The 8 Best Dishes We Tried In April

"Pupusa combo platter Come for the pupusas, stay for the platos tipícos. The pupusa de pollo is their number one option, but you can score big time and get their combo platter that includes that and their Salvadoran-style carne asada (made with house rub and chimol, a spicy tomato salsa) and sweet corn or chicken and olive tamal - just to make sure you’re not missing out. It’s just south of the Cloisters, so you could snag a pupusa to go while you check out the sites. But you’ll probably be too distracted by the fluffy corn delight you have in your hands to notice much else." - team infatuation

Google
Amazing food! Although I ordered takeout this restaurant serves the best chips with guac hands down in all of NYC! the churrasco steak was 4/5 just because I was expecting a different taste but the steak was juicy nevertheless the rice and beans tasted really good. Other reviews are probably fake because my food tasted just fine I have nothing bad to say concerning this resteraunt definitely be ordering delivery again sometime soon

Google
This is a rare find: a genuine, small, family-run restaurant in NYC. If you want authentic Salvadoran and Latin American food, this is the place to go. I had shrimp ceviches, a fantastic, juicy, and cool lunch on a hot summer day; my friends got pupusas and a sausage and rice breakfast. The price is also extremely affordable. Service was warm, fast, and friendly. It doesn't have the posh appearance of a high-end restaurant, but it makes you feel like you're in an old-school New York establishment instead. Recommend!

Google
Amazing food and service! We chose to have Thanksgiving dinner here and escape the crowds of downtown NYC. The pupusas, steak, caldo, everything was delicious!!!

Dennis Carrasco

Google
The food is 5 stars so they will see me again. However the attitude is crazy! I was constantly ignored even when walking while staring at the owner and saying “have a good night”. Needless to say come for the food not the ambiance.

Liz B

Google
Humble restaurant with excellent food quality. They carry several Aguas flavors. They have a large variety of typical plates from el Salvador with excellent customer services. I have visited this establishment a few times and all the waiters have been polite. The food takes time since they prepare it as ordered but the wait has always been worth it. The establishment is small but offers outside seating. Could offer cleaner tables at times but they won't feel offended if you request for it to be cleaned again. They are usually packed inside.

Corey Cherrington

Google
Some of the food items were fantastic and deserve a 5. However, 2 of the three food items on my combo plate were burnt or overcooked, and the service was not good. We sat very close to where the kitchen was, so the staff passed us very often. Many times when they walked by they did not ask us if we needed anything and did not notice us trying to get their attention several times. We probably say at our table for more than 15 minutes with both of our waters run out because if this. Ultimately, my husband had to go up to the hostess/register to ask for refills on water. I dont think this should ever be the case in a sit-diwn restaurant.

Google
Sooo delicious! I always order the frijol y queso papusas and they are always great. They come with some coleslaw which I don’t believe is made in house but is still yummy. Have also tried the rice and beans which is great.

Google
Probably the best pupusas ive ever had. Great and fast service and not a bad place to sit and eat. Favorite pupusas is their revueltas
google avatar

Yelp
This place is so delicious! Great food and service. My favorite thing to order is their combo #7. It's a half order of steak, one pupusa, and one tamale of your choice. We order Togo most of the time but they have a nice sized dining area. Honestly my favorite restaurant in walking distance of our neighborhood.
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Stopped here for some breakfast on the way to the Met Cloisters and were very impressed! The pupusas were delicious! Perfect ratio of masa to filling. We tried two different kinds: spinach and bean + cheese. The curtido (slaw) added a brightness to the earthy pupusas that had us cleaning our plates. Looking forward to visiting again next time I'm in the area.

Yelp
Oh my god.. SO SO GOOD!! Stopped in after visiting fort trion park on a Saturday afternoon. Inside is cozy and welcoming. Definitely a bit busy and there only seemed to be one designated server so service was a bit slow but it was so worth it for the food.... Usually I'd knock a start down for service but it was that good. Super reasonably priced and absolutely delish-- I got a lunch combo with a tamale, pupusas, and steak. Very generous portions. I wish I lived closer!

