The Best Halal Food in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"This Old Town Moroccan cafe serves nuanced tagines alongside shiny metal pots of mint tea. Kasbah sources halal meats for dishes like Moroccan kefta or the house-made Merguez lamb sausage, available as a tagine or a sandwich. The bastilla here is a must-order, with flaky, powdered sugar-dusted pastry giving way to a well-spiced chicken core." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

The Best Restaurants and Cafes in Portland’s Old Town-Chinatown | Eater Portland

"This earthy-red, ornately furnished Moroccan cafe serves b’stilla, a traditional powdered sugar-dusted pastry filled with chicken, as well as numerous tagines and Merguez lamb sausage made onsite. The sausage can be enjoyed in sandwich form, though the tagine with couscous and green olives is a lovely expression of the halal meat. There’s no going wrong with starting a meal with the zaalouk and shakshuka dip duo, accompanied by fluffy flatbread. Make sure to order it with Moroccan mint tea in iced tea form or as a whole tea service." - Zoe Baillargeon

Found this whole exploring the Old Town area. This was a new experience for me as I never had food with this flavor profile. It was simply amazing in every way. Tried both the chicken and beef and could not decide which I liked more. The portions were plentiful and the service was very friendly. I look forward to going back and trying something new.

Somewhere between the gentrified ghosts of Old Town Portland and the soft rattle of the MAX gliding past NW Davis, you’ll find a gate swung open—not just to a restaurant, but to another continent entirely. The Kasbah Moroccan Café doesn’t shout for your attention. It lures you in with the subtle confidence of a place that knows it’s the real deal. Step inside and the air shifts. The walls are dressed in terracotta and story. Ornate lamps throw honey-colored light across empty tables that somehow feel full—with memory, with family, with meals that meant something. You half expect a Berber grandmother to walk out from the back and scold you for not calling home more often. Then comes the food. Makouda. Three golden potato cakes bathed in a tomato sauce that’s equal parts comfort and fire. They’re topped with olives and parsley, kissed with harissa, and carry that soulful whisper of cumin and paprika that tells you: someone in the kitchen isn’t cooking for Yelp reviews—they’re cooking to remember who they are. You eat it slowly. You let the flavors linger. Because this isn’t a place for speed. This is a place to let time melt into mint tea. And oh, that tea. Served in a silver pot on a hammered tray like it was poured by the very hands of tradition itself. Sweet, sharp, and steaming, it’s the kind of drink that feels medicinal in the way only grandmothers and ancient mountain herbs can be. You sip. You exhale. You notice Naji, the owner, slipping between tables with the ease of someone who doesn’t need to explain why this place exists—his presence says it all: this is love, poured into walls, simmered in saucepans, served in glasses etched with memory. Portland has plenty of spots where you can eat. But not many where you can arrive. Kasbah is one.

Google
The makouda (spiced potato patties) were very flavorful & unique. The stuffed batbot sandwich was very filling. But my favorite was the yellow split pea soup! It was so rich & creamy, rare to find a truly delicious soup. Good portion sizes & reasonable prices. Has a nice neighborhood feel. Will definitely come back!

Google
First time trying Moroccan cuisine while traveling to Portland. Was recommended to this place by a friend and left well beyond pleased! We ordered the chicken tanjine, dip duo, split pea soup and iced mint tea. All were very tasty and owner was also very hospitable. I’ll be visiting on my next trip!

Google
Amazing authentic Moroccan food and hospitality. I came here with friends from work and we had the Dip Duo (chakchouka and zaalouk) with batbout for starters. Main course was Merguez Tajine and a Vegetable Couscous. Everything was full of flavor and delicious! Mint tea and spiced coffee were also excellent. Thank you Chef Naji for your hospitality and for bringing a piece of Morocco to Portland! We will be back soon! Highly recommend!

Google
Beautiful place with incredible food!! The atmosphere inside is so lovely, and the food is AMAZING! The tea was so delicious, some of the best i’ve had. The owner is also very kind and friendly. Definitely a spot worth going out of your way for! I can’t wait to go back and try the rest of the menu 😋

Google
I came to Portland on a business trip and thought I'd give Moroccan food a try. I got the seafood and lamb tagines, and the chicken bastilla. The food was high quality with generous portions and good seasoning. The chicken bastilla is a very interesting dish I would definitely recommend. It's a sort of chicken covered in filo dough with powdered sugar and spices on it. It's delicious, with a unique taste and great texture. The owner is friendly too, and this is a pretty good restaurant, being open for almost 10 years. If you wanna try Moroccan food, you should definitely go here!

