meat lovers. Will come back for sure.

Tamara B.

Yelp
I love their crab eggs Benedict. I travel from Olympia to get this in the regular!! Highly recommended!!

Patricia K.

Yelp
This is a great neighborhood spot for brunch or lunch. Food, service nad ambiance are all top notch. Yesterday I had their chilaquiles and it was delicious. I wondered why there were so many poor reviews of Julia's on Yelp, but I see that they are all pre-2024. New owners took over this year and the place is so much better than it used to be. A note to Yelp: You should remove the reviews of the "old" Julia's, pre-2024, because it was essentially a different restaurant then.
google avatar

Jennifer R.

Yelp
What a super place for brunch! This place is busy and for good reason. Would suggest either on a weekday or early on the weekend at opening. They have mimosas and the best chicken and waffles. The "gravy" sauce is amazing and super yummy. Been here three times now and have enjoyed it! They are busy so if you encounter a longer wait or a bit slower service just know that you'll get a great meal!!!

Laura S.

Yelp
Julia's is back as a favorite neighborhood brunch spot! Their pancakes are awesome, the salsa is made in house, and you can tell the waitstaff truly cares about the guests. I missed Julia's so much when it was closed (and honestly the couple years before; you can see from older reviews how much the previous owners were struggling), and am grateful the new folks bring such delicious food AND heart.

Annika B.

Yelp
OKAY I just moved into the area and we needed a hangover brunch spot. This place was PERFECT! One the service was amazing and everyone was so friendly. The food hit the spot perfectly and the tomato basil soup was to die for. Will definitely be returning to this place soon. Highly recommend if you're in the area

Yelp
Under new ownership, the new and improved Julia's did not disappoint! With a fresh remodel and added menu items, the experience was fabulous! Victor the new owner is a delight and has personalized the experience to reflect his passion for the success of his restaurant. Plenty of gluten free options (the pancakes were delish!) plus cultural additions that were authentic and tasty (I am Latina, I know the difference!). This place is a decades old family favorite and we were saddened under the previous owner. But it has returned to fine form! Take the time to return and give it a chance !!!

Melissa A.

Yelp
Very good food! The food came out quick, it tasted fresh and was delcious. Big portions as well! Highly recommend coming here!

Jose C.

Yelp
Family breakfast, steak and eggs delicious The seasoning on the steak is perfect, service was also amazing
google avatar

Jennifer A.

Yelp
We had a great brunch here today! An array of breakfast and lunch items including omelettes, chicken and waffles, chilaquiles. Gluten free options. New owners are very friendly and the dining room looks refreshed. Lots of outdoor seating too.

Daerian R.

Yelp
Wow! I'm new to the neighborhood and have been checking out places that I see on my commutes. The food was incredible! I did a build your own omelette, the turkey sausage was sooo delicious. If you are a non-pork eater like myself you know how difficult it is to find a good breakfast item with an alternative meat option. I really love the customer service as well. I asked if my omelette could be cooked well done and they delivered a tasty omelette exactly the way I was imagining it. My omelette was perfectly crispy and had great portions of the items inside. I will definitely be returning here :)
google avatar

Yelp
I'm giving two stars because the food was sort of okay, but the service? Wow! It was comically bad. Have you ever walked into a place and immediately felt like an inconvenience, as if they had decided to close early but forgot to lock the doors? Have you ever ordered drinks and been told that you couldn't get any because the bartender decided to leave early? Have you ever had a server at a breakfast place tell you they were out of coffee, and then correct themselves by saying it's not that they were out of coffee but that they just weren't going to make any more? We were able to get three coffees after being seated, but after that we never saw a server until I asked who we should get to take our order. That was when we were told we couldn't order drinks. It was the next encounter where we were told there was no more coffee. At that point we decided we would just pay for the coffees and leave if they hadn't already started making our food, but since they had, we stayed, hoping at least the food would be edible. It was fine, although they got part of the order wrong the first time and had to remake one of the breakfasts. They did comp our coffees, which I guess is good, but I just wish we would have know that we were not welcome, we would have gladly just gone somewhere else!

