While walking to visit the British Museum, we knew we had to eat an early dinner because the kids were getting tired. We looked around online and saw Kanada-Ya close by. Because the weather was a little chilly, we figured a nice bowl of ramen would hit the spot. While walking, we also saw Ippudo across the street. We love Ippudo, but we can get that back in the Bay Area. Would that come back to haunt us? Read on.
Because we came early, we were able to snag the last table. Good thing, too, because the waitlist grew really big just a few minutes after. The inside is pretty small with only a handful of tables. After looking over the menu, most of the table went with the safe Tonkotsu, while I went with the Spicy Yuzu. We also got an order of gyoza and a chashu bowl to round out the meal. Everything came out quickly, except for the gyoza, which we had to ask for again.
I'll start off with my Spicy Yuzu. You could really taste the Yuzu, which for some ramen purists, might be a little off-putting. For me, I like a little bit of contrasting flavors when it comes to my meals. However, for some reason, it just didn't blend together, in my opinion. The Tonkotsu didn't seem much better as the broth wasn't as flavorful as other places I've had. The broth is the star of the show, so this was a letdown. The chashu was not tender either. The noodles were cooked to hard, which was what we asked for. But, without a good broth, what does it matter?
The service here was above average. Excellent greeting and friendliness. And, they checked in with us a few times. When we left, they acknowledged us, as well. But, I did have to flag them down for our gyoza and more water.
Judging by all the rave reviews, we might be in the minority here. All I know is I've had better ramen elsewhere with the likes of Ippudo, Santouka, and Ramen Nagi.
