Where to Eat Chicago’s Best Sandwiches | Eater Chicago

"It’s not as nationally famous as other iconic Chicago dishes but the jibarito deserves recognition. Originally created at the late Borinquen by Juan Figueroa, the Chicagoan-Puerto Rican sandwich is defined by thinly sliced steak, lettuce, tomato, mayo, and cheese between fried plantains. Today, it’s available at many Latin American restaurants like La Bomba, where the recipe remains unchanged. Online orders can be placed here." - Naomi Waxman

A Guide To Chicago’s Secret Steakhouses

"Bear with us for a second here. While the jibarito at La Bomba in Humboldt Park isn’t exactly what you might typically consider a steak, it’s kind of like a full steakhouse dinner in sandwich form. It consists of charred, tender beef between two fried plantains (standing in for side dishes), plus tomato, lettuce, and cheese (there’s your salad), and a delicious garlic mayo that ties everything together. It will make your breath bad for days, but it’s completely worth it, and you don’t have to make a reservation, sign a lease for a huge booth, or stare down a traveling tray of raw steak to eat it." - adrian kane

On my visit to Chicago for the P.R festival my cousin wanted to take me for lunch so we hit up this spot and I must say it did not disappoint. The food was fantastic a 10/10 the art on the walls is amazing the tables are amazing. The waitress was very friendly and sweet. Food was made to order and came to us hot and tasty. Recommend to anyone who loves Puerto Rican cuisine and for any first timers you’ll love it. I had the Jabrito sandwich with a side of rice Arrozo con gandules. It was like $10 bucks plenty of food and amazing.

Finally made it here after hearing about this place for years. Delicious, authentic, lively spot. Enjoyable space with seating all the way in the back. Classic salsas playing. Really good jibaritos, alcapurrias, and rellenos. Great vibe!

If you're going to order catering from this restaurant I suggest you call them the day before to confirm the order. I placed an order with this place back in March, 3 months ago through the EZcater app. When I arrived they forgot about my order, didn't even know what I was talking about. They asked to see my order on my phone to verify that I did indeed place an order. They screenshot my phone screen then go to the back, I guess to ask the manager what to do. All I see the workers scrambling to fulfill an order for for 55 people. Taking food from the takeout center into big pans. Then seeing them barely frying my 100 PC fried chicken order... An order of a total of $415, by the way. I was waiting there for one hour for them to make my food. I was late to my daughters party because of this. I was beyond upset. I spoke to the guy, guessing he's the manager and told him I wanted a discount for their mistake. He said he'll call EZcater to see what he can do. He never called them and they had no idea what I was talking about. I will never order from this restaurant again. You lost my business indefinitely! Super disappointed in this place!

When you walk in the first thing you see is like a take out area. In fact, if you don't know there is a restaurant in the back, you'll probably think the take-out area IS the restaurant. Once you make your way into the back, the first thing you see is the wall murals. Traditional puertorican art of jibaros, people playing dominoes en el campo and more. Now let's talk about the food. I had the Mofongo con Chicharron de Pollo and a side order of tostones. I think the mofongo was on point. The plantains were not ripe, it was season just right and had the perfect texture. The chicken was seasoned well and fried perfectly and it went well with the mofongo. The waiter was friendly and it had a memory of an elephant. He took all of our orders with out writing anything down and got them all right. The only thing I was not happy about is that they have no air conditioning. I ask and I was told by a regular there that it's been like that for ever. I had a good time and I'm definitely coming back.

