La Olla

"For a restaurant with decades of history behind it, La Olla looks rather ordinary and would be easy to pass by on the street without a second thought. Alas, Chef Pilar Cabrera is a name to know. A champion of traditional Oaxacan dishes and an ambassador for the region, she has run this restaurant and her own cooking school, Casa de Los Sabores, for over 20 years. A comal by the front door is your signal to start with the maiz sampler featuring squash blossom quesadillas and crispy plantain tacos smeared in a finely spiced coloradito. No meal is complete without the mole negro, which is wonderful by itself but stunning with the clever addition of plantain and sweet potato purees. The menu also features a generous number of vegetarian dishes." - Michelin Inspector

"Delectable Oaxacan Specialties Run by the talented Chef Pilar Cabrera, who also offers cooking classes through Casa de los Sabores, La Olla is an unpretentious restaurant offering Oaxacan specialties. Head to the upper-level dining room, which is more spacious than the ground floor, with artwork by local artists. The moles are delicious, but to start, order the squash blossom soup. A beautifully arranged bowl with squash blossoms and seeds with some queso fresco and cream is placed in front of you, then the waiter pours the soup over it. It tastes as good as it looks. Open 8 am to 10 pm Monday through Saturday. Closed Sundays. La Olla offers a set meal between 1:30 and 4 pm - check the website for the daily menu."

I came here for drinks last night! It was a cute little restaurant with young employees who spoke pretty good English. They were super helpful and professional. I had their Mezcalina cocktails, a passion fruit and a mango. The passion fruit was delicious! The drink was sweet and tangy with the aroma of passion fruit. The mango was just mediocre. It was good but not great!

La Olla in Oaxaca Centro is a fantastic spot with delicious, well-balanced flavors that truly showcase Oaxacan cuisine. The ambiance is warm and inviting, and the service is attentive and welcoming, making for a memorable dining experience. I visited with vegetarian friends, and while they enjoyed their meals, I felt the menu could offer a greater variety of vegetarian and pescatarian options. More plant-based dishes and a wider selection of fish would make the experience even better, catering to a broader range of dietary preferences. That said, the quality of ingredients, presentation, and overall experience were excellent, and I would definitely return.

This evening, I had the pleasure of experiencing mole at La Olla in Oaxaca, and it was absolutely fantastic! The mole here is truly special, made from a blend of dried chilies, chocolate, and distinctive spices, creating an unforgettable sweet, spicy, and fragrant flavor. The cozy atmosphere and attentive staff made the experience even more perfect. Mole is a traditional Mexican dish known for its complex flavor profile, combining various dried chilies, chocolate, and spices. Each region has its own way of making mole, resulting in unique and diverse tastes. Mole is often served with chicken, pork, or other dishes, offering a distinctive culinary experience. La Olla deserves a full 5-star rating for its exquisite food and impeccable service.

Google
This was the best mole (by far) that I found in Oaxaca city. In my opinion the food and service was better than other Michelin restaurants I tried in the city. The space is quaint and comfortable. The waiter we had in the afternoon was knowledgeable and attentive making the experience even better. I ended up at La Olla twice on my trip because of how amazing the food and service was.

Google
I’m honestly baffled by some of the negative reviews—this place is fantastic. Every time I’ve visited, the food, service, and atmosphere have been consistently excellent. It’s clear that a lot of care goes into every detail. On my most recent visit, the server was incredibly warm and attentive, the food arrived impressively fast, and the prices were more than reasonable—especially for a Michelin-recognized restaurant. Let’s be real: Michelin doesn’t hand out honors to places that don’t deliver a good experience. Some of the older negative reviews are honestly laughable—many seem like they were written by people determined to find fault, not give fair feedback. Plus, a few are nearly a decade old. A lot can change in that time, and this restaurant clearly has evolved for the better. Bottom line: it’s absolutely worth a visit. Don’t let the haters steer you wrong!

Google
This restaurant is overpriced for the quality of food you get. The margarita, as pictured, was decorated with an old and dried lemon. To top it off, they didn’t bring any tortillas with the main course, and when I asked for a second napkin, they gave me a cheaper one.

I truly enjoyed this dining experience. The chocolate ice cream was the best! Cacao chips enhanced flavors!

Google
A perfect Christmas Eve meal. We had a fabulous time, I especially recommend the tamale, and the chocolate dessert. And the rompope was also wonderful.

