The Best Late-Night Phoenix Eats | Eater Phoenix

"This no-frills permanent food truck provides traditional, impeccably done Mexican plates well into the night. La Frontera 1 is open until 12:45 a.m. Sunday to Tuesday and 1:45 a.m. the rest of the week. In a city flush with great Mexican food, La Frontera’s al pastor taco holds its own. They serve staple mariscos dishes until close (a rarity), and their $2-4 agua frescas (jamaica, horchata, lemonade) are extremely generous. Don’t forget to bring cash, as there is a card surcharge." - McConnell Quinn

The carnitas was way better than the asada. The salsas were just ok. Unusual to have cabbage and onion as toppings and no cilantro? They are good tacos but it’s overrated imo and it’s not actually cheaper than other taco places that taste better to make it worthwhile as a go to food truck. My wife loved the chocoflan tho and would come back for that.

Google
First time here. They took card, Got some pastor tacos, really good tacos, Hot and Fresh. The meat is chopped up small and cooked perfect which I like. Will be back. They have a big parking lot 👍👍

Is there a better place to get good foodcart food than a sketchy neighborhood? I don't think so.

After an electrifying concert, I indulged in a late-night dinner at a charming food truck. The casual outdoor seating was not only comfortable but also set a relaxed, welcoming tone for the evening. Every dish we tried was served fresh and hot, bursting with flavor. The al pastor torta was deeply satisfying, and the Birria tacos were perfectly seasoned, accompanied by a consomé that was rich and delicious.

Google
Very kind ladies serving delicious food. Meet tender and soft, everything well spiced and fresh. Absolutely loved it and hope to come back again.

Google
Really great late night Mexican food truck. Had tacos - al pastor and chorizo. Full of meat and flavors. The service is quick and people are very friendly. The tacos came out so hot and fresh that we actually had to wait a while to dig into the deliciousness!

Google
After our evening activities we decided to stop find a place for a late night dinner. And then it was after midnight there were that many choices but we ran across a food truck called La Frontera 1. They had exactly what we wanted, and they accepted cash or credit cards. It was almost like faith. The El Pastor tacos and California burrito for incredibly delicious! And washing it down with a real Mexican Coca-Cola topped off the night! Don't expect a nice dining area. This is an outdoor style seating, but the food definitely makes up for it!

Yelp
$4.25 for ONE Chicharrón taco is insaneeee! Mind you-- the "chicharrón" was cut up in tiny tiny little pieces -- a scam! Andddd i didnt really taste it. It wasn't good at all 1/10. $3.25 for ONE asada taco. The taco was good. Nothing unique but good 8/10. The limonada was $5 and that was the best of those 3 items! 10/10. I came here bc I work nearby, but never again will I go here for tacos. I rather go to El Asadero" , across the street! (Which btw their lemonade just as FIRE too) . Idk $18 for 3 tacos & a drink doesn't sit right with me. Now I know why it's empty

Yelp
After a long day at the Phoenix convention center, we realize that we didn't have a snack to eat so on the way to the freeway decided to stop by my old stomping ground food truck spot. There are usually two different trucks in the parking lot the first one has Tacos, Burritos, and more while the second one is more seafood base and also has the infamous Sonoran hotdogs. It was hard to not go all out and get dinner, so instead decided to get the Carnes asada tacos & Burrito (to split) along with a side of rice & beans. They weren't stingy with the meat and it packed flavor. Man, they both are on point & hit the spot for us. If you have cash, a bonus as they do tac on a small fee for credit cards. Food didn't take long and was compliment with 2 ice cold Cokes from the ice chest!!!

Yelp
Food is on point. Service is great. It helps to know a little Spanish. This is a good truck with some permanent seating.

