"It may be because of its location in an otherwise-exclusive gated community, but The Sawyer is one of the best places for high-end, seasonal American cuisine without the usual large Truckee crowds. It’s a great choice year-round, but it’s especially enjoyable in the summer, thanks to a large patio area with fire pits overlooking the woods and mountains beyond.  The venue is small but most items can be customized, if, for example, you’d prefer the sriracha honey and house slaw of The Rocketbird sandwich added to your panko-crusted portobello on brioche (which you should). For those willing to drop a few million on a home in the community, you won’t need to book ahead—but those of us outside of the luxe Schaffer’s Mill need a reservation to make it past the neighborhood’s 24-hour gatehouse. It’s a beautiful hotel lobby with a long list of amenities and services but it’s severely lacking for the price. My ex mil stayed here when the hotel first opened and the room I recently booked looks much more worn than back then. There were cigarette burns on the leather clad desk, a giant dark stain on the floor, and a layer of dust and grime around wall outlets and furniture knobs. Aside from that we had to call maintenance twice because our bathtub drain was broken and the closet door wouldn’t open. He was the highlight of our trip because he was so kind and funny. All in all, the only reason we would book again is to have a big tub in our room. Otherwise we’d choose somewhere cleaner. The positives: our tub held two very large adults, could probably hold three small/petite adults and one tall/plus size person comfortably. The bathroom alone was very luxurious with a walk in shower next to the tub. If you forget anything at home be it a toothbrush or charger, the hotel will happily let you borrow one or have one for free. Parking: a self park garage underneath the hotel that is shared with nearby retail. Be prepared for tight spots and to remove all valuables from the car.

I must say, my friend and decided to visit Revival to try their tacos and happy hour drinks and I must admit I was not having high expectations for their tacos. I delightfully proven wrong, their beef and shrimp tacos were delicious. We also had their bartender Sonia make some delicious and refreshing tequila cocktails. We enjoyed it so much were thinking of going more often and actually staying the night to enjoy their reputable hospitality and of course we gotta get that pool vibe during this summer. We will be visiting and staying more often and try Sonia’s cocktail concoctions.

Our stay at the Sawyer was wonderful! From the time we drove up and greeted by the valet and then the front desk staff we felt truly welcome. Kimptons pride themselves on being pet friendly - the Sawyer is no different! Our golden retrievers were welcomed with treats and long ear scratches!||Our corner room was nice sized with 2 walls full of windows. The nice bright room offered comfort and all the amenities needed. ||Each encounter with a staff person was as welcoming as the first. At checkout, I even asked to speak with the manager to compliment them on their staff, property and overall presentation and to say thank you! The manager stated he had only been at the pry2 weeks but recognized that it was the staff were the true asset that made the property a success!👍

Google
Everyone was as friendly as usual. All the amenities, including the coffee and happy hour were great. ||Really seems like the company should invest in a better check-in system. The amount of struggle there usually is to log on or stay logged on or just check someone in seems really unnecessary, in this day and age.

Google
The Sawyer has always been an incredible hotel … love it & will stay there anytime I’m visiting Sacramento! Today I had a wonderful experience dealing with Niazi, the front desk and housekeeping manager. He was very gracious in assisting me with a last minute cancellation and offering to help with rebooking as well. He was also very kind and caring about the reason for my cancellation. This is a first class hotel with first class people. I highly recommend!! Thank you Sawyer/Niazi!! :-)

Google
Hotel is beautiful and kept clean. Check in desk had excellent customer service. Happy hour was a nice plus. The 4 stars is strictly because of the in room dining. The mac and cheese does not mention any thing about the atrocious amount of garlic. It doesn't mention garlic at all. It had so much garlic it was inedible three bites and I was legitimately ill from the overpowering amount of raw garlic.

Google
We picked The Sawyer specifically for Graduation-location is perfect. Front Desk very friendly- disappointed in room once we mentioned having our small dog the room we received had stains all over floor and older very warn furniture- for the price we paid we expected more. Room with only one chair for 4 people. We also won at check in 5,000 IHG points but never received. We called for extra Comforter & coffee pods- but they never came. We mentioned it to front desk they apologized & did allow a $50 credit. It is a beautiful Hotel in a wonderful location.

We came for my son’s graduation at UC Davis and I couldn’t have picked a better place since the ceremony was held in the adjacent King’s basketball arena! The hotel has wonderful amenities. There was a personalized card and mixed fruit & charcuterie plate waiting in the room upon arrival. There is a social hour in the lobby with great relaxing live music; and step outside to enjoy a range of culinary options.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I had the pleasure of staying here last night. We decided to do a staycation and stay in a local hotel. When we arrived, we were both greeted with Rose' and Jelly beans upon our arrival! I enjoyed chatting with Jewel upon check in, she was very welcoming. When we got to the hotel room, I received a text message from Jewel welcoming me to the hotel and to text the front desk with any questions I had which I thought was a nice touch. My boyfriend and I ordered two bacon cheeseburgers with fries from the room service menu, we both enjoyed them- they were a little overcooked but delicious! We called the front desk before bed for an extra blanket but we never received one, that was probably the only issue we had during our stay. We both slept amazing and loved how comfortable the bed was, it was so quiet for a Friday evening. I have never had such a quiet and comfortable stay at a hotel. The next morning we order blueberry lemon pancakes and two eggs with chicken sausage and toast. The pancakes were AMAZING and so fluffy, order them you won't regret it!!! We did not want to check out of the hotel, we both enjoyed it so much! Thank you for an amazing stay, we will be back!

