Under-the-Radar New Restaurants to Check Out in Los Angeles - Eater LA

"Swing into La ‘Croque for well-made French sandwiches and pastries from owner Claudette Pentz. She flipped her beloved restaurant, Happy Cow Kitchen, into the weekends-only shop selling a slate of sandwiches priced under $15. The signature croque-monsieur has ham and Gruyere on sourdough toast, while the “carpretzel” comes with tomatoes, olive oil, pesto, and sheep’s milk cheese on a pretzel roll." - Cathy Chaplin

Brand New Eateries to Check Out in Los Angeles - Eater LA

"Croque, a concept dedicated to croque monsieur from Romuald Guiot and Aline Parolin, is operating from a K-town cloud kitchen through the pandemic. The classic croque comes with ham, Swiss cheese, and a béchamel sauce, while the vegan croque includes charcoal bread, tofu, vegan mozzarella, and a vegan béchamel sauce." - Cathy Chaplin

I had the Waldorf Salad sandwich it was tish old school yummy. It came on a croissant it was alittle crispy. They have bread choses that look amazing and the service was great. They also have desserts. TRY😋

Cute, cozy spot with a curated menu of sandwiches and an intriguing bakery case. I had the Waldorf sandwich. Usually not a fan of croissant sandwiches because I kinda feel croissants should be enjoyed and allowed to shine on their own, plus they tend to smush. But, fortunately, this croissant was sturdy enough to hold the filling, which was VERY good and very fresh tasting. This is definitely a sandwich shop for cheese lovers, but they do have a vegan option in the California Vegan! Also picked up their tomato burrata tart, which was chewy/gooey, flaky, and juicy from the seasoned grape tomatoes. Overall really enjoyed my visit and my meal and I'll keep it in mind when I'm walking around that part of the neighborhood again. 👍🏽

Google
Best sandwich in town? More like best sandwich on the continent. I got the California vegan and it's honestly the tastiest sandwich I've had in about 15 years. Also, the vibes are super high in here. Y'all just got another regular.

Google
This has become one of my favorite places for lunch. All of their sandwiches are so good & you can tell that they use quality ingredients. They also offer some amazing baked goods and I highly recommend their triple chocolate cookie with Maldon sea salt. Lately, my favorite sandwich has been their Wild Alaskan smoked salmon on a cheddar and jalapeño bagel. Their house made creamy chive smear is so good! My photo is of their bagel sandwich. I also highly recommend their capretzel sandwich, the pretzel roll is so big and soft and the hunk of sheep's milk cheese is amazing.

Google
La Croque is a quaint neighborhood grab and go sandwich shop. I've tried the capretzle and the lox bagel. The capretzle is basically a caprese on a shiny pretzel roll - while I loved the flavors I felt like the bread was a little too chewy for my taste (maybe a side effect from sitting in the display). The lox bagel was a perfect balance of veg, crunch, sweet and savory. I normally am a purist, only going for everything bage's, but the cheddar jalapeño bagel was DELICIOUS and the best rendition of that flavor that I've ever had. Definitely the spot to stop by on your way to the beach or park and such a lovely addition to the neighborhood. Will be back again and again! 🐊💚

Google
The wonderful owner of Happy Cow Kitchen transformed her shop into La 'Croque, showcasing her many delicious sandwich inventions. On Sundays she offers popular desserts which may include cream horns, fruit strudels, pies or cakes. Everything is homemade using fresh ingredients. I was lucky enough to get the last pear strudel during my recent visit and I also grabbed a few cookies. I look forward to trying the pastrami sandwich. One of my favorites is the Capretzel, especially when I want a break from meat. All her goodies are delicious and crave worthy! Help the environment and bring your own containers and bag. Lastly, be sure to follow La 'Croque on Instagram to get the latest news!

Google
Seriously the best sandwich I’ve had in a very long time! So flavorful and high quality. I definitely recommend the turkey waldorf croissant!