Yelp
I have been here in 2017, which was 6 years ago and loved the tacos I had and had to come here this time while I was visiting Arizona. Monday late morning, it was not busy but some people were there. We got two burritos con carne asada. $11 even each, however, they do charge credit card fee of $1. So, it came out to $23 for two burritos. I saw most of the people were paying in cash. The food was beyond amazing. We had fancy Mexican food in Sedona which we were not amazed by the taste but surprised by the price. This place just made us happy in all ways. The amount of meat in the burrito, all the ingredients and seasoning making great harmony together, the service and the reasonable price! However, it is a food truck so it was a little bit chilly as it was cloudy and their tent above us doesn't block the wind blowing from the side. Nevertheless, this is a great Mexican food spot for sure.

Yelp
Best taco truck in AZ! The tacos are tasty and authentic. I also love that you can hit this place up on the late night.
google avatar

Jorge M.

Yelp
Not recommended is to expensive for 2 people $48 dollars not worth it and the tacos are to small for the price stay away from this truck
google avatar

Darya S.

Yelp
This was A-OK. I believe their unique selling point is their late hours that they're open - they know their audience. Be careful being here late at night, as it gets sketchy. I don't think I would have felt safe even ordering and eating inside my car if I wasn't with my husband. I got the asada, lengua, barbacoa, and pollo tacos. Two of each, eight tacos total for $28. I don't appreciate the extra $1 charge for credit card transactions, especially since they don't tell you until they're charging you. There's no sign that says so, either. Anyway, they all pretty much tasted the same. My husband said they were dry, right after we got them. The barbacoa was the one that stood out to me. I wish there pollo was more properly marinated. I will say, the green salsa is super fresh and the orange one packs a punch!

Marcos M.

Yelp
Terrible service prices and they don't explain what they put in the food . Overall bad experience

Jorge Martinez M.

Yelp
Is not worth it is to expensive and the food is not cooked right for 2 person $47 that's crazy and the little tacos almost $4 that's to expensive don't came here you will regret it
google avatar

Yelp
I didn't take any pictures, but I got to say this place is the real deal! The pictures are definitely representative. We went after the Dodgers Diamondbacks game one evening, and it was pretty mobbed, but so worth going!
google avatar

Jose Manuel T.

Yelp
This place used to be the spot to be after a long night at the club. But I feel like they are loosing their essence. At least is my opinion. Would I still go to eat there? Yeah....
google avatar

Kevin P.

Yelp
Very good tasting tacos. They have a few trucks ready to serve and the food was what I expected. Would come again and recommend this place!
google avatar

Amanda B.

Yelp
If you're looking for fresh authetic tacos in the Phoenix area after a long hike look no further. The beef tongue was soft and juicy, chicken was charred to perfection. Feel iffy about trying organ meat? They don't overdue the grease and the homemade sauces were exceptionally spicy. The biggest plus was they are also such kind people in a rather shady area. 10/10

N A.

Yelp
Solid late night spot, burrito was FILLED with carne asada. Staff had the car with Ciudad Chihuahua plates so I knew it was gonna be authentic.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
Hands down some of the best street tacos I've tried. The pastor is full of flavor and the asada has the perfect crisp to it. They give you some yummy salsas and grilled onions if you request them. This place is so good my mother in law who lives out of state would literally plan her flight into to phoenix right before lunch time so we could take her here every time!

Fernando S.

Yelp
under cook got the fresh water had no flavor and 6 dollars a taco not worth don't recommend it i felt rob

Michael M.

Yelp
It was decent generic Mexican food it not to crazy like everyone's saying how it's the best perfectly seasoned no Its just regular Mexican food not the best either a good 5 out of 10 it was over priced 50 Bucks for 8 tacos n a burrito very overrated
google avatar

Julia S.

Yelp
You can always expect authenticity and humility from taco trucks in Arizona. This truck is open late, and serves great food. Stopped by after a long flight home, and was impressed by the amount of meat they put in their tacos. The prices are not outrageous (8 tacos, 2 sodas for about $32), but they're not dirt cheap either. In terms of quality, the tacos were good - not the best, not the worst. Their guacamole was not great, and the salsa was not all that spicy; the cucumbers on the side did not taste fresh tho. That being said, I would definitely return! I am a fan!

Perla R.

Yelp
Good food and service. Love that is open late on the weekend especially after a bar.

