Fudge Factory Kilwins Makes Its D.C. Debut in Navy Yard - Eater DC

"Kilwins, the nostalgia-inducing ice cream shop and candy store chain largely sprinkled along the East Coast, unveiled its first D.C. store on Monday, June 28. The 1,200-square-foot location offers a variety of confections made on-site, including fudge, caramel corn, brittle, bear claws, and marshmallows dipped in chocolate and caramel. The 74-year-old brand plans to plant three more shops across D.C. in the next five years." - Tierney Plumb

Sweets Shop Kilwins Will Begin Its D.C. Expansion With a New Store in Navy Yard - Eater DC

"Kilwins, the nostalgia-inducing ice cream shop and candy store chain largely sprinkled along the East Coast, will soon make its D.C. debut with a new store next to Nationals Park. The 1,200-square-foot location will be operated by the same ownership group as Tap99, a pour-your-own beer bar opening next-door around the same time in June. Kilwins plans to plant three more shops across D.C. in the next five years, with a neighborhood wish list that includes Georgetown, the Wharf, Chinatown, and Buzzard Point. D.C. franchisee Jason Cherry (Mission Escape Rooms) hails from Annapolis, where a well-known Kilwins curbs sugar cravings year round. There’s another local location in Alexandria. Along with cooling down customers with loaded ice cream flavors, Nats fans can expect a familiar lineup of chocolates, fudge, caramel apples, and other confections. The brand’s old-timey design full of dark wood finishes will get an update at D.C. stores that plan to incorporate silver-and-gold wallpaper and extravagant light fixtures." - Tierney Plumb

Google
Location is prime. Store was well presented. Staff was friendly and patient. Had a sweet tooth and couldn't decide- fudge, candy apple, a chocolate dipped delight. Ended up getting a sundae. My ice cream was delicious. Hit my craving spot just right.

Google
Had such a wonderful experience here! Staff was super friendly and engaged with customers. Makieh was such a delight to meet after a long day. The ice cream was excellent. Overall, amazing place to stop in to get ice cream!

Google
Kilwins Chocolate & Ice Cream is an absolute gem! From the moment you walk in, you're greeted with the delightful aroma of freshly made waffle cones and chocolate. The shop is immaculately clean, and the staff is always friendly and welcoming. The ice cream is incredibly creamy and rich, with a wide variety of flavors that will satisfy any craving. I tried the salted caramel and the toasted coconut, and both were phenomenal. The chocolates and fudge are also top-notch—decadent, smooth, and bursting with flavor. What sets Kilwins apart is the quality of their ingredients and the care they put into making each treat. You can watch them make the confections right in the store, which adds a fun and engaging element to the experience. Whether you're a local or just visiting, Kilwins is a must-visit spot. It's the perfect place to indulge your sweet tooth and enjoy a bit of nostalgia with their classic confections. Highly recommend!

Google
The staff at this location are fantastic -- and the products (ice cream cakes, in particular!) are amazing. Lorraine the manager went out of her way to ensure we had two cakes for our special occasion. Everyone loved them. Very grateful and highly recommend!

Google
The ice cream was excellent. The worker was nice and the place was clean. 5 stars.

Google
Had a most pleasant experience with the two ladies working this evening who were gracious and accommodating. (And, my favorite flavor was in stock at this location, so definitely a double win!) Thanks for making my day better.

Google
This place is amazing, starting by the smell of the store: sweet and enjoyable ice cream and waffle cones! They have a good variety of candies that go from chocolate to candy apple. The staff is really friendly!! They just got a loyal costumer and I highly recommend it!

Yelp
I love Kilwins. Their ice cream is so good. I always sample a few flavors, but always go for the New Orleans praline. It's is absolutely delicious. I've never tried anything else, but the fudge and sweets look very good. Staff at this location is extremely friendly.

Yelp
This cute ice cream shop is located right outside of the home gate at Nats Park. Super convenient to have on a hot summer day. The ice cream was $$ but it was very good, super creamy, and good portion. I also grabbed a water bottle to take into the park. You won't find this ice cream past the main gate.
google avatar

Yelp
Kind employees with greetings, clean shop, and good ice cream! Sad they don't serve sugar cones, but I was asked if there were any to try and I liked the toasted coconut a lot more than expected. The waffle cone even comes fresh + warm!