Google
The sandwiches I got were super delicious with fresh ingredients, but the pastries were slightly overdone and pretty brown... Still good, but I would have preferred more golden than brown. The hours are very limited so it's really difficult for me to go as often as I'd like

Yelp
STEPH JUDGEMENT: Cute independent shop with great sandwiches. I saw this place a few weeks ago while walking around the neighborhood and was curious. Saw the great reviews and knew I had to try them. The hubby and I decided to get some sandwiches there to take to the beach one day. We got the California vegetarian, which was huge--we decided to split it. At $10, it's a bargain! Fresh flavorful ingredients served with a smile. Definitely looking forward to trying more of their stuff.

Yelp
Solid place for a quick sandwich! I like that the menu doesn't have too many options to choose from. I tried the 'Croque Monsieur this visit and it was solid - like a ham and cheese toastie/grilled ham and cheese sandwich. There are also some pastries, sides, and snacks (like chocolate, popcorn, and chips) available for purchase. Limited seating indoors, but if the weather is good, why not take your sandwich and snacks over to a nearby park or beach? That's what I would do!
google avatar

Yelp
Unusually delicious sandwiches, fast & friendly service and a cute interior. This place is quintessential eastside Long Beach: no parking, limited hours, yet super high quality and well worth the effort. Got the California Vegetarian today and they asked me if I wanted hummus instead of avocado because they weren't happy with the produce they got in the morning - it was so good! I recommend this place to everyone, assuming you can fit into their tight weekend schedule. The pasta salad simply does not miss.

Yelp
First time here and it's a nice little place to stop. Lots of delicious looking pastries and sandwiches behind the glass on the counter. The guy who helped me was super chill! I was immediately drawn to the FRENCH STYLE FICELLE. It looked good but it was a bit underwhelming. The prosciutto was a bit dry but the orange marmalade was a nice touch to balance it out. Also, the bread was a bit dense. I would try someone else next time. I loved the ESPRESSO COOKIE. It was not overly sweet a perfectly mellow cookie. Also pretty big! A nice little treat if you have the chance to stop by.

Yelp
Lovely lovely people! From start to finish. It's a tiny tiny spot but with amazing tasty food and great ingredients. The young man made me the best non flavored latte I've ever had :) and both our sandwiches were great!

Genevi Z.

Yelp
Amaaaaaazing! I got the California Vegan and it was THE best veggie sammie of my life. My husband got the pastrami sandwich and said it was delish. We can't wait to go back, sammies definitely made with love! Service was great, it's a small hidden gem with the coziest vibes

Yelp
Stopped in for the yummy sandwiches, we've been seeing on-line. Everyone was super satisfied. The Croque Monsieur was delicious. My husband enjoyed the Capretzel and the flavors in the French Style Ficelle were so good. The Ficelle is on the small side for a big eater. We added a Guava Turnover and Chocolate Espresso Cookie from the baked goods and they were devoured!!!

Chelsea S.

Yelp
Food: Turkey Waldorf was really packed and I loved it in the croissant. The entree salad got better the more you ate it because there was a lot of very flavorful toppings paired with arugula so it was a really good pair. I tried the triple chocolate cookie and the man helping me choose my order said they're baked fresh!!! Loved it 5/5! The service was great they were loads of help with looking at the menu and picking options! They felt like locals you would meet at the farmers market or around town very nice people :) Ambiance: fresh flowers at each of the small tables and plants around the space.

Yelp
Soft opening! Apparently the owner and her late husband had a bakery, with the husband as a baker. From my friends who used to live in LB, they were a staple and very community based. As I walked in and when others came through, many greeted her with such familiarity. I absolutely love that. It's a very small shop, you're there to take it to go. Among the sandwiches in the bar there are delectable pastries and the menu touts hot sandwiches as well! The person at the front was delightfully kind and really bubbly. The owner was equally nice as well! I don't remember the names of the sandwiches I got but I got the one with Brie and prosciutto with some sweet marmalade on it. This combo isn't new but she put it on a very skinny baguette of cranberries and nuts which was amazing. 10/10 Alaskan? It's lox on a bagel. Can't go wrong. Bagel was a little stale but I think it was the end of the day and it was the soft opening. 8.5/10 Pretzel bread thing: don't let looks deceive you. This was the most flavorful. The goat cheese (I think) and the tomatoes? I don't know it was amazing even though it looked basic. Eat it right away though because it got a little soggy because I ate it late. 9/10 My friend got the Waldorf chicken salad sandwich h and I got a bite and that was amazing. 10/10. I can't wait to come back again!
google avatar

Danika D.