Anthony S.

Yelp
Tacos are so bomb and fresh here! #SCRUMPTIOUS ! There's only a handful of great tacos spots and this is hands down one of the best!
google avatar

Ridalby A.

Yelp
If you're in downtown Phoenix and want some authentic Mexican tacos from a food truck then stop by this spot. It hits different especially on a Tuesday. I ordered 3 chicken tacos and my girlfriend ordered 3 carne asada. We both thought it was lovely. The food was ready in a couple minutes as when we got there it was empty. The chicken tacos tasted just how I wanted them to!
google avatar

Michael F.

Yelp
This was the most delicious burrito I have ever had...a must stop for lunch after an early flight in PHX!!

Yelp
Just like my fellow Yelp compadres Jimmy P, Cher-Yee L & Sohan P, I'm a huge fan of La Frontera! Major props to Cher-Yee for introducing me to this place in summer 2017. I was a little leery when he gave me the cross-streets -- it's not exactly in the greatest area of Phoenix -- and the parking lot is a bit of a hot mess express. What location lacks for makes up for everything else. You know it's authentic Mexican if they serve cabeza (juicy tender meat from around the head of a cow), of which I've ordered every time. Pro tip: no hablen ingles, so might want to bring Google Translate if you're one who no habla español. Or just say "Yo quiero _____". Get a cabeza burrito! They're seriously almost the size of my lower arm. And only $6 cash! Add in horchata (one size only, also the size of my lower arm) and you'll be well-fed for less than $10. In the last 2 months, I've been in NorCen Phoenix 2xand purposefully driven to La Frontera on my way home. One of those times I was able to save most of the burrito for the next day's lunch. Makes for amazing leftovers! Buen comida!

Yelp
My FAVORITE place to eat Mexican food. They are always delicious. When I am wanting something yummy i almost always say let eat here. The service is wonderful. I have eaten in the restaurant an have gotten great takeout. If you want something good give this place a try.

Yelp
Hungry. Late night 1am Taco run. Difficult location to find maybe for the first time, next to a Jack In The Box in the back area parking lot. Maybe harder to spot from the side of the road. Just a food truck. Ordering was easy, preferably done in Spanish. They have the menu on the side so it's not too hard. Cash only* Wait time was fairly quick, around like 5 minutes. But then again there wasn't that long of a line. I tried the carne asada, Barbacoa, al pastor tacos. I believe the carne asada was my favorite one it was very moist. The Tacos hit the spot when you're hungry at night Comes with lime and cucumbers. And they have to Salsas the green and the red sauce. I prefer to mix both the sauce on the taco. There may be some cats around, if you're allergic to them. But there was only one. Overall, a good experience and probably my top taco place for now. No issues with parking as this is in a parking lot. Definitely recommended.

Yelp
My favorite hot dogs with yellow chiles. I've been coming here for years and it's always been great food and customer service. They have two trucks- taco truck and mariscos along with Mexican hot dogs. They have some real good horchata at the taco truck, too. Bring cash only!
google avatar

Kaylynn D.

Yelp
my boyfriend and i just got 8 tacos and two horchatas, these have to be the BEST street tacos we've ever had! reasonably priced and super fast service. we placed our order and not even 3 minutes later she was telling us our order was done with a smile! they do take card, im not sure why it says they don't. perfect tucked away food truck with some bomb food!

Jorge F.

Yelp
Weird vibes at night. Definitely need a gun to feel safe. Apart from area horrible customer service they also do not take Apple Pay even tho their site says it does.
google avatar

Yelp
Sonoran hotdogs are apparently a thing and because I love hotdogs, I made sure to stop by to try one. The hotdogs run $3 bucks a pop. I (think) there's coating of beans on the hotdog, and is topped with tomatoes, onions, jalepeños, and shredded cheese. The bun was toasted and robust enough to withstand the medley of toppings. The hotdog was great - it was unlike anything I have ever tasted. I liked that touch of beans because it gave it this distinct flavor. Not much to complain about considering it was three bucks. The truck is located on a vacated lot - there are two La Frontera trucks. The one you want to hit up for a Sonoran hotdog is #3.

