Where to Find the Best Fish Tacos in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"This sized-down, walk-up location features a welcoming shaded patio and offers a condensed menu that includes the all-time classic Baja-style taco along with grilled fish tacos. Looking for something a bit different? The mariscos experts also offer marlin, mixed seafood (octopus, scallop, and shrimp), and seared ahi tuna taco for something a little less expected but no less compelling. Grab a to-go beer and enjoy these tacos outside." - Candice Woo

Where to Eat San Diego’s Best Mariscos | Eater San Diego

"A modern, mini version of its big sister locations, Karina’s walk-up concept features a smaller menu geared towards casual eats on Washington Street. Order some ceviche to go, or take any of the signature tacos over to the eatery’s little outdoor patio." - Mario A. Cortez

Best Mexican Food in San Diego | Condé Nast Traveler

"The newest outpost from San Diego's family-run Karina's empire, located on busy India Street near the airport, is a modern, fast-casual restaurant that operates more like your average food stand. Order at the to-go window, and once you've claimed your goods, head out onto the small outdoor patio. The menu features the classics, like the fish taco, carnitas burrito, and signature ceviche —a spicy blend of shrimp, avocado, cilantro, and cucumber. But the stand-out is the bacon-wrapped shrimp taco: cream cheese and Serrano pepper-stuffed shrimp, wrapped in bacon that are fried and finished with a spicy mango sauce." - Archana Ram

Google
Literally some of the best food my family and I have ever had. We were visiting San Diego and looking for a place that served micheladas - thankfully it led us here!! We were pleased with the unique seating arrangement and atmosphere, and when we tried the food, we lost our minds. The ahí tuna tostada was especially good - the tuna was so fresh, taste was perfectly balanced, and the tostada itself was unlike any I have ever tried, so crispy and flaky yet strong enough to hold the heavy serving of fish on top. We will definitely be visiting San Diego again, just to come to Karina’s!!

Google
When in SD don’t skip the higher area of India st known as the international restaurants row, and Karina’s will be there, so good, we eat the ahi tuna tostada and the shrimp, octopus something else taco. The Jamaica water was not so great thought. Maybe because we got there like 20 min before closing time and it was very diluted, but the rest was very good. We will be back.

Every time I’m in San Diego, this place is my first stop. it’s conveniently located just down the street from the airport. You can’t go wrong with their traditional fish tacos, which are always spot-on. This time, I tried their surf and turf tacos for the first time, and they were excellent, Highly recommend this spot. It might be a little busy, but it’s absolutely worth it. Great food, great location definitely a must visit.

Google
I ordered delivery from Karina’s and everything was delicious. The ceviche plate and spicy crispy shrimp were fresh and amazing. The tacos were all solid, with the fish tacos being my favorite. The surf and turf, bacon-wrapped shrimp, rib eye, lobster tacos, and ahi poke tostada were great. Overall, a good experience, and I’d recommend giving it a try.

Google
Awesome food! The surf & turf burrito taste is fantastic. We made two visits for it in the days! We also had the Mixto ceviche there second trip and wow! So fresh and wonderful. Highly recommend this restaurant. Also, the lady that took our order was very friendly and fun. We can't wait to visit again!

Google
The service at this location was good - cashiers kinda seemed like they didn’t want to be there. We ordered the green ceviche and it was lacking a bit of flavor and seasoning, it wasn’t as spicy as we were expecting it to be. The plate of ceviche was $17 and the water was $6. They only have outdoor seating that sort of overlooks the I-5 and the planes.

Google
There is absolutely nothing to complain about when it comes to the food at this little takeout taco joint. Both the bacon-wrapped shrimp taco and the Marlín taco (smoked fish and cheese) are outrageously good, and the Ceviche Karina is in a delightful green chile sauce. There's a fair amount of outdoor seating, and the only issue is the breeze, which will blow your napkins everywhere. Otherwise, this is a great meal.

