As Batman once said - "holy guacamole!" I have died and gone to Mexican food heaven. Not only was the food at La Encantada comparable to Topolobampo and Mixteco Grill, but it cost half as much.
Last night my friend Mary O. and I had dinner at La Encantada, a few months after trying to have lunch there and finding out that the restaurant is only open for dinner. Oh well - it took us more than 45 minutes to drive there from Ravenswood, and I have to tell you, I'd be on the road again tonight, if I had made it to the cash station today. It was that good.
First, the location is on what I charitably call a nondescript strip of North Avenue in Humbolt Park. You can park at a meter on North Avenue, or you can find a free parking spot on a nearby side street, as I did.
The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated. It looks like it was lifted, tables, artwork, and bar, from the Gold Coast or Lincoln Park. Lots of original artwork, both paintings and photographs, and well-lit, although maybe a tad dark. I was okay with my glasses (as usual), but Mary O. resorted to using a flashlight on her key chain. Hey, she's prepared for dinner!
The menu, according to the waiter, represents several states of Mexico, with an emphasis on Zacatecas. What can I tell you? My experience of Mexican states is limited to those with shorelines and all-inclusive resorts.
Since I figured we'd be there for a little while, I dived into a basic Margarita. It was $5 for a small, normal one, without any special fruit flavors or a larger size. I liked it enough to order a second one. The drink meny also lists a tequila tasting menu; several different brands of tequila, and of those, the basic kinds, anejos, and reposados. I'd like to go back and try some of those, but someone else will have to drive on that occasion.
Mary ordered the Sopa de Elote (corn soup) for an appetizer, and I decided to skip my usual guacamole and instead ordered Picaditas, which are small crispy masa patties topped with onions, green sauce, cheese, sour cream, and avocado. Holy guacamole, Batman! They were fantastic! And Mary gave me a taste of her soup, which was also fantastic. She thought it was the best she'd ever had.
We each had a green salad that came with our entrees. This was just a typical lettuce salad, nothing special. We each ordered the avocado dressing and that was good.
Mary and I both love mole; that's what attracted us to this restaurant in the first place. You choose an entree, and you get to pick a side dish from the list on the menu. I ordered enchildas with cheese in mole, and ensalada de nopoalitos (cactus salad) for my side. Heaven!
Mary went for the Chicken in Mole, and a side of nopalitos (not the salad). She very kindly gave me one bite of her chicken - she said it might be the best mole she ever had. Her nopalitos were a little spicier than mine.
We shared sopapillas for dessert. She felt they were absolutely perfect.
This is definintely my new favorite restaurant in Chicago. If they delivered as far north as my neighborhood, I'd be chomping on their food right now, dripping mole onto the keyboard. But boy oh boy, you can bet I'll be back, and soon.