Yelp
Was in town for a special occasion. Rooms were nice and the beds were plush. Just seem too chaotic when events and stuff are going on. And staff are not as personable as you'd hope when spending how much to be here. The event i attended was nice. The buffet style dinner was good but they would run out of certain dishes and it was a wait for replenishment. The stay was nice when it came to rooms. But everything outside could've been a better experience.

Yelp
For the price and how new this hotel is, I expected more. We didn't have a bad stay by any means. Staff was nice. But we had enough little complaints that added up that it was clear it wasn't a 5 star stay. I booked with Chase, they forgot my free welcome gift, I had to ask. We had to wait a significant amount of time to check in. Not a huge deal but a little annoying. They didn't have a water bottle re-filling station. That's not a deal breaker, but I did find it odd that a brand new, Californian hotel wouldn't have one. I've been to older hotels that had water bottle filling stations on every floor. Room was clean enough, and spacious. The look of the hotel was gorgeous, and it's so conveniently located right outside the Golden 1 Center. We stayed the night here for a concert which was the best decision bc the location is perfect and there's many restaurants in the plaza. Highly recommend staying here if you're going to a Golden 1 concert. They have valet parking as well as an underground parking lot (paid). We got room service for breakfast and it was pretty good. Overall, not a bad stay, but not an amazing stay. Could be better, but I would stay again if I go to a Golden 1 event. 3.5/4 stars.

Michelle O.

Yelp
Don't stay here! The valet crashed my car and is denying it. Terrible customer service.

Bryn S.

Yelp
The worst hotel I have ever stayed at. 1 night costed me $450 for the worst service ever. The front desk receptionist with the red hair was super rude and gave me a ton of additude when I was checking in. Where is the customer service here? Also - while I was getting checked out (fortunately it was not with the red haired girl) she was helping a guy next to me because he booked an appointment for his wife to get a massage and the hotels massuse never showed up and gave him really nasty additude and said she couldn't do anything about it. Did not give him any insight or anything on what he should do. The red haired receptionist truly ruined my experience at this hotel and I will NOT be staying here ever again.

Yelp
We decided to head up to Sacto for my birthday. We were going to meet my daughters boyfriend's parents so that was long overdue and we were very excited. It's funny that the name of this hotel is also my dogs name so we had to give it a try, and they accept dogs so that was nice. The normal time for check in is 4 p.m. here which is the latest that I've ever heard of, the latest is usually 3 but we were able to get 1:30 they let us check into a room that wouldn't be occupied the night before so we got the king room with a nice patio. The carpet was very spotty but this is to be expected with a dog hotel. I didn't go barefoot because that just freaks me out. The room was big enough which was nice. After the tiny rooms in Japan this was great. The beds were okay but they need an upgrade. The staff were very helpful and delivered us a welcome tray. It was delicious cheese with jam. The patio area was nice but very dirty, there was a cigarette butt out there. I mean they could have done a quick blow or sweep... The room was clean and modern which I like. The only thing that was bad was the paper products were very cheap for a $500 a night room. A new thing hotels have started to do is have one person that texts you throughout your stay to check on things. I think this is a nice feature. We had this in Scotland for the first time and we think it's smart. My daughter's best friend had stayed here for her birthday and rented out a cabana by the pool on the 3rd floor level. It's very nice. One huge minus was the kids parking our car messed up all my light settings, temperature settings, and music settings, I was LIVID!! This is so annoying since I will have to go back in my manual and reset everything... :( They should park the car and that's it. I know they must be bored but please!! ;( They definitely charge you for the valet service so that makes it more annoying! I mean $40 per night is fair because it's location but having those boys mess up my car like that is unforgivable! Like I always say; "Time is Money" and now I have to spend a good deal of time restoring all my settings.... time is a valuable commodity at my advanced age! Obviously I won't be coming back to this place again. There are many great hotels in this area and a lot of them accommodate dogs.

Yelp
This is a great hotel with luxury feel. The beds are comfortable and clean, the design is modern, large space, clean towels, nice fancy coffee and coffee machine, even provided a yoga mat. 24/7 gym and room service! The receptionist gave us an early noon check in. That was very much appreciated because we were tired from a long travel day. She was also nice and friendly. All the staff here greeted us politely, which made a even more pleasant stay and nice atmosphere. They were well trained. The Eco and Rig restaurent at the hotel lobby had quality steak from local ecological farms. It is also located at a nice shopping square, a 3-minute walk to the old Sacramental with cool stores and historical architectural buildings. We have a great rest there.