Yelp
Chef Pilar Cabrera brilliantly showcases traditional Oaxacan cuisine - from mole to squash flowers to chapulines - in a quiet, unassuming nook off the busy streets of the city. The flavors are bold, the textures balanced, and the quality worthy of a Michelin bib. A plus is having plenty of vegetarian options, without sacrificing the taste. Highly recommend.

Yelp
We were the only ones there, think we were a bit early for dinner. Very cute spot with bright decorations. Food was fresh and great. Staff was super friendly. Our Spanish is little to none and their English the same. We made it work and shared many laughs in the meantime. Loved the guaq with dried fish.

Yelp
We went to La Olla on a whim because we were feeling indecisive for dinner. We did arrive pretty early (somewhere around 5) and they were able to seat us easily. They have a lot of unique corn-based dishes, so we tried the taquitos de quesillo, comal de maíz, tamal oaxaqueño, and the flan (I think it changes seasonally - ours had popcorn on it). We loved how simple and flavorful each dish was. It was a great meal to end our trip to Oaxaca!

Yelp
Good food We had a lovely dinner at this restaurant where we tried a couple of dishes for the first time. We loved our guacamole with tlayudas, and we tried the chapulinas (grasshoppers) and mole for the first time. The chapulinas and mole were not really to our taste, but the food was beautifully cooked and presented and the staff were really lovely. We did think that the portions were a little small!

Yelp
Absolutely one of my favorites local flairs... the decors, foos tasting, fresh ingredients, super friendly staff, and absolute simple menu. A party of 6 was easily handled & enjoyed the whole time. I have tried a few places in the area, but this one really prompted me with this urgency of a review. It is absolutely recommended for all the Yelpers. Be a good and responsible visitor: to make reservations, to show up, to be respectful with the staff, to take your time & enjoy the whole dining experience, be patient with the pace (appreciative of what it has to offer = enjoy the moment), and order dessert . Happy travel & Dining !

Yelp

Yelp
We walked by here a couple of days earlier and were warned that you must make a reservation in order to eat here. We arrived on time, or at least the time we had in our calendar only to be told they had given away our table. They did ask us to wait a little bit and within 5 minutes they had a table [felt a little like they want you to think it's very exclusive]; food overall was excellent ; very inventive and nicely presented. Reasons it's not 5 star? You can only have their cocktails, or beer or non alcoholic cocktail which are both expensive and not terribly good despite two bartenders (margaritas for instance will not be made but you can have a cilantro mojito); service is just okay, server didn't spend much time explaining complex dishes; despite higher prices, cheapest paper napkins... this in the capital of all woven materials in all of Mexico! Clearly caters to Americans who want to tick it off their list.

Yelp
Finger lickin' good!! We ordered lengua with green sauce and beef with mole. Meat were very juicy and tender. Beef tongue were tender and no bad taste which shows it was cleaned and cooked properly. The blue tortilla was tasty. It's just home cooking for sure! Also the kitchen was clean. I would have given them 5 stars but the rice was a fail. Too soggy. Service amazing too!!!

Megha A.

Yelp
Very good food and decent cocktails. Everything was good proportions and tasty. We stopped by for a late lunch and the terrace was closed but the middle level had a great ambiance and overlooked the street below. I dont remember the names for all the dishes but the mixed appetizer plate was excellent as well as the guacamole.

Yelp
Came here for a late lunch with my 2 travel companions when we were in Oaxaca last month after looking it up on Yelp beforehand. Place seems to be quite popular with the tourists (though, to be fair, it's probably hard to find a place in the heart of Oaxaca without running into a few tourists). Since this was going to be our first meal in Oaxaca, one of my friends and I opted to get tlayudas, while my other friend opted for something else. We all also shared an order of their guacamole, which came with their signature in-house crunchy, crispy tortillas. My tlayuda was fine, but oh so messy to eat. The guac was delicious, and my friends seemed to have liked their meals as well. I also got a super large glass of their jamaica (or, sorrel, if you're in the Caribbean), which was unfortunately not as good as I had wished. Everything else was fine. Service was attentive and friendly. The restaurant itself is beautiful, with 2 different seating levels for patrons. It's a more expensive meal to be had in Oaxaca, but the ambiance was nice.