This was our first time eating Moroccan food. So delicious! The owner works hard to keep the place clean and beautiful too. We will definitely go back.

Yelp
The food and service at Kasbah Moroccan Cafe is five stars, A+! We ordered a few different entrees and of course had to get their famous mint tea! The food is very comforting and delicious! Side point: I won't take any point off because it's not the restaurants fault, but I was shocked to see so many homeless people walking around the restaurant especially a block away where they camp out. The location itself is not the best, but I did enjoy the restaurant.

Yelp
Kasbah lives up to its reputation. Deeply satisfying, hearty, nourishing, and delicious. I had the stuffed batbot sandwich with the yellow lentil soup and an iced mint tea as a reviewer a month ago recommended this. The sandwich had such fresh ingredients and was simultaneously light with the fresh cucumber and lettuce and tomatoes and hearty with the meat patty and fried egg. The real star for me was the lentil soup which was a rich umami soup. I'm coming back for more of that soup! The sweet mint iced tea was refreshing on a warm day. I left with a full belly and a happy smile. This restaurant is family run and they are so nice! I'm happy to eat here.

Yelp
This tiny spot is a must visit! The decor looks to be collected items from the owner, and I enjoyed the music. We picked our own seat and ordered at the counter. The food and drink were brought out as they were ready. Everything was delicious and not quite like anything I'd had before. I want to go back to try more of the menu! Next time, Portland. Another table nearby said it was better than the Moroccan food they had in Morocco.

Yelp
Overall Thoughts: The 5 star reviews don't lie; this spot is seriously incredible. The stuffed batbot sandwich was among the best sandwiches I've ever had and the iced Moroccan mint tea was a fantastic pairing. This is a spot that makes me upset that I don't live in/closer to Portland. It's counter service, and the staff/owner are super friendly and the food comes out quickly. The prices are very reasonable given the quality and portions. There isn't a ton of seating inside, but it was pretty much empty when I went in for lunch on a Thursday. The interior is decorated nicely and patriotically, with beautiful tiles and flags adorning the walls. Food I tried: - Stuffed Batbot Sandwich with Yellow Split Pea Soup (5/5): This is no doubt among the best sandwiches I've ever eaten. The bread is wonderful, springey and spongey. The kefta patty is delicious-- juicy with robust flavors and without even a tinge of dryness. I loved the warm, lightly runny egg and cheese paired with the cold, crispy veggies. The soup was also hearty and creamy with delicious hints of smokey paprika. You can really taste the olive oil layer on top which added a rich, earthy flavor to it. It's large and filling, and more than worth the money. - Iced Moroccan Mint Tea (4.8/5): So refreshing and tasty! It was sweeter than expected, but delicious with hints of minty flavor. It was the perfect, light palette cleanser between bites of my savory, rich sandwich and soup. -- Price (relative to peers): 4.6/5 Food: 4.9/5 Ambience: 4.9/5 Service: 5/5 Overall Value: 4.9/5

Yelp
Although I visited Kasbah about a month ago (my apologies for such a late posting), I still think about the food. Needless to say, Kasbah served some of the best food I've had in a long time. My friends and I were visiting Portland for just the weekend, and I'm so glad that we stopped by here. We were hungry at 6 pm on a Saturday, and although we were the only ones in the restaurant for a while, a few other parties did show up. Don't be fooled, this place should be full to the brim with a line out the door!! I tried the split pea soup, and halved the lamb tangine and seafood tangine with a friend. Everything tasted phenomenal. Seasoned perfectly, large portion sizes (I eat a lot and was so hungry that day but had enough for breakfast the next morning). Everything was very fresh and just so good. It's the ultimate comfort food. Also got to try the mint tea which was great as well. The owner runs almost a one man show. He's at the front of the house, he's in the kitchen, he's talking to customers. Tip this man well!! If I were a Portland native, I would frequent this place so much. Kasbah needs a Gordon Ramsey or Keith Lee to make it go viral to match how good the food is. Seriously, go try the food!!