Yelp
My boyfriend & I stayed at the Kimpton Sawyer this past weekend after attending a concert at Golden 1 Center. With it being the beginning of December, the lobby was decked out in holiday decor, which made it feel really special. The service here is top notch, from valet to check-in to breakfast room service, every touch point felt first class. There were a few pain points (room 602) should Kimpton management care to look into them: the climate control in the room sucked. We were both hot, and it felt like no matter what we did there was just no airflow. The door to the balcony did not lock, which felt unsafe given the next room shared our balcony with only a tiny divider. The outlets next to the bed are too loose to hold a plug, so our phone chargers kept falling out. The handset on the phone didn't work; you could only make calls on speakerphone. And lastly, the Coke Zero I grabbed from the fridge tasted flat, and sure enough the expiration date on the bottom of the can was from about a year ago. I didn't inventory the rest of the fridge or snack drawer, but it made me wonder... how often are they checking the freshness of room amenities? Overall, it was a really nice stay and we will likely be back when we come into town for another event!

Nik N.

Yelp
I celebrated my birthday here and it was incredible. The staff all very excitedly wished me a happy birthday. The ambiance at night is so nice. The drinks were amazing. It was definitely a night to remember.

Katherin B.

Yelp
The hotel is beautiful, and customer service at check-in was excellent. The happy hour was a nice plus. The four stars is related to the in room dining. The macaroni and cheese did not identify that it would be LOADED with garlic to the point of being inedible. There is no mention of it on the menu. I tend to like garlic, but this overpowered the dish to the point of being sickening. Otherwise, the stay was enjoyable.

Maya S.

Yelp
My family stayed here for a 40th bday and Kimpton staff did an amazing job making sure he felt celebrated. They sent a c&c board with rosé as well as a handwritten note. Super cute. It is a bit pricey to stay the night but soo worth it, and super clean. Can't stay enough great things about the staff. Stay here!

Kimberly N.

Yelp
Great hotel and the view was pretty amazing. Upon arrival the hotel just smells really good. Water in the lobby. Check in was quick and we got some welcome treats in our room for our birthday. went to revival pool is a little bit small but the indoor outdoor seating of the restaurant was pretty neat

Alex L.

Yelp
First time staying at the Kimpton Sawyer Hotel! As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by staff to take my luggage and was given a glass of rosé! I was able to get checked in and made my way to my room quickly. Elevators are quick! There's plenty of elevators to work with so not much wait. My room was really clean! The hotel provided the basics like shampoo soap pens, but if you forget anything, they can also provide extra items like a tooth brush and tooth paste. I was able to check out quickly and head home the next day. Great stay! I would come again.

Mariah D.

Yelp
I'm happily writing an update to my previous review. One of the main reasons I was disappointed with the hotel during my last stay was because the pool was fairly chaotic and unusable, and when we spoke with the hotel about it, we were brushed off. However, I think enough people had concerns that the hotel took it seriously. They are now prioritizing a family friendly, safe, and relaxing environment for their guests, which I greatly appreciate.

Allen C.

Yelp
Beautiful hotel in downtown Sacramento. Came here for a work event where they booked out a foyer/balcony and had passed appetizers and food stations. Food flavor/tastes were OK, nothing crazy, but hard to make food for so many people in a limited amount of time. Bartenders were great and made tasty drinks/cocktails keeping the lines short. Very modern/beautiful architecture and the rooms were also well made/kept with excellent amenities. Parking is atrocious in this area, their valet is $15/hour and there is a daily cap. The area surrounding is not that great, so be careful walking around at night - plenty of homeless and drunk/meth roaming around.

Panda B.

Yelp
We finally managed to get a partial refund after a few emails and calls. Hopefully the future guests will have a better experience than us.

Laura W.

Yelp
Hotel itself was lovely - we were there for a birthday and wanted to spend time at the pool. The facilites and pool deck were great, as were the drinks and services. Downside was there were clearly escorts/prostitutes throughout the facility. One girl in a bikini had a tracking device on her ankle. Very young women with men parading around, women sitting in the lobby and pool deck that appeared to be 'working' or just off work. There was also a couple in the cabana being VERY physical that the staff had to ask to leave. Not sure if we were just there on a weird day or if this is the norm. Overall a good stay but this was a bit distracting and concerning.

Haiyang H.

Yelp
Took kiddos over for a weekend road trip/show watching last year in August. Here are some thoughts - overall very well kept hotel. All rooms are updated. Beds are comfortable. Facility was nice - very friendly and helpful staff on properties, they gave pretty good tips around too - on site steakhouse was pretty good. Room service was nice also - location was really good and very close to the old town for walking tours We stayed over to watch a cirque du Soleil show. It was a pretty awesome trip. If things lined up and we need to revisit Sacramento, we will stop by again.

Jessica N.

