A Wasatch foothill standby where chef‑owner Mike Fukumitsu’s crew serves a broad sushi menu alongside standout ramen. The Salt Lake Tribune has spotlighted Kobe’s dedication; Gastronomic SLC includes it among the valley’s go‑tos.

This place was awesome experience for sushi. Especially if you are sitting at the bar. We had shrimp tempura, sushi hotategai, sushi unagi, chef special roll. Gotta have sake Sho chiku bai hot. Other food looks good too. Also you can bring the whole family. Also this place gets packed very quickly.

Excellent appetizers, sushi rolls, and Japanese entrées. The service was friendly. Everything was clean and comfortable. Plenty of parking. Will absolutely be going back.

Normally me, my husband and friends really enjoy this place. The food is always great, but tonight the service was to be desired. I understand that sometimes there's shortage in staff or you have a big party. The thing that rubbed me the wrong way was they wouldn't split our checks because we were a party of 6 or more.... (we were 6 including a baby. Our checks had been split many other times before with our numbers above 6). Finally the server said that he didn't normally do this but that he would split our checks 50/50 which we agreed. When we got our check we saw that a tip percentage had already been charged for a large group of 6 or more. Seriously?! Also a friend has normally been able to get a military discount in the past but this time we were told they don't do that.🤦

The first time I came here was a Tuesday and my boyfriend and I were craving sushi so we decided to try it. Mike (the owner) was making our sushi that night and he was so delightful and made the night so much fun. The flavor profile is out of the world, along with the creativity! When I first started going there I didn't even like raw fish but Mike slowly got me to like it. Definitely the best fish in the valley and best sushi environment. We go here at least twice a week!! Our custom roll is called the Nix Roll, it has shishito peppers, avocado and tuna on the inside and then seared blue fin tuna and lemon on top! I highly recommend.

Google
The best sushi I've ever eaten was an incredible combination of flavors and textures that left me speechless. The rice was perfectly cooked, with just the right amount of vinegar and sweetness to balance out the other ingredients. The fish was so fresh that it practically melted in my mouth, with a delicate texture and buttery flavor that was simply unforgettable. The accompanying sauces and garnishes were perfectly balanced, adding just the right amount of spice and flavor to complement the sushi without overpowering it. Overall, it was an experience that I will never forget, and that has set the bar incredibly high for all sushi that I will eat in the future. Personalities of the chefs were a succulent bonus. The hamachi Kama (fried chicken fish) was amazing. Sorry, not sorry.

Google
Kobe Sushi is a hidden gem! Super fresh sushi, great ramen, and fun vibes. It’s a cozy spot, so it can get busy, but totally worth it!

Google
We ordered six rolls and they were great. The one that stood out for us was the Shrimp Nips, it had everything one could love. We also had the spicy edamame and a enjoyed the spicy secret sauce. Ask around great experience.

Google
The service has been questionable in past after tonight I won't be ordering again. Called to place an order 40 minutes before posted closing time and was informed the kitchen was closing in 5 minutes. I was informed they were not taking orders because the kitchen was closing in 5 minutes. If not taking an order at that time wouldn't the kitchen be closed now. Our family has picked up food there weekly wanting to support a small neighborhood restaurant.

Yelp
Got turned around a bit following my GPS. I could hear it laughing as it had me pull into the parking lot behind the shopping center. Anyway.... We found the place and it is a cute little place. Neat. Clean. A decent layout. Pretty interesting menu. A definite sign that we need to make an effort to return. Granted, the ramen with gyoza is just a variation of what we called wonton-min back home. It's saimin (ramen) with wonton added in. It's still good no matter what you call it. Couldn't finish it cause my eyes are bigger than my stomach.

Yelp
We both had regular sized tonkotsu ramen, which was very large. The broth was deep and the meat was charred and delicious. We had two rolls and the flavors were good but the rice was not sticky, it crumbled apart in your mouth and was an unsatisfying texture. Their hot green tea was excellent. We went at lunch time on a Monday and there was only one other customer there. The staff were extremely friendly, service and ambience were nice. But I'm removing two stars bc of the disappointing rice.

Yelp
I've tried 8 rolls here. Two I would order again, the TNT and the Executive, two were just ok, the rest were not great. I've tried this place 3 times now because it's so close and others love it so much but it's really hit or miss for me.