Yelp
First time here and not disappointed! We ordered the Chicken and Olives as well as the Seafood Tagine. The spices were perfectly blended to give each dish a unique and delicious flavor. The portions were quite plentiful and we went home with some to enjoy the next day. The owner/chef was great in helping us with that placing our order and even went out of his way to make us mint iced tea without adding green tea. It felt like we were having a homemade meal as the chef brought out our food to the table. Though this restaurant is more like a diner and lacks in ambiance, such as no wait staff and your order is placed at the counter. Let me reiterate the food is not to be missed. The restaurant could use a refresh, but it doesn't seem to matter because I'm sure his food is what keeps customers coming back!

Yelp
Even though minimal, the interior is very cute and welcoming. The Moroccan iced tea was very refreshing, although a tad too sweet. Food took longer than expected to come out. The potato appetizer Makouda was delicious- the accompanying tomato sauce was quite spicy but thankfully, it was just on the border of the plate, so we tried to avoid it as much as possible. The garbanzo tagine and the sausage sandwich Merguez were both nice and flavorful. There was not much in the way of service to comment on.

Yelp
Everything about it went well. I just got back from Morocco and eager to find a place locally where I could get more of that wonderful authentic Moroccan food. I found it! Best thing ever that it is within walking distance of my home In Portland 's Pearl district. I felt like I was eating in one of the tiny restaurants inside one of the country's Medinas. Like eating in a Moroccan grandma's kitchen. In this case, a bit dumpy just like the real deal you'd see in Marrakesh, Fez, or just about any other place in Morocco. Fancy, no! Great food, absolutely and I can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Owners is an absolute badass and sweetheart with an extensive culinary background spanning businesses and cuisines that might surprise you, but it made sense to me after tasting the divine food being served here. I got a chicken bastilla, a 1000 year old dish that still holds up today with a delicately flakey exterior dough covered in cinnamon and powdered sugar with a chicken + spice stuffing that is a divine combination. The main course I got was a kefta tagine with the fluffiest couscous you could imagine and an almost shatshuka quality to the tomato sauce mixture but even more delicate. I could eat this every day and certainly hang with the cool owner too. If you ever find yourself in Portland make sure you don't miss out on this world-class Moroccan spot.

Yelp
The owner and chef of Kasbah asserts it's the best Moroccan food in Portland, and I 100% agree. It's the best Moroccan restaurant I've tried on the West Coast so far! A cozy and charming hole in the wall! Btw, we arrived one hour before close, and more than half items on the menu were sold out or almost. Come early to try more!

Yelp
We were greeted with a friendly smile and great aroma upon entering. The owner was really sweet and the food came out fast. The stand out of our three dishes were the kefta and merguez, the meats and sauces were really well seasoned. Will definitely come again!

Yelp
This was a great find! We came for lunch and easily had enough food for dinner (maybe even breakfast the next day)! There seemed to be just one guy working there; he was friendly and clearly super efficient! 5 stars for him! You set up and bus the tables yourself, which was fine by me. The place is nicely decorated, and our table faced a little cacti garden that lined one window. I also liked the music -- there was some great guitar mixed in there! The seafood tagine was good! There was a good mix of seafood (scallops, shrimp, and fish) and veggies too. It was a tad too salty but I only noticed after a few bites. I liked that I could get it with rice to make it easier on my gluten sensitivity. If I lived in PDX, I'd definitely come back anytime I was craving Moroccan food.