Yelp
Their menu keeps me coming back, and I enjoy exploring the nearby streets. The restaurant offers remarkable value. La Cabana Salvadoreña outperforms most restaurants I know. Their staff showed genuine care and welcoming attitudes. I anticipate my next visit.
google avatar

Jennie R.

Yelp
I'm having a hard time staying calm about how good this tastes. He had a great attitude and made our first time visit to the La Cabana Salvadoreña totally enjoyable. This spot shows attention to environmental details. The dishes need no introduction. I point food lovers to this place.
google avatar

Gloria X.

Yelp
The people here are very nice. You feel right at home. I got the lunch special which was extremely affordable - where else can you get steak for less than $20? The beef was very tasty, as was the corn tamal! The pupusa was supposed to be pork but the filling kind of tasted like nothing. The texture of the pupusa was great tho!
google avatar

Michael F.

Yelp
Such a great restaurant. Homey and comforting diner energy, everyone's friendly, food is undefeated. Both corn and chicken tamales are fantastic

Marlene S.

Yelp
Every dish is authentic to El Salvador and Central America itself.

Yelp
This is my most valuable find of the Week. Maybe even of the Month. Now don't get me wrong, this place isn't fancy, high class nor expensive but it sure is clean, casual, inexpensive and delicious. They have an assortment of foods ranging from their signature pupusas, tamales, tacos and meat and vegetable combos. They also offer fresh juices and other beverages. There really is something for everyone. The decor is simple but solid. There are about 10 tables for dining in, and what used to be an outdoor eating area could hold plenty more. I'm unsure if the outdoor seating is still in use. The bathrooms are tiny but very clean and stocked as is the rest of the place. They recently added a bar area which is separate from the restaurant so be sure to check out the festivities in the evenings and report back. Nice spot for lunch or if you're looking to try new cuisine.

Yelp
This hole in the wall el Salvadoreña place offers papusas, combo plates and breakfasts. One of my go tos is the el Salvadoreña combo with steak, a chicken Papusa and a sweet corn tamale for $12. It feels family run and service is carribean style relaxed. Beer happy hour is around $5. Close to the 191 train in wash heights.

Yelp
First time trying Salvadoran food! I ordered their beef soup and a mixed pupusa (pork and cheese). Both were extremely flavorful. The environment was cozy and the restaurant was clean. Would definitely recommend and go again!

Yelp
thank you to my dear friend, wanda , for taking me to try salvadorean food for the first timeit was LIFE CHANGING and while this was my first, it's definitely not going to be my last! i've always heard of pupusas but never had the chance to go prior to this visit, BUT IDK WHERE I WAS BC THESE WERE SO BOMB the restaurant itself was a quaint mom-and-pop store with the sweetest workers willing to give recommendations and accommodate our needswith a wide range of delicious salvadorean classics and surprisingly affordable prices, they truly give you a bang for your buck -- -- -- pictured: " 3 ingredient pupusa ($3.00 each) //filled with pork, cheese, and beans, each pupusa was a pocket of heaventhey also came with a slaw and salsa which gave each bite a refreshing touch! " grilled steak dinner plate ($16.00) // first off, the steak was seasoned to perfection and was huge given the priceit also came with a generous side salad, pico de gallo, and crispy plantains which were divine " yuca frita con chicharrón ($10.00) // this was my first time trying this AND I WAS SO SOLD‍the fried yuca reminded me of a potato wedge but lighter, airier, and slightly crumblier in the best way possible all with a crispy exterior! the chicharrón was also incredibly crispy and juicy making it so delicious! " horchata ($3.00) // unlike the mexican horchata i was used to with the primary notes of cinnamon and rice milk, this salvadorean horchata (horchata de morro) was very different in taste which I actually really enjoyed. using a different combination of spices and seeds from the morro fruit, the drink itself was nuttier and deep in flavor which i really loved! -- -- -- overall i truly loved my experience here and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for some amazing salvadorean food!