Yelp
La Bomba gets 5 stars for the absolutely authentic delicious Puerto Rican food! The friendly down to earth service is what keeps the rating at 5 stars. The owner/manager walks around and engages tables with the waiter like you're a friend from the neighborhood. It also seems he may bring a small sample of items from the kitchen on a nice white rectangular dish. LOL, not sure if this is standard practice or because we chatted him up so much, but he did the same to another table...so don't be shy about being a friendly customer. Although we ordered the banana appetizer, he suddenly appeared table side with some lechon, blood sausage, a sweet fried corn item with cheese inside and few other small items...all DELICIOUS! The seating area is intimate but this is truly a Humboldt Park neighborhood restaurant and it has that island restaurant feel. It's not overly fancy on the order of downtown Streeteville, but it's not trying to be. It's casual come as you will. I love the unique tables taking me back to a seaside restaurant in P.R. To get food better than La Bomba, you'd have to be in P.R. itself! I had the breaded steak with red salsa sauce and arros con gandules that came with a flavorful broth containing a few beans. The star of my meal was the cook on the steak. The breading was well seasoned and cooked to a nice crust, but the meat inside was tender and moist...a testament to the excellent cook! The steak could be totally enjoyed just like that on its own! BUT...when you marry the succulent green/red pepper and onion red salsa like gravy sauce (served in a cup on the side)...OMG!!! The dish really comes alive. I chose to cut a piece of breaded steak and then spoon some sauce on top, but eat it as you like. Gordon Ramsey says you should never plate and present a beautifully cooked crusted/crispy item with the sauce already on top. You can even put the red sauce on the rice...it makes everything even better! My dining partner chose the un-breaded pork chops with the same red sauce and poured the sauce directly on the chops which were also moist and properly seasoned. For dessert we chose the flan which was really good. This is my second time at La Bomba and it reminds me that it's still as good as the first time when I had a fabulous jibarito sandwich! Great tasting food, down home friendly neighborhood service at truly exceptional prices! What more could anyone ask for??? I really can't wait to take some new people there!

Yelp
Came here with my cousins to have some yummy rican food while I'm in Chicago. We ordered some Jibarito sandwiches (they are huge) and mofongo de camarones (shrimp) and have to order me some Malta (yum!). Everything is cook to order so be patient and you will get a flavorful meal that will fill you. The ambience is like a family party with good music flowing through the place and cool art to look at. At the front of the restaurant they had a person selling their 3D art and jewelry. Got some of those too. Really cute. i definitely recommend this spot. Love to see the staff enjoy their job and they're dancing and singing and are chill. They have live performances as well.

Yelp
So this place is a give star rated place, let me tell you why... 1. Hospitality Puerto Rican style- if you don't know then you will. Its warm inviting and feels like coming home. 2. Atmosphere- warm fun and musical. The amazing mural on the wall will transform you to an island wonderland. 3. Food - the recipes are as authentic as the hospitality and atmosphere. Worth the trip to this place. See my pictures for an invitation to their fine menu. My lunch: Alcapurra de yuca, cafe con leche y pollo guisado. Buen provecho mi gente...

Yelp
I watched as they piled lechon on a plate til the top almost wouldn't close. But this is what was put on two plates served to me. Is it because I have a darker complexion? Is it because I don't speak Spanish? I didn't want to make a scene, but the difference in these plates and the plates I saw piled high with meat........ How would I not question it? Paid same price, got different service. Beef tender but dry and has absolutely no seasoning. Like boiled in water then served. The puertorican rice is barely ok.Beans is all water. Not even a fourth of the cup is actual beans. $40 on garbage. A friend took me here 15+ yrs ago and it was the bomb. Service received today was a straight dud. Not likely to make that trek again. Really disappointed.

Yelp
The best I've ever had they are so underrated and it's Insane. I will forever get my catering from them

Yelp
This has been our go to Puerto Rican spot for the last few years. Seems like a Venezuelan spot now. First time going back since the remodel. Employees drinking beer at the front door. Smaller portions. All the food was off. They didn't have half the things we asked for. Hope they get it together.

Yelp
My husband and I have ordered from here a few times, with me usually getting Mofongo con camarones en salsa (shrimp Mofongo) so this time I decided to try the Mofongo con carne fritta (fried pork). Not sure what I was thinking because I don't even like fried pork! The pieces were fried hard and not appealing to me at all. I know some people like it but it was terrible hard fried pieces of pork that I did not like or eat. Luckily hubby ordered a pound of roast pork (and the arroz con granules) and shared with me. That tender, tasty pork, along with the Mofongo, both covered with the tasty sauce was much better. Will stick with what I know! They have a nice dining room and we would like to dine in one day.