Yelp
Kasbah has quickly become one of my favorite restaurants in all of Portland and todays visit solidified that with the wonderful food, service and the friendly hospitality of the owner. We had the chicken tagine, dip duo with zaalouk and chakchouka, yellow split pea soup, chicken bastilla, batbout bread and mint tea. The bread was hot, fresh, perfectly soft and chewy and reminded me a bit of pita, only much better. The dips are both quite distinct, complex and delicious, as was the soup, which was rich, nutty and very well seasoned. I honestly would be happy to just fill up on the soup, dips and bread it was so good. As for the rest, it just kept getting better. The chicken tagine with couscous was fantastic, not to mention huge, and my brother who has spent much of the last decade in the Middle East and neighboring regions said it reminded him of the food his friends mother would cook when he would visit and that the couscous was the best he has had. I would have to agree. The sauce in the tagine is so good and paired with the chicken, potatoes and olives it was such a nice dish to have on a cold, rainy fall day. Lastly I'll say the chicken bastilla is such a delicious and unusual blend of sweet and savory that is unlike anything else I've experienced and the pastry is so delicate, buttery and flaky that it was hard to not have more even though I was already so full. I highly recommend having some hot Moroccan mint tea along with your meal like we did, it is sweet, refreshing and made with a lot of fresh mint, the perfect post meal digestive. Lastly I very much enjoyed the friendliness of the owner and chef, who also was bussing tables, talking with the guests and taking orders in between cooking. Even with wearing so many hats, the service was great and we didn't have to wait long for our food. I will certainly be back here many times to come. P.S. try the lamb merguez sandwich, it is incredible.

Yelp
Delightful people, beautiful place, excellent food, and affordable. Exquisite split pea soup. Thank you!

Yelp
I recently ordered catering from Kasbah for about 12 people. Chef Naji was great to work with, super friendly, communicative and helpful. There was so much food for such a reasonable price. The food was also AMAZING, our group loved it. It's great to find a place that has great owners and great food! I would definitely take a trip to Kasbah if you haven't been yet! You won't regret it!

Yelp
I was just walking and I saw this restaurant, I really wanted Turkish coffee and I was not sure if they have it or anything similar ! Then I said to myself no it's Moroccan . All of a sudden the owner of the restaurant jumped out of the restaurant and said come in in . The door is open I said yeah I know but that's what I am looking for . I am addicted to Turkish coffee. He said I don't have that but I have Moroccan one that is really good and he invited me in to check it out. I went in and I said ok I will try it . He is a really nice gentleman with a great customer service skills . I ordered what he suggested and also coconut cookies . I loved it . I loved it . I never had Moroccan coffee before . And I loved the presentation. It was so cute . Unfortunately I am living in Portland otherwise I would go again . This spot is a hidden gem .

Yelp
Such an incredible restaurant! It was recommended to us by our Uber Driver (shoutout to Mohammed, who is from Morocco!) and we were not disappointed at all!!! The food is EXQUISITE! We had never tried Moroccan food and we have been missing out. The spices, herbs, ingredients....everything blended together so beautifully and it was something that as soon as it hit our mouths, we knew we found an instant favorite. The veggie couscous and the merguez (sandwich and plate) were out of this world.....but I need to rave about one thing in particular, and that is the Moroccan Mint Iced Tea. Wow.....just wow. I'm from Texas so I love my tea. When I say that this tea BLEW all other tea out of the water (no pun intended) I mean it. The owner is so sweet and nice. Try it out, you will not be disappointed. If anything, you'll be upset that you never gave it a shot in the first place, especially if you're not the adventurous type.

