Simple-yet-intimate Japanese restaurant preparing artful sushi & cooked dishes to pair with sake.
"Inspired by the seafood-rich coasts of Hokkaido, the Hokkai Don at this new Silver Lake spot is filled with near-symmetrical rows of salmon, blue crab, and salmon roe. It’s a simple chirashi — way less extravagant than some of the other boxes on this list — but that doesn’t mean the fish quality is any less high. The crab meat is soft and slightly salty, hotate scallops are creamy and sprinkled in furikake, and for ikura lovers, you’ll get beyond a generous portion of the juicy, bright-orange salmon roe. It’s a straightforward, well-organized meal. If you’re a Wes Anderson completist or receive The Container Store gift cards on your birthday, this might be the chirashi for you." - Kat Hong
"Once a month on Saturday, Psychic Wines in Silver Lake hosts Moyosubi, an omusubi pop-up that donates 20% of its profits to . If you’re lucky enough to place an order via DM before founder/omusubi maker Maya Kambe is sold out, go for one of everything available. What you’ll get is a cluster of color-coded, saran-wrapped omusubi, plus enough nori sheets to go around. While the beef sukiyaki, salmon, and mushroom options are ideal snacks that could double as decor (if only they weren’t perishable), the tamari-cured egg yolk rice ball is what we covet. When you bite into this one in particular, it’s hard not to have a corny eureka moment. The yolk glows eternally golden, and the gooey, salty tang is nothing short of a miracle. You can keep up with Moyosubi on to preorder the next monthly drop." - Arden Shore
"A newcomer named Sunset Sushi opens today in Silver Lake, turning out chirashi boxes, rice bowls, rolls, and more. The restaurant takes over the former home of the beloved Ma’am Sir Filipino restaurant from chef Charles Olalia, which closed earlier this year as a result of the ongoing pandemic." - Farley Elliott
"Kitsune is a small takeaway counter in Silver Lake, and an offshoot of Kombu Sushi. And there’s basically only one thing on the menu here - perfectly crafted onigiri, or Japanese rice balls, which are the ideal snack for doomscrolling through Twitter and/or staring blankly at the wall until a car passes by and snaps you back to reality. Each rice ball comes with a filling, like salted salmon, tuna mixed with Kewpie mayonnaise, and chicken gochujang. Available for takeout or delivery, order through their website." - Kat Hong