Yelp
Upscale boutique hotel in the heart of midtown directly next to Golden 1. The location could not be better. It's walkable to bars and restaurants and Old Town. Pet friendly hotel but they don't charge any fee. Valet for $40 or self parking for $28. They have a social hour 5-6pm where you get white or red wine with light appetizers. They have water in the lobby all day. Coffee and tea is served every morning in the lobby. You get a glass of Rosé upon checking in and it's served all day in the lobby. Rooms and bathrooms are quite large and very modern. The hotel has great amenities and definitely feels high end. I would definitely come back to stay again.

Jason K.

Yelp
Great hotel in the great location service and staff are excellent. The rooms are nice and large and they have Google Chromecast. Available the internet is very fast. One little annoying thing. I got to the room at 2 AM and had to set my own alarm clock. Also a piece of advice. It takes a while for the hot water to get up to your floor. So make sure you start that a couple minutes before hand.

Deborah S.

Yelp
My mother and myself stayed here last week for my nephews graduation from Sacramento State. Everything from parking valet to our room was smooth. I appreciated the bell man explaining the room to us. Our room was clean & up to date. My mother is 76 and very picky about everything so I appreciate what a wonderful experience this was. We also ate at the hotel restaurant! While we waited for our reservation we enjoyed happy hour drinks in the lobby. Thanks again we will be coming back for sure!

Bernardine F.

Yelp
Wow! This hotel does NOT have its stuff together. I've been trying to clear a charge I didn't make on my credit card since January. I sent multiple emails to the assistant front desk manager, asked for the Director of Guest Services to call me, followed up, followed up, emailed, followed up, and nothing! At this moment, I've been on hold with them for over 10 minutes and have been transferred to everyone but the person I need to speak with. So done with these people and such a waste of time.

Wendy W.

Yelp
It's a surprise to have such a great property filled with such marginal customer service. I have stayed here a half a dozen times and nothing ever gets better. Today the valet was the highlight go a great service contact! The restaurants couldn't help if you told them to... pricing is high here - look and locations great- service is worse than 95% of all hotels I stay in ...and that's a lot!

Arnel D.

Yelp
Another quick trip back to Downtown Sacramento and ended up here at the Kimpton Sawer. Such a comfy bed. I literally felt like I was on a cloud. The water pressure from the shower head was perfect . This time around though, I was on the 5th floor located just above Revival. I was concerned that noise might make it through the walls but it didn't. My other concern was that I'd hear noise from the street... Not an issue. The dual pane windows kept it all out. I love the location of this property. It can't be beat. Located smack dab in the middle of everything. The Starbucks Reserve, the skating rink as well as the Old Sactown Waterfront. Definitely worth every cent. I'll be back again.

Ryna D.

Yelp
Great hotel in Sacramento! This review is way overdue as we stayed here last winter. Really comfortable stay, very convenient location.

Tish B.

Yelp
Stayed here over the weekend for my birthday. Beautiful hotel. The lobby was nice and decorated with Christmas decor for the holidays... We stayed on the 7th floor near the elevator, which surprisingly was quiet. There were a lot of shows going on at Golden1 center the weekend we stayed. They provide a wine/beer hour each day from 5p-6p with some small bites. They offer coffee in the morning. The location is perfect, it is near a bunch of restaurants and shops. The room we stayed in was a decent size. The bed was comfy, the pillows a little too soft for the hubby but perfect for me. The only part that I didn't like was the half door shower and the sliding door for the bathroom. I would much prefer a regular door for the bathroom and a full shower door for the shower. Other than that it is a very cute and chic hotel. The staff was great. There is a parking garage below the hotel, $28 per day. All in all a great stay.

Bruna N.

Yelp
They're getting one star because it's a pretty hotel in a great location HOWEVER: 1. When we called the front desk for some toiletries, they never arrived. 2. When we ordered room service, it took three phone calls and two hours to get to our room. 3. After I had already checked out and got back home, I was met with two random charges on my credit card--$20 for a minibar charge (we never touched the minibar) and $453 for the stay which was already paid for upon booking!! Not only did I never sign off on these charges, but when I immediately called to rectify the charges, I was met with zero solutions and false promises of them being taken off. It's now been almost a week since I called and they haven't followed up like they said or done anything about it so I had to file a claim with my credit card. Incredibly unprofessional and not worth the headache.

Candi M.

Yelp
My family and I have stayed at the Kimpton Sawyer maybe 10 times in the last two years. Needless to say, we absolutely love The Sawyer and I am embarrassed that I waited until now to write a review. We've only ever experienced top notch hospitality and customer service at the Sawyer. The rooms are clean, spacious and modern. The beds are comfortable. The rooftop pool, MUAH! perfection! I'm also grateful for the complimentary wine & snack hour and morning coffee & tea bar, the onsite gym and even complimentary bikes and scooters you can use to explore downtown Sacramento and the river front. Alyssa the Front Desk staff person and Alejandro the Bell Man / Porter are exceptional. Can't wait to return.