Yelp
A great gem find! Props to the owner for running this establishment as a one man show - from handling transactions to cooking to cleaning. This is more of a fast casual place where you order at the counter and you bus your own tables, which totally makes sense to ensure the owner delivers high quality food timely. We went here around 7pm on Friday and it was fairly busy, taking the last table that can seat 4+ people which somehow turned out to be the best table in the house - next to plants and a nice door, but it wasn't cold despite being seated next to the entrance with many people coming in and out. We ordered a lot of dishes to share family style, for more variety: Dip duo - zaalouk (tomato / eggplant) + chakchouka (roasted red pepper) - served with one pita bread which is very chewy and soft on the inside. It would be nice to have more than one pita bread but otherwise this dish was well executed. The zaalouk has a nice smoky flavor and I enjoyed it despite not being a fan of eggplant in general. Roasted red pepper was also very flavorful, kind of like a jam in the way they prepare it. Seafood tangine - you get a choice of rice or couscous for the tangine dishes so we selected differently for different tangines. The seafood tangine has generous amounts of small scallops, small shrimp, and fish arranged in couscous and some grilled vegetables. It is great that seafood is the same price as the other options which was the appeal to trying this dish out. Kefta tangine - beef meatball. This tangine comes with egg (with yolk that is somewhat runny) and we selected rice for this tangine. This is the best tangine dish we ordered. Merguez tangine - lamb sausage. This one was alright compared to the other tangines here. It was a bit surprising that there is a heavy spicy kick to the dish, but it was still a solid dish. I wished the lamb sausage had a bit more spice. Soup (split pea soup) - the soup has a deep pea flavor with a thick texture so it is quite substantial. Normally the soup is individual portion but since we ordered so much food, we decided to just share one soup just to try it out. Moroccan mint tea (large) - beautifully presented in an intricate teapot. Because there are 4 of us, we got 4 different cups as usually, the owner says the large is meant for 2-3 people only and the individual portion is for 1-2 people. The tea is quite sweet but not overbearing in the sense that I would feel sick after. The mint is fresh mint brewed which makes the tea particularly flavorful. Don't skip out on this especially if you go here with a group. The final total of all this came out to be around $17 per person which was an amazing deal for food of high caliber. There is a slight mishap of the dip duo given to the wrong table but the owner was quick to remake the dish and give it to us. Also, the restroom setup is weird as you have to go out of the restaurant and enter an unmarked door to use the restroom, as due to hygiene reasons, customers are not allowed to walk through the kitchen hall to enter the restroom which makes sense. Despite some blemishes to the dining experience, the overall food and experience are still strong 5 stars. I really enjoyed the food and the ambience, and it comes to no surprise this place is so highly rated.

Yelp
This is one of those unassuming places where you would not know that you are going to have some of the best food of your life. The food is so good and addicting that you would want to order everything on the menu. The chef is the owner and his wife is the hostes. Both are very nice and patient with all the questions. The restaurant itself is small but is well decorated with Moroccan and African decorations. I promise you you will not be disappointed...

Yelp
Love coming back to this place- the BEST MOROCCAN food in all of Oregon. Great service and premium food, such a great experience every time.

Yelp
Hidden Portland Gem. We ordered the garbanzo bean tagine with rice, a beet salad, and iced Moroccan mint tea. All of the flavors worked so well together, and the vegetables were cooked perfectly. Friendly and attentive staff, great music and ambience. Absolutely one of the best meals I've had in a long time, do yourself a favor and check this place out!

Yelp
This place is absolutely amazing! The decor is very nice and it has a wonderful feel of home. I loved the chicken bastilla. There is no way you can miss getting this. It combines both sweet and savory and joins these flavors together with lovely Moroccan spices. We shared the seafood tagine and the lamb sausages. They had couscous and rice. Wow! The seafood tagine had a lot of vegetables and a delicious mix of flavors. It had scallops, shrimp and white fish. The lamb sausages were delightful. We shared a large tea but this can easily be shared among 4 to 5 folks lol. A smaller tea works for just 2! Overall, great food and would definitely eat here again.

Yelp
I recently tried a hidden gem for dinner. We ordered the seafood tagine and a duo of dips, including zaalouk and chakchouka. The flavors were perfectly balanced, and it was clear the chef knew their craft well. The mix of seafood, potatoes, and couscous might sound unusual, but it worked brilliantly. The dipping sauces were the stars, especially the zaalouk, which was a flavor explosion. The place had a cozy, family-owned vibe that added to the experience. The service was okay, though it could've been better with just two staff members. The only downside was the location, with some homeless around, but the tasty food and charming setting made up for it. A unique dining experience to savor.

Jackie M.

Yelp
The proprietor was so rude to us. We didn't see the sign that said order at the counter. He yelled at us that he's the only one who works there so we have to order at the register. It was just such an aggressive encounter I kind of wanted to leave. But I was afraid I was overreacting. The food itself was good. But between the rude service and freezing cold temperature in the restaurant, it was so uncomfortable, I can't imagine coming back.

Yelp
Everything was absolutely delicious! The split pea soup and grilled cheese really hits in the cold weather. Felt like home. The kefta dish was very filling and just divine!! 10/10 recommend this place if you're in the area. The owner was very sweet and customer service was amazing!

