8 Essential Restaurants in Cary, North Carolina

"Master baker Lionel Vatinet’s La Farm is everywhere, including the Raleigh–Durham International Airport and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. But the cafe in Preston Corners offers more than just the delicious, yet ubiquitous, baked goods in a warm cafe setting. The quiche Lorraine is complemented by the house Counter Culture drip coffee or full espresso bar for breakfast. For lunch, sandwiches are served on fresh La Farm bread – the Southwest turkey on ciabatta is a delicious pick." - Sarah Day Owen Wiskirchen

Overpriced and overrated. I ordered an egg and cheese sandwich and it leaves little to be desired. It doesn’t seem to be real egg. The bread is dry and it has no flavor. Barely any cheese. The latte just tastes like hot flavored milk. The lady who checked me out was sweet as she wanted to be. So I gave benefit of the doubt on the rating. The baguette I ordered was just thrown in a bag and handed to me. I wasn’t asked if I wanted it warmed or anything. Definitely not worth the twenty one dollars I spent. And wont be back.

I stopped by La Farm Bakery in Cary for a casual work meeting and ended up really enjoying the whole experience. It’s one of those places that feels relaxed the moment you walk in bright, cozy, and just the right amount of busy. We grabbed coffee and croissants. The coffee was smooth and not too bitter, and the croissant was warm, buttery, and had that perfect flaky texture. I got the chocolate one maybe could’ve used a bit more chocolate in the middle, but still really good overall. I liked that there were different seating options some quiet corners where you can focus, bigger tables for chatting, and even a few comfy spots if you just want to chill for a bit. It didn’t feel too loud or cramped, which made it easy to talk. The staff was friendly and helpful, but not in an “over the top” way which I always appreciate. All in all, it’s a solid spot if you need somewhere to meet up, get a little work done, or just enjoy a good pastry. Not trying too hard, just doing what they do really well.

My first time here at this location and last time, breakfast sandwich was artificial especially the egg. Definitely will not return to this one, so disappointed. Ohhhh I had to add my own jelly.

Google
I bought a ham and cheese croissant. Delish, but could use a little more cheese! Brownie was yummy. They could improve their sales. If they served ice blended coffee!

Google
Went here for a quick coffee atmosphere inside was so cute and staff were really friendly and helpful. Coffee was amazing, I got the cortado and a latte and they were spot on. The pastries however were not the best in my opinion but I think its because my almond croissant was stale. Definitely recommend the coffee.

Google
Kind and helpful staff, bread and pastries are as good as in France, coffee is very good! Food is simple, clean and very good also! If I were a local I would definitely be a regular customer! Cary NC, you are lucky! Bon travail!!

Google
I was really impressed by the food. The quiche portions were also larger than I was anticipating. I ordered delivery and the app did not have a picture of some of the food items.

Google
This bakery makes first rate pastries and cakes. The minature pear ricotta cheesecakes and key lime cheesecakes are delicacies! Pricey but worth it! I go to the downtown location which only has outdoor seating, which is the only reason I did not give it 5 stars for atmosphere.

Yelp
I heard many wonderful things about LaFarm, so I had to try it when I was in Cary for a family gathering. Wow, the comments were understated! This is an authentic European style bakery cafe with so many fresh made options from which to choose. I settled on a croque mansieur that equaled any I had tried in Europe. I chose the Lemon Blueberry scone as a chaser because why not! Crusty on the outside and moist on the inside. The cafe mocha was delicious as well. I left feeling nourished both physically and emotionally! My only nit to pick is the outdoor seating on the asphalt parking lot is not the most appealing.

Yelp
I had such high hopes for La Farm as I've had their baked goods on several occasions and was super impressed. However, this was not the case for my food today. I was starving and heading into work, so I thought I would grab a quick and delicious bite. Everything I asked for was unfortunately not available. I went with the Croque Monsieur, as it was the only cooked food available. It came out to me in a cute little white box. As I opened the box, I was saddened to see the size of the sandwich and that it was covered with this thick cheese and mayo like substance. It was super greasy and thick. I tried my first bite and a second bite. My teeth could barely get through the bread. I had to break it off to eat it. I thought maybe I would have a better time with eating the ham. The ham was these three sad and basic slices of deli meat. After trying the ham and attempting one more bite, I said no way am I going to be able to finish this and return it. I spoke with the manager upon returning the sandwich. He explained that their food is brought in from another location, and they just have a toaster in the back to warm it up; so it is better to go to the other location. If you know the quality of your cooked food will not be the best because you do not have adequate facilities then do not offer it. Two stars for being able to access a manager and get my money back. Minus three for the lackluster service and telling me to leave and go up the street for better quality food. Also, for not indicating on your menu that it is controlled by you on an adjustable screen, what items are not available. I will not be returning.