Yelp
Ordered a chocolate covered pretzel for $2.99 and the pretzel was stale. The service was nice and the chocolate was good which is why i gave it 2 stars.
google avatar

Sadie N.

Yelp
Solid selection of flavors and various candies, connected to the tap wall bar by a small hallway. Can get busy after baseball games but was able to grab ice cream pretty quickly one evening and taste various flavors before purchasing.
google avatar

Yelp
This is one of my go to places for desserts in the area. Unfortunately, they're not open 24/7 as you'd want. Or it must just be me that has a crazy sweet tooth like that. I recommend the chain for ice cream, chocolates, cookies, candy apples, etc. The pics should make you . Give it a shot if you haven't already. Although there's a Coldstone nearby I'll still choose here that has more variety and not just ice cream.
google avatar

Scarlett D.

Yelp
Came in on a cold day for a cold treat. I got the praline ice cream with a waffle cup. My friend got chocolate with chocolate fudge. The workers were sweet and let us sample their favorites and gave us recommendations. It's a cute shop with candy and other chocolate goodies as well.

Yelp
If you are ever on the water and just want to grab something sweet stop by Kilwins. They have tons of ice cream options and options for my dairy free people. They also have different cone sizes and types. They do not have seating inside but there is plenty of space outside for a nice ambiance to enjoy. The service is great as they have efficient lines and can get lots of orders out. Def will be back this summer.

Yelp
The ice cream was sooo good!! Got the bourbon caramel ice cream and the toasted coconut -wowww

Yelp
I had tickets to a Nats game and was walking the neighbourhood looking for ice cream before going into the stadium, so this place drew me in with their promise of ice cream. It was a clean store and well-situated near the stadium. But it was also empty (on a hot day, right before the game) which should have been a warning sign. There are tons of other stuff like chocolate and non-ice cream things in most of the footprint of the store, the ice cream station is at the back. I was not thrilled with any of the flavours but I had not seen ice cream anywhere else nearby and the Nats didn't seem like a team that would have dippin dots (unlike the Rockies) so I took my chances here. My two berry pie, small, ended up at almost $10. It was the dullest ice cream I had ever had taste-wise (think of water flavoured ice cream) and as I took it for a walk around the block to finish before going into the stadium, I realized why it was so bland. Most of my cup was legitimately just ice. I took some photos, there are ice chunks in my ice cream. How is ice in a two berry pie? That would be a lousy pie if ice is one of the berries. Ice ain't no berry where I come from. For $10 skip this place, their ice cream is bad and they should feel bad selling ice chunks disguised as two berry pie ice cream.

Yelp
An overall very good experience at Kilwins on the Washington Nationals baseball stadium grounds. The ordering process is often very quick and efficient. The customer service is OK and the ice cream is always consistent. The ambiance is very appropriate for an ice cream parlor. It is very reminiscent of an old town, but upscale, candy shop and ice cream parlor. Although this is a good location the parking is a nightmare, so unless you are already in the area, on foot, it is almost impossible to drive into this area for an ice cream-only mission without having to double-park or pay for parking in a nearby garage or lot. Also, entry can be a challenge on game day, so consider these circumstances when planning a visit. I will continue to come here when in the area. Give them a try.

Yelp
Visited Kilwins after walking by it a few times. It's a beautiful decorated ice cream shop. It has a wide array of sweet options. The staff were nice, but a bit slow on making my milkshake. It wasn't crowded and there was no line, so a 10 minute wait for a milkshake was too long in my opinion. The butter pecan milkshake was nothing special, so I didn't bother finishing it.
google avatar

Candice H.

Yelp
My absolute favorite ice cream. I went here four times in ten days. Now I'm in a rehab program for it. Warning, I like super sweet desserts. Some may find this place too sweet. If you're like me, the Praline flavor and the Marshmallow S'mores flavor in a waffle bowl.
google avatar

Jordan U.

Yelp
My photo says it all. This ice cream is so phenomenal that I forgot to take a photo before I devoured it! We got the cookies n cream, salted caramel and the praline, which stole the show!!! 15/10 creaminess. 15/10 flavors. Maybe the best ice cream in DC.....
google avatar

Star T.