Lidia A.

Yelp
The food was absolutely delicious. Very tasty the crepes were my favorite part! The service was amazing very friendly and nice people.

Emma B.

Yelp
Delicious. Good gravy what an amazing brunch. Nice service with smiling staff. All at our table loved their food; chx & waffles, French toast, eggs benny biscuits and gravy, excellent. Bonus the alt-milk for my coffee, two thumbs up.

Cricket M.

Yelp
Recently reopened under new ownership, Julia's interior has been refreshed with new flooring and a newly painted interior. New owner Victor introduced himself and was warmly welcoming. The service was excellent! There are new menu items and I was so happy to find a vegan tofu dish which was very yummy! A nice touch was the silverware tucked into specially folded fabric napkins.

Amy A.

Yelp
Great gluten free options for breakfast and brunch. Cleaned up the inside with new owners. Would love if they brought back the lattes and coffee bar.
google avatar

Tammy E.

Yelp
Decent brunch spot in the heart of Wallingford! They had been on my list for a while and we were finally able to make a plan to go here with a reservation for weekend brunch. I had been craving huevos rancheros and they did the over easy eggs perfectly runny how I like them for brunch. They were really short-staffed and two servers did everything on the floor for a packed 25% capacity space. Hopefully they'll bring back more servers when they jump up to 50% capacity. I liked that they had mimosas for brunch and thought they could have a more expanded drink menu - but the mimosas were good (no headache afterward = good bubbles and not overly sweet juice!) We had coffee with our brunch and they brought out a glass of water for each of us. As they were pretty busy the server never came back to refill waters but she did offer to refill coffee once - all in all a good experience. I can't say there was any one thing that stood out here in either the pro or con column. I think they could benefit from offering specials and having some seasonal fresh fruit or veggie sides featured - maybe something that is a local favorite like marionberry pie or goat cheese from a local farm/farmers market in a Wallingford themed omelette or egg dish. I did like that it was easy to find parking here and that we were not rushed. I asked if they were related to Julia's on Broadway and learned that they once were but are no longer.

amy l.

Yelp
We were happy to discover this long-time Wallingford staple has reopened under new ownership, with smiling faces we knew from a favorite spot in Ballard! They've given the decor a much needed refresh, the food was tasty, the prices were reasonable, and the service was wonderful - we'll be back!!

Yelp
Don't know why the rating is so low on yelp...me and my friend had a good brunch experience here. Not exceptional, but a good standard brunch. We went on a Sunday morning, and it was a full house. (Definitely seems like a neighborhood go-to brunch place) We both ordered a salmon benedict, and it was tasty! Poached eggs were cooked perfectly; we got that soft and jiggly egg white and the runny egg yolk that makes your plate deliciously messy! The proportion of poached eggs, English muffin, and hollandaise sauce was perfectly balanced. Also special shout out to the English muffin! They toasted the english muffin with butter, which adds that creamy flavor and crunchy texture. The only dissatisfaction I had would be the price...for the amount of food given, it was definitely on the pricier side. I substituted the grilled potatoes with fruits (+$2) and a cup of drip coffee was $3.5. The plate itself was already $17...

Yelp
It was okay place for brunch, service was okay food came out warm. Nothing stood up special. Went on Saturday early afternoon. Easy to find parking.

Yelp
Pretty solid brunch spot! Reasonably priced, spacious, and tasty food. I did get get served the wrong drink, but the cocktail I did receive was strong and quite delicious. Our waitress, forgot her name sadly, was amazing. She was super charismatic and had some snappy one liners. I ordered the chicken and waffle which was quite nice but did not knock my socks off.

Tomi B.

Yelp
This is a quaint restaurant in a lovely neighborhood on Wallingford Ave. I had the breakfast tacos and my husband had the corn beef hash. Both were delicious and well portioned. Our server was friendly, helpful and efficient. Will definitely be back again.

Elyse M.

