Yelp
I've seen this place featured on so many TikTok's and Insta reels and figured it was finally time to try it, especially now that they hype has died down. This place is nestled in the same shopping center as Dim Sum King and the police station, so it's easy to miss if you're not looking close.
We came in around 12:45 on a Saturday for lunch and there was no wait. We requested to sit in the insta-famous honeycombs, and there were a couple of them available. What a cool experience! Despite having to climb a set of narrow stairs, they view is great and it's an intimate setting, perfect for intimacy and serious conversations.
After perusing the menu and debating what to order, we settled on: Popcorn Chicken for appetizer, Tokyo Tonkotsu Shoyu Ramen, Classic Japanese Omurice which came with a Thai Tea, and the Japanese Cherry Blossom Jelly for dessert.
The popcorn chicken was perfectly crispy and had just the right amount of salt and MSG flavoring (no shame). These were addicting, and we kept popping these in our mouths, careful to save room for the rest of the food we had coming.
We got the Tokyo Tonkotsu Shoyu Ramen with black garlic, as it comes with either white garlic or black garlic. We were told the black garlic has a stronger garlicky flavor, so that was a definite yes for us (vampires beware). I'm glad we chose this, as we are both garlic lovers, and it went so well in the tonkotsu broth. It did not overpower the pork bone flavoring, and was a great complement to the chashu pork and vegetables. The ramen did come with corn, in addition to the bamboo shoots, wood-ear mushroom, and seaweed - I'm not used to corn being in Japanese ramen, but no complaints. The broth itself was flavorful and the chashu pork was perfectly tender.
On to the famous Omurice which I believe this place is known for. At $20, the most expensive fried rice I've ever ordered. Its was tasty, but the fried rice itself was nothing exorbitant. You are really just paying for the presentation: the server cutting the egg down the middle and pouring the gravy over the top. For the gravy, you are given the choice of curry sauce or demi glace sauce - we asked for both! This was a good call, as it allowed us to try each. My favorite was the demi glace sauce, as it had a nice balance of sweet and savory. While the curry sauce was also really good, the curry flavor was quite strong and is better suited to a Japanese Katsu curry, rather than as a dressing on fried rice.
Upon Yelp check-in, they offer a free dessert choice between Japanese Cherry Blossom Jelly or Matcha Pudding with Red Bean. We opted for the former, and it was a great choice. The jelly was gelatinous and as a cherry flavor enthusiast, the cherry was just right and not overpowering. It came with an additional glaze that you can pour on top of the jelly if you desire more cherry flavor.
Service was excellent and considering we were way up in the honeycomb, the waitstaff still made an effort to walk all the way up to deliver our food, refill waters, and check on us periodically. There is conveniently a little bell at the table similar to what you see at Korean restaurants, so this is a good way to flag down the servers in case they don't see you being down at ground level.
I'm glad to have found a new ramen spot, and in Bellaire too! We'll definitely return and try more offerings on the menu. So many more choices for ramen and appetizers! I don't know if I'd order the omurice again given the price tag, but rather save that for more variety of nomz at the table!