Yelp
TL;DR Absolutely amazing, transformed my experience of dining. A definite highlight, perhaps even my favorite, dining experience of 2022. The food is mind-blowingly good, the value is just incredible, and I am eagerly awaiting the next time I go to Portland, just to eat here again. It's very quaint and charming, a hole-in-the-wall gem with beautiful decor and one guy running the whole operation! Came with three friends on Black Friday and the small place was about half full. Throughout our stay, it became full so that there was a line of one or two. The place is small and the entrance is not suited for lines, so the line didn't seem to get long. I've been putting off the review, so don't quite remember specifics of the food, other than I loved the flavor and ingredient blending of each dish. I would especially recommend the tagines (we got seafood, kefta, and merguez) and Moroccan mint tea. We also got the dip duo and split-pea soup, which were top-tier as well. Liquid-based dishes like the mint tea and split-pea soup may be ordered at the counter. Ambience - 10/10 -- Great decor, with plants on shelves next to the entrance and a large decorative door across from it. At our table next to the entrance, we got to enjoy all this, as well as a large glass window looking out onto the moderate rain. The layout of the dishes were a big plus to this and fit the setting well. Water is self-serve from a large jug on the side of the restaurant, and the cups are very clean. The restroom is a bit difficult to get to, as you have to either go through the kitchen (a no due to sanitation) or out the restaurant, and it's a single restroom that was surprisingly spacious. The inconvenience of the restroom is minor compared to the overall experience and even adds to the charm of the place -- taking the awkward pieces of the environment and making something incredible out of it. You are able to peek into the kitchen and see it's not that big, with stacks of ingredients neatly placed on large shelves, and it adds to the appreciation of the feat Kasbah is. Service - 10/10 -- It's just one guy preparing everything! Food comes out efficiently and almost without mistakes, which is incredible. He did forget the dip duo (apparently mixed up with a different order), so it came out of order (after main dishes instead of appetizer), but that's understandable with one guy managing everything and the complexity of the orders. The food was so good that this didn't matter very much! Quality - 11/10 -- I recall it being amazing. Value - 12/10 -- Insane value for food this good, came out to ~$17/person total and we were all /very/ full. Overall - 12/10 -- For me, this place was truly an experience. One man doing everything, doing it well and incredibly, and being able to see and share in the experience. It is incredibly evident the amount of heart and love placed into the dining here, and that is precisely the kind of thing that makes eating out special -- sharing an experience with friends, and an awe-inspiring one at that! It truly feels like a 15/10 with how well the elements synergized together. Despite small hiccups (dip duos coming late, restroom inconvenience), really /feeling/ the whole story built up lots of good momentum. Leaving, I felt this was a transformative experience for my paradigm for eating out!

Yelp
The tagine here is to die for! I'm partial to the merguez tagine, a flavorful & tender Moroccan sausage. Tagines feature your choice of protein over your choice of rice or couscous topped with a complex, bright tomato sauce which packs just the right amount of heat & two perfectly runny sunny side up eggs. Portions are generous & an awesome bang for your buck in a city of expensive food options. Owner is also friendly & cafe has a cozy humble vibe.

Yujin C.

Yelp
I rarely write reviews, but this place was an absolute gem. The portions were extremely generous; we had trouble finishing everything with three people, but it was so delicious that somehow we did. The price is very reasonable and the owner is super friendly and personable. Also, I also highly recommend the Moroccan mint tea!!!!

Yelp
First, the room felt layered with color and texture. A corner door with tall windows to the south and west welcomed us in. Behind the counter, an owner and chef from Fez, Morocco helped us chose a dish on the printed menu. Four of us enjoyed lamb and rice with a red sauce that woke up every part of our mouth! We sipped icy sweet mint tea and hot spice tea served on a velvet covered round tray. Because I had visited Morocco a few months ago, the owner talked to me later when I went up to the counter to ask him questions about his experiences here in Portland and there growing up. What a fascinating experience eating at his restaurant! I will look forward to trying all the dishes he offers.

Yelp
First time having Moroccan food and was super pleased I went to kasbah! Food: seafood tagine- a hearty amount of shrimp/fish with veggies over couscous and I felt so healthy as I downed the entire plate. Service: you place the order and then wait for food to be brought to you. Took awhile because the restaurant was full but not a crazy wait. Overall: would definitely come back to try some other dishes!

