"As tends to happen with the busiest breakfast spots in the city, Kanela has multiplied. There are six locations now, but this is the original, still serving their popular Greek-influenced brunch. There are at least four options for French toast on a given day, and plenty of different egg dishes. Be sure to get some of the sweet cinnamon monkey bread to split for the table." - Josh Barnett

"Kanela is trying to take over the breakfast and lunch game in Chicago, one diner at a time - there are now six locations across the city. The one in Old Town is good for breakfast, brunch, or lunch seven days a week from 8am-3pm. That makes Kanela a serious utility player, with everything from red velvet French toast to crab cake benedict and a croque madame. This place is slammed on the weekends, but if you come during the week you won’t have to wait long." - sam faye, adrian kane

The service was friendly, if not a bit rushed even whilst they were not busy. The cinnamon roll that I had was absolutely delicious, and really had me looking forward to my main meal of buttermilk coated chicken sandwich. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy the main dish. The chicken sandwich was so salty and the chicken so dry that I struggled to get through it. The potatoes were underdone and a bit bland for my taste. A big pity, given all the amazing reviews I had seen. The other patrons seemed happy, so perhaps my dish was a wildcard.

I think the food was delicious and reasonably priced for the area. Great place for brunch before the Pride parade! ...but so help me God if they give us one more free bowl of fruit I might die. Edit: Had a friend go there last week. The cook walked out and they waited over an hour for their food. While the food was good it took forever. The place seems to be chaotic.

This is the place to stop for quality breakfast. Menu choices very a lot of good and different options. Not your normal menu items here. Food is prepared fresh and the presentation is delivered looks really really tasty. Food quality was outstanding service a little slow on the coffee refills but outside of that it was great.

Stopped by for brunch and this place is awesome. Fresh juices were great, drinks were strong and tasty. The Irish coffee was a great wake me up but very strong. Chorizo and eggs were good. Spicy and a really good portion. The potatos were really well seasoned and cooked. Chicken and waffles were killer! Chicken was crispy and very flavorful. Waffle was perfectly done and it was a perfect combo. Loved it and definitely recommend it! One of my favorite brunch spots.

Love this place. Monkey bread appetizer is a must! I usually get biscuits and gravy but they have delicious sweet options too! They serve la Colombe coffee which is delicious and bottomless. Also like that they have almondmilk instead of creamer. Not usually longer than 25 min or so wait.

This place usually has good food, but my visit today was just shy of me walking out before even ordering. We (2 people) came here and there was a table for 2 open. We were told it was a 5-10 minute wait. So I assumed there was a party of 2 before us. Ten minutes later this kid comes up to us and confirms we are a party of 2 and then walks away. A couple minutes later he tells us to follow him to our table. It was the freakin' table that has been open the whole time. Okay, so now we are seated with empty glasses and menus. A couple waitresses moseyed by paying no attention to us sitting there with no silverware, water or even acknowledgment. We must have been sitting there for about another 10-15 minutes before I was even able to ask a busboy if he could get our waitress. She finally comes and takes our order. We get our coffee and ask for cream... You know that moment when you live with roommates and they put a basically empty carton of milk in the fridge that doesn't have enough in it for your bowl of cereal and the wrath that you feel? Well, we got the little creamer pitcher and there is maybe a teaspoon of cream in it (see fig. 1). Still no utensils, by the way. While waiting to get our waitress' attention to get more cream, the couple next to us get their food and the girl says, "Oh, I forgot we were even getting food." We finally got our food and they really missed the mark. It was not worth the wait or frustration of this experience. We couldn't get out of there fast enough. Not sure if I'll ever come back... ...maybe just for the monkey bread.

No wait, amazing cinnamon rolls. Slow drink service which is to be expected when the drinks are hand made. Would eat here again or at a different location

This breakfast place never gets old. Eat healthy, or go crazy. Stick w coffee, or have cocktails. It's versatile and everything is delicious.