Yelp
Was recommended the Jibarito Sandwich from this restaurant, so I came by to try it when visiting Chicago this past weekend. TBH I wasn't super impressed - the plantain didn't add much to it at all (bland flavor), and the meat was pretty dry. The portion size was nice, but I'd go elsewhere for a sandwich. Service was perfectly fine - was a bit loud when it became busy, and we had to flag someone down several times for a to-go box and the check. No major complaints otherwise!

Yelp
I really like this place a lot. I come all the way from Milwaukee and I love eating here. But man the last time I was there the girl that took my order. She must've been slow like as in not being coherent in understanding basic instructions or something, she wrote and crossed out my order a good 4/5 times. Like whattttttt??? Then when I get my order it's all messed up. Like HOW? Did you manage to mess my order up after u wrote it and re wrote it all them times. Lol I'm laughing cus it's wild to me I don't get it. In all I guess til next time. Maybe I'll get to actually eat and enjoy my food and Ill change the review.

Yelp
Now this place is no joke , the food here taste just like you would expect at a family event. It's delicious , fresh and flavorful. The service is a little different as the inside is kind of tight so they move as fast as they can but with great efforts. The ambiance is upbeat and relaxing as the music goes with your food and reflects the culture. Enjoy some Puerto Rican food that leaves you wanting more.

Brenda D.

Yelp
Good food but poor customer service. Thank goodness there are other good Puerto Rican restaurants in Chicago.

Yelp
Well, it could have been bad if I had not asked about the chicken. I say this because I ordered fried chicken and received baked chicken. It is not ok to give a customer what you think they want rather than what was ordered. If you don't have the item that was ordered just say we don't have that item available at this time. What you don't do is give a customer what you think they want. Luckily, I asked about the chicken and the lady was honest and said, we gave you baked Chicken because we had no fried chicken. Uhmmmm, no. I didn't want baked chicken. I told her this and she said, what would you like? I ordered the fried pork chops and was very happy. She also gave me the order of baked chicken. Well, I would think so since I paid for it. All in all the food was really good no complaints about that. I gave them four stars because the food was good. Service was ok!

Yelp
HORRIBLE customer service We called to order for delivery and got a "sigh and a what do you want " from the rude person who answered the phone So I proceeded to give my order and the got "hung up" on Tried calling back and no answer Your food isn't that good anyway but we figured we'd give it another try As a small business owner if I had employees like you I'd find new ones. If you are the owner that answered the phone then you deserve bad business reviews

Yelp
Wrong order was sent. Undercooked chicken and smoosh rice. Not even close to what I ordered. The rice looked so gooy I just thru it right in the trash. Disappointed since I'm trying to stay loyal. But mofonguito does way better job. Presentation of the meal, works wonders even if it's to go. Or in this case delivery.

Yelp
Yum yum in my tum tum! I love the authentic vibe and the foods were just too good!!! Service was good

Yelp
I have a love/hate relationship with this place. #1 Food is amazing! Love the food #2 Service sucks #3 Understaffed Best PR food in the city in my opinion, but the waitresses here think they have the best memories in the world and never write down your order, no matter how large it is and almost always forget something. On numerous occasions, there was only 1 waitress tending the restaurant and bussing the tables. This obviously robbed us of our server's attention to tending to our needs. The wife, kids and I drive from an hour away to dine here about every 3 months or so, and the last time, which was 2 weeks ago, the place was closed and windows covered in brown paper as if permanently closed or undergoing remodeling. Either way, there was nothing on their business website or on the internet about their closure. Their hours were normal operating hours on the internet and their website. I've been frequenting this place faithfully for years and I'm done with them at this point, even if they were to open back up. The silver lining in all this was that we discovered Ponce Restaurant on this failed trip to La Bomba and they will be getting my business from here on out.