Yelp
La Olla is a great choice for lunch or dinner in Centro. Be aware that you have to share the stairs to the upper-level dining area with the wait staff bringing food up from the kitchen. Once you're seated, expect a pleasant dining experience, beginning with a pleasant waitstaff all the way to a delicious meal. The guac was excellent and served with both bread and tortillas (not chips). The shrimp were huge and very flavorful and the chicken soup was fabulous --served in a copper kettle with 2 handles-- the broth rich and flavorful, the chicken and vegies abundant. We saved room for dessert and loved the flan, served with a swirl of chocolate sauce. La Olla is a must-stop on the list of excellent Oaxacan restaurants.

Yelp
Really good! Renowned chef Pilar Cabrera gives cooking classes- which I am annoyed I couldn't work into my trip. Famous for their moles - I had the Chichilo with steak. The Chichilo was very bitter but was outstanding with bites of the steak. I LOVED the organic salad. One of the best salads I ever ate. Oaxaca is a great town with spectacular food. It's easy to just eat market and street food- so fantastic and ridiculously cheap. This place felt like a splurge (if $20 after tip is a splurge), but it was a wonderful place and a memorable meal

Yelp
Service is slow for Mexico but very clean and great people. Fabulous food fabulous time lots of authentic fun.

Yelp
Great rooftop to relax and enjoy a drink or two. Guac was Mole enchiladas were really good too

Yelp
My meal at La Olla was probably the most disappointing of our trip. My expectations were high, given all of the glowing reviews I've read, but the food and service were both substandard. We were brought salsa to start and it was good, but I didn't love the chips, which reminded me a little of communion wafers. We chose to start with guacamole, which was good, but we ran out of chips before it was gone, and were never brought any more. Our waiter came to the table only when he absolutely had to, to take our drink and food order (at the same time, after we'd been sitting at the table for quite awhile), to bring the appetizer, and to bring our food. He never asked if we needed more drinks. He never came to check if we needed anything (in my boyfriend's case, a steak knife) after dropping off our food. I had to go find him to ask for the check. It was somewhat frustrating. My boyfriend was served skirt steak with vegetables that had obviously been grilled, but were as cold as though they'd just been pulled from the refrigerator. He said the skirt steak was good, but cutting it with a butter knife was somewhat challenging. My entree was enchiladas with mole negro and Colorado. I love mole and have had it several times, and this mole was, at the very best, mediocre. The enchiladas themselves were just okay. I'm still pretty bummed about La Olla. My vacation isn't long enough to go to bad restaurants.

Mario E.

Yelp
The staff was polite and attentive. The mezcal was very good. The dining room had a good vibe and a great view. So why am I giving this place a 3 star review? The mole was tepid and the tortillas were borderline cold. As a Mexican I was disappointed. I also fault myself for not sending the food back. It may have been an off night for the kitchen as it seems most of the reviewers liked this place.
google avatar

Mina N.

Yelp
Omg the food here is amazing. My favorite so far were the quesadillas. We also tried the Jamaica enchiladas that were amazing in a mole sauce. Also to the table the Oaxaca tamale. We wanted to try the desserts. So we must return. And you definitely must visit. This is an out of the box thinking restaurant.

Yelp
Beautiful airy friendly restaurant....the food was delicious and the staff friendly. Upscale without being pretentious or spendy.

Yelp
I decided to eat at La Olla after my Mezcál tour guide told me about it. It was our last night in Oaxaca, and i wanted a special dinner. La Olla took that from me. We arrived at 5 p.m. on Ash Wednesday. There was only one other small party seated when we arrived. We were a party of seven. After we were seated, it took about fifteen minutes for them to take our order. The waiter brought us our drinks, and we sat. A half hour after we placed our order, another party that arrived after us received their food. I asked the waiter to check on our order, and he said it was on the way. Another fifteen minutes later and forty-five minutes after ordering, our appetizers and meals arrived at the same time. The soup we ordered was good, but that was it. Our mixed grill appetizer was room temperature. If they prepared it first then why didn't they bring it? But wait, the "mole enchiladas" were cold, too. How is that even possible? Mole is liquid that is poured hot over tortillas when making enchiladas. The octopus tostadas were cold, and the grilled fish. The other items we ordered were all meh. I asked to speak to the manager. He came by and I explained the situation, showing him our cold food and asking how this was possible when the restaurant was basically empty. He thanked me for my feedback and said it was helpful that we told him what was going on. He never asked how he could make things right or what he could do for us. I consider that a very poor response to a complaint of serious service and food temperature issues. I cannot recommend this restaurant under any circumstances.