Yelp
Nice spot for a reasonably quick breakfast. Good food, though the menu is somewhat limited. Plenty of seating.

Jazelle G.

Yelp
The food was really yummy and the coffee was great :) the inside felt a bit awkward/ quiet not super inviting. No seating area inside but the limited seating area outside was so nice to people watch. This place seemed more grab and go but for a sit down maybe get there early to snag some patio seating outside.

Yelp
I have lived in the Triangle my whole life, and lots of things have changed as the area has grown but the one thing that has remained a prominent fixture the whole time is La Farm. I used to get La Farm with my family every weekend at the State Farmers Market, and now I'm an adult and still ordering the same blueberry scone every time I go! Their bread is phenomenal, too. I don't often visit for a meal so I can't really speak for their food, but when I've had it before it's been pretty good. But the bread/pastries are definitely the selling point.
google avatar

Brittany W.

Yelp
Yummy pastries but just okay lattes. They add wayyyy too much milk. Good quiche but desperately needs salt and pepper. Everything here is overpriced. The quiche was almost $12.

Yelp
TLDR: Excellent breads and pastries! Love their original Cary location. This location offers another store front to sell their delicious baked goods. There is no restaurant at this storefront, but they do sell pre-made sandwiches and quiches. Typically I go to their Cary Parkway location, but since I was in the area I decided to give this spot a try. It is small and packed with items. As always, I'm so happy I stopped by. I was specifically looking for a small snack, dessert, and a loaf of bread to go with dinner. La Farm of course did not disappoint. I purchased blueberry scone, chocolate croissant (my favorite), focaccia (highly recommend), sourdough, almond croissant, and a berry cream cheese tart. I was happy to see that their blueberry scone didn't have white chocolate in it as their other scones do. Although we liked all of the items, we especially recommend the focaccia. It has the perfect texture and flavor. Only problem is that we eat everything too fast! Similar to their original Cary location, they sell a variety of breads, pastries, beverages, and merchandise here. Although they do not have a kitchen, they sell pre-made sandwiches and quiches. Customer service is great at both locations I have visited. I was greeted as soon as I walked in and helped right away. Parking was easy as they have ample spots available right out front. Overall, excellent experience and we recommend this bakery to others!

Yelp
quality of bread and croissants has gone downhill., 2nd day in a row., over baked pan au chocolat., so dark it's unappealing and not appetizing., too crumbly all the way inside. The lady at the counter was so rude, she was rushing my husband to check out while he's busy looking on the bread section and trying to choose which bread to buy., meanwhile the rude girl was talking loudly with a male co worker calling him a loser and exchanging unpleasantries with each other. We will try the other branches in Cary as this will be our last on this branch.

Yelp
La Farm Bakery is a true Raleigh gem. I visit each time I go for coffee and a few treats for breakfast. The sourdough pretzels are really good and the white chocolate mini baguettes are to die for. I visit the Cary location at breakfast and then grab some treats at the airport on the way home. You can order online ahead of time which is a nice option as they are sold out of many items when I get there around 8:45 in the morning. Everything seems to be baked fresh likely daily so a real treat.

Yelp
Outside seating only by a busy street. Ample parking. Great latte but the pastries lacked flavor. Weak cinnamon in the cinnamon roll for example, although icing was devine. Tomato and mozzarella pastry in which I could not detect the cheese. With the German bakery close by I am not sure I would go here often.

