Portland’s Best Gluten-Free Restaurants, Food Carts, and Bakeries | Eater Portland

"Portland’s newest all-gluten-free bakery began its life in Fukushima, Japan, in 2010. Four years later, owner Hiro Saito brought his rice flour-based pastries and breads to Redondo Beach in Los Angeles County. Now, he expanded the brand to Portland, after noticing an uptick in online orders from the region. The all-day menu includes sandwiches, bowls, salads, and smoothies; a bakery side will operate for customers looking to buy whole loaves, rolls, and more. For those dining in, expect tall slabs of gluten-free toast slathered with jam and ricotta, panini-style pressed sandwiches, and veggie bowls packed with quinoa and greens." - Sararosa Davies

The Best New Restaurants and Food Carts in Portland, March 2025

"Portland’s newest all-gluten-free bakery began its lifetime in Fukushima, Japan in 2010. California Gluten-Free Bakery Kirari West Is Expanding to Portland This Fall | Eater Portland

"Opening in mid-to-late October at 1668 NW 23rd Avenue in the former Boxer Ramen space, I’m excited that one of Southern California’s best gluten-free bakeries is bringing its supple wheat-free breads and daytime cafe fare to Portland. Owner Hiro Saito—who debuted Kirari West in Redondo Beach in 2014 after his family opened Kirari in Fukushima in 2010—plans to operate the Portland spot as a bakery, cafe, and smoothie bar with an all-day menu of sandwiches, bowls, smoothies, and more (it will not offer cake for the foreseeable future). Breakfast will include items like brioche toast with ricotta and jam and overnight French toast with Oregon berries, while lunch skews savory with quinoa bowls, paninis on homemade bread, and seasonal salads. The star, though, is the standalone loaves and stacked pastry cabinet: brioche loaf, house loaf, rustic boule, muffins, cinnamon brioche, almond brioche, and scones. Smoothies include the Berry Nice (strawberries and blueberries) and the Grass is Greener (kale, spinach, and banana). Saito selected Portland after seeing an uptick in online sales and is partnering with Ramen Ryoma owner Yoshinari Ichise and manager Soichiro Kato to lease a larger space; though he isn’t gluten-free himself, he’s spent the last decade perfecting wheat-free baking using a flour blend made mostly from rice flour and aims to surprise people so they say, “Wow, is this really gluten-free?”" - Rebecca Roland

Google
My favorite bakery!! I’m genuinely shocked that it’s gluten free, I really couldn’t tell! I’ve been here multiple times already and they are very consistently amazing! Obsessed with the cinnamon brioche roll, the tuna avocado melt, and their soups are always really great! It all tastes fresh and homemade. Everyone is very nice and the ambience is comforting!

Google
Amazing gluten-free food and baked goods. The Avocado Toast and the Avocado Tuna Sandwich were both super delicious. Love the sweet pastries too. Friendly service and nice space. Love it!

Google
This is a cute place where we stopped by to grab some lunch. Food is simple and feels fresh. We tried a quinoa bowl and the cilantro lime chicken panini . Didn’t realize the bread was gluten free and I certainly my could not tell. Didn’t try the baked goods but will definitely it next time.

Google
Good golly, Miss Molly is their creamy miso soup delicious! The roasted corn, the chicken, and it's so full of that umami flavor. I've been here a few times now, and everything is so well done. The service is always very friendly too. I will be coming back again and again!

Google
Great service and probably the best Gluten Free bread in the area (especially their sliced bread for sandwiches). They also have good juices, smoothies and even an açaí bowl on the menu for options on the lighter side.

Google
Sandwiches are yummy, the soup is excellent, and the salads are delicious and just the right size to have with your sandwich. Service was friendly and efficient. A great place for a good gluten-free and dairy free lunch!

Google
The wife and I came in for gf cinnamon rolls, we were not disappointed. Texture was excellent and the cream cheese frosting did not miss! Nailing cinnamon rolls is tricky in general but especially gf, highly recommend.

Google
Immaculate bowls for vegetarian souls! They could use some attention to the atmospherics here though as the interior felt very generic and the music made me wish there was outdoor seating. Food this good should have a space with a vibe to match is all I’m saying!

Yelp
I stopped here with my gluten free friend for lunch today and it was absolutely fantastic. I'm not GF but I could barely tell that my bread was gluten free. I got the brioche French toast with the berry smoothie and they were both SO GOOD. The little bit of honey in the smoothie really made it so much better and the ricotta on the French toast was to die for. My friend got the overnight French toast and can't stop raving about how delicious it was. Everything was so fresh and delicious. The people working here are all so friendly and the vibes are absolutely immaculate. This place is so cozy and chill and I can absolutely see myself spending a day working from this little cafe. If you are on the fence, go! It is so worth it!