Yelp
Generally, the food is good. I recently ordered from Uber Eats and they left out 1 of the 2 main dishes we ordered. I could not rate them on Uber Eats, so I want to let others know BE CAREFUL ORDERING DELIVERY FROM THEM. It hurts me to write this because the food can be good. But their service is sub-stanadard
google avatar

Luz M.

Yelp
I had the grilled steak tamale and papusa meal #7. A little bit of everything. I loved it
google avatar

Yunjia L.

Yelp
Incredible food and friendly service! I live here and have been coming for 2 years, never had a menu item I didn't like. Highly recommend the pupusas and anything with shrimp

Lizzy V.

Yelp
I pretty consistently come here for the pupusas, which are exquisite. I could drown in the slaw. Refried beans also top notch. Steak, corn tamale, lemonade all good too. Love this place.
google avatar

Giacomo C.

Yelp
Pupusas are still very solid, here. Never had anything else, but don't have much of a reason, because I pretty much head here to get my pupusas fix. Very yummy. Get those with everything in it (the ones with pork, beans and cheese). Recommended.

Yelp
Worst service in Washington Heights. Went in for dinner March 26 with family. A couple other diners were there. Waited 10-15 mins for menus. After another 15 mins with no service I went to counter to tell them we'd like to order. Meanwhile we watched take-out customers come in and place orders. Another 10 minutes later we left. They didn't care and didn't even say "Sorry." I've eaten there several times in the past & liked the food. I'll never go back and will warn friends & neighbors.
google avatar

Peter D.

Yelp
What do you say when your friends bring you pupusas from all the way uptown? "Thank you," of course. Who raised you anyway? What do you DO when your friends bring you pupusas from the Heights? You throw them in a pan, because they are a little bit cold (it's far from Brooklyn), and then you rejoice that you get to eat such an affordable, delicious snack. Pair it with the bag of vinegary slaw/salad (seriously, they give it to you in a plastic bag), and it's a solid meal. If you have to choose, cheese pupusa beats chicken pupusa in my very limited experience with La Cabana Salvadoreña.
google avatar

Shantel A.

Yelp
I've always seen this small restaurant but never went in. Today my boss and I went on lunch since we were in the area. She's told me about this pupusa place but never told me the name, and of course it's this one. The restaurant is small and can tell is family operated which i love. The food and horchata reminded of my family in Nicaragua and El Salvador. The pupusa was pretty good I've definitely had better but wasn't underwhelming either and the rice and beans were bomb ! The rice was nice and soft just how I like and the beans were perfect and not overcooked. Would def come back again!
google avatar

Jackie S.

Yelp
This is another one of my "I love living in a city where I can eat food from around the world" reviews. Authentic El Salvadoran eats right in Manhattan! Yaaaasssss! I will preface this by saying you don't come here for the service. It's a complete dive, not particularly nice, food takes forever, but man is it good...AND CHEAP! My friends live in the area and are regulars so when I finally made my way uptown this is where we went for some papusas, which are like their version of arepas. Vegetarian papusas are $2, pork, beef, or chicken ones are a whopping $2.50. Unreal. Get the fried plantains too, they're bomb. You also get pickled cabbage as a complementary side as well as a jalapeño salad. Three of us ate for $20 total!
google avatar

Jeannette N.

Yelp
Stoked to have found authentic Salvadorean horchata! It's darker in color and a bit chalkier than the Mexican version -- take my word for it though, it's delicious. The pupusas revueltas (pork and cheese) were yummy and I love that it comes with what seems like a vat of salsa and curtido. As with most Salvadorean restaurants, the vibe is casual, TV is on, and everyone is having a good time getting their grub on.
google avatar

Cathy Z.

Yelp
Omg! I Lowkey had no idea what I was ordering since I've never had a pupusa before or El Salvadorian food but I needed some great steak and I got great steak. Ordered a beans and cheese pupusa as a side and it was delicious, comes with slaw and salsa as well. Everything was packaged very well and the food was kept at a good texture (nothing was mushy, too dry). Hoping to stop by the restaurant sometime for a sit down meal once it's safer!
google avatar

Manny R.

