Kiez is a vibrant modern biergarten in Highland Park serving up delicious German fare and a stellar beer selection in a cozy indoor-outdoor setting.
"Kiez strikes an unpredictable balance between family-friendly brewpub and a better-than-average beer garden, with indoor and outdoor spaces that both feel a little too small. But the surprisingly affordable German beer list and comprehensive menu, including flammkuchen (a crispy Alsatian flatbread), make it worth the search for parking on this busy stretch of York Blvd. The obligatory schnitzel—chicken, pork, or veal—comes perfectly crisp-tender, and an optional crushed-up pretzel breading and thick, beer-infused cheese sauce makes it even better. The potato salad is a little too mayo-y and the sauce on the currywurst is too thick (and expensive), but the sausage platter is a crowd-pleaser and the sauerkraut is tart and sinus-clearing. Tip: come on your birthday with 10 drinking buddies and get a giant glass boot full of lager on the house." - Andrew Ryce
"Kiez Küche & Beer Garden recently opened in Highland Park and fans of Bavarian delights showed up in full force to support the business on a recent Friday night. Families and their strollers packed the front patio facing York Boulevard, while folks on date nights settled in the dining room. The chilly autumn evening called for a glass of gluhwein to start, the hot spiced mulled wine garnished with a slice of fresh orange was just the thing to warm us up before digging into crisp potato pancakes and a soft pretzel. The highlight of the evening was the hearty bowl of beef goulash served over homemade spätzle. The homey stew, chock-full of tender beef and carrots, stuck to our bones in the best way. A flakey apple strudel made for a fine German finish." - Eater Staff
"A German restaurant and beer garden called Kiez recently opened at 4939 York Boulevard in Highland Park in the former Wolfie’s Hot Chicken and Hinterhof space. Behind the new business are partners Bjoern Risse and Bülent Yildirim, who run the restaurants Wirtshaus on La Brea Avenue and Rasselbock Kitchen & Beer Garden in Long Beach and Mar Vista; both are originally from Hagen, Germany. The welcoming indoor-outdoor space includes a piece of the Berlin Wall. The “modern Berlin-style biergarten” serves German staples, like schnitzel, soft pretzels, currywurst, spaetzle, and apple strudel, along with 30-plus mostly German and Belgian beers; a full liquor license is slated for the future. Kiez is also serving a few different flammkuchen or German French flatbreads: the classic comes with creme fraiche, bacon, arugula, and Parmigiano Reggiano, while the supreme has tomato sauce, spicy beef sausage, pepperoncini, and spicy aioli. Kiez is open Monday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.; and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m." - Cathy Chaplin
