Best Bagels in Philadelphia | Eater Philly

"Just across from Washington Square, Knead bakes some of Philly’s most fun bagel varieties, like togarashi or cardamom. Layer the bagels with specialty spreads like roasted beet cream cheese or go for a bagel sandwich with sausage, egg, and cheese." - Ernest Owens

The 12 Best Bagels In Philly

"If you’re a person who gets excited about bagels beyond the standard sesame, cinnamon raisin, or everything, head to Knead Bagels in Old City. Here you’ll find flavors like togarashi, za’atar, and fennel seed and sea salt, to name a few. These bagels are simple, super doughy and dense, and we especially love them with their house-made scallion lime cream cheese, pineapple and sumac jam, or in a fluffy bacon, egg, and cheese bagel sandwich." - candis mclean, alison kessler

Google
Bagels were good, not excellent, denser than the bagels I like and smaller than most. I do appreciate some varieties that are unique, and the staff was very nice with recommendations. However the price was just expensive for what we got. I ordered a bacon egg cheese sandwich and a egg cheese soychorizo which for 2 sandwiches cost over $25 before tip.

Google
Cozy place to enjoy fresh bagels and bagel sandwiches. Bagels are so tender so it wasn’t really big deal to have one bite of hot sandwiches-which usually matters to me.

Google
This is my favorite bagel place in Philadelphia and I always stop here while I’m in the area . The bagels are creative and I always like trying their specials .

Google
It's bagels... nothing special. It definitely wasn't bad at all, they were good but average. Hence the average rating. The employees weren't very happy and appeared to be depressed. Their interactions with people really drove home the depressed vibe. Really odd. But the bagels were bagels, if you like bagels and this place is close, come get em! If its out of the way, youre not missing anything here at all.

Google
I absolutely love Knead and get bagels from here often for lunch. My pictures don’t do these bagels justice. My go to order is the knead old bay chicken salad sandwich. One of the best chicken salads I have ever had. They have a great lunch special menu option as well. Love this place and would recommend it to anyone.

Google
If you need a delicious bagel and some coffee if your life, you’re heading in the right director by stopping here. The staff is super friendly and helpful with suggestions. Service is very quick, so you’re able to easily get in and get out. I chose their basic bagel sandwich and added bacon. I appreciated that they chopped the bacon on the sandwich instead of keeping it in a slice. Definitely get the sandwich with their house aioli on it. It’s like icing on the cake… if this was cake. A great stop for anyone in Philly or visiting like we were. *side note* they offer huge crunchy dill pickles 10/10. Yes, I ate a pickle with my sandwich and coffee.

Google
The everything bagel with egg and sausage hit the spot, the coffee was perfect and the orange juice was soul-reviving. Grab some breakfast at Knead before visiting Independence Hall just down the block. Really great service, and excellent atmosphere. Highly recommend!

Yelp
This place has limited hours and is closed Sunday and you can tell why, the food is AMAZING!! Every time I go here for lunch I am so happy with the service, the freshness of the food and the different items that they offer. They have different kinds of bagels that I've never heard of, their whitefish salad is probably the best In the city. They have dine in , takeout and outdoor seating. it's always a very relaxed vibe in here in the music is great. The staff is excellent as well very personable. Highly recommend if you can get here in time!!

Yelp
Right down Walnut Street from my medical appointment, Knead Bagels filled my need for a late morning nosh after good news from my doc. The deep narrow rounder house was not yet in lunch mode, so I was able to order, pay and wait for construction of a Guajillo Chili Bagel w Roasted Veggie Cream Cheese, and slide out the door before the tidal wave of lunch rush. Service was fine and dandy and I had bag in hand for departure in under five minutes. The bagel itself had a subtle chili flavor that succeeded through understatement. The cream cheese had a red tint from the use of red bell pepper in the soft mix. The texture may have been more dense than I prefer due to over-kneading, but the shop's name implied this might be the case. Won't hold that against them, but I do imagine how it would have been stellar had there been air pockets throughout to allow the baked dough to be more airy. Still, a very good bagel in a tiny hole in the wall that gives old center city such charm.

Yelp
Location is great! Right off Washington Square! I was a bit disappointed with the lack of salmon my sandwich had. Felt a bit silly. Bagel was good in the end and it was nice to sit inside for a bit. Everyone was nice and kind. Coffee looks delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
Pretty good bagels for a bagel shop in Philly. I'm used to bagels in Manhattan. It wasn't a Manhattan bagel but it was still good. I would definitely come back for their specials. I just wish they had more bagel options here.