Google
Sun-filled balcony, jarritos, and fresh ceviche, does it get any better? I ordered Mexican style ceviche tostada and two fried fish tacos, both perfect. If your uber driver tells you about a place, it usually won’t disappoint.

Yelp
Arrived here around noon and the place wasn't busy. There was plenty of outdoor seating, and the umbrellas provided enough shade. I ordered from the service window, and the food was brought up to me in about 5 minutes. I ordered the grilled marlin and fish taco. The tacos were packed with plenty of fish, toppings, and flavor. San Diego in general is pricey, but I did not feel like I didn't get my money's worth. I left the eatery feeling full and satisfied. Parking is always a challenge in SD. There is street parking and metered parking. Luckily, I was able to find street parking. If you are hungry and in the area, I recommend stopping here for a bite to eat.

Yelp
Karina's has several locations. I have yet to try the downtown location but so far the India location for food and service is the best! . You order at the open window on the side of the street, they give you a number and they bring your food to you. We usually sit at Saffron next door, and they bring the items to us there. Same owners. We have eaten here a couple times a month for the last few years, popping in whenever we are in the area. My usual order is the surf and turf taco with chipotle sauce. $7.50 You get 3 shrimp typically and a decent amount of steak. Two tacos will fill you up, sometimes one. My BF likes their shrimp ceviche and their rib eye taco. I find the rib eye too bland for me. Their Lobster taco is good but not my fave. I want to try their birria taco next. To go orders hold up reasonably well but presentation on dine-in is better. They offer a side of chips and salsa with your order if you want it.

Yelp
I was craving ceviche/tostada so we decided to try this place. You order at the counter and you can grab a place to sit to its left which is a Thai restaurant with outdoor seating and there's also seating to the right. I ordered two tostadas, one was the ahi poke and the ceviche Karina's. Ceviche Karina's $7.25 - Pretty good! There wasn't anything I didn't like about it. It has shrimp, cucumbers and avocado in the green chile sauce Ahi poke $7.50 - underwhelming as I love ahi poke. From the pictures and description, it looks like it was missing some spicy mayo. I felt like it was a bit bland without it. My husband had an extra side of cilantro crema from his food (he ordered food elsewhere) which made it so much better which would've been a fail without it

Yelp
This is my neighborhood go-to! Food is always fresh & consistent. The shrimp cocktail is a must-try, I always substitute the crackers it comes with for fresh chips, delicious! The shrimp tacos, surf & turf, and Del Mar tacos are my personal favorite. The ceviche's are also really delicious! This is a great take-away spot otherwise there is a cute patio with patio seating next door & they also share a covered patio with the restaurant next door. You really cannot go wrong with anything on the menu here.
google avatar

Yelp
Views were amazing from their outdoor seating area and staff were nice. The ceviche was fine so I'll definitely bring out of town friends here if they want ceviche with a view. We also got the ahi tostada but it was so sweet my friend and I couldn't take more than a bite. It was very thick and syrupy, it was strange to the point I thought if they mistaken sugar with salt. It's not often I can't finish my food but I definitely couldn't.

Yelp
Stopped here the other night for a quick meal to go. Please note if you're coming here, all surrounding parking is metered and it's hard to find parking in general. Ordered 2 tacos and in about 15 minutes it was ready. The tacos came with a delicious salsa and the chips themselves were slightly warm and had a good crunch. The tacos were unfortunately not very warm, and stuffed in the same foil so their fillings mixed together and everything got pretty mushy. I wish the fish taco had more overall flavor, from both the fish itself and the sauce. The al pastor taco was good, and I felt had a good flavor. Overall I would not run back to this place.
google avatar

Aakriti A.

Yelp
The ceviche and the fish taco (Baja style) were excellent (probably best fish taco I've ever had), but I wouldn't get the Al pastor taco again as it was nothing to write home about. There was good seating and I liked the ambience. Well priced.