Yelp
One of the best meals I have had in Oaxaca and the evening rooftop views are spectacular. My husband loved the mole (verde with fish and I had a tuna dish with mushroom rice that was delicious.
google avatar

Aaron O.

Yelp
La Olla has some of the best flan you'll find in Oaxaca! Rich and creamy perfection! The fresh bitter chocolate sauce on the side is a great touch. As for the other dishes, the portions are generous and the quality is excellent. Traditional foods with modern presentation. The staff is really nice, too. I definitely recommend it!
google avatar

Joe A.

Yelp
We stopped here just for a quick bite between meals. Amazing flavors, good enough we have planned dinner here. The guacamole was perfect and we tried a local sampler (appetizer). Cant say anything bad at all. My wife loved the house made Jamaica.
google avatar

Victoire C.

Yelp
Food was increíble. Make sure to go sit on the upstairs terrace. It has a stunning view. Overall excellent experience.

Yelp
We only had one day here in Oaxaca, and we came here for dinner. We enjoyed it, all around! The food was very good, the restaurant was clean and the decor was fun, yet simple. The bathrooms had a change table - always a plus! And the location is very close to the zocalo. We shared the mango salad - crispy lettuce, good avocado, and sweet delicious mango pieces, and for our mains we shared a chile relleno, a tlayuda, and the steak. For me, the chile relleno was the weakest link because the chile they stufffed had a very smoky taste, which is not really my thing. My husband really enjoyed it though. Everything was cooked really well. Oh yes, and the waitstaff were friendly and helpful!
google avatar

Fabián J.

Yelp
i highly recommend this spot for dinner. the staff is very welcoming and kind and, in addition to delicious food, the atmosphere is charming. be sure to save room for flan at the end of your meal! i'm definitely stopping by "la olla" again!
google avatar

Rachelle C.

Yelp
This is a relaxed charming cafe run by the family that owns 3 B&Bs in central Oaxaca. The food is traditional Oaxacan and beautifully prepared with freshest ingredients by chef Pilar Cabrera, a noted Oaxacan chef. Be sure to buy her easy to follow cookbook in English. We loved the complex moles on pork or beef filet. The dorado fish in yellow mole with a smear of spicy mole was amazing. Her corn squash blossom, corn squash soup is light, all veggie and delicious. It's a small cafe with a rooftop for drinks or a casual snack. Better yet, take a half day cooking class from Pilar which includes a trip to the market, hands on cooking and eating your meal. It's the very best!
google avatar

Maria A.

Yelp
Great place, close to downtown Oaxaca. The food was pretty good, we loved some times like the fresh cheese wrapped in hoja santa (amazing flavor!) and the beef in yellow mole (the meat melted in your mouth, perfectly cook). We had a 100% corn appetizer which include it taquitos, quesadilla and memelas, it was good but not the corn preparation we had in Oaxaca. The place itself is beautifully decorated with very nice murals all over the room. The service was great and we had a great experience overall.
google avatar

Pamela O.

Yelp
Best restaurant in Oaxaca by far!!! Super fresh, simple and amazingly delicious. Everything I had was exceptional and I'm a Chef!
google avatar

Adam B.

Yelp
Not sure why this place is so popular. To start, they have a chain on the door to keep people waiting outside...when there was an almost empty restaurant inside. After being seated we found the service to be terrible. We waited far too long for everything, to the point where I thought that they had forgotten our order. In the end we did not receive a drink we ordered and the food was very mediocre. No locals were inside, which should have been the first red flag. Definitely not coming back.
google avatar

Kaison T.

Yelp
We went for breakfast, which is probably not the best time. I have heard great things about this restaurant, but in the morning, the tamales are cold and the sauces lukewarm. If you try this place, don't go in the morning!
google avatar

Astrid C.

Yelp
In our week in Oaxaca we came to La Olla twice because the food was light but very delicious. The organic salad was very good and there black bean soup was to die for! The staff was also super friendly and welcoming! Definitely check out and try their mango mezcal drink, it was very good!
google avatar

Caryn W.