Yelp
Special: Salt & Pepper Bagel w. Maple Rosemary CC; 1/2 dozen bagels sliced with freezer bag: 3 ZaAtar, 3 Tograshi, half pint of horseradish dill hummus and sandwich Awesome service: Madison and Ashley Comfortable and chill
google avatar

Brendan U.

Yelp
I love the name. Stopped by to grab coffee and a breakfast sandwich. Ordered the lox on Togarashi with scallion lime spread. I enjoyed all ingredients. I might try ordering the bagels by themselves next time to get a better taste of them. Service was quick and timely. There are a few tables inside, and some outside. Nice morning stop in Washington square.

Yelp
FOOD We ordered a BLT on everything and and egg/cheese/sausage on everything. They were absolutely delicious despite a couple downsides. The bacon on the BLT had a jerky-like consistency and wasn't oily, which I loved, and the sausage reminded me of Vietnamese marinated pork than the typical American sausage. They were flavorful and intense. The cheese was also melted nicely with the egg. My caveat is that the seasoning on the everything bagel easily dusts off, so there's not much left on it when you bite into it. I ended up dusting some on with each bite instead. The other downside is that there isn't much bacon on the BLT, and the prices are on the higher side. ($8+ for a BLT!!!) SERVICE Service is quick, and the staff are friendly. AMBIANCE Ample seating is available inside with a couple tables outside as well. It can get crowded quite easily, so it's more of a grab-and-go place since Washington Square Park is nearby. PARKING Paid street parking is available at a limited capacity. Parking garages are also nearby due to its close location to Penn and Jefferson health systems.

Yelp
Generally, I liked my experience here. Ambiance: (5/5) there is enough seating for a few people. It is close to the hospital so it is convenient for a lot of people. Price: (4/5) Normal prices are average, but lunch prices are really good. $12 for a bagel sandwich, side and drink. OJ is a slight up charge but it was worth it. Food: (4/5) Bagels are really good for the area, but are not the same as NJ or NY of course. I got the Bahn Mi and it had a great sauce that gave it that Asian twist. The cucumber salad was a great side. It has dill, vinegar, and onions and I would highly recommend. Service: (5/5) Food comes our quick and staff is very nice. In conclusion, I would come here again!

Yelp
Had to drop into a Bagel specialty shop in Philly! Tried their special Strawberry shortcake + strawberry cream cheese combo. Bagel was unique and fresh, soft but chewy. And the cream cheese was light and tasty. I will absolutely drop by again if I come back to Philly.

Yelp
I love this bagel shop! I'm an avid bagel eater (bring me the carbs idc!) and this place always gets it right. The bagels are slightly crisp on the outside and taste straight out the oven with a soft slightly chewy interior. I never get them toasted they're just right without tasting stale. True bagel. The breakfast sandwiches are exceptional due to the Garlic Alioli they use on them. A good BEC can't be dry so I usually add ketchup to mine but this aioli beats ketchup for me any day! They also use good ol' cooper sharp american cheese so you know I like to get extra and make is super cooper sharp cheesy like many Philadelphians likes their cheesesteaks. The service is always friendly and I've been coming for about 3 years and have seen staff changes but always remain welcoming. Definitely a bagel spot to check out. 10/10!
google avatar

Yelp
If you are reading this just stop and go get some food! It's all good. I have my favorite but am always tempted by the specials. I mean 2 bagels is good right? And the sandwiches are so good. The service is amazing. I truly love this place and will go out of my way to grab a bagel.
google avatar

Stephanie R.

Yelp
My favorite bagel spot in Philly! Unique options for bagels and spreads, plus the classics if you're not feeling adventurous. I LOVE the old bay chicken salad (with potato chips in it)! Knead had the nicest staff around and orders move pretty quickly. I usually order ahead to stop by for a pickup, but there is indoor and outdoor seating available. Pair your bagel with their freshly squeezed orange juice!
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
Had a bagel breakfast sandwich w egg, cheese, and sausage on an everything bagel. All good, the sausage was a bit spicy, but not too! Nice small place run very efficiently!
google avatar

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
Knead has such unique bagel and spread flavors! I loved the everything bagel with the lemon cream cheese. The balance of sweet lemon cream cheese with the everything bagel was delicious. Pickup was quick and easy.
google avatar

Yelp
Loved stumbling into Knead on a Sunday. We didn't realize they closed at 1 but we're grateful they still took our order 5 mins before close. We were excited to try the Super food bagel and the tograshi and wow! The flavor combo of the tograshi with the long hot cream cheese is delicious enough to definitely become a frequent flyer here. My husband and I agreed that next time we need to come when they open because the texture of the bagel was a bit tougher. We can imagine just how yummy these would be fresh out of the oven.