Yelp
Used to love this place. Now I'm done. Ordered over $100 of food to go. Drive 20 minutes to get it and the same home. Order was wrong. Drove another 40 minutes round trip to have cold ramen when I got home. Worst part - no one at Kobe really cared that they screwed up our order and made me drive another extra hour. Never going back
google avatar

Nate G.

Yelp
The sushi, the ramen, it's all always freaking awesome. Chef Fukumitsu is the man! He trained in Japan to learn both.

Sugar P.

Yelp
I hope this review is taken seriously. We came to enjoy a meal, not to feel ignored. The food was good, and other staff showed kindness and empathy, but our waiter's attitude ruined the experience. It wasn't about expecting luxury service, just basic courtesy. Being ignored, not getting water, and never being checked on is unacceptable. If one staff can refill water with a smile, why can't the assigned server do the same? Please train your team consistently--one bad attitude reflects poorly on the whole place.
google avatar

Yelp
The best of the best! I live 40 minutes away, totally worth the drive! We love this spot for their ramen & sushi. Love the staff- we always sit at the sushi bar- if you're fortunate enough Mike the owner will be there and he'll recommend some amazing sashimi suggestions!
google avatar

Tom S.

Yelp
The Tonkotsu Ramen was as good as I've had in Utah. Pork Belly was exceptional. Their spicy edamame was also as good as any around. They were short staffed but luckily we were with friends for and in no rush. Their version of a traditional Japanese Chabudai eating area was fun and cozy especially for a dinner out with friends.
google avatar

Brett Z.

Yelp
Our go to sushi spot with some great ramen as well. Particularly love the curry ramen. Def recommend.
google avatar

Fred J.

Yelp
Great staff, fresh and diverse selection of fish, the owner works there and loves it and knows his customers by name. Truly a hidden gem.

Marley R.

Yelp
If I could give this place 0 stars I would. This place is a shit show! It took them almost an hour to get someone to take our order. Not only did they take forever to serve us but I had to request a server to come help us.
google avatar

Dennis J.

Yelp
I usually sit at the sushi bar and get rolls directly from the sushi chefs. They are always personable and it always turns out to be a mini party. The food is good.

Meagan R.

Yelp
Kobe always f*cks. They always have the best and most fresh cuts of tuna in SLC. Their ramen is my comfort food. Mano Ramen and otoro nigiri!
google avatar

Todd A.

Yelp
Nice ambiance and very friendly service. Good variety on the menu and some unique combinations, unfortunately the rolls were very bland and flavorless

Hannah D.

Yelp
We tried Kobe sushi tonight for the first time for our anniversary and we are excited to make this our regular spot! We sat at the sushi bar ordered 4 rolls & Mike made us one of his own creations, all were absolutely incredible! Mike and Emmy made the night with great recommendations and conversation! Thank you both so much for a perfect anniversary date night, we will definitely be back!

Jared I.

Yelp
This was the third time we've eaten here; each time the food has been really good, but the most recent time I felt the service was not the greatest. Sat at the sushi bar and the guy working behind the bar directly in front of us never acknowledged us when we sat down, during the meal, or when we left. Never asked us what we wanted, how we were doing, or if we needed anything at any time including an order. Waited ten minutes after sitting down and finally asked him if he could take our order. When we were ready to leave we asked him if he could get us the check and he made a comment to the effect that we should ask our server (who also never checked in on us other than one time, several minutes after we sat down). Basically, came away with the impression that we were inconveniencing the sushi chef each time we asked for something. This was disappointing because there are multiple reviews noting how friendly and welcoming the staff is here. I get it if the place is busy, but it doesn't take much effort at all to acknowledge a customer and let them know you'll take care of their needs, especially when they're sitting right in front of your work station. Overall, not a positive experience despite the good food.

Yelp
So, I understand that Covid has caused a lot of problems in the restaurant industry, and I'm understanding of that. However, the last few times I've been to Kobe is has been very inconsistent. From the service (especially the service), to the food. We went a few weeks ago and had one of the best meals ever. Perfect sushi, fresh and beautifully presented. Gyu Don with a perfect soft egg, wonderful pan fried Gyoza, and curry noodles that made you few warm inside. Tonight Marcel made some mistakes, and so did the kitchen. Soft eggs are soft eggs.... Not boiled eggs. Pan fried Gyoza maybe hit the pan for thirty seconds and we're almost cold, and curry ramen that still had the curry paste in the bottom of the bowl. I will go back because I love this place, but I hope they get back to the way they used to operate. A quick tip for Marcel, don't wave your finger at guests, ask when food is bot being eaten by the guests, and listen to the customer a little more when ordering.