Yelp
I have never had anything so good in my life. Perfectly seasoned, authentic preparation, ingredients, fresh, layers of flavor built upon one another. I imagine I could move to Phoenix just for this. Its like a bunch of Mexican grandmas got together to make the most exceptional, loving meals a taco truck could make. This is no hipster food truck. This is a gem and a taste of home. First visit, I had Carne Asada Tacos (excellent), Chorizo Con Crema tacos (Delicious and rich), but my favorite of all was when I came back the next day and had the Cabeza Burrito. Ohh my goodness. This was the best burrito I have had in recent memory, likely ever, and I have been all over the country and every major city in most every mexican district in my travels. This was stewed so tender, seasoned so well and balanced with spice and fat (especially with the fresh lime squeezed over), perfectly melted cheese, layers upon layers of flavor... It was amazing... like I heard the voice of God himself as I tasted it. The salsa verde too was great and a perfect match to this along with the refreshing cucumbers on the side. The senorita was peering over from the window watching me enjoy it. I gladly gave her the thumbs up and told her it was soooo good. She replied with a sweet Thank You. She knows. Thank you so much La Frontera

Yelp
07/14/2018 Great authentic flavors if your looking for some tacos. Dining is outdoors & food prepared inside food truck. I wish they had more salsa selection since I enjoy spicy food. El pastor meat had good seasoning flavors. Burritos are huge come with an appetite.
google avatar

Yelp
One of the best in the valley for Mexican food, our family love the vampiros, tacos, and burritos. They also take Card now. and take out orders
google avatar

Yelp
What a wonderful experience even in 98 degree heat. Sat outside, lovely breeze. It's the way America use to be. It use to be (individuals / families) owned all the restaurants before the corporate raider barbarians stole all the corner lots across the country in every town city, and hamlet. Individual entrepreneurs / families put in everything they had to give the best food , best service. That's what we got even with my terrible Spanish , bad memory. Delicious fish tacos. Delicious cheeseburger. Reasonable price. Bring cash, and your Spanish dictionary. Nice people, fun sitting under the shady tent. Strike up a conversation, make new friends, then go home and smoke a huge doobie. Life is good. Don't forget to vote blue in 22 all the way.
google avatar

Brenda R.

Yelp
I know what you're thinking it's a food truck how good can it be? Well let me tell you it was delicious and if you're ever in the area and hungry you will not regret stopping here. They have 2 different food trucks one that has Sonoran hot dogs and seafood. The other has tacos, burritos, and other Mexican food dishes. It was four of us that ordered different foods and we all tried each other's, and I have to say every single thing I tried was soooooo delicious!!! I can't say that enough to be honest. I also had an horchata which I can tell was homemade and not made from the powder packages so super thumbs up there. They also have two seating areas and plenty of parking. I know that every time im in the area I will stop by and make sure to show up with an empty belly.

Yelp
When I told people back home I was moving to Phoenix, I always got one of two responses: "It's hot as hell... but it's a dry heat" and "I hope you like Mexican food." Well as luck would have it, I'm a major taco guy, and La Frontera is the real deal. It's in a parking lot behind a Jack in the Box, and the eating space is constituted by a few tables outside under a tarp with pigeons and a stray cat hanging around. In my opinion all of that really authenticates the whole experience. They have all the meat choices found at any legit taco shop, and they do them well. Someone once told me you can really judge the quality of a good taco place by their tortillas. Well, this place definitely makes their own and fries em up to perfection. I would definitely recommend the asada, lengua, al pastor, and chicharon tacos -- maybe the cabeza if you like some good head ;) Also the chili verde burrito is a delicious, fat ol thang at $6. Throw some cilantro-lime crema sauce on that bad boy and settle in for the ride pal. They're open late night and are pretty much the perfect way to cap off a Friday or Saturday night downtown. Also, I went another time Sunday afternoon, and there was a lady selling fresh caramel churros out of a plastic Walmart bin. Do yourself a favor and buy like ten of em. Cash only, and helps if you speak Spanish.