Yelp
NEVER BOOK THROUGH EXPEDIA.COM OR HOTELS.COM Let me start with the hotel. This is a beautiful place to stay with truly amazing employees. Starting from the valet to the front desk and all others employed here. I arrived nervous as I was scheduled to take my state exam, but everyone truly made our stay pleasurable. I was able to relax in our room with a full bar, comfortable beds, a lovely shower, and a beautiful view. What impressed me the most, you need your card key to gain access to your floor. I like the extra security the hotel provides to ensure their guest safety. They do accept pets at no extra charge. The hotel also has a nice CLEAN fitness center, bar/restaurant, and a nice relaxing pool. They have nice eating places within walking distance, and shops as well. They truly take the extra step to make your trip easy. IF YOU WANT A BEAUTIFUL HOTEL WITH GREAT EMPLOYEES WHO CAN OFFER CUSTOMER SERVICE, THIS IS THE HOTEL YOU WANT TO BE AT. ****** NOW: NEVER USE EXPEDIA OR HOTELS.COM TO BOOK YOUR TRIP. Although you may think you're getting a bargain, that comes with a price to pay. This booking STEALS money from you through hidden fees and will blame it on the hotel stating "added fees" stemming from the hotel, when in reality it's another way to pay themselves. Expedia claims there is a PER ADDITIONAL PERSON CHARGE when the truth is the hotel ONLY charges for the room. There is no such fee as an "additional person fee" Rather than Expedia offering the refund on my card, they offered a coupon to use. To which I still haven't received. Imagine. A COUPON? That's their way of offering credit on my card. Ridiculous. Expedia and Hotels.com ARE COMPANIES THAT LOVE TO SCAM. I would never recommend them to anyone to use. I advised all my realtor colleagues and other networking companies not to use them. It's a shame as we always consistently travel for us, but these companies are greedy and have unscrupulous work ethics.

Beth G.

Yelp
Beautiful, fancy hotel in downtown Sacramento. Great location- just a 5 min walk to Old Town or the stadium. Accommodating staff. Restaurants near by are expensive, but their room service, oddly, was not and was super tasty as well. Free coffee and lemon water in the lobby.

Emily C.

Yelp
This hotel has a great view and so many things to do around it. Walking distance to Golden 1 center and plenty of restaurants around. For the price is decent, but I had a view of the hospital once lol umm ok that's cool. Staff is nice and attentive. Their food at the pool is pretty yummy. For a Sacramento hotel this is doable.

Michelle L.

Yelp
Stayed at the Kimpton Sawyer for a week in mid-July for work, and got a room on the 6th floor with a view of Sacramento, King-sized bed, walk-in shower. My "view of Sacramento" was not the Golden 1 Center side, but actually the Kaiser Permanente building. Didn't avail of too many of the hotel amenities while there like the gym or pool, Echo & Rig or Revival, but they did have tea and coffee in the lobby in the mornings, and wine between 5-6 PM social hour, pets allowed (I definitely saw some cats and dogs), courtesy bicycles, valet parking, and even complimentary yoga mat in-room, robe and umbrella also provided in the closet. The digital clock is also a wireless charger, USB ports and outlets, decent desk space and a comfortable bed. There is still a landline phone but you could also contact the front desk via text message. If you forgot any items they have a pretty good list of things they can provide for you like toothbrushes, toothpaste, phone charger, coffeemaker, hair irons, and more! My first night it was an easy 5-minute walk to dinner at Yard House. We had a charter bus for our group and it was simple to meet in the lobby and board. Even if we arrived back later at night it felt safe with the valet/security and front desk staff near the entrance. On my last night we also walked easily to Il Fornaio on Capitol Mall. It really is convenient to DOCO (Downtown Common) restaurants, and Old Sac. Upon checking out, it was simple to call a Lyft as well. A nice stay-cation for this local, and a great experience at this boutique hotel. Until I can truly travel again on business, this was still a swell week "away" from home where the local team could spend time with global visiting colleagues (~25 of us!).

Michelle V.

Yelp
Super disappointed with the Kimpton Sawyer Hotel. I have always had a good experience in the past here, but I have now been waiting in the lobby for almost two hours for my room when I checked in at 4pm, which is the guaranteed check in time. Not only do they still state that my room is not ready, I have now watched at least 10 others check in over the last 30 mins and get their keys. I have always appreciated the clean rooms and location, but I will now be looking into other options when in Sacramento.

Peter L.

Yelp
Central location, next to DOCO & Golden 1 Center, short walk to Old Sac & riverfront. The facility was chic & ultra clean, with unusally large gym & pool, complimentary daily social hour wine & morning coffee/tea, what is there not to like? The double queen room was spacious, the mattress was medium firm & pillows plush. Walk in shower was huge with identical shower heads on opposite ends, odd design. The pool was relatively large & i was able to do mini laps in the morning. The lobby was grand & inviting, dotted with lounge chairs it was ideal for relishing social hour drinks. There were several restaurants on site but Punch Bowl social was cool: it has a ping pong table & 2 bowling alleys in the middle of the restaurant! There were plenty of other dining options in the area. Homeless folks were omnipresent though I feel safe in the immediate area. If you wonder 2 blocks in any direction you might encounter interesting characters. Valet was $35/day vs $28 self park? We utilized valet & the response time was quick & service very friendly. There were several level 2 EV charging stations, i was told these are complimentary if you valet.