Yelp
Jake Bird just now   Let me just say, this is the first review I've ever done. But it's necessary. I really hope someone that owns or runs the place reads this. We went to Kobe Sushi for my birthday dinner 4/25/24. This is usually our favorite place to go. They are usually bomb. Tonight was different. The two sushi chefs we drink AF. They were drinking a bottle of makers mark while they were making sushi. They made the sushi terribly. Messed up almost every order. One of them fell down and tipped the sushi rice all over himself. Then had ANOTHER shot! They let a little girl sit at the bar (major Utah DABC violation). They were slurring their words, using blow torches to sear the tuna and then handed me the hot plate, too drunk to work with knives, the floor was covered in food and water, the whisky bottle was right out in the open, they were handling food without washing their hands or gloves, etc. Just an absolute shit show. Further, the rest of the staff, (Chris was one of them) just stood around and watched them. No one on staff said anything to them or stopped them. Some of the other staff was drinking as well. Hopefully they aren't driving home. Whoever owns Kobe or Runs it needs to fire them and maybe Chris and some of the other staff. I truly hope they can figure it out. Usually a great place to eat. Truly and insane situation. Terrible birthday dinner.

Yelp
Yet another place that I might give 3.5. Service was SO slow! They are in no hurry. We started with edamame, miso, and tempura shrimp and veggies. It was all decent, but the shrimp and veggies was so small, and not cheap. All we had was sushi, but I hear the ramen is good. Based on sushi, we had some great rolls, and some that were just okay. The rolls that stood out were the dragon, caterpillar, rainbow, executive, and the summer breeze. The summer breeze was one of my favorites, but not my family due to the heat, it's spicy hot, but with the touch of honey, I loved it! Overall, it's not in my top 5, but worth a try, and they have good quality fish.

Yelp
Called three weeks in advance to make reservations for my daughters 30th birthday party (ten people total). Knowing it was Easter I asked if they would be open, they confirmed they would be. The night before they called "matter of factly" and told me they will now be closed. Wow! What a surprise! There is obviously no way I can get new reservations anywhere now/ I asked to speak with the manager and was told she would call me right back. After an hour of not hearing from her I called again and she "the manager" would not take my call. My wife and I go to this place once a week and usually do omakase, I take guests there all the time and talk this place up. NO MORE. What a rude way to treat a customer.

Yelp
A large group of 12 of us came here last night for my sister's birthday dinner. We were placed in the back area (I believe by request) where they have tatami seating. It looked neat, but if you or your group is 30 and up, you should most likely plan for lower back pain and numb butt cheeks, especially if you were there as long as we were. The first thing I noticed is that there was no music playing in the area, only in the main dining room up front, despite there being speakers overhead. If your group isn't feeling particularly chatty, this could be awkward. Initially it seemed like our server was annoyed to be there with us, but he did seem to warm up and get friendlier as the night went on and even brought us out some complementary edamame for the bday. So that was nice of him! Even though it didn't look very busy in the main dining room and they seemed decently staffed in the kitchen, our appetizers and mains came out sporadically. Everyone was eating their main dish at a different time. My miso soup was luke warm so I didn't even want to finish it. I will say that the summer breeze roll I ordered was very good - super spicy and citrusy and it tasted fresh. The mussel shooters I ordered as an app tasted great, but I did feel sick before dinner ended and had a rough night after... I want to think I just discovered a food sensitivity based on other past experiences elsewhere. We were there a minimum of three hours since service was fairly slow. This was my first time coming here and my sister said she was surprised because it was better before. I won't come back here.

Yelp
Amazing ramen, service was quick and the food was tasty at a reasonable price. Would recommend

John M.

Yelp
Seriously the smallest cuts of sashimi I have ever had. Ordered the taste of Japan. $60 bucks for 30 pieces of sashimi. I eat sushi normally 3-4 times a month. And this place is by far the stingiest place I have ever seen. A complete waste of time. My biggest mistake was not getting food from Sapa. A complete ripoff!

