The 11 Best Restaurants In Jack London Square - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Kuidaore Handroll Bar only has bar seating, which makes it great for a solo pit stop or one-on-one dinner where you can be in and out in 30 minutes flat. This temaki spot on Jack London’s main plaza serves 16 different types of handrolls. The fish quality is stellar, and the rice is extra sticky—we especially enjoy the seriously spicy sake, fatty hamachi, and pickled radish. There’s also a short list of crudos and sashimi on the menu, but stick to the handrolls for the best experience." - julia chen 1, lani conway, ricky rodriguez

Here Are the Hottest New Restaurants in the East Bay, June 2024

"Kuidaore continues to further the hand roll footprint in the Bay Area, folding hamachi and spicy scallops into crisp sheets of seaweed. Opening in Jack London Square, the restaurant lets diners choose their own adventure with fillings that include unagi or spicy tuna, plus more luxe alternatives such as an uni, toro, and caviar. Hand rolls can be purchased individually or as part of a set, and there are sashimi and “crudo” sections on the menu for a change of pace." - Dianne de Guzman

Google
Stopped by for lunch! Excellent quality on the fish. Tuna was fresh and reminded me of eating them in Japan. They have great Toro as well. The lunch menu has volume and great flavor. Highly recommend!

Google
The food was delicious, nothing super innovative, but tasty fish, perfectly crisp nori and fun cocktails. I loved the happy spoons and premium hand rolls. No complaints about the food, but it was quite expensive, two of us spent 200 including tip and I was still hungry. The service and ambiance are my reason for less stars. The lights are extremely bright so that detracted from the experience. Some softer, warmer light for evening would bring the vibe up to match the pricing would be an easy fix. The staff was nice enough but it felt more cafe casual and unrefined. I would maybe try it again for lunch if they had a lunch special.

Google
Kuidaore is a wonderful restaurant! I highly recommend including it in your visit to Jack London Square. Food: The fish is fresh, delicious and high quality. The small plates are creative and have all been really flavorful and well-balanced (I have just 1 more on the list to try). My only criticism is that some of the fish is so tender it can be difficult to get the whole bite from the plate to my mouth. The handrolls are really good, each one is packed with fish and the seaweed is super crispy - exactly what you'd want. They'll let you split them between 2 people if you want to be sure to have room to try a lot of them. There are a few expensive, very fancy ones - think edible gold, wagyu, caviar...incredible to taste and beautiful presentation. Their miso soup is delicious and an inexpensive extra that you should definitely try. People: The staff are amazing! So welcoming and accommodating. After a few visits, our favorite waitress recognized us and had our drinks started before we even sat down! The chef/owner is friendly and checks in on customers when she can. Atmosphere: The chairs are awkwardly tall but it gives you a great view of the handroll station. It's an intimate setting that's very comfortable. The only negative is that when it's busy it gets pretty noisy. To reiterate, I definitely recommend going here if you're in the area!

Google
Intimate sushi and Japanese restaurant. The handrolls are delicious, crispy and subtle flavor. The fish is fresh (key to good sushi and sashimi). It's definitely higher level Japanese restaurant. And the servers are attentive and very friendly. They gave my toddler special attention and kept him happy ( no small feat). Definitely a premium sushi and sashimi restaurant at a reasonable price.

Google
Wow. This place was incredible. 10/10, no notes. Food was delicious, our server was so warm and friendly, not too expensive. We’ll definitely be coming again and again.

Google
Delicious food, friendly staff, and great location! We LOVED the maguro and hamachi crudos. The seaweed salad was simple and yummy. The hand rolls in the 4 combo were each unique with perfectly crispy nori and fresh fish or veggies, and the hot sake hit the spot! We were happy to have room for the jasmine ice cream and calamansi sorbet as well - both really tasty and creative - don't skip dessert! We are so excited that they're finally open and are definitely coming back soon!

Google
Best handrolls I've had in the Bay. We went for Oakland's Restaurant Week and the menu was spectacular. Everything was delicious. Highly recommended!