Yelp
side street shop w/ patio seating outside incredibly fresh ceviche and bold flavors! the service was amazing and everything came out quickly. we ordered the: camaron cocido, marina mixto, ahi poke tostada, lobster taco, and lobster burrito. the ceviches were refreshing and they do not skimp out on flavor or seafood portions. they come w/ a few plain tostadas to eat with as well. the ahi poke tostada was delicious, definitely a must have! the lobster taco was a good try as well! we tried their burrito last time but would recommend getting the taco instead. it tastes even better when you top it off with the ceviche! would come back to eat more when I'm around again :)

Yelp
First came here as a request for the hubs Father's day years ago. He got the special. Babe got the bacon wrapped shrimp tacos and I got the ahi poke tostada. We all loved our food except for him lol. Long ago pre-pandemic you can get the delicious ahi poke tostada piled high for only $4! Now it's almost $8 and the quality has gone down, which is really unfortunate. Only outside seating. Parking is crazy in this area all the time and especially at lunch time. But the turnover is pretty quick. There's no bathroom, but you can use the bathroom at Saffron. 2024: 25

Yelp
This has become my go-to taco place when I'm driving near the airport. It consistently has some of the best tasting tacos around. I usually go for the smoked marlin or the scallops. The combination of fresh ingredients is somewhat unique-- it's slightly different than what I've found at typical mariscos with amazing flavors. 2-3 tacos are a full meal so you can try something new each time. It's easy to find a parking space on the street- just park on the side of the street by the freeway and walk across the street. You just order at the window and then sit at the tables on the balcony area nextdoor.

Yelp
The service at this location was good - cashiers kinda seemed like they didn't want to be there. We ordered the green ceviche and it was lacking a bit of flavor and seasoning, it wasn't as spicy as we were expecting it to be. The plate of ceviche was $17 and the water was $6. Yelp
Oh snap! Don't miss this place. Some of the best of ceviches I've ever had. Got the shrimp with green sauce, the Aji, tuna, and the fish. So good! Even the chips tasted handmade and were hot. Proper nixtamal. If you are a local, make sure you add this to your regular places. If you are visiting, it's worth it to spend one of your meals if you love ceviche.
google avatar

Luis F.

Yelp
Love the concept of this little gem.. quick to order, they are efficient with all orders and the food is consistent every time you visit. My go to is the shrimp enchilado tacos ... please make sure you can handle the spice and heat before you try this one! If you love the heat, this taco will score high on your fav list. The aguachiles are delicious and I love the red onions soaked in the lime juice at the end.
google avatar

randy b.

Yelp
Best Birria burrito I ever had! I've been eating here for YEARS getting the standard Cali and carnitas burrito. Very good! On a whim I tried the Birria burrito today and it's unbelievable. Simple but perfect with onions and cilantro. Tiered seating off the street thats dog friendly! Great and fast service. My favorite walk up Baja style place!
google avatar

Josh B.

Yelp
The Ceviche Karina's looks and tastes green in the best possible way. Less popular, but also great, is the costeno. The hook is the spicy clam sauce. If you're a visitor to the region, the hard-to-find marlin taco is a must-have; unscientifically I'll say it's reminiscent of tuna but better.
google avatar

Vanessa S.

Yelp
Horrible service from start to finish. The staff was clueless about the menu--couldn't even answer basic questions about the dishes. I had to literally point out something on the menu that they stated wasn't on there. I ordered two plates, which I was told came with three tostadas each. When I asked where the other tostadas were, they suddenly claimed that one of the plates doesn't come with tostadas at all. So I'm suppose to eat aguachiles with a fork :/ The inconsistency and lack of knowledge were incredibly frustrating. As for the food, I'm baffled by the high reviews. The ceviche was mediocre at best--nothing to write home about. This place is a complete tourist trap, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone looking for an authentic, quality meal.

Yelp
Great food, poor service with an attitude! Asked twice for salsa and both the younger Mexican girl and gentleman never appeared. I had to go back up to the window to ask a 3rd time. Delivered with sour face with no apology!
google avatar

Rob Z.

Yelp
Insane happy hour with delicious tacos and drinks. Yummmmm such friendly service too!!
google avatar

Deya Z.