Yelp
We came here to pick up some Jibaritos to take home and this place was poppin. They had a lot of orders ready for pick up and there were people constantly in and out of this place. Unfortunately for me, they had ran out of maduros and arroz as well. I actually made them scrape off whatever they had left of their rice onto my plate. It was honestly more than enough. The Jibaritos here are very delicious and I highly recommend you try one of these if you haven't. A steak sandwich, but instead of bread they use flattened fried plantains. It came with lettuce, tomorrow and mayonnaise and you can add American cheese for a small additional cost. The steak was cooked and seasoned perfectly. Tou can add rice for an additional $2. The rice was also delicious. And by far the best Puerto Rican rice I've had. My fellow boricuas always rave about Puerto Rican rice and how it's so good, though I haven't tried anything worth raving about until now. The service here was great despite them being very busy. They unfortunately ran out of some stuff that I wanted, but I'm glad they're busy as hell during these hard times.

Gregory A.

Yelp
Who closes their doors during the busiest time of year for remodeling. Very disappointed and will have to question my loyalty. You could remodel during January?

Yelp
Bomb ass food it's very well worth the drive from the south side of Chicago. I got my food to go but can't wait to dine in and explore more dishes

Yelp
By far the worst customer service. My wife and I put in an order using the website they provide and when we went to pick up the food they claimed they hadn't received the order and we had to show the email of our receipt. After that they agreed to make the food. At first it was fine no big deal mistakes happen but after 40 minutes of waiting for our food we asked what was taking so long and we were met with attitude as if we were impatient after waiting almost an hour for 2 jibarito dinners, fried plantains and sweet fried plantains. We finally got our food and we were missing the fried plantains so my wife nicely informed them and was met with more attitude and was told that the sweet plantains we received were the plantains. My wife is Mexican and I am Puerto Rican so I'm assuming they thought my wife didn't know the difference but I definitely do as it's something I myself make often in our home. My wife didn't want the hassle as it was clear they just didn't want to make them and we left. We tried to remain optimistic and went home to eat and the food was beyond a disappointed. The jibarito was dry and had no flavor. The meat was unseasoned, the rice was bland and even the sweet plantains were just off. It was honestly so disappointing and we all know how much it sucks when your food just isn't a hit especially after waiting so long to even receive it. Complete waste of our time and money and not worth the trip back.
google avatar

Paul O.

Yelp
Went to try it out because of the good reviews from yelp. Was underwhelmed by the food. The jibarito was pretty plain and didn't have too much flavor. Usually, you get the flavor from the mayonnaise and salt but the two jibarito I ordered was bland. I ordered online and was given my pick up time through yelp but still had to wait 20 minutes to pick up my order. When I went to pick up my food at the counter, all the employees had their face mask on their chin and barely covering their face. Not following COVID19 health guidelines. I wasn't cool with that.

Alberto G.

Yelp
it would be nice if they put that its under construction instead of open. driving from out of town just to find out it's closed.

Yelp
If I could give if 0 stars, I would!!! Horrible experience. I will never go there again!! First of all, it took forever for out waitress to take our order. There were 2 tables that arrived after us the had water, bread & has their orders taken before us! I had to ask someone else just for bread. Then when we placed our order, the waitress tells me they ran out of the item I asked for. So, I ordered something else. When the appetizers arrived they were barely luke warm & I had to remind her again about the water. As we are sitting there eating, I hear the waiter bring food to the table behind us & they ordered the SAME thing the waitress told me they were out of. That was pretty upsetting. We had a party of 5, so instead of troubling the waitress to separate the checks, I paid the whole thing & my friends were going to pay me their portion. I asked for an itemized check. The total was $101. I decided that, despite the horrible service & barely warm food, I would at least tip $9. Once I got home- (I live over an hour away mind you) I looked at the receipt & she completely cheated us!!! The waitress said therewas a party of 6 & added gratuity for $15!!!!!!! I am beyond livid. She literally got a $24 because she lied!!! I WILL NEVER GO HERE AGAIN. Bad service, mediocre food & the staff obviously lacks integrity!!!

