"At this casual downtown counter-service spot, chef Makoto Yoshino goes heavily into comfort food territory, serving sizeable rice bowls of hearty Japanese curry topped with gooey, melted cheese, pickled daikon, and breaded-then-baked chicken or pork cutlets. Yoshino, originally from Kobe, does one thing and does it well, focusing almost exclusively on this dish." - Nick Woo
This place came highly recommended and lived up to every bit of praise. The owner was very friendly and helped me choose what to get. He could see me struggling with a choice even though there are only a handful of options. I go the Doria with mixed cheese (cheddar and mozzarella). It was absolutely delicious. A great comfort meal on a cold rainy day. Will be back for more!

A solid place for some quick comfort food. The menu is pretty simple which makes ordering very easy. I had the Katsu Kale Doria - based chicken katsu with a layer of melted cheese over the curry. I did enjoy the flavors of the curry mixed with the cheese and katsu.

One of my favorite restaurants! I just love a place that does one dish and does it well. Every time I go to the Portland art museum I always come here afterwards. This food is just so warm and filling I would highly recommend getting the roasted vegetable add-on. The staff is so lovely too. I also love that they have this melon cream soda. It makes me feel like I’m in Japan. Also! Occasionally they have free barley tea and that stuff is delicious!

Quick service. Katsu was crispy outside and juicy inside. Beef curry 🍛 was full of flavors. Best Japanese curry in Portland.

My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed the katsu and Doria. We’ve had katsu before but not like this. The doria sauce really is different and so tasty. I like the simplicity of the menu. The chef really has mastered their craft. The price of the meal too was very reasonable. We will be back soon!

A well traveled friend said that this was the best Japanese curry they had on the west coast - so we had to give it a shot while visiting Portland.
Lived up to the word and more. I'd recommend the doria option for the curry, which is baked with cheese - as that adds the perfect balance to the curry's spice.
10/10 worth it - if there's a line, wait!

Kale is a great little Japanese restaurant and is a short walk from the Saturday Market. The food here is simple and very tasty. They have 4 curry options, I tried two and was very impressed.
The restaurant is pretty small and very limited seating. Not very handicap accessible seating except for 1 or 2 seats.
When we went it was very busy and run solely by one worker and he did an excellent job and was very happy, helpful and friendly.

Oh this place is so so good, I've only ever gotten the Katsu Kalé Doria with Baked Chicken, and will probably get it often in the future. It feels like such comfort food, it's really delicious. I liked mine with extra rice. Make sure to get the Japanese waffle ice creams for dessert, those are amazing as well. Make sure to visit this little hidden gem downtown.