Allison H.

Yelp
So far, no good. Not a woman friendly hotel. Woman in couple places on waitlist for early check in. Male in same Couple walked up to desk and was given early check in immediately.

Mary W.

Yelp
Incredible staff, beautiful room, great location and outstanding room service! Had the eggs Benedict, potatoes and fruit !

Gloria M.

Yelp
I stayed here for one night and had a wonderful experience. The hotel is beautiful! The rooms are well designed and very clean. The front desk staff were amazing and very thorough. I didn't eat at the hotel restaurant but it looked like a nice place. I recommend upgrading for a better view. We upgraded for $20 and had a great city view. Overall, I had a positive experience and highly recommend this hotel. I look forward to staying at other Kimpton brand hotels.

Yelp
I'm giving the Sawyer two stars because the room was good. But the service was atrocious. It took us 45 minutes to check in because the woman handling our check in was mentally challenged as in that she was a moron. 3 couples checked in with her colleague in the time it took her to get us check in. After 30 minutes she said our room was ready and was about to walk away. My wife asked how we'd get into our room due to not having keys? Another 15 minutes and we had keys. I felt like Ben Stiller at the airport in Meet the Parents or we were on a hidden camera show. But no, it appeared standard protocol for the Sawyer. The next day I went to get coffee for my wife. But a bellman finished off the 1/2 and 1/2 and left it there. I asked the receptionist if the 1/2 and 1/2 could be refilled. I finally left after 15 minutes of waiting. We were also told by reception the only way to book a table at the hotel steakhouse was to book through OpenTable. But OpenTable didn't have any tables. Frustrated I went to the restaurant where they had no problem taking my reservation. Great hotel if you want a migraine brought on by pure frustration.

Yelp
My wife and I stayed at the Kimpton Sawyer in mid-February and I didn't want to wait too long to post this review, because the memories are still pretty fresh in my mind right now, and they're very pleasant, happy memories, so I wanted to recapture them. The little things go a long way with the Sawyer. For me, RIGHT off the bat, I knew it was going to be a great stay based on my excellent and pleasant check-in experience. And our room was ready, which is a huge bonus after you've been driving several hours to arrive at the hotel. The front desk representative was awesome, she was so pleasant and helpful, and just pretty much the ideal experience you'd want when checking in. But that was hardly the end of it, as they had a welcome (paper) card awaiting when we got into the room, simply to welcome us back to Kimpton (in general - we'd never previously stayed at this particular Kimpton before). Hand written, mind you! What a nice touch, I thought! I mean, we've been fans of the Kimpton brand for years, well before it was acquired by IHG, and to me, they've always excelled at hiring customer service staff. I mean, in this business, EVERYONE is a customer service representative, I suppose, but it's always impressed me how they can attract, hire, and retain such consistently excellent personnel. Our original experiences were mostly in the Midwest before we relocated to Arizona, and we were going through Sacramento as part of a trip to the redwoods and back home to AZ. The Sawyer, to me, was a shining example of that very quality we're talking about with great staff. LOVED the room, got a text shortly after arriving in the room asking if the room was to our liking (why, yes, very much, thank you) and offering service tips. Nicely done. They accommodated our higher floor request, the bed was super comfortable, plenty of desk space, and - get THIS - a set of cool little flexible bed reading lights (very thin and flexible, hardly noticeable but SO functional, built right into the headboards on both ends, really nice little detail to me). Really liked the view, and it's part of the downtown (DOCO) complex, with plenty of things to do (shop, dine). GREAT location, too, we easily walked to the capitol and parts west of there too (enjoyed Old Soul and Temple Coffee Roasters very much). Nice modern design, plenty of USB ports, so this was functional but fun. The bathroom was pleasant as well. I just don't see the need to stay anywhere else in Sacramento, and we will absolutely stay at the Sawyer next time we're anywhere near Sacramento. I'd even go so far as to say I'd consider going to Sacramento again BECAUSE of the Sawyer!

Yelp
Modern esthetic without being sterile. In fact, the room was super comfortable with a great view. Excellent bed and bedding. Sleek bathroom. Everything else was perfect during our stay. Calling the property the day before our arrival, the front desk person was very helpful. We sought her upon arrival (shout out to Alyssa!), and we felt taken care of. Alyssa was warm, hospitable, and authentic. In room service and amenities were consistent with the price point for the room. We'll be back. 100% recommended.

Yelp
It wouldn't let me check in, so here's a review! $37 overnight/valet parking... Felt safe with my car being in their possession. Breakfast was easy to order. Didn't realize breakfast had 20% auto gratuity... Oops. They catered our event really well! Everyone we met was kind. Pillows were a bit too soft, and I woke up with a headache/back/neck cramp... The bottles of water inside the room are $7/ea... Just a heads up. It was a good stay, but on my own dime, I probably wouldn't again. It was a nice little day getaway, a nice experience.

