The Hottest Sushi Spots in Philly

"After working in the kitchens at Morimoto and Hiroki, Andy Bernard launched his sushi delivery service — named for a traditional, seasonal Japanese multi-course meal — with co-founder Crystal Gurin in the middle of the pandemic shutdown, and the business is still taking pickup and delivery orders several days a week. The chirashi, with a changing cadre of fish, roe, and vegetables atop seasoned rice, is a good place to start. In a more recent development, you can also dine in person — the sushi bar here counts as one of the city’s most exclusive, seating only four people as it does." - Ernest Owens

The 16 Best Sushi Restaurants In Philly

"Kaiseki in Callowhill focuses solely on sushi, mostly for takeout and delivery (though there are four seats at their counter, if you want to eat a good chirashi bowl in the restaurant). Most maki come topped with things like bright red chili thread, wasabi tobiko, and a sweet and sour umeboshi tahini dressing. If you need to get takeout for a large group, Kaiseki serves a few large combination platters that range from $17-$28 and come with nigiri topped with caviar, otoro handrolls with daikon sprouts, and tuna maki, and more." - candis mclean

Chef Andy is amazing at his craft. The charashi bowls are just as tasty as they are beautiful. Fresh fish that melts in your mouth, paired with delicious umami pickles. My favorites are the shiitake and bamboo! Highly recommend the charashi but the nigiri is to die for. Feeling adventurous? Ask Andy to make you what he feels like and try the omakase!

The food blew me away. Some of the best sushi I have ever had. Andy was extremely personable and fun. An amazing experience that I definitely recommend trying!

Probably the best Chirashi i’ve ever had. I didn’t take a picture as i dove in and finished so quickly. Chef Andy cares deeply about his craft, and the freshness and skill with which it was made makes that obvious, but he was also kind enough to hook me up with some mouth watering tamago/uni and ikura rolls on the house as “dessert” (the tip was consummate with the gesture). Will be coming back!!

Loved talking with the chef and the selection was great. I liked that the chef is nerdy and dorky. It was nice to talk with him, and he made us special custom food items just because we love Japanese food so much. It was pricy but it was a nice lunch date with my spouse. The otorro roll was fantastic and I could probably eat 5 of them in one sitting they’re so dang delicious. I also loved the sparkling juice, and the chef shared some saké with us that was delicious.

If you like a loud chef when you eat, someone who doesn’t know when to allow for quiet time, then this is your place. However, I couldn’t eat more than two pieces. The fish in the window counter looked old and stall, it tasted as much. The sushi pieces were far too big and fell apart. Nothing memorable or special, I actually had to open the reviews to double check if I was at the right place. These reviews appear bought, nothing from this place is wow or extraordinary. I don’t believe people who are calling it the best sushi they have had. It was the worst I’ve had. Plus, you won’t find a regular roll here. Everything is priced at $20 and it isn’t worth the atmosphere, the chef or the presentation, but more importantly the taste of huge chunks of fish, were stomach turning. I rarely leave reviews, but I had to set the record straight about this place. Worst sushi experience I have ever had in this city, and I am sorry I had to experience it.

Absolutely mind-blowing chirashi and sashimi. The fish is the freshest I’ve tasted at any takeout sushi place it Philly! And I used to believe that high-quality sushi & sashimi in Philadelphia doesn’t exist, except for omakase, but I was so wrong! The fish is cut perfectly, and the dishes really focus on the natural flavors of the fish and it’s different cuts, unlike most sushi places where you get food and it’s drowned in mayo and sauce. We’ll be back times and over again. 😊

I first heard about Kaiseki in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Since then I have been hooked! Unlike most sushi restaurants, this is the naturalist and most authentic sushi take-out experience you can have. Kaiseki uses fresh cuts of fish and in-house pickles over sauce-drenched sushi. The in-house pickles is a must get, it refreshes your mouth and brings out deep flavors of the fish every bite. My go-to order is the Chirashi bowl, a layer of rice, and a bed of fresh thick-cut sashimi on top. I live 45 minutes away from Philadelphia, and every time I go, I always make sure to stop by Kaiseki.

Such a hidden gem in the neighborhood! I ordered the anniversary bowl and the otoro roll. The fish was fresh and portions were also big. The shop owner is very sweet and kind, I would definitely be back.