Yelp
This place reminds me of a cute cafe in Atwater Village - which I loooove! I'm so happy spots like this are continuing to pop up in LB. I ordered the veggie sandwich, turkey waldorf, and ficelle for me and my friends ans we all devoured every last bite. Each sandwich had a unique taste and texture that could easily be ordered again. The ficelle was ready to go while the veggie and turkey Waldorf were made fresh which took about 5 min. All worth it!

Yelp
Love this petite lunch spot with delicious sandwiches. I had the Capretzel which is a caprese sandwich on pretzel bread. The service is super friendly and the vibe laid back. The prices are very reasonable. I will definitely be back to this local gem!

Jay B.

Yelp
Ohhh my god!!! First of all this place will change the way you look at sandwiches. I'm the farthest thing away from Vegan but asked what the best sandwich on the menu was "the Vegan" no problem they suggested adding the French ham. Boom let's do it! Definitely one of the best sandwiches I have ever had in my life!!! The veggies on this thing were straight farm to table. So fresh and so so good I was simply stunned. Every bite was better than the last. Tomatoes and veggies so juicy and flavorful you'll lose your mind... I mean just unreal at how fresh everything was. And the pastry and cookie selection was insane. The triple chocolate chip cookie is a must. I live in the bay but can't wait to visit again to grab another sandwich from this amazing eatery. Love the food , love the warm welcoming decor, and the service is top tier. I would give it a 10 star rating if possible!!! Such an amazing find!!! Do yourself a solid and hit this spot up.

Yelp
What a cute find! I was waking Redondo Ave and came across La 'Croque and figured I would have lunch. Their pastrami sandwich was yummy. Only thing I wish I was able to get at the time was a coffee/latte but their machine was down. I ended up grabbing a canned coffee instead. The space is small and cute. The service was great!
google avatar

Riyah P.

Yelp
Oh my gosh!!!! Soooo amazing, this place is a little hidden gem. The sandwich I got was the "FRENCH STYLE FICELLE ( pronounced FEEEEE - CELLLLL ) Thin Sliced European Proscuitto, French Butter, French Brie Cheese, House Made Orange Marmalade Served On A Long Thin Chewy Cherry + Walnut and Orange Peel Baguette" and let me tell you, heaven in every bite! To top it off they had great tasting espresso!
google avatar

Yelp
I was put in charge of providing sandwiches for the ladies at the tea party at my church. I am not one to cook big group meals but I wanted to provide them with some delicious food. Claudette and her cooking was the first place to come to mind. She provided us with a wonderful selection of sandwiches, all fresh ingredients as always. The ladies loved the and devoured them. Including our resident vegan that simply raved about how good her sandwich was. And getting to see Claudette for pick up always brings a smile to my face. Of course while I was there I also had to get a couple of cookies for myself. After all, what is a visit to La'Croque without a cookie :)
google avatar

Sallie R.

Yelp
Cute little sandwich shop. It's very small located on a busy street. Came across it while driving. I was warmly greeted as I walked in. There were some options of sandwiches you can choose from. Turkey Waldorf was a popular choice. It was delicious! My order came out quick. There are a few seatings if you like to sit down and enjoy your meal. They also offer pastries, snacks, and drinks. I'm glad I took the time to check it out.

Yelp
Second time here and very satisfied with food and service. My daughter requested the Croque mansieur and I got the French style ficelle. My daughter loves how her "grilled cheese " is perfectly crisped and gooey, mine was great, the orange marmalade was different but it paired well with the meat and cheese and the bread was perfect not overly hard. Then we had to get some cookies, the dark chocolate espresso is a must get. The place is small but nice with a few tables.
google avatar

Molly B.

Yelp
Cute but very tiny spot & not ideal to eat in (no seating or umbrellas outside). Given recent legislation and inflation, I'm not surprised that the sandwiches were a couple bucks more expensive than what is justifiable. I got the hot pastrami and did enjoy it, but there wasn't much meat - nothing at all like a loaded deli pastrami that goes for about the price. Also, I was put off by seeing most of their sandwiches sitting on the counter in the warm restaurant. Very odd to see smoked salmon sitting out for who knows how long. If you get a sandwich later in the day, you can see how dried out the meat is.
google avatar

Bryan T.