We had the chicken bastille (delicious sweet and savory filled pastry-- my favorite), kafta tagine, and tagine merguez (lamb sausage is made in house), along with a side of couscous to share and had enough food for 4 people. All tagine plates come with fried eggs + rice on the side / couscous--we had rice. The mint tea is warm sweet and delicious! Definitely order the whole pot! Only wish is that they had some sweets for dessert. The location is near Chinatown and is a very good price point for the quality and size of portions

Yelp
Kasbah Moroccan Cafe is a small spot specializing in sandwiches and tajines. I tried the merguez tajine, which was 4 lamb sausages and two fried eggs in a bed of couscous covered in a spicy tomato sauce. The serving size was generous and I loved that the egg yolks were still runny. The only thing is I wished the tomato was a bit less spicy. About half way through the dish, I found it overwhelming and started scraping it off. Overall though, it was tasty and I'd try the other tajines.

Yelp
This place is absolutely amazing. I'm upset today is my first time trying it. We started with the bread and duo dip (amazing eggplant), and the romaine salad (so fresh - had chickpeas and carrots and tomatoes and cucumbers), and for the star of the show we had the chicken tangine on rice. We added a side of beef and lamb sausage. All the meat is halal and the beef and lamb are life changing. Spicy sauce and tender meat. Inside is clean and nicely set up. There is counter service and they are quick and attentive. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Had a great lunch here for the first time today. The pita and dipping sauces were so fresh and tasty. And the lamb was delicious. The chicken tanging was delicious. The restaurant is clean and service fast and friendly. Great restaurant.

Yelp
I am not someone who likes to spend time giving my opinion on reviews, but I had the seafood tagine last night for dinner and discovered that I actually like Moroccan food. I was very scared to try something new and boy am I glad I did. The spices and the flavors were absolutely amazing and the service was warm and friendly. It was like eating a hug; my new favorite comfort food.

Yelp
Going to start off by saying that I don't know what good/authentic Moroccan food is and this review is based on my personal palette. It was ok but will not be returning. FOOD - Chicken bastilla: probably my favorite of the dishes. Was in the appetizer section and is a very interesting somewhat confusing combination of sweet and savory. The outside is a flaky crust with powdered sugar and the inside is a savory chicken concoction. - Garbanzo bean tagine: vegetarian stew seemed well rounded in texture and flavor but nothing to write home about. Best of the tagine we tried. - Chicken tagine: came with 2 smallish thigh-drumb sticks which if you are a protein person, does not seem like enough for the size of the dish. Lots of potatoes. - Merguez tagine: Ground lamb sausage. Had high hopes for this based on previous yelp reviews but my personal tastes said it was uneventful. There is a bit of heat I would say is medium-mild. All tagine came with choice of couscous or basmati rice. Preferred the rice. Cashier was not helpful with menu choice when asked for recommendations or what she would order "everything is good"... DRINK - Mint tea: VERY SWEET to the point we put more water. Disappointed. PARKING Street parking. There is a pay lot diagonally to the restaurant which was very convenient.

Yelp
Although this café is small and low key, the food is scrumptious! I used to have a Moroccan restaurant near me, but they closed long ago. Lunch here at Kasbah brought all of my favorite flavors roaring back to me and it was wonderful! I will be sure to eat here again next time I'm in Portland. Don't miss the Moroccan mint iced tea for a real taste treat!

Yelp
My family and I stopped in here for a quick bite before visiting the Chinese gardens. We all really enjoyed the food! The owner was very polite and service was excellent. I'd recommend this restaurant to anybody looking for good Moroccan food.

Yelp
My absolute favorite food from this place was the merguez lamb sausage tangine! It was a little spicy (for me) but the olives were the most spicy! The sauce was so good. I love the taste of cumin in this dish. I was surprised that the mint tea was made from fresh Moroccan mint! It was very sweet though.

Yelp
One of the best meals I've ever had with my family! We had the chicken pastilla, couscous salad, seafood tagine, 7-vegetable tagine, and mint iced tea. Everything was superb and if I could give this place more than 5 stars I would - I think it deserves some Michelin stars. Small family run atmosphere with pleasant decorations and comfortable service - you order at the counter and get your own water, which was easy and convenient. Definitely check out Kasbah when you're in Portland if you like Moroccan food or want to try something new, it's a top notch dining experience.