Yelp
My husband and I celebrated my birthday at the Kimpton Hotel in January. The ambiance was delightful, and our room, spacious. Unfortunately, our experience soured during interactions with housekeeping. I left my cherished birthday dress in the closet, only realizing it after returning home. Upon contacting the hotel, the housekeeping supervisor, Tanya Miles, displayed a disheartening lack of empathy. Her demeanor was rude and unprofessional, asserting that she meticulously checks all rooms and insinuating skepticism about my dress. Stating "no one would steal a dress." Despite my persistence, she offered no solutions. Less than 10 minutes after hanging up she called back admitting to finding the dress, yet there was no acknowledgment or apology for her earlier behavior. The hotel was pleasant overall, but the encounter with Tanya left a lingering disappointment.

Yelp
Very nice hotel! Is it 5 star quality? I give it a solid 4.89. Don't laugh, I be that way sometimes. It's a solid rating. The hotel is located Golden 1 Center, and the DOCO (Downtown Commons) shopping district. It is a solid 15 minute walk to Capital Park and restaurants along Lincoln Highway. If I recall correctly, there is a train that runs down the corridor through the DOCO district if you do not wish to walk. The hotel offers a complementary shuttle to/from the airport, you will need to hail a taxi or request an Uber/Lyft to venture into town. Overnight parking at the hotel is pretty steep at $35.00/nt. There is offsite parking for $18.00 at a nearby J street garage. The room has ample closet space, equipped with a safe but no robes or slippers were to be found. Not all rooms have a bathtub, mine had a spacious shower, while my colleague 4 rooms down had a shower and tub. If you are a bathtub person make sure that you ask if the room has a bathtub. I requested a room on the top floor, which provided a view of the freeway and several office buildings. The other side of the hotel looks out to Golden 1 Center and the DOCO area. Know the difference when you request. Upon my arrival, I turned the thermostat as high as it could go to warm up the room, however once it reached temperature it stopped working and never turned on again. This was fine for me since I tend to run cold but had I shared the room with my husband or a friend, the lack of cool air might have been an issue. In fact, the overhead vent cover at the room entrance was missing, so either this was a system recently installed or they were making changes to it. Either way it did not function as it should have. Overall, service is friendly, however, I ordered extra blankets around 9:30pm, but it took 50 minutes for them to be delivered. There were plenty of towels in the bathroom so I never needed an extra set during my 2-night stay. For the most part the room was clean, as hotels can be, though I did find a bit of dust around the bar/refrigerator area. The bed and pillows are plush and comfortable. The built in beside reading lights made late night scrolling, I mean reading easy. The hotel offers a sports bar, restaurant and bowling alley across several floors. On the 3rd floor are several conference rooms, halls, the gym and high-dining restaurant. The conference rooms are equipped with Meeting Owls, awesome tech I had not seen before. The Owl's are voice sensitive so the camera moves to show the person speaking on screen. Nice hotel, no major complaints. I would stay again.

Yelp
Wife and I made a Friday traffic-free train trip from SJC to SAC just before the New Year. From the station, a 10 minute walk to start our wonderful stay at KSH. The lobby was still holiday beautiful, as Cassie greeted and quickly checked us into a stunning room with view on an upper floor. That panorama balcony view is outstanding! We branched out from the KSH convenience of Golden 1 Center, to string several destination walks (of 5+ mins ea) throughout downtown & Old Town sites. We returned to the lobby for wine serving at 5:30, where we sat and talked while acoustic guitar music by David added to the atmosphere. We even met and spoke Ria, KSH Manager, as she welcomed (and poured wine for) fellow Friday evening guests. We'd invited our oldest daughter and her husband for later meet at the 3rd floor poolside "Revival," for cocktails and appetizers - another WOW great time, reviewed separately... Even from the Bay Area, we'll repeat this escape to the KSH in SAC...

Yelp
My steak, taste like charcoal, the mushrooms are burnt and cold, the potatoes are cold, the vegetables are disgusting, not to mention the macaroni and cheese. It's just an absolute joke.

Yelp
I was really excited to stay here. But I honestly probably would never stay here again. Our room was disgusting. The smell in the room was overwhelming and musty. We unfortunately weren't able to switch rooms the night we arrived. The carpet in our room looked as though it hadn't been cleaned since the hotel was built. It looked like someone bleed on the carpet and no effort was made to clean it. The staff at the hotel was super nice and apologetic. They comped our valet charges for the room issues. So that was nice and appreciative. But bottom line for the nightly rate the rooms should be immaculate and this hotels room just was not.

Yelp
I have an update on my previous stay at the Kimpton Sawyer. If you've had a problem that you were unable to resolve with the "manager" (mine was Savannah McKaid) don't give up. Through determination I was able to have IHG; the owners of Kimpton Hotels to step in and help me. They directed me to Nikki Carlson, the General Manager of the Kimpton Sawyer who was incredibly sympathetic to my problems and made everything right. Go to her with any issues and don't waste your time on anyone else!