Yelp
The ice cream parlor is so cute and it's spacious inside. The ice cream tastes amazing. I got the cookie and cream milkshake (a classic of course) and it tasted phenomenal. The service was amazing. They let me try a few different flavors to see which one I liked best. It sits across from the Nationals stadium. A perfect treat after watching the home team win. Happy eating!

Yelp
I love Kilwins. They have amazing sweet items. There is a variety of fudge, chocolates and other treats. This is a great place to buy gifts, especially for special occasions. It is just down the block from Navy Yard metro.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow, the ice cream was amazing. I had a scoop of vanilla ice cream; it was so creamy. The service was great, super friendly staff.

Yelp
In terms of decorations and everything, it is very clean along with the fact that there are souvenir items such as chocolates, gummy bears, and candies stacked in the display cabinets when you come in. Over at the front counter near the cashier, there's the ice cream selections, and when I went on to try some of them, the sample portions are huge, and so is the ice cream portions themselves too. I got the toasted coconut and the chocolate toasted coconut, and they taste exceptional. I like the fact that the coconut chunks are crunchy, though since the portion is huge compared to other ice cream stores in the area, the ice cream tends to be a bit too sweet the more you eat it. For the price, it is a great value. 8.8/10 for the ice cream, rounded up for the service!

Yelp
We typically seek out places we don't have at home and I was glad we found Kilwins. This was super close to the Navy Yard/Ballpark location in the M and our hotel. The staff were helpful and encouraged my daughter to try some ice cream flavors out instead of settling for chocolate! After tasting a few, she opted for fudge brownie. I had my eye on that caramel apple while the hubby went for a hand sized pecan caramel cluster--his favorite. My son tried their butter pecan as that is his favorite. This is a cute little place and full of character. There are lots of other items to purchase especially for Easter. Try it out!
google avatar

Yelp
Love Kilwins! Clean and friendly and lots of really great choices from ice cream to fudge to caramel apples!
google avatar

Sabrina G.

Yelp
I love this place ice cream! The chocolate is a little too expensive for me and too rich but they still getting this 4/5 because I just love love their ice cream. They have one coming to the wharf, they have a location at navy yard and another one in VA. I've been to the location at Navy Yard and VA and I love the staff vibes! This is the place to get ice cream this summer! They also move very quickly.
google avatar

Kyle N.

Yelp
Great ice cream, great chocolates! Tried two flavors; pistachio and sea salt caramel, both very good. I also tried the orange peel chocolate and the chocolate covered marshmallows, loved it!
google avatar

Cynthia H.

Yelp
The ice cream was so creamy and rich and fresh warm waffle cones! The staff at was so helpful and offered amazing service. I love that ambiance was so festive for Christmas!
google avatar

Patrick G.

Yelp
Great little dessert shop in Navy Yard, with a pretty high price point for what you get... The two workers were both friendly and let us sample a bunch of different flavors before ordering ice cream which was appreciated. Decided to order the mint chocolate chip, and sea salt caramel. Both were very rich and tasted great but it was a $10 cup of ice cream. I will probably not return because of how expensive it is, but the ice cream did taste great.
google avatar

Britney G.

Yelp
Came in to try their ice cream after dining at a nearby restaurant. When we entered the manager immediately greeted us and everyone as they entered. The young lady who packed my ice cream was very nonchalant and seemed annoyed to help us.. I got the turtle ice cream and really didn't care for it. I love ice cream but for some reason the ice cream base flavor was just off. I had my fiancé try it and he agreed. But try for yourself! Everyone's taste buds are different and you may enjoy it.
google avatar

Jay N.

Yelp
This is some of the best ice cream I've had - and I absolutely love trying new ice cream shops. Hands down in the top 3. I got the flavors Kilwins Tracks, District Mud, and Marshmallow S'mores. So creamy and flavorful!!
google avatar

Gerald H.