Yelp
Gluten free review: Yes, yes and double yes! If you are gluten-free, I do suggest definitely stopping in. You don't even have to be close. I suggest you hop on your rides and head over. This is delectable! I got the Turkey Avocado panini with a side of mushroom soup (I believe that's what the soup's name was). The sandwich is definitely a five out of five. I love the fresh cilantro with the pickled onion was absolutely delicious. The bread is soft and delicious. The combo is superb. The soup was OK. I gave the soup maybe three out of five. Maybe it was just my taste. I would still suggest you get the whole thing though. And if you think I'm going to pass up some delightful sweet treats you are kidding yourself! I got the cinnamon roll and the Almond Brioche. The cinnamon roll was so soft! I know what you're thinking... "gluten free soft?" Yes! My favorite part.. the taste was delicious. The frosting was a cream cheese tasting delight but not overly sweet. This was my favorite out of the two. The Almond Brioche was juts as soft and yummy. It had a good almond flavor. The service was nice and helpful. She helped me know if there was a specific spice in a sauce that I cannot eat. The drink I got was a Matcha with strawberry. I didn't really taste the strawberry but the Matcha was refreshing. I also got a fresh squeezed juice, which was a five out of five. Everything was so fresh. The inside was hip, fun, and relaxing. This place has some good energy. I will definitely be going back.

Yelp
5 stars on food! I've eaten overnight French toast, avocado toast (which usually isn't my thing), scones and the almond brioche. All super yummy 3 stars for the drinks which I will probably skip in future. My iced chai was watered down. My daughter strawberry matcha had matcha at the bottom and you couldn't taste the strawberry at all. Different staff take care of different parts of the food/bev so you left food will come out at different times. Which is fine if you get your drinks first rather than 15 minutes into eating. Bright, clean.

Yelp
Today was my first time stopping in, and I'm so glad I did. The gluten free cinnamon brioche was DELICIOUS and super nostalgic. I recommend heating it up before consuming. The cashier was knowledgeable, and the price was reasonable. The ambiance is laid back- you order at the counter. I'm excited to go back and try more menu items!

Yelp
We recently tried Kirari for breakfast. The amazon violet smoothie was delicious!! The Oregon sunrise was good too but very strong ginger taste. I do wish there were some options for protein with the smoothies. We also tried the almond brioche, it had a delicious almond flavor but was a little too spongey for what I was expecting. The ambiance is very cute and service was quick and easy. I would like to come back to try the toasts and lunch bowls- they looked really good!

Yelp
Ok sorry but had to change my review after I saw the ingredients of bread and I assume the same thing is for the pastries if not worse. Ugh I wish they used better ingredients and at least some were organic? Vegetable oils? So disappointing! Used to go there multiple times a week but now seems like the ingredients are very unhealthy. In my opinion gluten free should also mean anti inflammatory and healthy. Please do better!

Yelp
For gluten free pastry, the gluten free bun was amazing and the best I've tried! The blueberry muffins are good but on a drier side (I've tried it multiple times). The almond croissant was too moist for me and had weird texture for the almond croissant... I'd love to come there more often but the options are always the same - I've been there 10 times and each time there were the same 5 types of pastries. Waiting for more!!

Yelp
My partner has celiac and it's hard to find places safe for her to eat. This place is 100% safe and 100% delicious. We always take a loaf of bread home with us - it's so good. Everything from the drinks, pastries and sandwiches are all fantastic. This spot has become a quick favorite of ours. So happy they came to the neighborhood!

Yelp
Delicious gluten free breads. I enjoyed the ricotta fruit toasts and a vanilla rooibos oat milk latte; my friend enjoyed a vegan bowl and smoothie. Everything is well labeled in case you have overlapping allergies. And they sell pre-sliced breads to go. I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
For gluten free, this was such a nice treat. Food was good, the interior was clean and simple, and great customer service. Prices definitely reflect gluten free food, so heads up it will not be a cheap lunch.

Yelp
Avocado toast was delish, great portion size, so price is worth it. Blueberry muffin wasn't too sweet which is typical for GF bake goods, so it was excellent. Nice setting inside, service was adequate.

Yelp
This place is just as delicious as the Flagship store in Redondo Beach, CA. The Portland store has a variety of delicious fare from smoothies to quinoa bowls to freshly baked bread. I am not gluten-free and find everything tastes so good...nothing like the gluten-free foods I've had in the past. The staff members were also really friendly and helpful even though there was a long line when I was there. I will be back for sure!

Yelp
We loved our experience at Kirari West. Both my partner and I are gluten free and were excited to see this new restaurant in our neighborhood. We got the cinnamon bun, avocado toast and the turkey avocado melt. Everything was delicious. Their bread tasted like regular bread and the cinnamon bun was very light and fluffy. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
Great food and ambiance. Kirari West is a Gluten free dedicated restaurant. Their concept is eating healthy.

Yelp
Tried the soup of the day Minestrone. Broth was tasty but no substance a few beans tasteless on the bottom crunchy crouton bits interesting but didn't work . NO vegetables not a traditional recipe so I'll pass next time . Happy they're in neighborhood so I look forward to ordering a pastry. Or sandwich next visit !

Bruce M.

Yelp
What an amazing place for gluten free, celiac safe food along with nut and soy free and vegan options. I don't have a gluten allergy but several in my family do. The "Overnight French Toast with Organic Oregon Berries" was outstanding. Would not know it was gluten free if I wasn't told.

Melissa B.

Yelp
Turkey avocado panini is solid. Great gf bread. Loved the cinnamon bun too. Will go back and try more. Very good service. Clean. They have gf dog treats too. My dog approved.