Yelp
I'm vegan and personally didn't like the food here but my parents are not vegan and they enjoyed their meals. I also used a groupon. They charge a 20% tip automatically if you use a groupon, which if you do the math on it, only works out to a $6 savings ($30 groupon for $18. 20% of $30 is $6, so you spend $24 for $30 of food). I personally do not think this is a great deal, but again I don't really like the place, so to each their own. I called ahead to make a reservation as per the groupon instructions and that went smoothly. Day of, we were seated promptly and the staff was very friendly and helpful, although some of the staff were a bit scatter brained. Their website says they have vegan options but they aren't labeled on the menu so I asked the waiter what vegan options they had. He said basically just the scrambles and they could substitute tofu for eggs. The scramble comes with toast and potatoes, so I asked if the toast was vegan, he went back and asked and said none of the bread options were vegan. I then asked about the potatoes and he went back again to ask and said they were vegan. He then asked if I'd like to substitute fruit for the toast but failed to mention it would cost extra (although in retrospect it was on their menu). I ordered a scramble with OLIVES and mushrooms and received a scramble with ONIONS and mushrooms. I did not tell the waiter of the error because it would have been a waste if food that I was able to eat, but it was definitely not what I ordered. It was incredibly bland and I was dousing it with hot sauce every bite. My parents enjoyed the meals they ordered and their orders came out correctly.

Dale W.

Yelp
Great food, great people. I am a frequent customer and have tried most of the menu, everything is good. I would recommend this place to anyone. Victor the owner, is a very nice guy

Yelp
Will never be returning and will encourage all of my peers to stay as FAR away as possible. Came here for a fun sunday bunch and mimosas with my friends. I'm visiting from out of town and have always loved coming here. From the moment we sat down, it was very clear that our waitress had something extremely off about her and that our meal was not going to go right from the start. When we all ordered our drinks our lovely waitress checks our ID's, leaves the table, then returns 10 minutes later with nothing. She then asks to take only my ID into the back. She returns another 10 minutes later claiming my STATE ISSUED ID is fake and that she refuses to serve us. After we offered to call law enforcement to PROVE that my government official ID was real, she said she wouldn't let us call the cops on "her restaurant." Her explanation for thinking my ID was fake was simply that she had "never seen an Oregon ID like this before". Didn't run it through any system to check, just assumed it wasn't real and refused to even remotely try and cooperate. After she refused to actually check if my ID was real we decided to leave and not give them any business. Ended up going to another brunch spot in the area and had a way more respectful brunch experience! (cheaper AND better mimosas too!) We all were glad to find a new brunch spot and will never be returning :) I HIGHLY suggest not coming here if you have an ID from out of state. It's clear that the employees are uneducated and not trained properly to serve alcohol. It's honestly just embarrassing for an establishment to not know what a neighboring state's ID should look like. Not a good look... Anyways, skip the embarrassment and don't give this place business until they properly train their employees!

Yelp
I don't understand the low reviews. We had a great breakfast here with attentive friendly staff. Other chicken a waffles with gravy on top. It had a lot going on, and it was really good. Friend had the monte Cristo which he also enjoyed. Will come back.

Sabrina M.

Yelp
Cutest brunch spot! Great food and great service. The new management is really lovely. Plus I love all the Mexican brunch options and the eggs Benedict on the menu!

Rose G.

Yelp
We were one of two tables of customers for breakfast on a weekday morning. The oatmeal was okay, but a higher quality product would have been more satisfying. The ham steak was good, although a bit too salty for someone who is seeking a lower sodium meal. Eggs, crisp bacon and pancakes were satisfying. Service was initially attentive, but lacked after that, requiring one to get up and seek the waitperson more than once. All interactions were warm and kind, something greatly appreciated. The menu has extensive offerings and we look forward to a return visit.

Yelp
Bf loved his chicken fried steak. He said it was made right in the southern way which is rare in Seattle. I am vegan so I had tofu scramble which was mediocre. Yelp deal or Groupon deal is great though. I may come back if I happen to be in the neighborhood. But I wouldn't go out of my way to come here.