Yelp
Probably one of the best sandwiches I've had in the area. Heard about it on social media and came here over the weekend for lunch. Parking is limited, you mainly have to park on the street. Inside it was pretty small, but the decor was nice and it felt cozy. I ordered the French Style Ficelle and it was so good. It had prosciutto, orange jam, and a block of Brie cheese. It was a pretty good portion and it reminds me of a sandwich you would get in Europe.
google avatar

William S.

Yelp
Had the vegan sandwich and it was fabulous. I would go back again. Service as great and people were friendly. What more could you want?
google avatar

Sergio J.

Yelp
Worst cookie I've had in my life. I'm so sorry to say. All the other pastries were fire - especially the guava. They were out of bread of the sandwich I wanted. Got another sandwich which felt like a grilled cheese with ham that I could've made myself easily. The place is cute. Staff is nice.
google avatar

Drew C.

Yelp
Amazing food and service! Wonderful people working here and Long Beach is so lucky to have this establishment. Hidden gem for sure
google avatar

Jenny L.

Yelp
This place is a nice little hole in the wall place. Alittle hard to find , and parking SUCKS considering it's long beach. At first I thought this sandwich was really skinny lol because it was. But it was long. And actually half way I was pretty filled from the bread. I was surprised. And the bread is really good, maybe it's the French butter with it or the brie but mmmm mmmm mmmm!! I wonder if they sell the French butter by itself... I would buy!
google avatar

Kayla T.

Yelp
To experience the first bite all over again.... The alaskan smoked salmon sandwich was phenomenal and what i dreamed of as a smoked salmon lover. Love the unique profile flavor the dijon mustard adds and bell peppers (?). Amazing amazing amazing!! Also amazing vibes - feels like a serene deli and hole in the wall type of spot. Amazing service as well!! Definitely coming back to try everything else
google avatar

elizabeth t.

Yelp
Very cute little spot and although I was very excited to try this place, sadly, it was just OK. I thought I could not go wrong with the Brie and prosciutto sandwich but the Brie was the opposite of creamy and in all everything was so dry. I received too much of the brine in my sandwich from the Brie. Maybe it was just a bad day???

Aly H.

Yelp
The most charming yet delicious sandwich shop in LB! Each sandwich has its own unique flair, and the Ficelle is my absolute favorite. The service is always friendly, and they've added more sides and sweets to the menu--everything is a win!
google avatar

Janine D.

Yelp
The food, the service with a friendly smile and the convivial clientele make this a wonderful place to visit!
google avatar

Jackson G.

Yelp
The ficelle is bomb.com. The nuttiness of the bread, the sweetness of the orange marmalade paired with the brie is absolutely marvelous. Great sandwich for a picnic with a loved one on a sunny day. 10/10 very tasty eats, great service and cute store
google avatar

Julissa S.

Yelp
Formally Happy Cow Kitchen, same owner but with a focus on sandwiches and snacks! Everything is quality and fresh. The ambience of this place is small and cozy and a perfect place for a quick bite. My goal is to try all the sandwiches!

Yelp
Tried 3 sandwiches here (ham+cheese, prosciutto baguette and turkey salad) and they were all very good! I would just recommend to tone it down on the brie on the baguette sandwich, I bit overwhelming. The jam was great though. Also great vibes overall, feels like a very chill place and servers are always very nice!
google avatar

Andrew G.

Yelp
I loved this place! Its super simply and dishing out great and simple sandwiches. Inside is small but when the weather is good just take them on the go and eat them outside. Service is snappy and very helpful!

Aneeta S.