Yelp
I've been wanting to visit Puerto Rico for some time now - it's so convenient, you don't even need a passport. But with the hurricane and infrastructure that needs to be rebuilt, I guess I'll have to wait a year or two. So how Can I satisfy my craving for Puerto Rican food?!? I would say La Bomba is a great option amongst many in Chicago. Kind service, byob, authentic neighborhood, welcoming interior with flatscreens for football and really good jibarito sandwiches - what more can one ask for!?! Just a little background, a Jibaro is someone that works the land and in the old days, they needed a way to serve hot food to the Jibaros (workers). So they decided to flatten plantains and deep fry them onsite and that's how the jibarito sandwich was born. Similarly, Empanadas were also created because it was easier to eat while doing your outdoor work - but we'll save that for a different review. So LaBomba has perhaps the best or second best jibarito that I've had. The plantain is very crisp and with the steak, lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo with garlic on top combination - wow, that is one incredible bite!!! They also have an appetizer (a plantain with beef and cheese on top), that is so so good. The other deep fried items are just fine with hot sauce. Finally, I can hardly wait to have a jibarito in San Juan so I can compare and contrast.

Yelp
If I could I would rate with no stars. It was my first time catering with them for thanksgiving. I was told to order 2 days ahead and to add a specific time to pick up and the order had to be pay in full before placing it. I place my order on Nov 21 to be able to pick up on Nov 24 at 2pm. I called on the 24 at 1:30pm to confirm if my order would be ready at the correct time then I was informed that my order was late and that I could pick up at 3pm. So I headed to the store by the time they said and was told it was going to be another hour to be able to get my order. There was so many people inside and outside really mad having the same problem. The lady in the front kept saying the person who place orders did a mistake. Once I received my order at 4pm and got home I open my order of rice and the rice was raw. They didn't even bother to check if the order was cook properly. I'm pretty sure a lot of people got their order raw or wrong. I try to call the store to complain they had disconnected their phone line. Super unprofessional I would never order from them ever again.

Yelp
One of my Puerto Rican co-workers says this is one of his favorite restaurants, especially for jibarritos. So one day at work I ordered a bunch of stuff on grubhub, and to my disappointment I have a different feelings then my co worker. First the Steak jibarrito, it came with plenty of meat although a little too dry for my taste but not bad. It kind of goes down hill from there. The texture and flavor of the tamale wand Alcapurria (banana dumpling) creeped me out. The meat pie and relleno de papa was underseasoned. The guava puff pastry tasted old. But for me the biggest disappointment was the maduros. The plantain was not cooked all the way through so it was hard and very bitter. Maybe I got the wrong things here, or maybe takeout is a not the same as dining in. But for me La Bomba was a let down, sorry Nelson.
google avatar

Luis G.

Yelp
Ordered take out with my friend from here. We had two jibaritos de bistec and rice with beans. Also drank jugo de parcha. The portion size is more than enough and two people can easily eat from one individual order (we had two). The taste is amazing and reminded me of a home cooked meal (I'm from the Caribbean just for context). Will definitely eat here again during my next visit.
google avatar

Mel L.

Yelp
La Bomba is near the corner street and only have (what I can tell) street parking. The inside is a nice dim sum restaurant with art covering the walls. They have food ready in the hot case when you walk in or you can go to the back seating area to eat in. The breaded shrimp with tostones - fried plantain were good and so was the sauce that comes along with. The bread and butter that is brought to the table is a large amount and I would suggest serving a smaller portion. I was stuffed after the bread serving. Nonetheless, I like it here, no real complaints and suggest anyone tries La bomba out.

Yelp
Overall very average food and nothing very exciting. Might be good for a quick n pickup in the lobby but not worth the full sit down dining experience.
google avatar

Linda S.

Yelp
The staff are extremely friendly and the food is affordable. We squeezed in about 15 minutes before closing and were able to get an order to go. Everything I tasted fell somewhere in the pretty good to good range. We had the pastel, pastelito, steak jibarito, and a side of maduros. Again, it was good and I'd definitely keep them in mind when in the area.