Google
I had high hopes for this hand roll spot in Oakland, but overall, the experience was pretty underwhelming. The food is very average, and a lot of it seems like it's just pre-made items that you can easily pick up at a Japanese market or wholesaler. The seaweed salad, wasabi octopus, and ankimo all tasted like they were store-bought, not freshly made in-house. To make matters worse, the seaweed on the rolls was wet and soft, completely lacking the crisp texture you'd expect. For the price, I was expecting much higher quality and attention to detail. Unfortunately, it just didn’t live up to that. If you're paying a premium, you expect fresh, unique dishes, not things you could grab off a shelf at a market. Not worth it for what they charge. It felt more like a cheap American sushi roll place trying to act like trendy and high end dining. Not recommended at all, very amateur

Yelp
We loved the rolls and food. We kept ordering more cucumber and avocado rolls and salmon truffles. Service was great.

Yelp
I came across this restaurant while at the Jack London Farmer's Market and I vowed I would return. Sure enough, a couple weeks later I did. When you first go inside you can see that the only seating available is at this huge bar and rightly so. Everything was made in front of you except for the small plates that came out of the kitchen. The accent wallpaper at the back was gorgeous and ornate. EVERYTHING I ordered tasted fresh and delicious!! The best, obviously, was the A5 wagyu and toro served with uni and caviar. The uni was buttery, the caviar gave off a light saltiness and both played well with the meat and fish. The server, there was only one, was attentive but there weren't too many customers during lunchtime anyway. I wonder if that changes during dinner time. My only "complaint" is this is not a place you go to get full. It's a place to get cocktails, which I heard were creative and yummy but I couldn't indulge that day, and a little food. Treat it as your cocktail and appetizer stop before you go someplace else for a full meal.

Yelp
I love handrolls so came to check out this new place for lunch. Ambiance is nice with bar seating and we can watch the sushi chefs make our handrolls. They also have a back kitchen. Staff is friendly and very nice. We ordered: Happy spoon - yum! Uni and caviar and quality fish. The combo was excellent and a burst of flavor in our mouths. Tuna tartare - beautifully presented. Fresh fish. I like this version of chips. Handrolls - sorry no pics because they all look the same. Ordered hamachi, unagi, and a negitoro. All fresh. However they were small especially for the price. I thought it would be open handrolls with larger amounts of fish, but they wrapped and closed them. Overall food is fresh, but quantity is small for the price so I did leave hungry.

Yelp
Compact intimate counter handroll bar offering fresh sashimi and excellent service. Everything has been super tasty, and they even offer to cut the handrolls in half when you're sharing. I don't know if it's a style but they don't wrap the rolls tightly, so you really have to grip hard with your hand to ensure the rice is not falling out while dipping into soy sauce. The sashimi choices are delicious. We ordered the hamachi and king salmon. The Hamachi was beautiful, dressed with pretty little flowers and micro greens; I have to warn you each slice was packed with a punch (note the thinly sliced Serrano atop). The king salmon slices were creamy, fatty, and smoky; they did not linger long on the plate. I just wish they came with more slices. We went on a week night and there was no line we got seated right away. Our waiter Vincent was so warm and welcoming, checking in on us frequently and would become very apologetic whenever we had to wait. There was another female server who brought over our sashimi plates from the kitchen, but she didn't seem as friendly as Vincent. She'd kind of bark out our orders before slamming the plate down between my husband and myself. Kind of strange. I guess it was a bad day for her. They have fantastic sake offerings. Get the Kikusui which is very clean and sweet tasting. We didn't try their cocktails but they all looked alluring. Why the 4 stars? It's waay too loud inside for my taste. I noticed there were no drapery or curtains to help absorb the sound. Customer sound level can amplify and echo in magnitude in that small space. It was really hard to hear the wait staff. Maybe I'm getting old. Regardless, this is a welcome addition in Jack London square. That whole strip has been pretty dead for sometime, and we waited eagerly for this whole area to blossom, but it's just been sluggish. Hopefully this will be one step towards the revitalization of our JLS neighborhood.

Yelp
I wanted to report back that the food has improved. I went back a second time with two other friends that wanted to check this spot out. The handrolls had warm rice, crispy nori! That just elevates the handroll experience exponentially!!

Yelp
New Handroll spot in Jack London Square! As soon as I saw this place open up, I knew I had to stop by and try it. I wasn't too hungry so didn't end up ordering the sets, but I think the three Handroll set is such a good deal for $23! You get sake, hamachi and spicy tuna. Each one is already priced at $8/9, so you do save a bit. Except you cannot mix and match, unfortunately. Honestly, 3-4 of these Handrolls can feel pretty filling. Overall, the flavors were pretty good. The seaweed was nice and crispy, and the rice was warm and seasoned. Although I wasn't blown away by the flavor of the rice, the fish was very fresh, so overall, not bad but not amazing. I ended up getting the hamachi Handroll because it's one of my favorites, also ordered the negitoro, and the happy spoons. The spoons were a little small, but had a little bit of everything that I love: toro, truffle ponzu, tobiko, and uni! If it had quail egg too it would've been perfection. - S E A T I N G - Bar seating around 15-20 seats available so plenty of room. - P A R K I N G - Parking below Jack London square by the hour. Prefer to park downstairs to avoid getting bipped. - P R I C E - Honestly, pretty good value given the location and for good quality fish. - S E R V I C E - Service is great! The servers are all super attentive and friendly.