Yelp
Stopped here on a Saturday night (not during a baseball game) to get dessert since the place we ate at didn't have a dessert menu and our hotel was right next door. First thing I noticed was the size of this place - area where they make the waffle cones, an area for take away pre-packaged candies, and a counter for ordering chocolate and different candy and creations. We were looking for ice cream so we stood in line. Problem here is there is no menu up in plain sight and if there is a line, people waiting can't look and decide until they are right on top of the ice cream freezers. Putting a menu up would probably help traffic. I ordered a Sunday with the Kilwins tracks ice cream that came with whipped cream and malt powder. There were only three sundaes and not a whole lot of various toppings if you didn't want one they have made. Also no pb sauce, no pb cups, etc. Overall good. But lack of menu and lack of toppings holds this place back.
google avatar

Anushka M.

Yelp
Have tried other locations but this was the first time trying the Navy Yard one! Lots of flavor options and sampling is available again. Ended up getting a single scoop of Kilwins Tracks which was vanilla ice cream with fudge swirls and chocolate covered peanut butter truffles. It was delicious. We also got the toasted coconut flavor which we've had before.

Yelp
Such a huge fan of this sweets shop! Every holiday I stop by to have mini custom themed treats made for my preschool class. The manager and his team are always great to work with and the little ones just love them! They can't wait for Valentines Day!

Yelp
Dark Chocolate. Some like it. Others tolerate it. Most hate it. I LOVE IT!! The bittersweet confection has been my "loyal companion" since I was a kid!! It got me through a lot of tough times in my life. My latest haul was a doozie!! I could not figure out what I wanted to eat so I got almost every chocolate in the window?! Pardon my messy chocolates photo. I was going for a dark chocolate lover effect... My favorite thus far is the dark chocolate almond toffee bars. Fast forward to 2020. The height of the COVID pandemic. I needed my old faithful friend to get me through some tough times yet again. Low and behold I found my beloved dark chocolate at @kilwinsalexandria. I could not be more grateful to @kilwinsalexandria for staying open during such an uncertain and difficult time!! I thought I would not be able to enjoy as much of @kilwinsalexandria chocolate since we moved to DC. I was wrong!! Low and behold @kilwinsdc just opened up next door to me?! This must be a sign!! I really enjoy all the freshly made chocolates and the friendly staff @kilwinsdc. @kilwinsdc please consider making sugar free confections so diabetic customers can also enjoy a little bite of heaven. For now, this will probably be my last trip here for a while. I feel too guilty enjoying all of this when my other half is not supposed to be indulging in any of these sweets. Hence the request for SUGAR FREE. They do offer NO SUGAR ADDED but that is not the same thing... Lol I even asked the doctor just so I could continue to eat here. :( Highly recommend people trying their offerings!! Thanks Kilwin's DC!!

Yelp
If you're craving ice cream & sweets after a ballgame or while exploring Navy Yard, this is the place to go! There's a huge selection of ice cream flavors as well as a ton of chocolate covered goodies. The prices were fair and you get a good amount of ice cream in the 1 scoop size. I tried the butter pecan and s'mores flavors and loved both! Friendly staff and super quick service. This is definitely a DC staple for me.
google avatar

Janelle S.

Yelp
Cute little dessert shop directly across from the Nationals stadium. I went in and grabbed a pack of the assorted chocolate caramels and a scoop of the cake batter ice cream. Cake batter ice cream is my go to and Kilwins took a surprisingly good take on it! It is a vanilla ice cream with little chunks of cake and fudge / chocolate chips in it. I was also happy to see they had cake cones available. They also do let you sample the ice cream flavors. The assorted caramel chocolates were an assortment of milk chocolate and dark chocolate. Thin chocolate layer and a dense square of caramel. Overall very good, would be a cute gift for a loved one. Overall good experience but be careful price wise, one scoop of ice cream and a box of chocolate were about $30. Definitely a cute little date spot but be careful if you are bringing a big family, it'll cost you quite a bit.
google avatar

Mark O.

Yelp
I was able to go to Kilwins the with my friends visiting from Boston and his sister. We went to blue jacket right down the road for dinner and said is this something sweet. As soon as you walk in you get hit with the smell of fine chocolate and ice cream. Can't lie, I haven't have ice cream like this in a while. My friends we pretty impressed. I will be back. It's was awesome to try the samples as well.
google avatar

Wanjiku W.

Yelp
The most amazing chocolate covered strawberries! Very expensive but SUPER good. I ate mine all in one sitting. They have great hot chocolate too! The service that my fiancé received on bday was not good but other that that my experience here has been good. It's not cheap but the products are worth it
google avatar

Sophia H.