Yelp
Finally got a picture of my favorite breakfast item at La Farm - the ham and cheese croissant. It is a perfect (albeit, very messy) choice if you love savory breakfast foods. Crispy on the outside, while soft, savory, and cheesy on the inside. I also got an oat milk latte, my go-to whenever I'm at La Farm. Such a warm and comforting cup of coffee -- it never gets old. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
What's not to love at La Farm! It's a bakery institution in the Triangle- one of the best in town. I stopped by on a Saturday morning to grab some treats for my husband and stepdaughter. I got her one of the little bread men and she just ate all the chocolate parts, but loved it. My husband's favorite it the pain au chocolat and croissants. If you've never been, go visit ASAP!

Yelp
Always a good experience. First time at this location. Fresh breads were my reason for the visit today while in the area. Baguette, farm bread and hard rolls as we were making Kings BBQ Shrimp from the restaurant in Cali. The staff greets you and offers assistance as you browse their shelves of honey, jams and oils. As I waited to check out, I reviewed their refrigerated case and chose a Mediterranean sandwich on foccacia. Sundried tomatoes, fresh mozzarella slices, oregano, olive oil, etc. Yum. Decided its my lunch in the car, as I made the trek back East. This bakery is our choice when in or near Raleigh. Glad to find this location.

Yelp
this was my first and last visit to this location - ordered an egg sandwich and was shocked to see they are using those little pre-fab egg rounds and the bread was so covered with flour on base i nearly choked. For what you are paying for they should have some standard like their original cary location. I would skip the chatham street for anything unless grabbing loaves of bread or muffins - maybe they are ok. they don't seem to have an actual kitchen designed to serve anything other than prefab stuff, just as well hit starbucks/dunkin. I would actually suggest they just remove the low quality/prefab stuff from the menu and just stick to pastries. Definitely a one and done for me, just horrible. I like the original cary spot but these satellites need some help.

Yelp
We ordered the Chocolate Beignet and a Berry Tart. They were both unremarkable. They look fine and sound good, but the execution feels mass-produced and lacks quality control. Chocolate beignet - Perhaps it would have been better fresh, but it just felt like a sugared white bread and Nutella. Tastes fine but is not worth visiting a bakery for. Berry Tart - Again, maybe it's crucial to stop by in the morning because they felt past their time at 1:27 p.m. I've had better second-day baked goods from coffee shops. I'd give this 2.5/5 as it reminded me of an airline meal dessert. This rating doesn't take in the seating area, especially given this is a more 'pick-up type and take home' setting.

Misty G.

Yelp
Breakfast sandwich was ok, but not the best. Would order something else next time. Macron was soggy and tasted frozen/thawed. Great coffee - ended up ordering two. Loved the atmosphere of the place and the staff were super friendly.

Yelp
Stopped in for breakfast since I was getting work done on my jeep down at Cj Autosport and La Farm did not disappoint ! The sausage stuffed Baquette was warm and flavor and the Baquette was nice and crunchy . The Hazelnut beignets were pillowy soft almost like what you find at cafe du monde in New Orleans but without the powdered sugar. Staff was nice and fast would definitely drop by again
google avatar

Yelp
For being a small place, this has a lot to offer in terms of coffee and baked goods. My wife got a caramel iced coffee, and it came with actual caramel sauce in the coffee. The coffee itself was also good. She loved it! They had both savory and sweet baked goods. We went the sweet route with a berry scone (I forget exactly what berry it was). It was baked perfectly with that nice scone crumble texture. In addition to their baked goods and coffee, they also have some other items for purchase (honey, locally made gifts, etc) Their outside seating area was nice--plenty of tables and the morning sun felt very nice as we enjoyed our coffees and scone.

Yelp
I'm glad La Farm decided to open a location in downtown Cary, and am also grateful that this place is nowhere near as crowded as the original La Farm on High House. However, that means the selection is a bit limited. There is also not much seating - pretty much all the seating is outdoors. So this is a much better location for a quick grab-and-go, but probably not ideal for meeting up with people, unless the weather is nice. The quality of the food is still the same compared to the High House location.

Yelp
I have been going to LaFarm for over ten years. This LaFarm always disappoints. My favorite is the almond croissant. On more than one occasion the croissant has been hard and over baked. I asked the guy to try a few more and they were all the same. The chocolate croissant were just as hard. He was embarrassed and very apologetic Sometimes I've taken the croissant home, there's little or next to no almond paste inside. Another time I brought one back and I told the girl that the location in the airport is a totally different experience. The pastries are big and always fresh. She said she was surprised because that location is the baking hub for all. I find that hard to believe when there is no consistency between locations. I hope they change the baker at this location and make the croissants the way they should be.
google avatar

Vivienne C.