Yelp
What a cute spot!! The hand rolls were fantastic and the pacing of delivering food was timed great. It's especially fun to watch the chefs prepare the wagyu rolls - spoiler alert: they use a chef's torch for those and it's pretty spectacular! The four stars is because when we came in and were hoping to get seated it was confusing and we felt ignored. No one was manning their host stand (totally fine, the place is small) but it being there and us waiting by it, we made eye contact with staff but non made any move to greet us or let us know if/how to get seated which was awkward and kind of frustrating. We waited there for a while. They are a new restaurant so I'm sure this will get sorted out soon.

Yelp
Cozy little gem in Oakland. The hand rolls were so good that you just keep ordering more and more. I tried the tuna tartare with shrimp chips, spicy tuna, California crab, and spicy scallop. Five out of five for everything I tried! The service was good...no complaints. We were in and out.

Yelp
Went here for dinner and was craving hand rolls. Found this out from a friend and we went here for dinner. It's in the Jack London plaza area. Cute interior with all bar seating. Maguro Ponzu: Pretty solid appetizer. Very refreshing and the fish quality was good. It's more of a sweet ponzu and shoyo than straight ponzu. Sweet, salty and tangy goodness. Besides from the sauce and fish, the dish lacked anything that would make it standout. 4/5 We opted for the 3 handroll set with Sake, Hamachi and Spicy Tuna. Everything was very average. Good portion with a good ratio of rice to fish. Sake was good, Hamachi wasn't super fresh, and Spicy tuna was also average. I normally don't consider price point into my reviews but 3 handrolls for $23 is kinda absurd considering they're so average. For comparison, Yonsei has a 5 set for $29. 2/5 I was interested in trying some of their premium rolls but none of the basic rolls surprised me enough to want to try them. I don't see myself coming back to this place.

Yelp
The service was great and the workers were super nice and attentive. There is only seating at the "bar"/chef seating. The handrolls were soo good and I loved their uni! Some handrolls were hard to bite down bc of the seaweed but that didn't really take away from how good the rolls were. I wish there was more fish in the rolls though. Overall, I do recommend and will be coming back to get my sushi handroll fix here.

Yelp
This is a late review. We came here after an event down the street. It was near closing time but the service was excellent. The handrolls were really fresh and tasty. We also had a lot of fun interacting with the waiter. The place hasn't been open long but this place definite warrants a revisit.

Yelp
Came in after an event down the street and had some of the best service! Shoutout to Vincent for being such an amazing, charismatic host! Vincent had me and my mom laughing the whole time and really made the experience that much better! We got the 4 roll set and everything was amazing! The fish tasted fresh and the sequence in which they served it complimented each other really well. My favorite was the scallops- it was actually spicy and it just melted in your mouth. They just opened a month or two ago, so I can't wait to see this business really blossom! I'm excited to come back and show my friends this new gem!

Yelp
Finish with a Milk tea ice cream! Parking was easy, we went underground in the lot underneath the bowling alley. We came during their soft opening on a Wednesday and were seated right away. Everything was delicious. Their premium menu has a combo a5 toro and uni with caviar and gold flakes that is a must try. We also had a bottle of sake and ordered a side of caviar to enjoy with everything. I even tried a Matcha IPA that was green and reminiscent of st Patrick's day from the color. The owner also brought out a new dish that wasn't on the menu yet that was a Toro carpaccio. Amazing! Definitely a new go to spot when you're craving high quality fish and catching up with a couple friends.

Lauren Q.

Yelp
Have never been to a hand roll bar before, but this has set the expectations high! This place is quaint and simple inside - I can imagine one day soon as it gets more popular there will be quite the wait given that there are about 20 seats and the pace is on the slower side (not a complaint!). The service was friendly and attentive. The food is absolutely delicious. I got the set of 4 and it just kept getting tastier as it went down the list. The rolls are served one at a time. My friend and I got a few small plates to share too. Total was about $150 for the whole meal, including 2 delicious mocktails. Get the pandan crème brûlée!