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
Yummy bagels , on the thinner less plump side but chewy nonetheless. Very creative spreads and menu items. Would not recommend getting the black sesame seed bagel though, tasted like dirt!
google avatar

Robert W.

Yelp
Best Bagels in Philly by far. Light but crunchy. Nice employees.makes Sunday morning special.
google avatar

Vince R.

Yelp
My coffee was hot and tasty. My salt and pepper bagel was crisp outside and soft and warm inside. Outstanding! Staff was friendly and fast. We picked a real winner today. I will be back!

Sarah L.

Yelp
Ordered a bacon egg and cheese on a flax bagel, no aioli. It was standard, didn't blow me away. Lacked flavor, service was great, and it came out quick. I'd try somewhere else before going here again
google avatar

Marissa W.

Yelp
Great bagels great hummus nice staff and it's super fast as well will return whenever in area
google avatar

Nia O.

Yelp
The customer service is excellent here! The employees are always very genuine and kind. The price point is also very reasonable compared to some other bagel spots I've seen and these bagels are always deliciously chewy and fresh! Overall really great place to enjoy your bagel inside or out (they have outdoor seating). It's my favorite bagel place in this city! I'll be here once a week! Lol
google avatar

Jess P.

Yelp
Here from out of town and saw a line and smelled the food all the way up the block so we gave it a try and they did not disappoint! 10/10 all the way from Florida! The vibes are perfect coffee shop vibes!
google avatar

Christopher S.

Yelp
Knead Bagels had slipped under my radar due to the unassuming exterior and somewhat hidden location off of Washington Square. Do not make the mistake I made - go to this place asap. Service was quick and friendly, the food was really good (esp. the pickled tomato add-on), and the prices were reasonable. 5/5 recommend!
google avatar

Aimy T.

Yelp
Finally made it to the store. I've had Knead before when people are kind enough to haul a platter of bagels to the hospital breakroom but looking at the menu there were so many options I didn't know what to get! A Togarashi bagel and long hot cream cheese? The onion bagel and spinach cream cheese special? I ended up with the fennel bagel with roasted veggie cream cheese. I didn't see it today but the peanut butter oat spread is Try it if you see it!
google avatar

Irene M.

Yelp
Holy moly...this place is amazing. I'm not even a bagel person but I love breakfast sandwiches, and stopped in for an egg and cheese bagel with avocado. I got it with a za'atar bagel and it was incredible...the flavor was unlike any other bagel I've had and I'm still thinking about it. The aioli they use in the breakfast sandwiches is also very tasty. The sales associate was so nice and friendly! I am excited to return when it's nicer so I can grab a bagel and eat in the park. New fave bagel place in the city
google avatar

LA R.

Yelp
Great bagels -- fennel os my fave but they often run out by the time I'm there. They are a breakfast and early lunch place closing at 2pm. A might early for my schedule so I'm so glad when I can make it in time and get a breakfast sandwich and extra bagels to go. So delicious. Very near Pennsylvania Hospital, Independence Hall, and Walnut Street Theatre for pre-matinee nosh. It's small but has a few small tables and, I believe, some counter seating.
google avatar

Benjamin J.

Yelp
Their service is out of this world even though they are super busy. All of their staff is personable and friendly. They have very unique donuts and cream cheeses. Had a Zaatar bagel with lemon herb cream cheese
google avatar

Shauna R.

Yelp
Friendly, fast, and convenient. Was able to order online and pick up within 10 mins. Stopped in for breakfast today. As soon as I saw their special for the week, I just had to do it! Garlic bagel with fajita cream cheese! I mean, yummmm! The pictures speak for themselves
google avatar

Amber W.

Yelp
I was disappointed that they did not toast my bagels. I ordered a bagel with cream cheese and one with butter toasted. They said they don't recommend toasting, I asked them to toast anyway. They did not toast either of them. I feel like a bagel has to be toasted for me, feels unfinished without a toast and for the price I was disappointed. I recommend The Bagel place instead.
google avatar

Jeff D.