Yelp
Was excited to try out La Farm Bakery because it seemed like one of those quintessential RTP area things to do. Went to an off location which was okay because it turns out that here is where most of the baking happens for all of its locations due to its industrial-sized kitchen. The store itself was pretty small and the food was pretty pricy which I was a bit surprised about. Got the white chocolate baguette bites upon recommendation and it is exactly what you would expect: white chocolate stuffed in small baguettes. Would not say it is particularly special and wish there was a bit more white chocolates in the bread. Not sure if I would come back if I was in the area, but it was a good experience to have.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in for a late lunch / snack on a Saturday afternoon. Great selection of breads and pastries. The chocolate almond croissant was delicious. Was a little disappointed that they were "out" of iced tea at 3PM though
google avatar

Akshay R.

Yelp
Tired this Bakery for first time and it's good. They have very fresh breads and breakfast. They have different kinds of crossiants and hot breakfast items. The place looks good too. They have a working kitchen on site and they make fresh items. I tried stuffed baguette and spinach quiche and it's good. Service is good too. They have lot of other items that they sell. I would say it's a bit pricey though.
google avatar

Marie T.

Yelp
Lots of delicious bakery treats - cookies, chocolates, pastries and breads. I personally really enjoy their almond croissant! It seems like their products are baked on premises so you are certain to leave with something fresh! I don't prefer their coffee so I usually stick to the baked goods.
google avatar

Molly K.

Yelp
The white chocolate mini baguette is everything! I also loved the croque monsieur & the fact that they carry Orangina. 'Service was great, too.
google avatar

Tammy M.

Yelp
This is as I call it the La Farm "satellite location". They do have ovens here and they bake items here but it's a smaller location than the one on Cary Pkwy. There are a few tables inside. It's a nice little coffee shop type of set up. There are even a few tables outside I believe. Our favorite thing to get at La Farm is their original sour dough bread. It is crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. We were disappointed that they couldn't slice the bread for us today because they said it was too warm. After letting the bread sit at home for over 4 hours, I had a hard time slicing it. I would think that their machine would of done a much better (and more uniform) job. Next time I will insist that they slice it. We are not fond of their pastries. You can't go wrong with the bread.
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
This place is great! I love all the baked goods -- what a melange they offer. Everything I've had has been very good, supple and crunchy and French. It gets busy on the weekends, but the line moves fast and the staff is nice. Definitely get the croque madame if you dine in -- Amazing!
google avatar

Ann H.

Yelp
It's not the cafe location and it's not the food truck. What this location has is the bakery itself, now open for buying the loaves or half loaves of bread as is available from the cafe, maybe having some coffee and then taking advantage of the sampling, but all without the crowds and the parking issues. If you want a full meal or a quick lunch, you'll still need to visit the cafe or find the food truck. There were no aromas of baking bread when I walked in, but it was late in the day. I'll have to work on my timing for that treat, I guess. Just as at the cafe, the employees make recommendations for food pairings with the bread, spend time describing the bakery items to the customers who ask, and packaging the bread or rolls to go. Stop in, get some bread and tell your guests you worked all day in the kitchen baking a loaf just for them. Or, maybe not. Brag about the options in Cary for fresh bread, instead. You can be here where the bread magic happens, though.
google avatar

Kevin C.

Yelp
This is the bread factory for the rest of the La Farm chain, so it's not surprising that it looks like a production facility in the back with a store front. The breads, while pricey compared to other bakeries, are really good and worth the splurge. On this day, I had a blueberry scone and it did not disappoint!
google avatar

Vaishnavi N.

Yelp
I like this bakery in the other location. The coffee here wasn't as good as the other locations. I usually get their vanilla latte and almond croissant. Croissant was great but coffee was disappointing.
google avatar

Ramya M.

Yelp
Love lafarm jellys and breads. I moved to north Raleigh and miss lafarm sooo much. Pls open a branch in north Raleigh you guys ll do sooo well.
google avatar

Adam B.