Yelp
I've been to many Pupusa spots around the world. This place has the best hands down! They have an amazing curtido that I can't find anywhere else. The staff are great and sexy.
google avatar

Nancy P.

Yelp
This is a most go place to get some yummy and authentic salvadorian food. the place is very nice and cozy, super friendly employees. also is Kids friendly in case you wondered. I will definitely recommend this to everyone who is in the area of Washington heights and needs a good place to eat
google avatar

Doctora F.

Yelp
First time having Salvadoran food and it was off the charts. The tamal and pupusas were fantastic as well as the tender pepper steak. Definitely recommend and will return.
google avatar

Olga F.

Yelp
The pupusa--- sooo good! Who ever their pupusa making lady is, keep her. The size was perfect the amount of filling perfect and not greasy!!! this place did not disappoint. definitely going back!
google avatar

Claudyne V.

Yelp
I've tried ordering from them several times. Although the food is tasty, the service is AWFUL. I waited for an order for pick-up, came home and found they messed up my order, went back and was given a hard time to obtain a refund. Staff didn't even apologize. Prepare for long waits and being treated badly if you're not a native Spanish speaker.
google avatar

Cali S.

Yelp
Friendly service, reasonable prices. I had the plato típico, everything was delicious. Will def be back. Dined at their outdoor space l. With all the ongoing health concerns, pleased to learn they offer free delivery. Contact them directly to bypass the pesky fees charged by apps.
google avatar

Yelp
The prices of the food is great and affordable for Washington Heights but the flavors and quality is average. If you're not worried about that though...you can have a filling meal and be stuffed. I wanted to order Enchiladas but they didn't have any that day. The pupusas were $2-$2.50 each. It comes with salad and tomato sauce to put on top. I added plenty of Tabasco to give them a little spicy kick. I ordered 1 Revueltas - Chicharron con queso (Mixed pork and cheese) pupusa and 1 Con Todo - Frijol, Chicharron y queso (Everything - beans, pork, and cheese) pupusa. I was expecting the pupusas to feel fresh, piping hot and crispy. Instead, I was a little disappointed with them served mildly warm. The fillings inside the pupusas were lacking and tasted flavorless. I thought the Morir Sonando ($4) shake was a little watery. It had more orange juice flavor than milk/vanilla flavor that I'd prefer. The Nuegados con Chilate (Fried Yuca Dumplings) for $6.50 were good! They were fried and soft on the inside. The syrup to dip in on the plate was sweet. This dish came with a Rice Flour drink which wasn't all that appetizing. The Tamale de Elote (Sweet Corn Tamale) for $2.50 was simple and delicious. It tasted sweet with sour cream to dip in. The restaurant has been here since 1995. Its neat and clean with a few El Salvadorean things hanging on the wall. When you walk in, there's random South American currencies hanging behind their counter. There's a jukebox and on one side it's a golden mirror wall reflecting the room. I'll be trying other restaurants in hope of better pupusas!
google avatar

Aylin C.

Yelp
Delicious authentic saldadorean food. I highly recommend. The prices are very fair as well.
google avatar

Sonachi A.

Yelp
In this photo you will find my order of Ceviche with shrimp and one pupusa with cheese. My friend ordered a fried taco and one pupusa as well. We spent time at a park and decided to come here for cheap and tasty pupusas!! These prices are UNREAL. I wish the rest of NYC followed suit. Pupusas were $2.50-$3.00. And they were soooo good and yummy. The ceviche was JUST what I needed. Something light and refreshing. I should have asked for tortilla chips on the side. Treat yourself and check this place out!!
google avatar

Laurel C.