Yelp
Really delicious sandwiches- with quick service. Their menu is small, but everything they make is high quality. We love their Turkey Waldorf and Salmon sandwiches
google avatar

Yelp
Claudette has worked her magic again with this incredible sandwich shop. Happy Cow was a Sunday staple for years, and La 'Croque builds on that legacy and somehow makes it even more magical! The sandwiches are incredible. My favorites are the Capretzel (pretzel bun with sheep's milk cheese, pesto, fresh tomatoes) and the California Vegan (loaded with fresh veggies, hummus, etc). The shop is loaded with gourmet chips, chocolate bars, drinks, etc. The true highlight of the experience is still the delightful people, though. Claudette and Jack are incredible hosts, and they make everyone feel like family. I'm so thrilled that La 'Croque is in the neighborhood, and I can't wait to devour their incredible treats for years to come
google avatar

Yelp
Cute little shop, friendly staff, delicious sandwiches! Just wish they were open other days of the week

Selena A.

Yelp
Nothing to write home about. Tried a few sandwiches the veggie and a Turkey Waldorf. The cookies are good but Likely won't go back unless we are in a pinch. Unfortunate since Babbets is closing and we really wanted to find a new sandwich spot.
google avatar

Randy A.

Yelp
I ordered the La Croque Monsieur sandwich. It is delicious! I also bought several of their pastries. So fresh and delicious! I wholeheartedly recommend this jewel.

Yelp
been meaning to try this spot since i saw it's opening on social media. honestly blew me away. i copped the turkey waldorf... when i tell you that was an experience with every single bite--im not lyin'. so good. customer service amazing and such a cool chill ambiance inside. highly recommend.

Anora S.

Yelp
What a hole in the wall! So happy we stumbled upon this place. It's so cute and cozy, very welcoming ambiance. We got the ficelle and the pastrami-- both were delicious. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Christopher M.

Yelp
An updated format of the previous Happy Cow Kitchen with a new look. Most of the previous menu still exists, which is great news if you liked what they were about before. The new spot puts the focus on sandwiches and an official menu, rather than the specials that would come and go. They've also extended their hours beyond Sundays, open for the better part of the week. The ficelle sandwiches and cookies are still the standout items, and there's still plenty of vegan options. Hopefully the baked goods will continue to have a presence, as those were the highlights for me. Still a cute spot, still super-friendly service.

W H.

Yelp
Happened upon this little sandwich shop by chance today while in the area. Best sandwich, fresh tomato and most delicious bread ever in U.S. Guy at the counter was very nice, good music and great vibe! Will be back.
google avatar

M C.

Yelp
Love this spot so much! Great French sandwiches all under $15 for grab and go, fun sides and cute storefront! Lovely to grab for a picnic or beach day, definitely mu favourite sandwich spot!

Carissa C.

Yelp
such a cute little shop! food was amazing & customer service was great! definitely recommend
google avatar

Walter F.

Yelp
Everything here is good. The problem is they're not open everyday and it's kind of expensive. If you like a gay fashion show then this your spot. I like a gay fashion show. And I like coffee. And I like sandwiches. I will definitely come again. Feels like France or Italy. Trust me. I've been there.
google avatar

Yelp
From the moment you enter this space, you know love is on the menu. Thankful. I find myself transported with every bite from any of the delicious, thoughtfully constructed sandwiches and pastries, to a place of care. My first bite was of the Tomato sheep cheese pretzel bun thing. I was hooked. Thanks La 'Croque, y'all are amazing.

Saul R.

Yelp
Stopped by today for lunch and I'm already craving going back again! I had the turkey Waldorf, and it was just the perfect mix of flavors, just augmented by the buttery croissant. Despite the small size of the interior, this place is lively and welcoming! The cashier was very helpful and fun to talk to, and we even got to talk for a bit with the owner/chef. Would recommend if you're in Long Beach.
google avatar

Johnny W.

Yelp
What a gem! Fantastic and delicious bites. A vary charming vibe/ atmosphere and lovely team. Super quality and service. Please come support this amazing spot!!!

Deanna B.

Yelp
The vegan sandwich was delicious and so large that I split it with another person. The thickly sliced whole grain bread was remarkable (I'm not a fan of bread usually). Staff was friendly, service was fast. Although on a busy street, I found parking on Redondo easily on a Saturday afternoon. Pricing was reasonable. I will definitely order again.

Yelp
Stopped by to check it out. Still owned by the same Happy Cow bakery people but a different menu. Had the baguette sandwich and a cream horn. Both were solidly good.. Not incredible but good fresh ingredients. Note, this a not a sit down place but carry out only.