Yelp
Much credit for having a lot of samples available to try. We arrived around 11, but unfortunately, several of their breads, like the Scandanavian rye, weren't going to be ready until later in the day. Being that I had to drive back to Norfolk and be back by mid-afternoon, that just wasn't going to work. I did get the pretzel bread to go and it was a tremendous snack. Crispy exterior, chewy and fluffy inside, and just a tiny hint of salt.
google avatar

Mark L.

Yelp
I got a bacon, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich. Bread was stale and the sandwich tasted like salt.
google avatar

Katharine B.

Yelp
This location is not as busy as the Cary Parkway shop and cafe. You can still get baguettes, croissant and other baked goods here. They don't offer the hot cafe items so if you just want a coffee drink or a fresh loaf to go, this is the secret bakery location for famous La Farm baked goods. Lionel's breads are so famous that you can get them at Whole Foods, at local farmer's markets and the original bakery. This has more of a warehouse feel and am sure much is produced here and distributed to sales venues. You can sit inside, outside or just shop and go.

Lisa K.

Yelp
this is the third time in a row that I have purchased baked goods from this location and it's been over priced and terrible... the quiche went moldy within 2 days and just does not taste at all like the one I always ordered in the sit down location - the rustic bread that I always buy is just frustrating because it's never cut through enough to pull apart so it ruins the pieces to toast or make a sandwich - went to the sit down location and prices are way up and portion sizes way down - the croquet madame is now only one egg instead of two? - just done with all this..
google avatar

LaShawn S.

Yelp
Employee was so friendly. The cute cookies made in the shape of roses and carrots etc are a must have for my kids. I love gems such as this establishment. Definitely revisiting!!
google avatar

Patty H.

Yelp
Too pricey for what you get. I was in the neighborhood & had heard good things, so I stopped in. Bought a loaf of Rustic Italian bread, a chocolate croissant for my hubby & a container of Chipotle Pimento Cheese. My bill was over $16. They asked if I wanted a receipt. I said no, but wish I said yes so I would know how much the croissant & pimento cheese cost. Bread was $5. The Chipotle Pimento Cheese was delicious, but only a 6.4 oz container. Fill it up to 8 oz for whatever price you charge. The bread was good, but nothing special. Then there is the not so "chocolate" croissant. See the pictures for the speck of chocolate in the croissant. Definitely would not go out of my way to go back.
google avatar

Sarah Z.

Yelp
I had been to the other location, but hadn't yet gotten around to seeing the downtown Cary location. My husband suggested an impromptu mini date and I was more than happy to go. I was so happy to see a parking lot which isn't always the case in Cary. I absolutely loved the atmosphere inside. I loved the openness, the industrial ovens, and the feel of being inside a working bakery but with the charm of a cafe. They really knocked it out of the park. We got a blueberry scone and a slice of apple almond tart. Both were delicious, which is no surprise. The scone had nice pieces of berry, it was not too dense and had a great texture on the outside. The apple tart was delicate and flavorful, but not overly sweet. Can't wait for another mini date and to eventually eat my way through their entire menu.
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
They don't serve the full menu that the other two locations serve, but they do have pastries, coffee, and a few sandwiches. This location is good for a quick stop for a treat or to grab bread, and friendly service.
google avatar

Kelly H.

Yelp
Was in the area and had a few minutes to spare so decided to see how close I was to LaFarm since I had a craving for their infamous white chocolate baguettes. To my surprise I was only a half mile from this gem of a location!! I've never been to this one and boy, was I so glad I found it! It was spacious and so much less crowded than their location near Preston/High House and the other one co-located with Lowe's Foods (off Hwy 55?). If I remember correctly the employees who were there that evening were Katie and Zion. Zion was there first. He greeted me joyfully and was so very helpful in suggesting different items based on what I was interested in accomplishing (good soup bread, neighbor's gifts, trying something new and good bread for French toast-oh! And don't forget the white chocolate baguettes!! Yum!) He really had the best attitude. This is when Katie came in, we chose some scones for the gifts and he offered to have them divided and gift wrapped. I would have never thought that was an option! Katie happily helped him and made them beautiful. It made shopping effortless on my part. While I may live a bit further away from this location, you can bet that I will go out of my way to come back. They have earned a loyal customer for life! (Oh- and our kids are coming with me next time. They'd love it!)

