The Mission native who introduced me to La Corneta sixteen years ago has long since moved to Vacaville. I had visited only a few times between that original 2008 group dinner and 2022, and then my flat burned down in early 2023, and I didn't have a real place to live in San Francisco until fate smiled upon my roommate and me in May 2023, when we snagged a place in the Mission a few blocks from La Corneta. Since then, I've been a dozen times, maybe more.
The food is still excellent. The ingredients are fresh, and when I call in my order, it's always waiting when I arrive, and when I get back to my apartment, the order is always correct. (More than I can say for El Farolito.) They have more vegetarian options than I remember, but not as many as I want. But it's consistent.
My roommate scoffs at La Corneta's high prices (for what it is), but I'll take supporting this lovely local chain and its friendly workers over the cheap-but-you-get-what-you-pay-for El Faro-El Farolito San Francisco empire any day. And it's not as expensive as some other places that are even closer to my apartment.
I wanted to raise the rating to five stars, but while nighttime meals might be enjoyable here (if there's not a soccer game on TV), it's really really really hectic and loud during the day. It's not annoying when you're waiting for your food, but I like to sit and savor my food and sometimes to read while I eat, and I just can't imagine putting up with the noise here. And again, if there's a soccer game on, forget it. They're remodeling their bar area, so maybe I'll have to re-review soon. My four-star rating remains.
Here's to many more La Corneta super vegetarian tostadas eaten in the peace and quiet of my new building.