Yelp
I've lived across the street from this restaurant for almost 20 years, and had never been there until my boyfriend suggested we try it. Neither of us knew what a pupusa was and we were curious to find out, though the restaurant didn't look like anything special on the outside. We went to eat an early dinner there and were the only ones in the place. We were greeted by a little girl and her mom who turned out to be our waitress. She recommended we try the pork, cheese and bean pupusas; we also ordered a lunch special of tostones, salad and grilled chicken, a corn tamale and a limonata. The pupusas came with a tomato based sauce and spicy coleslaw and the tamale came with sour cream. Honestly - it was the best meal I've had in the neighborhood in a very long time. The chicken was well seasoned and tender, the tamale was sweet and perfect with the sour cream, and the pupusas were like eating a savory pancake. It was so good that we went back the next day and got palomilla steak, maduros and beans, and more pupusas. Service was friendly and we didn't have any issues with it being slow as mentioned in other reviews; however we went there at an off hour so that could play a role. We also felt that the food they served left a homemade, satisfying and warm feeling that went beyond a typical restaurant experience. As if it was made with extra love and care. Highly recommend this place! Don't judge it by its outward appearance; truly a gem in the Heights.
google avatar

Peter G.

Yelp
Delicious, affordable comidas! Seems authentic, although having never been to El Salvador, I can't say for sure. Family run, friendly, and well worth a visit if you're in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Greg C.

Yelp
While it is about a 15-20min walk from Columbia's medical school campus, La Cabana Salvadorena is definitely worth it even if you're not familiar with Salvadorian cuisine like myself. They have a large seating area with two sides so you won't have to worry about waiting to get seated My favorite part of my meal was their plantains, which had the perfect sweetness to them. I also highly recommend their beef enchiladas and tamales. Overall great quality food and offered at a relatively cheap price.
google avatar

Tiara L.

Yelp
So a friend of mine and I decided to do the broad city tik tok challenge and walk all of Manhattan from 225th st down to battery park. Needless to say we didn't get very far and ended up chilling at Fort Tyron Park. At the back this lady recommended La Cabana Salvadorena as an authentic Salvadorian place that you can only get in InWood. So we came to check it out and she was right! We ordered the combo plate that is steak, a tamale of your choice and a papusa of your choice. All of this for only $12! We also had a papaya milkshake and it was delicious! Will definently trek back up here just for the food because it's worth it. Everything was fresh and homemade! Lastly they were really nice to let me have my dog in the outside shelter seating area!
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
Awesome Pupusas and Quesadilla (Sweet Cheese Pound Cake) Their Horchata and Chan (Red Lemonade with Chia Seeds) drinks are also yummy! For breakfast we usually order Combo # 8: Casamiento (Rice & Beans) Scrambled Eggs, Grilled Sausage, Sweet Plantains, side of Sour Cream and tortillas. #delicious
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised at how good it was. I say that because the restaurant is not flashy, it's something I've passed by on a regular basis that I've never paid attention to. Order the pupusas and tamales, you can't go wrong. My wife and I will definitely come back here again.
google avatar

Mr Carlos M. R.

Yelp
The people who you will inevitably come across in this outstanding yet intimate restaurant and their on point - authentic menu options straight out of the kitchens of El Salvador will not disappoint you. Best of all, you will not go broke in this Central American getaway!
google avatar

Joy G.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing dirt-cheap Salvadoran food. I've never had a pupusa before but I suppose they're the Salvadoran version of dumplings and pirerogies: fried flattened dough stuffed with meats and cheeses. Ask for some hot sauce and curtido (pickled carrots and cabbage), and just slather it on - the pupusa itself is pretty greasy, so the crunchy veggies and salsa give a refreshing kick. I loved everything we tried, but two things in particular grabbed my heart: the aforementioned mixed pupusa and the corn tamale with sour cream. I am the biggest hater of sour cream in the world, but mixed together with the corn tamale - mildly sweet perfection. I could have eaten two more of the tamales by themselves. Other less-adored favorites included the beef enchilada, which came on top of a fried, flattened tortilla. I tried delicately sawing off smaller pieces with a fork and knife, and ended up just tearing off hunks with my teeth. I also ordered a small chicken soup despite the 90 degree weather outside. Due to stuffing my face with all the other delicious foods around me, I only managed to eat the root veggies in the soup and none of the chicken and accompanying rice, but packed it up to go and mentally winced each time my boyfriend swung the bag a little too high. Pupusas are now $2 each. A drink, a small soup, two pupusas, a corn tamale, and a combo platter of taco, enchilada, and steak were ... $30. Craziness. NEXT TIME: gimme all the corn tamales

Yelp
I'm not sure why this place doesn't have 5 stars! Their steak is to die for and every other thing in the menu is spectacular. It's authentic and comfortable. I love coming here with my family. Great, nice staff. Amazing owner and the prices are amazing! Even in weekdays i get the lunch special. Super worth it! One of my favorite restaurants hands down.

