East Nashville Is the Hottest Neighborhood In the Hot-Chicken City | Bon Appétit

"The running joke for the past decade is that thousands of barns gave their lives to supply the amount of reclaimed barnwood decorating the city’s institutions. So it was with a healthy amount of skepticism that I approachedPelican & Pig, a Southern-ish restaurant with, yes, a bar wrapped in wood. I should have been more trusting since (a) those are new pine boards and (b) it’s from Nick and Audra Guidry, the husband-and-wife duo behind the excellentSlow Hand Coffee + Bakeshopnext door. Here they give Southern staples a twist, smoking short ribs and layering them with a Sichuan-spiked soubise and making pillowy gnocchi out of biscuit dough to slide under braised rabbit." - BySTEVE CAVENDISH

During a recent visit to Houston to see family, they took me to a truly remarkable bookstore. It's Black-owned and filled with an incredible selection of books by Black authors — simply amazing. Even before I learned more about the store’s mission, I was immediately struck by the welcoming, peaceful atmosphere. The space was clear, warm, and inviting. The staff were kind, engaged, and hard at work organizing inventory, while mellow music set the perfect tone. The scent in the air was comforting, and fellow customers wandered, browsed, and read quietly — it was genuinely a vibe. I could’ve easily stayed for hours. We took our time exploring, had great conversations, and marveled at the variety of thoughtful, beautiful items available. Thank you for blessing the community with such an inspiring and well-curated space. What a gem!

I came back to this bookstore after two years and it’s so beautiful to see the growth this bookstore has gone through. Such love and care from the owners and workers in what they’re doing for the community from events to books to the free library, you will definitely appreciate this gem in Houston please come check out their store and support when you can. I love the various selections on Black authors and that they have other Black owned products like puzzles, gift wrap, gift cards, candles, Croc accessories and so much more. There’s something for everyone here 😉💗 🐑♥️Jesus loves you and He is proud of who you choose to be sugar 💜✝️

This place is an entire VIBE!! I loved the atmosphere to the welcoming to the selection of books. I’ve been wanting to come in here for a while and today was the perfect day. We got a tour of the bookstore and everyone was so helpful. I had a list of books that I was looking for and was able to grab 3. However they will order any books and ship or pick up. 😌😌 Will definitely be coming back. Side note…bought a puzzle as well 😍

Small but mighty book store! They had some popular titles, but also had exciting titles I had never seen before. I was so excited to take my friends here last weekend as part of a mindfulness day. A friend and I got copies of "Hood Feminism" to buddy read and she also found a new thriller to get into. I also found some stickers and affirmation cards to use as gifts! My friend, who is in a doctoral program, was able to find a rare title in physical format for his research! Another friend was able to find a vegetarian cookbook and already made a delicious Ethiopian Red Lentil Stew💕 We all were able to walk out with books that excited us as we headed to Emancipation Park to read. Everyone working was so nice and happy to help💕 It was great to chat with them about their book recommendations and connections to some of the titles we were buying. I also saw they have a host of events and even a book club! I can't wait to go back!