Chen W.

Yelp
Taste just like street tacos in Mexico, Very authentic and service was amazing! Highly recommend if you looking for a piece of Mexico
google avatar

Yelp
Brush up on your Spanish and get ready to try the best burrito Phoenix has to offer. This food truck doesn't seem like much at first glance. It sits in an open parking lot by the Jack in the Box on 16th and Van Buren. Tables are under a covered area and you'll likely see some people there trying to sell random knickknacks. It's possible you may even hear a couple ambulances go by. But if you're in the area, this is a must stop. This is a local hangout spot and you'll be pressed to act the part. Check out the menu, use Google translate if you have to, and you'll likely need to make your order in Spanish. If that doesn't scream, "this is authentic," I don't know what does. Pro tip: the food truck is cash only. They're open until 2am and I can assure you, there are still people lined up at 1:45am to get food. The burrito de chile verde with carne de cebrada (shredded beef) is an instant classic and only costs $6. They'll serve it to you in foil while it's still incredibly hot, and give you a plate of cucumber to help you cool down. If you're not a fan of shredded beef, I had a friend substitute the beef with pollo (chicken) and another friend went a bit more wild and substituted in cabeza (brain). Get the salsas too as they are amazing. Just don't overindulge on the red if you can't handle spicy food. Apart from the food, make sure to get the horchata which is $2.25. It comes in a huge cup, is an amazing complement to the meal, and provides you that extra bit of sweetness to make the whole experience complete. Seriously, what are you waiting for? This place is amazing.

Nichole C.

Yelp
This isn't Mexico tacos if your trying to find a taco truck like it but it's alright that's why I gave them a 4. The horchata tho, supposed to be thick and sweet but it wasn't I hope they can change this in the future. The price is good and service as well
google avatar

Mike J.

Yelp
Great food. Fast service. We had chicken and pork tacos, beef burrito, and my fave was the El Pastor burrito! Really good guacamole sauce in squeeze bottle along with a red sauce. Not to spicy, just right. Burros came with cucumber slices, and everyone got half a lime.
google avatar

Mabel R.

Yelp
This place is a taco truck on a parking lot with tables and chairs available to sit. The place is clean and the tacos are delicious. The tortillas look and taste homemade and they give you a lot of meat. I brought the hubby here for his birthday because he specifically asked for tacos. We came here around 10:30pm on a Saturday night after a show at the Herberger Theater. We ordered cabeza, lengua, chicharon, and carne asada tacos. All meats were tender and flavorful, so you don't need to add anything else but they do give you two different salsas, limes, and some cucumber slices with your order. The cabeza meat was juicy which I like. We both ordered jamaica juice and were pleased that it wasn't too sweet. Sanitation wise, I really like that someone takes your order and money, then a different person makes your food. The hubby loved it here and says we're coming back!
google avatar

Christa M.

Yelp
These food truck tacos are so darn good! The al pastor tacos are my fave and I come and eat here just for them! The meat is spicy, juicy, and has such great flavor. Get it with the toppings (cabbage, onion, cilantro) and bam your mouth will thank you later. Also, make sure to squirt on the green and red salsas! Don't let the location steer you away from this place since it does tend to appear a little sketchy! I've eaten here at different times of the day and I have never felt uncomfortable! Oh and it's CASH ONLY!
google avatar

Christian W.

Yelp
the tacos are decent but there are too many homeless in the area asking for money makes me not want to go. it's hard to sit and enjoy the meal never fails one comes up and bothers you.
google avatar

Johnny S.

Yelp
This is probably supposed to be a secret, but... this is the best Mexican food in Arizona. Yep. Said it. Come here and say otherwise! Carne asada is perfection. Street tacos at their very best. Everything is cooked on the spot. I am so glad I found this place. Any time I'm remotely close I have to stop and get a taco or burrito. Cash only

Maria R.