Yelp
Got a free scoop because of the National Ice Cream Day today! I got Kilwins Mud, which was vanilla ice cream with chocolate chips and caramel swirls, and it was AMAZING. A perfect, very satisfying scoop to cool off with after a morning run on a hot day. Also, very friendly service!
google avatar

Marissa G.

Yelp
If Kilwins wasn't so expensive, I'd easily rate 5 stars!! I think this might be the best quality ice cream that I've had in the Navy Yard, though it's still difficult to compare ice cream around here because most of the places offer a unique taste experience. Kilwins offers more of those "classic" favorites like mint chip, chocolate, strawberry, and my favorite -- praline!! It was very tasty and the best place in the neighborhood for those classic faves. As I stated above though, it is just over $6 for a single scoop, so it's a little pricey for a family outing. The staff was so friendly and kind though, so I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Bri J.

Yelp
This place was great, but a little overwhelming to a first-timer. There were a ton of sweets and options!! The staff member who helped me was kind, and helped me get one scoop of two different flavors (peanut butter chocolate and cookies & cream). Waffle bowl was warm, so that was impressive. The ice cream itself was average tasting -- so no 5 star wow factor -- but I would definitely return.
google avatar

Christine P.

Yelp
Think I could have found my new addiction.. the caramel popcorn. It tastes fresh and is crunchy!
google avatar

Robyn P.

Yelp
Super cute ice cream shop! Just opened near the Nats stadium and I'm glad I got to check it out before the masses! I went on July 5th so bonus on no wait AND the free parking! Try: Try everything! Just go! I had the lemon and raspberry sorbet in a fresh waffle cone and it was delicious! I wish I could've gone back for more! Heads up: Beware of the Nats crowd! They also have a good variety of flavors, AND sweets and candies apples! Oh! The service was awesome too! There was a young lady with short blonde hair who was very nice (and patient with the pregnant lady wanting all the samples). She is me. :-)
google avatar

Teri K.

Yelp
This was a $6 single scoop of ice cream and I had only had a couple of bites. Good ice cream but not worth the cost!
google avatar

Brandy A.

Yelp
Came here for sweets after grabbing lunch. The fudge is delicious! If you have a sweet tooth this is for you!!! I just got ice cream for the kids and my brother grabbed candy apples. The shop is cute and I loved the decor!! Stop by you won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Kathryn M.

Yelp
This is my 3rd Kilwins and I love them all!! We stopped here on a Tuesday early evening. I had my usual 1 scoop of toasted coconut in a cup, my little one had 1 scoop of superman on a waffle cone, and hubby had a cup of hot apple cider. Wonderful!! I also bought 10 pieces of marzipan candy. I actually went back the next day and bought 10, and then bought another 10 pieces the day we left. Can't wait to go back!!
google avatar

Marah C.

Yelp
Price high but ice cream was great. Chocolate coconut and s'mores in waffle cone was amazing. Service was quick and music was good!
google avatar

Juliann G.

Yelp
A bright sunny warm day. Perfect for a cone. We got cappuccino chocolate chip and kilwins mud (vanilla with chocolate flakes and caramel swirl). Great ice cream - not too sweet and nice texture. However, the scoop was barely there. I'm willing to pay over $6 for a cake cone with a single scoop if it's great ice cream, and I expected to pay more because we were next to Nats Park. But really? How can you tell the 20 something server that she made a piddly cone?

Danii B.

Yelp
Bryelle is amazing Great customer service and knowledge of menu I will definitely be back because of her and you all amazing ice cream
google avatar

Jake G.

Yelp
Do yourself a favor and get the peanut butter fudge. Lots of other great choices but take 1/4 pound of this hime and enjoy it with a glass of red wine.

Jonathan P.

Yelp
ice cream is good, but in the basic breyers way. it's not anything gourmet or special which is fine because that is what you are expecting. However it is $6 for a scoop which is wild.
google avatar

Geoffrey M.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream but on the expensive side for premium ice cream, even in an expensive city like DC.

Di M.

Yelp
Amazing ice cream and especially good ice cream cakes. Never ever been a fan of ice cream cakes but this one "takes the cake." Pun intended.