Yelp
in town for work and craving some Mexican seafood. This place was amazing. We have the cocktail and a tostada. Both were delicious. The staff was super friendly and helpful with them and you, offering a couple of recommendations. They do still beer, but it's primarily Mexican bottles.
google avatar

Laura F.

Yelp
Came here right from the airport for ceviche! I loved the ahi tuna ceviche, like memorably so. It was not only delicious but beautifully presented with pickled onions and fresh ingredients. I also had a camarones cocidos tostada, which was tasty, but less impressive. It was shrimp cocktail on a tostada, which was what I ordered, so no complaints. My spouse, who is not a fish/seafood person, but brings me to the beach anyway, had the carne asada fries. They were tasty. The meat was very good. They had orchata and I had a jamaica agua fresca to drink- both hit the spot. The patio was clean and nice. Atmosphere is fast, casual. No complaints here. I am still remembering the ahi ceviche!
google avatar

Isa J.

Yelp
I've had their mixed ceviche and shrimp cocktail and they are both really good and fresh! They both come with lots chips and salsa which is nice. I love their outdoor sitting, especially when it is sunny out. Food also comes out really fast so if you're on the go this is great spot!
google avatar

A T.

Yelp
We come to this place EVERYTIME we are in San Diego. Just not this location and I probably will never be back bc the girl at the front swore the 5 chips she gave us were coming out of her check. We asked for more chips because look at the pic all this food and seriously a hand full of chips. The tostada shells get soggy so maybe go to an other location or another place where it's not that serious to give extra.
google avatar

Katie A.

Yelp
This was such a cute spot to stop and have lunch right after landing in San Diego. It's less than 10 minutes from the airport but parking can be a bit tricky. You order at a window then they have seating to the right on a staggered patio under the trees overlooking the street. We had the pescado ceviche and the grilled fish tacos and enjoyed both. It's a cute area with a lot of international restaurants.

Jake M.

Yelp
Surf and turf burrito was amazing. And it was huge! Probably 1.5 x the size of a usual burrito. Staff was polite and made sure to keep dining area clean at all times, definitely will be back when I'm in the city.

V. W.

Yelp
Super fresh ceviche and great birria tacos. Sat outside on the elevated patio which is dog friendly. Will definitely come back and try more.
google avatar

Kate G.

Yelp
After visiting Harper's Topiary Garden, we needed to find dinner nearby. We stumbled upon International Restaurant Row and ended up deciding on Karina's because both of us love ceviche. I got the ceviche Karina's and my husband got the marina mixto. Both were delicious and came with a very different sauce so we were able to get a mix of flavor profiles. Karina's was in a green Chile sauce and the marina mixto was tomato and lime based. We also enjoyed eating outside on a beautiful San Diego evening and the view (other than it being across from a gas station) was lovely.
google avatar

Chris F.

Yelp
Karina's is my favorite place to get tacos in all of san diego and lucky enough for me it's right down the street from where i live. Everything on the menu is insanely good and the place has such a cool vibe, you order from a window and they have seating right next door. Service is always quick and they bring you the food. This is a MUST for anyone in san diego looking for great tacos.
google avatar

Aurianna B.

Yelp
Stopped in hungry as hell after walking in the pride parade. We ordered 3 tacos a piece and scarfed Em down. I didn't even get a pic of the other 2 because they were inhaled. Ordered the surf and turf, Marlin and bacon wrapped shrimp. The marlin was eh. The surf and turf was good. The bacon wrapped shrimp was hands down the best one we ordered! There's plenty of outdoor seating or you can sit inside at Saffron.
google avatar

Yasmeen E.

Yelp
My family and I came here on a Saturday night. There is outdoor dining, luckily it was not too cold, but it would be a good idea to have indoor dining. I got three tacos; lobster, grilled fish, and fried fish taco. Each taco was very good, especially the lobster which I was pleasantly surprised by. My husband got the ceviche karina's plate and that was really fresh and yummy. We would come back here again! Service is minimal since you order at the front counter and then they just bring you your food.
google avatar

Jonathan S.