Bartenderzzz ..

Yelp
I heard the food is good but I guess we'll never find out since they never have delivery guys. 3 different times. Shame.
google avatar

John D.

Yelp
I never had pupusas before or any Salvadoran food. So I thought today I'd find a Salvadoran restaurant and order some. I came in and ordered three Pupusas. A chicken/cheese, Cheese/broccoli, and a bean/pork/cheese. To compliment, I ordered a side of fried sweet plantains. The food was good but I really didn't have much to compare it to. The service was quite slow and I'm pretty sure my order was forgotten about. I definitely will try again and will venture in trying other things off their menu. Perhaps this review will be updated.
google avatar

Yoselyn F.

Yelp
This place has an amazing lunch special! the pupusas are delicious. The meats were amazing! this was pre- veggie life for me. The food is perfectly seasoned and the portions were great. I tried a cheese pupusa, a pork and soup. I then had the shrimp salad. Everything was yummy. Service was slow, but only because I was in a rush. Can't wait to go back for GF options and a nice, and calm, lunch.

Yelp
La Cabana is unassuming - two separate entrances for a bar area and the diner-like restaurant. Not too many options in the area in regards to sit-down food (unless you want bar food), so decided to give it a shot. Have to order at the counter with a large menu to peruse through. Got the Salvadorian Combo ($10), a Horchata ($2), and a Suprema beer ($4). The combo is a large plate of a flattened grilled steak, a papusa (spinach and cheese), and a tamale (chicken). The meal is extremely hefty, the papusa had gooey melted cheese that balanced out with the spinach. The steak is surprisingly juicy and well seasoned. Tamale is okay, lacking a bit of flavor, though goes well with hot sauce. Also got to try the guacamole and chips ($4) - a little salty but served with warm chips; solid starter. Shared some fried sweet plantains ($2) towards the end, rich and drenched in oil, couldn't possibly finish. Food comes out here fairly quickly and was surprised they took cards. Overall a good meal that gets you a lot of value.
google avatar

Aaron R.

Yelp
Absolutely perfect pupusas and enchiladas. Great value for the money. Gem of the neighborhood. I haven't eaten in but the place has always been lively. Staff is super friendly and they serve beer. I will say: don't hesitate to include this place in your take out rotation. I don't have a favorite pupusa because they're all excellent. They package everything very nicely. I always end up with a bit extra curtido, which is a plus.
google avatar

Lei M.

Yelp
Their food are very healthy, authentic, good portion, and good priced! Horchata drink is interesting. Just feel very chilled dining here :)
google avatar

Erika A.

Yelp
Since moving to NYC I tried finding a Salvadoran restaurant with GOOD food. La Cabaña Salvadoreña met all my expectations! Pupusas are well stuffed, not that 90% tortilla 10% filling style. I also ordered yucca with chicharrón and OMG FRESH food! Chicharrón was juicy and the yucca amazing! We were also craving a quesadilla and again fresh bread! All I can say is good food, great taste, and good quality. Delivery was also very fast!

Yelp
I wish i found this place sooner. Wow i love the food. The steak has so much flavor and the pupusas are to die for. The prices are amazing for the quantity and quality of the food. The soup of res is a must try. Very delicious and healthy. However, the service is horrible. Although the waitress was nice she messed up a few times. She even forgot to place my dad's order and he received the food when i was already done with mine . She forgot to bring things with our order a few times. The restaraunt wasn't even full with many people. The place has a lot of seats and even a machine to select your own music. They do not play the music obnoxiously loud either. I would definitely return to try more dishes.
