Seasonal vegan pastries, bagel sandwiches, salads & baked goods

"After sampling other vegan cinnamon rolls that tasted like eating a tub of warm margarine (*cough*Cinnaholic), it’s clear that Just What I Kneaded not only blows away the plant-based competition, it makes a convincing dupe for ones with eggs, dairy, and butter, too. The cake-like frosting is on the sweeter side, so you might want to scrape a little off before digging in, but we love that this giant roll has a soft marshmallow-y texture and a molten center that's just on the right side of underbaked. Is It Better Than Cinnabon? No, unless you’re vegan" - Cathy Park, Garrett Snyder
"It’s hard to miss this bright pink building in Frogtown that glows like a bubblegum billboard in a sea of beige warehouses. Just What I Kneaded is a vegan bakery and cafe serving puns (obviously), a handful of sandwiches and wraps, and, most notably, decadent pastries that don’t skimp on anything. The cinnamon roll is a hulking, snow-capped spiral with thick icing you’ll have to manually spread onto each bite, but the effort pays off once you reach the gooey, cinnamon-packed center. Doughy cookies are face-sized, with puddles of melted chocolate throughout and flaky salt on top, and the ultra-sweet poptarts brimming with raspberry jam are finished with pink glaze and rainbow sprinkles. It’s a fun place to enjoy a daytime treat on a patio, but be prepared to share your crumbs with the local bird gang. photo credit: Jessie Clapp photo credit: Jessie Clapp photo credit: Jessie Clapp photo credit: Jessie Clapp photo credit: Jessie Clapp Pause Unmute" - Cathy Park

"Justine Hernandez founded her bakery and cafe Just What I Kneaded in Frogtown as a community space offering some seriously good vegan pastries, some of which are gluten-free. Find goods like vegan chocolate chunk cookies; gluten-free strawberry muffins, scones, and sprinkle cookies; savory gluten-free quiches; and vegan cinnamon rolls. In the mornings, the shop also slings breakfast items like tofu-scramble burritos and breakfast biscuit sandwiches; lunch sees specials like a cheesy vegan crunchwrap. Orders can be placed online to get ahead of the crowd." - Nicole Adlman

"Lesley Suter included this bakery in her Frogtown circuit, saying she wanders past it on the bike path when showing visitors around and praising the area’s unexpected, walkable character." - Eater Staff
"Some people may think the words “gluten-free” and “vegan” have no business in baked goods. But those people are wrong, and obviously have never been to Just What I Kneaded. Besides excellent puns, this bright and airy Frogtown shop serves dairy-free scones, cookies, turnovers, and galettes, many of which are also gluten-free. Expect giant cinnamon rolls that come with what feels like a pound of icing, and their signature Poptarts decorated with horoscope designs." - sylvio martins, cathy park