Yelp
Have tried a few breakfast burritos in Phoenix and this is the best. My daughter got a chicken and it was also outstanding. Highly recommend. It's a street food / food truck vibe which is a nice atmosphere, I often prefer to a restaurant. Extremely nice staff. For the food adventurous they also have cow head (brains) tripe tongue etc.
google avatar

Monica C.

Yelp
It's amazing, we'll be back! Long over due visit to try this place! Not even sure where to start this one...so many moving parts to this review ~ try to stay with me! La Frontera truck numero #1 ~ we ordered carne asada tacos, quesadilla de carne asada and all of was so delicious. I loved the really small diced cabbage on everything! Next ~ Truck numero #3 we ordered an obscene amount of Sonoran hot dogs! They were freaking amazing! So while we were walking 20-30 steps to get from #1 to #3 we purchased a fresh donut, it was delicious! While we sat at the table of truck #3, another vendor came up with fresh pan de calabaza (pumpkin empanadas) they were really good! As we sit here stuffed, we plan our next trip here. You will not regret coming here! Until next time feast your eyes on these pics! Wasn't able to slow down and take pics of everything...oops

Yelp
I'd actually give this a 3.5 if I could. It's definitely your authentic Mexican street tacos with homemade corn tortillas. I find it hard to find decent al pastor tacos in the valley, which keeps me coming back. Price is pretty good as well for your typical meats ($2 a taco). There's a few items on the taco list that they charge for $3. Not sure if they have a taco Tuesday discount. I've had the al pastor, pollo asado, and carne asada. All are pretty descent, but could hold back on the chicken though. I do find that they all lack flavor, and could use more salt. I find myself having to drench the tacos in their guac sauce and red mild sauce (these also lack flavor as well). You can also ask for cooked onions and Serrano peppers, which gives a lot more flavor to the tacos. Overall, it's nothing I crave, unless I want al pastor tacos for a good price. They have a few spots through out the valley. Also have specific trucks for seafood/mariscos.

Erika C.

Yelp
La Frontera #1 and #2 are the spots for authentic tacos. Super delicious! All the meat options they have for tacos, burritos, quesadillas and Tortas are excellent.
google avatar

Ka shoua Y.

Yelp
They speak very little English but the food is sooooo fresh and flavorful. I always get Al pastor, Carne asade and lengua. My favorite is the pastor. It explodes with flavor in your mouth and it's sooo juicy! I take all my friends here who want authentic Mexican. Who doesn't love taco trucks?! PS. Green salsa is better than red.

Yelp
On my trip to Phoenix, I set out to find something local and unique to the tune of cow head and tongue tacos and a Sonoran hot dog from a taco truck. From what I can tell, La Frontera is one of the only places you can get a Sonoran hot dog during the day. Most of them are parked later in the day, ready for bar goers. The funny thing was is that there were actually two trucks on site, and only one of them served the dogs so I ended up at both. Chicago has its celery salt and pickles, and New York has its sauerkraut and mustard, but in Phoenix, they've got Sonoran dogs. Hot dogs are never my go to food but this combination is BOMB. The Sonoran-style hot dog, found also in Tucson and in neighboring Sonora, Mexico, is a hot dog wrapped in mesquite-smoked bacon then cooked on a grill then topped with beans, grilled onions, fresh onions, tomatoes, mayonnaise, cream sauce, mustard and Jalapeno salsa or sauce and served on bread and often with a side fresh-roasted chili. It originated in Hermosillo, the capital of Sonora. I also ordered a cow head (brain) and cow tongue taco. I'd had cow tongue as a youngster so I wasn't too surprised but the meat of both was mushier than I'd like. I'm also not a huge fan of the corn tortillas but the cilantro and cucumbers were refreshing. I felt a little out of place here. Everyone else was Mexican and non-English speaking but we managed. Despite the language barrier, I got what I wanted and he even knew I didn't know where to get the Mexican coke I ordered so he stepped out of the truck to show me the ice chest along the front. I thought that was pretty nice. Cash only! SUPER cheap.