Yelp
So rare to find a place with a perfect 5 stars with so many accumulated reviews, but Kasbah lived up to the expectations and then some. The atmosphere feels very nice and authentic, a vibe that is accentuated by some really nice regional and cultural music. The owner is also the cook, and was pretty much a one man show there who takes your order at the register. We did not mind that it was quasi self service, that you had to walk outside to another door to use the bathroom, or that the ventilation at times wasn't the best. It would be very unfair to judge this place on those merits. Because the food and drink were some of the best we've had, and definitely the best Moroccan food either of us have ever tasted. We had the Lamb Sausage and Chicken Tagines and for $15, it's probably one of the better deals in town especially with how much food you get, and tasted absolutely brilliant. When food is so well prepared with such good ingredients, and can literally make you feel like you've been transported to another part of the world, you know you've found something special. We also had a large pot of the mint tea; both of us declared it was the most amazing and authentic tea we've ever had in our lives **(Full Disclosure: this is a sweet Moroccan tea, and is served towards the end of the meal, and it is beyond phenomenal, but just needed to note this so people wouldn't expect a traditional mint tea you'd buy at the supermarket)** We CANNOT wait to go back and try other dishes, and of course have more of that mint tea!

Yelp
Fantastic, flavorful and nourishing food. I got the chickpea tagline and my friend got the Moroccan grilled cheese with a side of the lentil soup. We are both delighted with the food, service and the ambience. Perfectly spiced and generously portioned, v we left full and happy. My disappointment is that I am leaving town tomorrow and I won't be able to get another meal here. If I am back in Portland again, this place would definitely top my list.

Yelp
Idk what was more impressive, the taste and quality of food, or the story behind this owner operated small business. We ordered Chicken Bastilla and the Vegetable Couscous Tajine. Both were extremely delicious and well prepared. Highly recommend. As for the ownership, he is a "One-Man-Marching-Band," but he does it with great joy and professionalism. Please go and support this American Immigrant from Morocco as he aspires toward the American dream as a small business owner working hard to support his family.

Yelp
Loved our lunch sandwiches! Easy ordering, quick service. Friendly place to leisurely enjoy lunch or eat and get back to work! We'll be back for lunch and look forward to enjoying dinner!

Yelp
I loved every bite of food I had here at Kasbah! The Chicken Bastilla was like nothing I've had before. The pastry was flaky and buttery while the chicken filling inside was full of flavors with the well-balanced spices. Surprisingly, the copius amount of icing sugar and cinnamon on top of the Bastilla tie everything together perfectly - the ideal blend of sweet and savory. Got to say this one is a must here! The Zalouk which is a dip consisting of eggplant and tomato was also a hit. It was cistrusy and fresh because of the tomatos and had a slightly thick consistency from the blended eggplant; the flavor was, again, spot on. The Zalouk came with a side of Moroccan bread that is similar to pita bread other than that it has a rougher and thicker texture. However, it was the perfect side for the dip, soaking up all the flavors with its coarser consistency. The Seafood Tangines added the necessary proteins to the meal with plenty of scallops, shrimps, and a couple of slices of tilapia. All the seafood was well-cooked. The tangines also came with a lot of stewed veggies, adding natural sweetness to the dish that balances out the sourness of the dish. The tangine is served with a side of either rice or cous cous. The food was stunning but I had to duck one star for the rather negligent service. We got to the place right at the dot at 11AM but the store was still closed and being set up. Nobody approached us to inform us of what was happening and we're left waiting cluelessly outside. Once we entered and took our seats, still nobody approached us or informed us of where we could get a menu. It took us awhile to order because we weren't sure of what was going on...There seem to only be 2 people working in the restaurant and both appeared unapproachable and cold at first. The person at the counter also seem new and wasn't sure of what he was doing. Nevertheless, the food was definitely top-notch and I'll certainly be back for more Bastilla just perhaps at a later time of the day when maybe the staffs are more attentive/active

Yelp
Food is fantastic and the Mint Tea is delicious. Sat and chatted with the owner, first generation from Morocco. That day I was in town for the Blazers game, and he actually catered the NBA team earlier that day. If you're in the area I highly recommend stopping by for Merguez Sausage