Yelp
We sat on the roof and had a table by the window. Tasty cocktails and attentive and informative service. We had the crema de flor sopa which was very delicious. We also ordered the tamal oaxaqueno - it was good, I think we just aren't into that type of mole. VERY clean bathrooms.

Trudy M.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this restaurant and had a delicious full meal of the day. Actually like a dinner so tonight we will eat super lightly. We sat upstairs, overlooking the street. Besides the regular menu they have a fixed daily menu which is what we had. Today, a Monday, for $6.50 we had: crispy tortillas with small container of pickled vegetables, grilled cauliflower, (first course, leek & potato broth soup, (2nd course), then either stuffed cabbage or chicken kabobs, (main course) with baked apples with cinnamon and cream for dessert. Included drink of the day was pineapple juice. Our bill came with two heart lollipops! We then ordered two coffees extra.Total bill was 352 Pesos ($17.60).We are definitely coming back!!!

Yelp
Not bad but also not great. Service is slow and the food is good, but it took 30 min to get drinks and then get the food. Lots of tourists..

Ramon B.

Yelp
Formerly a really good restaurant. We got stuck in the mezzanine which is a concrete box with the definition of bad acoustics.10 minutes on appeared a saxophone, electric bass and drum trio which destroyed any chance for conversation in our party. The "manager" a smarmy used car/time share salesman type came over to a young woman and monopolized her for his own flirting gratification without even glancing at the rest of our party. Steak was undercooked so we requested a little more cooking. It disappeared for 15 minutes and came back just as rare as before but now completely cold. Please know that I've been going to Olla for many years and it had been going downhill. I ate a so-so dinner there a week ago which I chalked up to my poor dish selection. Now I think the place is over the hill. I've been to Oaxaca 15-20 times and Olla was a mandatory stop. No more. It's off my list which is sad because I love the terrace. Beware the middle level though. It's a charmless concrete box and I would avoid it at all costs.
google avatar

Betsy H.

Yelp
The 3 tomalitos were fantastic. Not wild about the Tlayuda - the tortilla was touch. The tortilla soup ordered by a friend was amazing. And a great flan and sorbet.
google avatar

Bari P.

Yelp
Had lunch downstairs and loved it. Oaxacan teammate and a meat and cheese plate. Server's were nice and attentive. Dinner was not as good. Ate upstairs and it wasn't as comfortable, the relleno was on, not great, and the service was marginal. Still, great location, good menu and eat downstairs!

Veronica M.

Yelp
It was great food but the service was rather slow. We went on Christmas Day so that could be the reason for the slow service; they were very busy. Quesadilla de flor de calabaza, buñuelos, chilaquiles, and café de olla were delicious.

Michael L.

Yelp
Loved this place. They make a great hot choclate.
google avatar

Robert C.

Yelp
Nice table mescal, fast and friend service, with a neighborhood feel. Big screen TV and regular crowd takes the tourist edge off. They made a worthwhile and tasty tlayudas vegetariano.
google avatar

Patricia L.

Yelp
This restaurant used to be my favorite. What happened? Today's breakfast was a diaster. I ordered chiliquiles rojo with chicken. Instead i received chiliquiles verde without chicken. I tried to go with the flow because they were drastically understaffed. So i asked for a fried egg to top my chiliquiles. It never arrived. When the bill came, I was charged for the chicken and the egg. Go figure. To top it off, they seemed put out that i did not want to pay for food that was never served.

Kirsten K.

Yelp
Having read reviews and received feedback from fellow travelers that they enjoyed their meal, we were excited to go to La Olla. Unfortunately, we wouldn't recommend this restaurant. There wasn't a local in sight which should have been a clue. We ordered two of their house specials and the food was extremely bland. Lacked flavor - no salt, not even a hint of heat and the coconut crusted shrimp were dry. Tailored for a tourists palete, very disappointed.

Nika E.

Yelp
Wonderful food, service and ambiance. I highly recommend this place. We went for lunch with our 2 kids, and everyone had a good thing me. They even made my picky son a quesadilla.

Matt C.

Yelp
This was our favorite restaurant in Oaxaca; it easily beat out a couple of similarly-priced places that are higher rated on Yelp. The highlights of our meal were the crema de flor de calabaza--possibly the best soup I ever tasted--and the mole negro de fandango--definitely the best mole I've ever had. The service was also friendly and attentive. Next time in Oaxaca we'll go here first!