Yelp
Whenever I see the words "dog friendly" hotel I get a bit skeptical. I know you claim you are dog friendly, but what about my 80lb untrained and rescue pitbull mastiff? The answer? A resounding yes. My wife and I went up to Sac this past weekend for our anniversary as we met up in Davis during college. We decided to bring our dog with us and the Sawyer provided everything we could ask for. First off, the service was 5 stars and the room was awesome. Second, the location could not be beat. The Golden 1 center and surrounding shopping area is right out the door and the capitol grounds are less than a 10 minute walk away. There are also patches of grass nearby if you had to relieve your dog. The room was solid and if you are an amex plat holder the benefits are pretty awesome. Add in a free cocktail hour and that about sums up 5 stars in my book. Cannot wait to be back!

Yelp
Stayed here for March Madness this past weekend and ended up extending our stay a day so we wouldn't have to drive back in the heavy rain. My wife noted several times how excellent their customer service was and how kind the employees were even in passing. We got breakfast through room service a couple days because it would be easier than going out to get breakfast when the games are right next door. One day the food was excellent, the other two days it was just okay. We regretted not going to grab food elsewhere. The room itself, wasn't any sort of mind blowing, not even exceptionally clean honestly, for what kind of prices we paid during the event, which was disappointing. The carpets were visibly soiled and need a deep clean. Toilet needed some TLC. The 5th floor itself smelled SO MUSTY and terrible my wife hated the smell and would bolt to our room. I did notice they set up a little diffuser on a table near the exit of the elevators, which did help that small area. Also, when we arrived they told us if we parked downstairs and didn't plan to move our car in and out much that it would be cheaper than valet. They told us it would be $40 for the whole time instead of $40 a day so we opted to self park. Then to leave our total was $140! I feel like that was a miscommunication or misunderstanding of the parking lot policy or something. But again, I would give this hotel 4 stars solely based on their excellent customer service, location, convenience, pet friendly. We loved that it was right next to a Starbucks which was nice to grab a coffee and walk our 14 year old pup around in the calm mornings.

Yelp
During my recent stay, a few issues arose that negatively impacted my experience at the Kimpton Sawyer. Firstly, upon arrival, I was dismayed to find that my double queen room was not available when I checked in at 4 pm with my family of 4. I called the Kimpton a few days before my stay to confirm that the room was indeed booked and available and was assured that the room was booked and available. However, at 4 pm which is the advertised check in time on their website, I was told by Alyssa, the front desk staff that the room was not available and that an estimated time for the room being ready could not be provided. As a frequent traveler, I have never encountered this type of experience where no accommodations, alternatives, or estimated wait times, were provided if my room was not ready at time of check-in. I was traveling with two young children and also needed a room to get ready for a medical conference I was supposed to attend at 6 pm. I had to practically beg Alyssa and her manager to give me a temporary room so that we could have a place to rest and so that I could get ready for my conference. They made me feel like I was being a nuisance, even though this was clearly not my fault. When we got to the temporary room, there was a pervasive odor of urine in the bathroom and it turned out that the bathroom had not been cleaned and there were urine stains on the floor next to the toilet. Obviously we did not feel comfortable using this room and yet did not have any other alternative than to hang out in the lobby for an indefinite amount of time. After two hours and I hadn't received a text about an update to the room and no one was answering the texts or phone at the front desk, I again went back to the front desk to receive an update. This is despite being already late to my conference as I was trying to secure a room for my family. I was told again by Alyssa that they still had no updated time for the double room to be available and was again made to feel by her and everyone else at the front desk including her manager on duty, that I was being unreasonable and a nuisance. I was told by Alyssa that since I booked on a third party platform, they were under no obligation to secure a double room for me and that I could go elsewhere to find other accommodations. I was told it would not be possible for the Kimpton to provide me two king beds in two separate rooms and that I would have to pay for an extra room if I wanted two beds. Finally, after some searching on her part, she was able to find a one bedroom suite with a sofa bed. At that point, I was exhausted from traveling, negotiating with evasive staff members, and dealing with two young children who needed some resolution as to where they would be sleeping for the night, so I agreed to the room. Again, I walked away feeling like a nuisance and that I was being unreasonable. The pull out sofa bed was uncomfortable and was in no way a replacement for the queen bed I had booked, yet somehow, I was supposed to be grateful for this "upgrade". I will never ever again stay at the Kimpton Sawyer for any event in Sacramento, nor will I endorse staying there to any of my personal or professional friends. As if staying in an unhygienic room with a pervasive urine odor and a lumpy pull out sofa weren't bad enough, I was made to feel during my entire stay that I was being unreasonable and a nuisance through no fault of my own. There are many other alternative hotels in the area, and I would advise anyone considering staying in Sacramento to find other accommodations as you will be treated like a third class citizen if you stay here. Please read other reviews that mention being treated in a substandard manner by the front staff and also the uncleanliness of the rooms, including urine stains. I'm not the only one who has brought these issues to their attention and it's clear they haven't put in the effort to change their practices.
