Inside the New Brooklyn Restaurant Mixing Malaysian, Caribbean, and Italian Flavors | Eater NY

"Propelled by the momentum of Hainan Chicken House, this Greenpoint follow-up opened in early December and channels Chris Low's Malaysian roots and Brooklyn upbringing into a Malaysian menu threaded with Caribbean and Italian American touches; as he puts it, "all those cuisines bleed into the menu," sometimes overtly and sometimes subtly. Dishes include a Caesar kerabu with sambal, crispy anchovies, kerisik, and chicories like Castelfranco or radicchio; a large-plate redang made with oxtail and a mix of Haitian djon djon rice and Malaysian nasi ulam; small plates of curry puffs and paratha with dal; noodles such as abacus seeds made with gnocchi-shaped taro; and the family's Hainanese chicken, with habaneros and scotch bonnets appearing elsewhere. Low notes that his family's hometown of Klang has its own food culture, from the liberal use of dark soy in bak kut teh to a char kway teow that differs from Penang's, and the restaurant's name is the "antiquated spelling" of the city. The space, designed with a filmmaker's eye, leans into Wong Kar-wai's In the Mood for Love and an "amalgam of memories," with a hand-tiled floor resembling a topographical map of Klang, gingko motifs, hand-painted mirrors, and family photos from the '50s and '60s. Open for dinner and weekend brunch, it is awaiting a liquor license; when it comes, expect cocktails and natural wines." - Nadia Chaudhury

"The team behind Sunset Park’sHainan Chicken Househas a new spot in Greenpoint called Kelang, named for their home city. The Malaysian spot has some riffs, such as ravioli in brodo with lime leaf ricotta, alongside classic food, like rendang, Hainanese chicken, and parathas stuffed with red lentil dahl. We came for an early dinner and ordered the Paratha, Moonlight Kway Teow, Bak Kut Teh and Rendang. Paratha was light, fluffy and the daal base had just the right amount of spice. Delicious! The Kway Teow was great too, with great char. The littleneck clams added brine to the dish. Bak Kut Teh was herbal, dark and the portion was huge. The Rendang was extremely rich. All in all, not "traditional" Malaysian food but an excellent modern take on classic dishes.

Flavors were phenomenal, interior was beautifully designed, and staff were super attentive. This was on the list and is honestly paving their own lane on the type of food theyre putting out. Got the charred cabbage, abacus seeds, rendang, chicken soup. First time ever not wanting to finish the meal in attempts to savor every bite

I think the paratha stood out most. the chicory salad was definitely powerfully bitter and tasted new but could've been balanced better, it lingers on the palate. hainanese chicken was nothing to rave about, for the price I would think it shud be spectacular. oxtail rendang sounds better than it looks, tasted okay but could've used more spices. char kway teow was ok, hokkienmee was way too liquidy. lowkey everything has a mild burnt taste. overall I was hoping for the food quality to be better proportional to its prices, I personally would like to see this restaurant do well. ambience and vibes are very nice. service was good.

The space is beautiful with a vintage but modern feel, impeccable food and a perfect menu for sharing. Our favorites were the Charred Cabbage, the Paratha, and Hainanese Chicken. A welcomed addition to the neighborhood!

We were initially excited to find this new Malaysian restaurant bc my partner is actually from Malaysia. However, the experience turned out to be quite disappointing. The food is not restaurant level - roti tasted like it’s from the freezer, kway teow was served lukewarm with no wok hei, and lei cha really missed the mark. Service was also very mediocre. Ambience was good though but I don’t understand the current 5 star rating. Personally would not come back and would not recommend.

Delicious food and exceptional service. The oxtail was comforting and complex, with just the right amount of spiciness. The blue oyster mushrooms were juicy and satisfying. Pork belly was scrumptious and perfectly cooked, The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated, sound level is comfortable and lighting is pleasant.

The atmosphere and service was great. The food I had high hopes for and was very disappointed. Every dish was way too greasy. There was an overwhelming liquid smoke or smoked hickory flavor in the dishes and also a strong bitter burnt flavor. I saw the vision of creativity and fusion of flavors but the flavors were not working together while also lacking unfortunately. The price to portion plus quality also did not match. The calamansi drink was good though. I know it’s a new restaurant and they’re still working on it, I hope things get better.