Yelp
Well, this is a first. This restaurant did not get my order right then try to hand me an order that would be impossible to make since I asked for everything well done you would not be able to do that 10 seconds after you screwed my order. They tried to give me things that I'm allergic to and specifically told him not to put on it. When I asked him to make it right, they treated me like I was a piece of sh!t. They actually told me not to come there anymore and I've been going there every day for food. I'm beside myself I've never experienced any more foul customer service in my life. I hope the worst for you guys. Honestly, I hope your business falls apart. I literally live around the corner from you and come to you every day. Not anymore. You guys are straight up dumb.
google avatar

Courtney C.

Yelp
I tried the Karina's ceviche plate which came with complimentary chips and salsa. I love me some ceviche so I was excited to try this take on it and was a little disappointed. It didn't deliver in spice or flavor, it was mostly cucumber which made it really watery. The cashier was really friendly though when I asked for buckets of Tapatio to douse it with. The salsa wasn't that great either, it tasted like the prepackaged Pace salsa. Ultimately I wouldn't come back for the ceviche but might try the tacos next time.
google avatar

Stefany C.

Yelp
This place has delicious ceviche and fish tacos. The ceviche with green sauce is my favorite. The Baja fish taco is delicious. Service is great. Food is yummy.
google avatar

Vivian T.

Yelp
Such a cute little spot to enjoy some ceviche for dinner. We ordered the Marina Mixto and got complimentary chips and salsa. There is seating if you head up the steps to the right of the store if you want to dine there! I would say one order of ceviche is sharable with two people, but I could probably eat one myself if I was really hungry. The Marina Mixto comes with octopus, scallop, and shrimp. There was plenty of pieces in the ceviche and they gave us a good amount. I think I like the salsa more than the juice they used for the mix because it was a little bit sweet for me. Karina's is a solid choice for ceviche as they have many options and a variety of other menu items. I plan on trying their tacos next time because they sound amazing!

Dulce A.

Yelp
The restaurant was beautiful and inviting. Food was delicious! Services was a 10 thanks to Jazmin. Will go back again!
google avatar

Anakaren L.

Yelp
Sooooo goood decent prices and a good amount of ceviche. I got an al pastor taco and also tasty and the tortilla was good. I ordered of DoorDash and was my first time. I will definitely go in person soon. :)
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
What a great place to go get some fresh delicious ceviche and tacos this is! Great sitting area that facing the sunset, to get to the sitting area you do have to climb some stairs since it is on an incline there's two levels- great to see the sunset. You order food by the sidewalk and you get a number and they bring your food to you, doesn't take too long to get food- it wasn't busy when we visited on a Thursday afternoon. The tacos were so good served with fresh avocados and we got chips and salsa on the side, their salsa was ok. Their ceviche was amazing great for sharing we got the plate. I do wish they had spicy sauces out in the balcony to use while eating but not a deal breaker and I also didn't ask so next time I'll be asking because I will definitely be coming back!
google avatar

Aaron L.

Yelp
I had high hopes for this restaurant given the many positive reviews. Ordered the Marina Mixto plate with avocado, which was supposed to be a mix of shrimp, bay scallops, and octopus. What I got was a mostly tomato and cucumber dish with tiny bits of seafood. Amazing how small they chopped the seafood. There may have been pieces of 3-4 tiny bay scallops, 2-3 small shrimp, and barely discernable octopus. Taste was fresh and this would easily be 4 stars if there was actually seafood to be seen and tasted in the dish. Poor value for the price.

Jazmin R.

Yelp
Great food . Shrimp enchilado taco was the best. All the food regardless was delicious and fresh
google avatar

Sofya P.

Yelp
Wow!!!! Lobster, Del Mar, surf and turf tacos were delish!!! Such cute outdoor seating area. You order at the window, service is quick and friendly. Will definitely return every time I'm in SD! So yum!

Sandy S.

