Yelp
What a gem of a place! Honestly, I was on the quest for Okonomiyaki (which this place no longer serves, unfortunately) when I stumbled upon Kamakura in yelp searches. Wonderful selection of nigiri and rolls, with extensive vegan options (which was really important to my date, who is vegetarian).
Upon entering the place, we were welcomed warmly by all of the staff. Frankly, it felt authentically Japanese, something one might experience in a restaurant in Japan (albeit, in a different language :) ). We were arriving after 7, and there were a couple of 2 person tables for us. The place is smallish, but cozy.
We were offered menus (thank you; I hate having to fumble with my phone to get a menu), and we noted immediately the huge vegan selections. We opted ultimately for an order of edamame (nothing extraordinary there, but still good), and two rolls: the Seattle Vegan Roll and the Google It Roll. The former consists of fried tofu, tofu crab meat, cucumber, grilled onion with a sweetish Unagi sauce. The latter consists of vegan tuna, kanpyo, pickled radish, avocado and grilled onion. It's topped with a sweet mayo sauce. They were both extraordinarily good rolls, especially notable that the vegan crab and tuna were so tasty. I also ordered two sake nigiri, which were also quite tasty.
Love this place!
That said, the only negative comment I can make is that we felt a little rushed towards the end of our meal. We arrived around 7:15, sat and leisurely made our orders. No issues there. But when we were mostly done eating around 8:00, and were visiting and catching up with one another, our table was being bussed and we were asked to pay. It felt like they wanted us to leave. The place doesn't close until 9 and there really were no other people being seated (so they didn't need our table). This feeling was distinctly un-Japanese. Still, it wasn't bad enough to warrant knocking a star from the review. Nor will it convince me not to stop by again. I really do like the food, ambiance, and general cordiality.
