"Located right on Broadway just south of The Cloisters in Hudson Heights, this is perhaps the city’s most ambitious restaurant devoted to Central American cuisine. Wooden tables, exposed beams, art-lined walls, floor-to-ceiling mirrors and a full bar fill a pair of handsome storefronts trimmed with red roof tiles. The pupusa list reveals the restaurant’s riches: a dozen stuffed flatbreads, from standards like cheese and pickled loroco flowers, beans and cheese, and chicken to less common spinach-and-cheese and broccoli-and-cheese versions, and even a range made with rice flour rather than maize. Though the menu includes pricier seafood, the biggest strength is the Salvadoran combo platters — one comes with a pupusa of your choice served with its slaw-like curtido, a banana-leaf–wrapped tamale studded with olives, carrots and chicken, and a nicely grilled half-steak large enough for almost anyone. Other offerings include Salvadoran enchiladas (similar to Mexican tostadas), Salvadoran tacos (like Mexican flautas), and sweet tamales stuffed with corn kernels and served with sour cream." - Robert Sietsema