Yelp
Cleaver name. Pretty good bagels. I'm somewhat biased since I at one time lived in North Jersey and had simply the best bagels within walking distance...but I digress. Their online ordering is simple and easy. Place it and it's ready in no time at all. You can't enter but there is someone at the front that will get your order for you. Washington Square Park is right across the street. On a nice day, it's perfect to sit here and enjoy a bagel...even though I can enjoy a good bagel anywhere. My Togarashi w/lime scallion cream cheese was a unique combo. The bagel is a good size - not too big, not too doughy, but tasty enough. I wasn't sure about the scallion/lime combo but it works well. And they are generous with that cream. Definitely different than the Jersey bagels I am used to but I liked it. I'll leave the cheesesteaks to you Philly, just leave the bagels to Jersey ;)
google avatar

Leon J.

Yelp
New York bagels? Who kneads them? These are the best bagels I've ever tasted anywhere )especially when they're just out of the oven) and the staff is wonderful and friendly. If you're into it, the vegan cream cheese is delicious and the sándwiches are great.
google avatar

Shannon C.

Yelp
I can't believe I don't have more pictures of bagels here but I guess I eat them too fast. I love their bagels and I make my fiancé buy the specials sometimes and freeze them so I can try them when I'm here (have some of the guajillo chile ones right now). This is a must stop when I'm visiting Philly. I love egg and cheese sandwiches and these are AMAZING, the BEST. I can't ever try the other things on the menu because I'm only in Philly so often and I have to have the egg and cheese. Also, the veggie/vegan chorizo is EVERYTHING. I love it so much. And the folks here at Knead Bagels are the best, the nicest! Knead Bagels, I love you.
google avatar

Jennifer N.

Yelp
I love this place for a quick breakfast! The bagels are amazing! I usually order the egg, cheese, turkey bacon and knead aioli on an everything bagel. Cheese is melted to perfection and the bagel has a decent flavor. Only complaint is that their turkey bacon is on the saltier side.
google avatar

Robert Z.

Yelp
Ok so I only recently started eating bagels as I always thought they were terrible donuts. Yes, I know, I was woefully wrong and I will be the first to admit it. Places like Knead Bagels are what's really turning me over to the bagel scene. Bagel's aren't a bad donut but a bread alternative! Anyway, I came here for a quick bite and they had such an interesting array of bagels. What caught my eye was their bagel of the day which happened to be a lavender bagel with lavender honey cream cheese spread. I have such a soft spot for lavender flavored things that I knew I had to try it. I have to admit, it took me a while to eat it so I didn't have it fresh and hot. Even then, it was an amazing bagel and the flavors worked surprisingly well. The lavender was light but added a nice floral hint to the bagel and to me was a great addition to the dense, slightly salted bagel. The spread was amazing as well, honey and lavender just work so well together and of course on this bagel only made things better. It wasn't overly sweet and the bit of salt enhanced the flavors all around. If you're in the Philly area definitely check this place out for a quick bite or a quiet place to set up and study!
google avatar

Cierra F.

Yelp
Amazing! In Philly visiting, and man do I wish we had this place in Houston. This is by far the best bagel sandwich I've had. I ordered the Superfood bagel, with Turkey bacon, egg, and green tomato. It came with an aioli sauce, which I got on the side since I'm funny about sauces. The aioli was fantastic! The unsweetened tea was great too, it had a hint of passion fruit. The staff had awesome customer service. I absolutely love this place. Should I come back to Philly, Knead Bagels is on the list.
google avatar

Sruti T.

Yelp
I love coming to Knead, grabbing a bagel and heading to Washington square park. I would rate higher but the bagel itself is sub par. They're small and dense without the fluffy inside you hope for. BUT do come for the unique flavors. The togarashi bagel is unlike other bagels and really flavorful. Their cream cheeses especially the scallion and long hot are incredible and worth a try. The people who work here are also lovely.