Yelp
I used to love this place & have been coming here for years but over the last year the food quality has gone down. The burritos/tacos/meat have little to no flavor and the ceviches have been very bland. The food inconsistencies have made me almost stop coming here completely, especially when the service tends to be pretty bad & below average. They get stingy with their salsa even though you have to drown your food in it to get some flavor. I really don't know if they changed cooks or lack of quality control here but it sucks we go other places now.
google avatar

Rafael P.

Yelp
We just got ripped-off in plain daylight yesterday afternoon! $5 each for one CAN of soda and one BOTTLE of mineral water at Karina's Ceviches & More on India St. in S.D.! Gasoline is even cheaper than a beverage (too bad that gasoline is not as tasty as beer, soda, or whatever! LOL!) WT*?!! By the way, we really enjoy dining at the Karina's chain of restaurants, so we're not complaining about the food (the ahi poke and the ahi tuna tostadas were good - a little overpriced but still good). I don't blame the beverage prices on inflation. I believe it's greed. If the beverage was refillable, okay, I'd say $5 is expected when we dine-out; but c'mon . . . $5 for one can of soda/bottle?!
google avatar

Ann Q.

Yelp
Man their burrito is hefty! I got the rotisserie chicken burrito you know... Trying to be healthier? LOL it's jammed packed with chicken! You won't miss the rice or beans! The chips and tostada are super crunchy and ceviche was fresh and delicious. Needed a lil spice so glad I had tapatio on hand! Great value for the price!
google avatar

Keiko H.

Yelp
We were trying to go to another place a block away but since the line was too long, we decided to give this place a try. Very casual place, you order outside the window and there are some long table seatings outside. There was no one in line so we ordered right away. We got some fish and shrimp tacos and shrimp ceviche (cocktail one in the cup) The shrimp and fish tacos were mediocre. The shrimp in the ceviche was very hard and it was lacking in flavor. Considering there was barely anyone we waited for a while for our food. but I did see a couple of people picking up food so maybe they get a lot of orders for pick up. Overall, it was oK.
google avatar

vanessa s.

Yelp
Great sunny spot with outside seating facing the water. Food is always good here! Everything I've had here has been gooood!
google avatar

Jessica J.

Yelp
Loved the fresh Mexican seafood they offer here. I ordered the fish ceviche, gobernador taco, and marlin taco and all were great. Tacos were pressed in heat to get a nice char and crunch out of them, and I liked how it made the tacos more compact and each to eat. Ceviche portion was HUGE, can easily be shared by two. Ceviche came with big three tostadas and I also got a side of chips, but not sure if those chips came with the ceviche or if it comes will all orders. I would love to come back and try more of their tacos and burritos!
google avatar

Melyssa D.

Yelp
I haven't tried anything else on the menu other than the ceviche and shrimp tacos! I've been here 3 times and every time I'm just in awe of the flavors and freshness of the shrimp. I even dabbled to try and recreate this myself but it wasn't the same I wish there was a location closer to me so I wouldn't have to drive 2 hours for it
google avatar

Rachel F.

Yelp
AMAZING! First it's so affordable for such quality food. Second the place is darling. Everything was very flavorful. I came here for the Baja fish taco which was great but the ceviche tostada was killer too! I'll be going back
google avatar

Jason L.

Yelp
Karina's doles out more underwear treasure than the First National Bank of Atlantis. Their claim to fame, and namesake, is ceviche and they do not disappoint. Yours truly opted for the Marina Mixto ceviche which is a blend of shrimp, octopus and scallops with a barrage of veggies and slightly spicy sauce. It was plentiful, affordable and swimming with seafood (see what I did there?). For the main event, I stuck with my octopus, scallop and shrimp theme and got two Del Mar tacos. They overflowed with sea creatures and were super duper fresh. Best part, each taco was only $5. Great quality and value. This land lubber can't wait to once again fill his belly with a fresh haul o' fish care of Karina's before high tide.

Hope A.

Yelp
Best stop to make right after you land or before you take off. Delicious food eaten outside on the deck. What a way to say hello or good bye to San Diego!