Anthony D.

Yelp
They are 5 stars in food, service, ambiance!!! They appreciate the fact that we know what we want and they always do their best to accommodate!

Rebecca L.

Yelp
They bussed a table, sat us at then then disappeared, no water no server stopped by to say "they would be with us shortly" nothing! Walked out

Gabe S.

Yelp
I travel for work and always try to eat local. This place is the real deal. I could tell the moment I ate a piece of tuna, which was extremely fresh. The sushi rice had the right vinegar from Japan, which is hard to find. The ramen was excellent. I'll try to go back on this trip and try more of the sushi.

Shawn E.

Yelp
I very much enjoy Kobe. I will continue to return often. Get there early or make a reservation.

Yelp
Lunch today at Kobe was a treat. While I was driving around listening to my Japanese language CD, bento was mentioned and since it was lunch time, I thought "why don't I take a quick drive to Kobe and have bento for lunch"? I'm really glad I made the choice to eat at Kobe. I ordered the sashimi bento which came with miso soup, a nicely sized salad, a bowl of rice, some tempura vegetables (shisho pepper, kombucha squash, potato and onion) with dipping broth, a California roll (upgraded to a shrimp roll) and six pieces of sashimi (tuna, yellowtail and salmon). The sashimi was super fresh and melted in my mouth while the accompanying side dishes were a great compliment to the meal. The service was good with a friendly vibe and the price was right for the quality of the ingredients. Kobe hasn't disappointed me yet and continued to shine today.

Yelp
When you think of the far east, you think of Asia. In this case, Asian cuisine comes to life in the far east corner of the Salt Lake valley, or specifically, in the Olympus Hills shopping mall. Their claim to fame is the Ramen noodles. My wife the Ramen and loved it. Definitely a hit! Since we were in Japanese territory I ordered the sushi rolls. The fish was fresh and my tuna roll and the salmon roll were meaty and delicious The California roll was made out of crab spelled with a K. The K is code for fake crab. This was not my favorite California roll. The Philly roll was put together nicely. The ambience is sort of divey, with dark and narrow rooms. We were there in the winter and the room temperature was definitely on the chilly side. The servers were prompt and our food arrived at our table as planned. Since this restaurant is located in a strip mall, there is plenty of convenient offstreet parking. Go ahead, breakout your compass, GPS or sextant and navigate to the Far East - of the Salt Lake Valley. Salute!

Neal B.

Yelp
The ramen was quality. It was fresh and full of flavor. My wife had some sushi and said it also was fresh and prepared well. The seating is comfortable but it is a small building and was quite packed which just goes with being popular. Overall, service, food and cleanliness were great and we will most likely visit here again.
google avatar

Jen g.

Yelp
Delicious and quality sushi!!!! We have been eating here for years. The variety of seating is traditional to american.

Jacob L.

Yelp
This is a response to Jake Bs review below. You're a disgrace to ppl named jake everywhere. Go back to AZ. Kobe is a great place and always has the best sushi and chefs. I've never seen anything as described in your "first review". Having read your other reviews you seem to have a pattern claiming that it's your first review then then bash the establishment with wild unfounded claims. Get a life nerd.

Derek G.

Yelp
Great ramen, kimchi and curry ramen in particular. Good atmosphere. Feels local and friendly.

Denise M.

Yelp
I've been going to Kobe for years. I must say they are slipping in the hygiene department. The place needs a deep clean and polish. It's just plain dirty and shabby. Grunge is not a good complement to raw fish. Their food is also not as impressive as it once was and the timing for rolls can be over an hour. The service is excellent though.

Utahgtr L.

Yelp
My daughter and I sat at the bar and ordered some rolls. The sushi chef offered several several sashimi recommendations as well and taught us about the different cuts of the tuna, including some of the best toro I have ever tasted. Definitely worth it.
google avatar

Amy S.

Yelp
I came here for a few to go orders and recently I noticed that the charge on my account was different than my receipt so I went through my receipts to find that they were adding more of a tip on my bill and I'm assuming they weren't trying to get caught since it was $2-3 more. I tried calling the manager and never got a call back. Very disappointed in this service and dishonesty.
google avatar

Bita W.