Yelp

Yelp
I went to eat there today. I was very disappointed with the food. Ordered mofongo and chicharrones de pollo. Meat was flavorless, caldo was cold. We also ordered alcapurria de yuca, that was good, relleno de papa it also needed flavor. I was visiting from out of town. I would not recommend or plan on returning there. Bathroom needed toilet paper and hand soap. Trash can was full of paper. I told one of the employees about the bathroom, said she would take care of it, but didn't since she was the only waitress working there. At the time to pay, we told the manager and he gave us a discount.

Yelp
Really solid Puerto Rican food that makes my belly smile. I finally tried La Bomba this week after seeing it for quite awhile. I walked in to place a carryout order and the place was poppin'. It's def a neighborhood favorite packed full of locals dining eat & picking things up to go. I placed my order and 20 minutes later rolled out with my grub. The sweet smell instantly seeped into my nostrils and my mouth started watering in anticipation. The banana dumpling is $1.50 and comes packed with said fruit and other goodness. What that other goodness is I don't know but it was tasty and very filling. I had a side order of fried plantains for $1.50. Nomnomnomz. I just love plantains and this was a good portion for such a cheap price. I also dined on the breaded steak sandwich for $4.95 and was surprised it came on plantain 'buns' instead of actual bread. This was amazing for this trying-to-stay-carb-free-gal but was a bit of a plantain overload at that point. Ahhhh, who am I kidding?! I love those mutated (savory, cooked) bananas. The smells were what really got me at La Bomba. So appetizing and truly saliva inducing in my boca. Loved the food, I'll be back, plus bonus points for them being on Spring Rewards.

Yelp
This was disappointing to open Usually there is a banana leaf or the paper so they dont stick like these did, shoot for the price you guys charged i expected better. I guess i have to find another restaurant that does them right

Yelp
I had came in here today and wow, the food is amazing I got the chicken empanisado with white rice and beans and omg I loved it...I see a lot of reviews talking down to this place but I've been coming here for years and it's just how I remember it everytime I step in. The waitress was very nice and made sure we enjoyed our food. These reviews are not false but it's as easy as just talking to the waitress to make your order right!

Yelp
I thot i had written a review for this restaurant, but can't recall. And bc I can't recall, I'm writing (possibly again!) . I'm from Danville IL. As far as I'm concerned, the only place I've experienced truly authentic Puerto Rican food is in Chicago! It was around Christmas time, and we were going up to visit our son there, and a friend who had frequented LA BOMBA in her college days highly recommended it. Because we were going there specifically to try them out, I called to verify their hours. Their pamphlet said they were open on that day, however they've since changed their schedule & have forgotten to update their pamphlet! REGARDLESS, I was told on the phone that altho they were actually Closed to the public that day, they would be in/there filling Orders for customers. When I expressed my situation that we seldom go Chicago & wanted to try their establishment because of the recommendation, and because they were supposedly open ,.. they told me they'd be there till a certain hour, and if we got there before that hour we'd be allowed to dine, seeing how we were coming from 3 hrs away just to dine there! We hurry there, and were told that we couldn't dine in bc they were closed to the public that day and done for the day anyway! I told them I had called that morning & was told if I got there by a certain time we'd be served . It was before that time! So I asked to talk with the person who took my call that morning, and he intervened for us! He said we'd have to choose from the food that they had prepared and had on hand. We said "No problem!" They prepared a table for us, and treated us so nicely & respectfully & friendly, even though by now we were keeping them overtime, since they had finished early! I CAN'T say enough good about the food & the help! They were both fabulous!! Will go there again in a heart beat, next time I'm in Chicago. So don't judge this book by it's cover, it's great!!

Yelp
Pros: - WOW. So much flavor! - The lechon mixta is AMAZING. Dip it in the free bean soup side. Eat with the rice side - The bean soup and mixed rice sides are so flavorful. I could eat a bucketful Cons: - Avoid the desserts. They taste like cardboard. The bread pudding tastes so bad... like playdough!