Yelp
I am baffled by the lack of good reviews for this location. It's definitely more of their Bakery, with some grab and go items, but I have visited multiple times and have the best experience each time. There are always a ton of samples of some of their seasonal offerings and they have a list of what breads/bakery items are available and on what day. There is a bit of seating as well, if you wanted to grab a pastry and a coffee. I consistently order their Asiago Cheese Bread, as we love eating it with any meal at our house. Also their Bacon Rolls are to die for and we have them at our holiday dinner. While the full restaurant is incredible, this location is perfect if you are in a rush or want to take La Farm items home with you. Easy to get to. Great parking. Sweet staff. Incredible food.

Justin M.

Yelp
This review is in regards to their coffee, since it is (was) the primary reason I come here. Up until recently, they had the best coffee in the area. I feel bad leaving a poor review since I really like their staff, but this is simply in hopes that management will fix the problem. Unfortunately, they recently replaced their espresso machine with an automatic machine, and the coffee from it ranges from weak to terrible. It surprises me that a French bakery would go the cheap route and get such a machine. Just like bread... there's an art to making good coffee. I've spent time in France and have had espresso all over the country. This is not that!

Yelp
I arrived this morning at the Amtrak Train Station in Cary and a few blocks away was this gem of a bakery. The wonderful aromas of baked bread greeted us outside. Inside we enjoyed a wonderful apple almond tart, white chocolate baguette and chai tea. Beautiful huge loaves of bread cooled on racks. Just a delightful time. Will definitely return the next time I am in town.

Yelp
I've recently discovered La farm within the past couple years since covid. It's around 15 minute drive one way from my house. My usual order is the deluxe breakfast sandwich. I can't tell you how many times the order has been wrong. They leave off the bacon and one time forgot the egg whites, wtf. Sometimes I call back and they issue a refund. But this last time was the very last time. They forgot my egg whites and gave me eggs, I can't eat egg yolks. And added chives to a breakfast sandwich. Just an entire mess. And let's not forget the cost of the sandwich is around $12 by the time I add my toppings. That plus the price of gas is a bad combination. It's just not worth the trouble. And I see people picking up large orders I can't imagine how messed up there order is. Now when the order is correct it's a great tasting sandwich but those rare times don't outweigh the bad. I'm loyal customer until I'm not and I am no longer a customer.

Yelp
The lack of stock and the service here is not good. The employees appear to not give a rats. I love supporting local business and willing to pay a premium but they need to up their game.

Nicole S.

Yelp
My family (especially my 18month daughter) all love bread. Being from san Francisco we were used to boudin bread, since moving to NC 2 and a half years ago. We have been searching for good bread. Let me just say we had them DELIVER us bread. We ordered like 4 or 5 different ones. Also spreads and scones (which I have hidden, I'm not sharing) They were amazing! Even my father in law liked it. Everyone I had contact with were so great at helping me organize so we could get bread for my whole community. Which is very large. Robert the GM was amazing, patient, attentive and friendly. All delivered contactless to each house by Kriss and Katie H. Sally also called everyone for payment and confirmation. I know our neighborhood can not wait to order again! Thank you so much Robert and crew!

Yelp
Rustic little place with great food for a light breakfast and the aroma through out is divine! Fresh bread is the ultimate comfort food and this place has that in spades! Neighborhood is so fortunate to have such a great place close to home

Yelp
I'm kinda baffled by the low ratings for this La Farm location. This is a satellite location for La Farm which from my understanding is more of a bakery where you can buy their baked goods and breads and not a cafe. If you're looking to have access to their breakfast/lunch foods, I would visit their main location on Cary Parkway which is not far from this location. I have been there some days where they have their food truck set up outside and they offer a limited menu. Otherwise, when I come to this location it's mostly just to buy a loaf of bread/bakery item or to grab a coffee. The staff here is super friendly and always very helpful!

Yelp
This is an awesome bakery. Everything is delicious and very fresh! I love their traditional bread as well as the cinnamon white chocolate and blueberry/raspberry mini scones! The two delivery women are very hospitable and informative.