Yelp
My husband and I were the first customers to enter the restaurant. They sat us at a table near the bar and a cold wind came in through the door. We asked the waiter to change our table because of the cold and he did. I heard the girl who brought the water to our table ask the waiter why we changed tables. He indicated that we were cold. She laughed and said it's strange and it was colder where we had moved, but no longer felt a draft when the door opened. We ordered two sushi rolls and we watched as the people who arrived after us received their orders, ate, and even paid and we did had not yet received our order. I thought they forgot about us. The waiter apologized and said there were a lot of take out orders that came in all at the same time. He apologized and called his manager. She listened but did nothing to fix the problem like she didn't care and she was in a hurry. Nothing was done. It was our first time in this place and we will not return due to the slow service. The rolls tasted ok, but also much smaller than we are used to at other restaurants.
google avatar

Brady L.

Yelp
Best sushi in town. The chefs are great. They'll hook you up with their favorites which never disappoint. But also... best ramen in town, which I get more often. The kimchi ramen. Mabo men. And tonkatsu. All great. the charsu (spelling?) Pork melts in your mouth. Great noodles. Excellent restaurant.
google avatar

Arlene O.

Yelp
They have the best Tonkotsu in town. It was so rich in flavor and creamy like I wouldn't mind if it's made from pork broth. Been here for so many times and I apologize for being lazy on not making a review from my first visit I would recommend this place anytime! Amazing staff and very good food! Note: The place is not that big and has few tables, I like to come here on weekdays not on the weekends bc I'm sure it gets pretty packed and busy.

Alexandra H.

Yelp
This place gets crowded so get there early! The had an amazing playlist of 80's music playing it made our experience that much better! We shared pan seared and deep fried gyoza both were delicious! My husband got the summer breeze roll and he loved it said it was a great level of spice. We for sure will be back
google avatar

Keri C.

Yelp
We are frequent guests at Kobe and they were one of the first local places we knew we needed to support right now. Take out was a breeze - even with our off menu orders. Everything was perfectly packaged and ready to go. On top of that, you don't find better people than Mike and team. They truly make you feel like part of the community. We love you guys and can't wait to come sit at the bar again soon!
google avatar

KT T.

Yelp
Came here again for my birthday meal. Very mediocre. Not what it was just last year. The place is dirty, the server average, and the sushi average. The gyoza had been pan fried awhile ago, and there was long hair on them. A waste of money. The miso soup was room temperature. The hamachi Kama was good. The spicy edamame was good but the amount was a fraction of what it should have been . The sushi was good. The cost for two was $150. Disappointing experience.
google avatar

Lisa R.

Yelp
Well , what a disappointment.... Normally good food but Service was horrible (Chris) forgot items, brought items out very randomly, 2 that should have been hot were not even warm. Unfortunately we will not be back We read similar reviews but thought it couldn't have gone downhill that fast.....
google avatar

Sunyoung K.

Yelp
Always my favorite place to go to. I know I can always rely on them for tasty food with fast service. The food is decently priced, portions are pretty big too. The atmosphere is very relaxed, especially in comparison to Kyoto - another very big Japanese restaurant in the valley. The service is always great, never a huge wait even on weekends.
google avatar

Dane F.

Yelp
Mike makes amazing sushi creations! Arrive at opening time and sit at the bar and let chef offer artistic culinary masterpieces!
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
Best place for ramen in the valley. Can get busy and the seating is limited so come early in the evening times or on weekdays.
google avatar

Ron B.

Yelp
Best sushi ever !!! I've lived all over the country and this ranks up there with the best. I usually do the trust me special
google avatar

Rachel W.

Yelp
The Ramen here is the best. We compare all ramen in the land to the tonkotsu we get here. Nothing else has ever been as good (we have yet to go to Japan so may update this later). The broth is creamy, the pork meaty and delicious, comes with all of the favorites too- fish cake, spring onions, mushrooms, soft boiled egg. Make sure you top with chili oil and togarashi sprinkled on top if you like it spicy. Sunomono salad is perfect amount of pickle, squid and seaweed salad is one of my favorites and the sushi always makes everyone happy. Our favorite ramen and forever fans!

Henry B.

Yelp
Great stuff over there at Kobe. Recommend big time, I have never been disappointed. Amazing!