Yelp
Tucked away between two seemingly mundane buildings, Knead Bagels is one of the best bagel spots in town! We came here not knowing what to expect and left with our stomachs jumping for joy. The bagels are DELICIOUS here, although slightly pricey for a bagel. I got the special (ham, egg, and cheese with a vinegar slaw) and my girlfriend got the kale, gouda, and egg with pork sausage. While the bill for the two sandwiches came out to around $20 in total, it was well worth it. Her sandwich was a perfect savory blend with the melted gouda really adding so much flavor. My sandwich was very refreshing and delicious - we downed them both so quickly! Many people came for bagels to go, and service is relatively fast (we waited maybe 10 min because ours were hot sandwiches - most people waited just a few for bagels with spreads). They also serve a variety of drinks and other sandwiches, but I would definitely come back to have more of the bagel sandwiches next time I'm in the area!
google avatar

Lauren W.

Yelp
What a find! My husband and I stumbled across this place while walking to the Liberty Bell. We hadn't had much luck with random restaurant selection the day before so we picked Knead because their was a line of locals outside and we assumed it would be a good choice. We assumed right! The service was friendly and helpful to first timers. No dine in but they walk your food outside to you when it's ready, and it comes out fresh and hot. The aioli was to die for!!! The food was as delicious as the photos... no not staged it truly looked this amazing! Would definitely be back.
google avatar

Neil M.

Yelp
I live a stone throw away from this place and it felt criminal that I hadn't tried Knead Bagels yet. Was super excited and came in on a rare weekday morning when I wasn't at work. I tried the much recommended Togarashi Bagel with Scallion Lime cream cheese but didn't get it heated, which is something I generally prefer. Can't say I was super impressed though - the cream cheese was extremely lime-y and the bagel was nothing extraordinary. Given the extraordinary reviews, I'll probably be giving this place another shot (and definitely toasting my bagel). For now, 3.5 stars.
google avatar

Carmela A.

Yelp
Best bagels not on a food truck I've ever had! Ordered a classic egg and sausage plain for myself with and a black sesame Reuben corned beef for my partner! Did not regret the amazing taste nor how quick the service was. Careful for you late night munchie kings and queens though--only open until 1:30pm most days!
google avatar

Logan H.

Yelp
Fantastic bagels, fantastic service. Person at the register suggested a bagel for me that was incredible. All in on this place.
google avatar

Chris W.

Yelp
Stopped by on a busy Saturday and MAN was this place on top of things. Great bagel sandwich. Great cold brew, but the team was what put it over the edge. They were just SO perceptive and aware and made the rush feel like nothing. Doesn't matter how busy it gets. Knead rocks
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
It's a wonderful place, clean, inviting and friendly staff. My word of advice, don't make bagels artisanal. Their bagel with lox, was only ok. Everything bagel with cream cheese, taste odd. Again, if you like to try something a bit different. I wouldn't say no. Just not my bagel place.

Karen A.

Yelp
They have some unique healthy bagels that are delicious. I also like the cream cheese of the day.

Alexis M.

Yelp
Excellent customer service! Stopped in for a quick lunch. Fresh bagel, lox and cream cheese and delicious muffins.
google avatar

Jen P.

Yelp
Got a chicken salad sandwich on a plain bagel. It is seasoned with old bay and the sandwich has chips already on it.. it's amazing. Love the close proximity to the park so you can eat lunch outside. Staff was super friendly. Food was done very quickly too. Would return!
google avatar

Haru S.

Yelp
Every time I visit friends in center city, I never leave without dropping by this bagel shop at least once. Their ingredients are always so fresh and delicious! And the people who work their are always so cordial no matter how busy it gets. 90% of the time, I end up with my favorite lox bagel. I love the lavender one but it sells out pretty fast. However, the togarashi bagel comes as a close second. It adds a little spice to the palette. I tried the new strawberry balsamic cc spread today and loved it. Sweet and tart, it balances out the lox. When I'm feeling generous with my wallet, I like add avocado to my bagel. Digging into my order always brings a smile to my face, and sinking my teeth into my bagel is like having an epiphany. Can't have a bad day after stopping by. For those who have never been here but love bagels, drop by before 2pm! There are so many ways to customize your order, and no matter what you get, their combos are so worth it.
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
We found this place while staying in Philadelphia. Was a great little place! Super friendly and helpful staff. The beverages were given immediately upon order. The bagel sandwiches were absolutely delicious and had great flavor and freshness! This is a must if you're a bagel person!
google avatar

David K.

Yelp
$10 for a half dozen scrawny ones. I won't call them bagels, they don't look like bagels. The good, the outside has a nice crisp shell but there is no soft inside doughy goodness that a bagel should have. The bagel hole was bigger than the bagel so there is no room for my favorite topping, diced tomato. One and done for me.