Yelp
Service: very nice, polite, and attentive. Food: they focus on handrolls. Tasty but small and pricey, not like the traditional "cone" rolls. Setting: bar like service, no tables. No bathroom, which is weird. May come back if they lowered their prices or had happy hour specials.

Amazing and creative food. Some of the best fish I've had lately. Great service. Only bar seating

Yelp
SHMACKIN. 10/10 food, A1 service. Definitely coming back for more. Right in the middle of Jack London.

Lily C.

Yelp
Came in for soft opening. Really excited to have a handroll place in the neighborhood. Wanted to have something equivalent to KazuNori in Los Angeles, but Kuidaore blew me out of the water! I ordered the 3 handroll, California (red crab) roll, A5 Wagyu, Cucumber Sonomono, Hamachi Crudo. - Everything I ordered was delicious. - They serve REAL WASABI. - Service was very attentive and the staff are welcoming. - Get the truffle citrus soy on the side. Will be back frequently.

Yelp
my friends and i visited during their soft opening and were really impressed that it was only their third day open as they've seemed to be so well organized. the service from the staff were very kind and welcoming. i love the ambiance and the way their bar is set up. the aesthetics is giving modern and clean which feels really enjoyable w great music choice. the presentation of the food was so cute! every bite was so unique and tasty. i would definitely recommend this and will be coming back!

Yelp
Great service, calming space, and the food is incredible. Feels like an authentic sushi bar, sitting at the counter and watching the chef, who then watches you and places your next plate only when you are ready.

Yelp
I love this place! Whenever I want sushi but more light, refreshing, & delicious.. kuidaore is the spot! Amazing hand rolls! Fresh ingredients, good amount of options, and friendly service. Love the cozy atmosphere too. Catch me there on Fridays with the crew!

Yelp
Yummy new place in Jack London Square across from Plank. Great friendly service and rolls. Had most of the crudos and those were a fav. Will be back for sure

Elizabeth W.

Yelp
Great experience-- 100% will return. I highly enjoyed my lunch here today. Their miso soup was really tasty, and a generous portion. The maguro ponzu crudo was obviously fresh and flavorful. I ordered the set of 3 hand rolls and each was great. My only complaint is that the spicy tuna was almost too spicy for my liking, but that is if I'm being extremely nit-picky. The staff were all extremely nice and took their time explaining the menu and giving recommendations. When I have more time, I look forward to trying more of the menu. So happy they're open in Jack London.
google avatar

Jarren S.

Yelp
I came here during their soft opening to try it out. There were a little bit of errors when it came to my order but nothing big and the staff was understanding and ending up letting me eat an extra hand roll and gave me a beer. It's a soft opening so I'm sure they'll work out the kinks in no time! I really enjoyed all the rolls and overall have no complaints. My favorite rolls were the hamachi, spicy tuna, spicy scallop and the hamachi crudo. The part I really appreciate are the no frills rolls and the simplicity. It's a cheaper alternative for about a third of the price than the other handroll spot in the area. Also really appreciate having a side of pickled wasabi as an option because it's my favorite

Anh P.

Yelp
Kuidaore is a hidden gem! The hand rolls are fresh, flavorful, and beautifully crafted. The ambiance is cozy and inviting, perfect for a casual dinner or a night out with friends. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, always ready to recommend their favorites. Definitely a must-try spot for sushi lovers in the Bay Area!

Tiffany S.

Yelp
First we were welcomed by the owner herself. Super sweet! We were super excited to try this place out because we love sushi and handrolls! There's only 1 or 2 that we know of and finally another one to add to the books. First we had some beers. Then ordered the 3 handroll set along with few of the single handrolls negitori, A5 waygu with uni caviar and hamachi appetizer! And we couldn't stop there so we added more to our order why not right? The owner was so nice to ask us for our opinion on their poss new upcoming appetizer dish and it was A1. Toro was delicious with so much flavor on top. Oh and I'm usually not into spicy tuna because all other place makes it very strong with too much sesame oil taste/smell but their spicy scallop and spicy tuna was so good and it even had a perfect amount of kick! The vibes and service was great. We understand they just opened so it wouldn't hurt to give a small reminder you ordered something if you didn't get it.This place will have lots of people coming. Thank you guys! My daughter loved every single handroll we got!