Yelp
When having a conversation with your Uber driver and he shares how he moved to Chicago from Puerto Rico your next logical question for him is "where's the best place in town you've found for Puerto Rican food?" When he tells you it's La Bomba, you go to La Bomba and end up being really glad you asked. For starters, their Steak Jibarito came out pipping hot with fresh garlic spread on top. The cheese was perfectly melted, the steak meat was tender and a good portion, and the plantains had a nice crispy exterior. It's a damn good sandwich and one I now crave and have been back for and will return to again. I recommend getting their side of rice to go with it. It's got great flavor and texture. They also have a ton of other Puerto Rican dishes including Alcapurria (banana dumpling) which I suggest ordering as well as some tasty stews. I'd be careful with their Pinchos (pork kabobs) however, the one I got was super dry. Service was great both times too. I dined in the first time and our server was super attentive and gave great recommendations. The dining area of the restaurant is a tad too dim for my liking, especially for lunch time, but it's fine. The second time I did carry out and the woman who checked me out was so sweet. A great spot in town to get your Puerto Rican fix.

Yelp
The line wait was so unorganized and long... Best to call ANY order in early. Great food!

Yelp
La Bomba is always a hit! They're most often busy, but will still attend to you the best way they can and it's usually fast . I've never had a problem with them or their food. As a true Puerto Rican I really enjoy this restaurant and can't wait to come eat again! If you're in the city definitely check out La Bomba

Yelp
Without a doubt the worst experience ever. Ten minutes to wait for a waitress. Once ordered people moved in and out and were served with enthusiasm while leaving us with no water. People sat down next to us got their meals ate them and left while we still waited for ours. After questioning they said that they ran out of rice. But my order was the same as the fellow that are at the next table. The big difference is that we were white and all other customers were hispanic.

Yelp
Really wanted to like this place, especially after so many people recommended it. They give quantity, just lack quality and taste. Here's what I got: Steak Jibarito (everything on it. The plantain was nice and soft, just no significant flavor. I ended up eating the meat and one side of the plantain with the cheese bc it was so bland: 2/10 Stuffed potato ball: 5/10 Pastillo (usually only ground meat, but this one had potatoes in it. Just a spoon or so of stuffing the rest was all shell) : 3/10

Yelp
I've been coming here for years. I mean my aunt had her wedding reception catered by them years ago and they still come back. The prices are very good and so are the dishes. Some may argue that it's all fried food, but if you are looking at their fried food section and order from there, guess what? That's what you'll get. Fried food. Yes, our culture does have a reputation for frying a lot of our foods, but no one seems to see the broilded, baked, slow cooked foods that make up our wonderful carribean cuisine. Check this place out if your looking for traditional cooking and a slice of islands hospitality.

Yelp
Excellent Puerto Rican food. I was feeling a little unwell and needed something comforting, and asked a friend to order me a Caldo de Camarones. I got mine with rice, and it was the PERFECT COMFORT FOOD!!! It was just delicious and perfect and hit the spot! I also ordered the tostones and the flan which were absolutely amazing as well. Especially the flan, it's a small portion but well worth the money!

Yelp
My love affair with La Bomba all started with their food truck and the Belmont & Central festival and the best alcapurria I have ever had! Since then I have stopped in to the front area of their restaurant for a quick bite quite a few times and I have never been disappointed. I love their alcapurrias, papa rellenos, pastelillos (especially the chicken), and their steak jibaritos. Everything is tastes fantastic, is perfectly seasoned, and is affordable. If you order ahead of time, you can just grab and go easily. Now... as for eating in. I have eaten in twice, and the first time was an enjoyable experience. The waitstaff was nice, and the food came out quickly and just as ordered. The second time I had finally dragged my husband here, and the waitress that took care of us didn't write any of our order down, which is fine if you can get it right. Unfortunately my husband's sandwich was wrong. The waitress took it back, and returned 15 minutes later with the order wrong again. We ordered alcapurrias de plantain, and she brought us yuca alcapurrias. We ordered chicken pastelillos, and she brought us beef. My husband's second sandwich didn't come out until almost 40 minutes after he placed the order, and by that time we were about ready to go. Now he refuses to dine in here again, which sucks because I love the food. That being said, I will always be a patron and will not let one bad dine in experience deprive me of the deliciousness that La Bomba serves. The only thing I recommend is that the owner requires the waitstaff to write down the orders if they are new.
