La Patagonia - Review - Camden - London - The Infatuation

"La Patagonia is a friendly Argentinian grill restaurant on Camden High Street that’s a good spot to know about when you find yourself in the area around Camden Town tube station and want to get clear of the weed clouds as soon as possible. You’re probably going to want to get involved in one of their steaks, and whether you go for the top of the range lomo or a rump and chips for under £20, you’re not going to have much room for anything else. Of course, you shouldn’t let that stop you from ordering some of their excellent empanadas, a side order of humita (a comforting corn, cheese, and béchamel side) and several glasses of malbec. photo credit: Giulia Verdinelli" - Oliver Feldman

It’s a good spot to know about when you find yourself hungry after accidentally walking the whole of Regent’s Park and ending up in Camden Town. You’re probably going to want to get involved in one of the steaks, and whether you go for the top of the range lomo or a rump and chips for under £25, you’re not going to have much room for anything else. The Best London Pasta Dishes That Aren’t From Italy | Eater London

"Many of the best Argentinian restaurants in London focus almost exclusively on the parilla, pumping out eye-bulging piles of steaks, ribs, pork shoulder, morcilla and chorizo sausages from the ubiquitous charcoal grill. It’s not unusual if the closest thing to salad in sight is an empanada. While La Patagonia in Camden lives up to those expectations, it also highlights other elements of Argentinian culture. There’s the football fever — the façade is painted with the blue and white stripes of the national team’s kit — and then there’s the pasta, a reflection of the fact that around half of the present-day Argentine population has Italian roots. Sorrentinos are large filled domes of pasta, more regal than ravioli, which are thought to have originated in the coastal city of Mar del Plata south of Buenos Aires. At La Patagonia, they’re filled with mozzarella, ricotta, and bechamel; there’s also spinach and ricotta ravioli and beef canelones. All the pasta is made at the restaurant and served with a choice of sauces, both for takeaway and dining in in normal times." - Hester van Hensbergen

This is such a hidden gem in Camden. The restaurant is very intimate which makes it perfect for date night. We had a party of 6 and all of our food came out just the way we ordered. All the Steak was cooked to perfection. The waiter was extremely attentive. Highly recommend.

Went here on a Saturday. My friend chose the place and I generally like Argentinian. First, service was exemplary. Especially with my friend’s daughter. Lovely chap. Onto the food. Chicken Empanadas - not bad. OK portion size. Ribeye steak - not bad. Reasonably well cooked. Flavour a bit lacking. Lomo - the fillet steak that just tasted average. The peppercorn sauce was decent. Fries - good, can’t mess these up really. Creamed spinach - bland. Didn’t really enjoy it. Need more flavour, herbs. Overall it was…not bad. That is to say, not good either. Rather pricey given the quality. Would I return? No.

Google
What a great place to eat, we were a party of 4 and one of out party was from Argentina so I wanted an authentic experience which we got! The owner has their own range of Malbec which goes superbly with the various cuts of meat cooked to perfection! If you love steak, you definitely have to visit this place!

Google
It was a random find in the "taste for all" Camden town. The venue did not disappoint. Atmosphere was chill, argentinian themed. Staff was corteous, present but not overwhelming, accomodating, smiling and giving advice as requested. Food was tasty, arrived hot and on time. Tasty, everyone enjoyed their choices. Excellent place worth repeating.

Google
Excellent quality restaurant with good service and even better dishes. Popular on a Friday evening with people walking in trying to get a table so booking is recommended. The table service is enthusiastic without being overbearing, it's easy to get attention for another round of drinks. It's a mainly meat menu (that shouldn't come as a surprise) with my dish being well cooked (medium rare), well presented, and tender to cut and eat. There are home made pasta options as well if meat is not your thing. There is also a good selection of Argentinian wines and beer to compliment the dishes. So whole heartily recommended.

Argentina chorizo is good, but lomitos al champignon is amazing. The meat is so juicy and tender, also champignon sauce is really good.

Google
I am struggling to find words to say how excellent La Patagonia is. We went with friends at lunchtime hoping for a real taste of the Argentine and were not disappointed. The first impression on entering is of a fairly low-key style but don't be deceived - the service and the food are outstanding. I have had a few "best steaks in my life" but this one has definitely pushed any of the others off the top slot! Truly great food, excellent wine and friendly but not intrusive service. A great experience.

Google
Great food and ambience and on top excellent customer service. We walked into this place without much thought taking a rsik. But glad we did. Had a really good time eating out steaks. Food prices aren't extortionately high and steak quality is par with top London steak places. The only downside is a parking, but for majority it should not be a problem because of great public transport links.

Yelp
Very solid, homey Argentine restaurant. Relaxed vibe and delicious food. I had the pollo and red wine. It was a great way to spend a rainy weekday evening. I almost gave a 5, but two things kept me from it. The menu said my meal came with salad, but it came without one. Also - there was a yelp checkin discount, but the server would not accept it. Besides those two things, I had a great experience and would recommend.

Yelp
The only Argentinian place I've been to in the UK, La Patagonia was delicious! The empanadas were top-notch and the cheese appetizer was tasty.

Yelp
Love love love this place. Joined a few friends for dinner, and could instantly tell upon arriving that this was a winner. Very little to dislike about La Patagonia. Service and staff were excellent (something that isn't easy to find in the UK..), and the food was wonderful. I underestimated the portion size and thus overate, but left feeling completely satisfied. Can't wait to go back and try some more options! Looking forward to my return already.

Yelp
We decided to try out a new place and this was spot on! The service was great, the place is cozy and the food was delicious! The meats were juicy and the appetisers absolutely perfect. Definitely a place to come back to.

Yelp
Ah-MAZING!! A must try if you love grilled meat and Argentinian food. Like, I'm racking my brain right now and cannot think of a single fault. I ordered the meat share platter for me and my partner (which I'm almost certain could feed 4-5 people) along with grilled vegetables, parsley and garlic fries and a bottle of wine. And yes, we ate it ALL. Then I also managed to fit in dessert. The meat was grilled medium rare as we had requested, the provolone is also a must add (ignore 'optional'). Fries were perfectly cooked. Actually I've got my only complaint: more chimmichurri!!! You can tell a lot of love is put into the food cooked here. Our server was super helpful and knowledgeable about the wines, helping us to choose a Malbec that paired perfectly with our food. And even though I was stuffed and ready to roll out of the restaurant, there's no way I was leaving without dessert. The crème caramel was a delight- perfectly balanced between creamy, sweet and bitter, it was the perfect way to finish dinner. A must have if you're in the Camden area, and if you're not, well worth the journey. It has a very rustic and homely feel that I loved. Highly reccomended!

Yelp
Where do you go to reminisce with travelling friends about drinking a lot of Malbec in Mendoza, Argentina? Well we had eaten a lot of steak as well as drinking all the wine available, so it seemed fitting to have our London catch up based in an Argentine steak restaurant. La Patagonia is a rustic Argentine restaurant on Camden High Street, so super local to me and easy to get to. La Patagonia specialise in steak, empanadas and mixed grills, and of course they have a wide selection of Malbec! I've always found their house wine brilliant value at £15 a bottle and it goes perfectly with the steak. We quickly demolished empanadas whilst waiting for people to arrive and then tucked into the steaks and sides. We also managed to polish off a rather restrained 3 bottles of Malbec between the 5 of us (sounds like a lot written down, but we were on a much higher level drinking in Mendoza #toomuchfun!) The steaks are fabulous - proper Argentine meat, marbled and tasty because of this, they are definitely the star of the show here. We got fries and some veggies on the side, but you don't need much else! I've had the mixed grill to share before - they literally place the grill on the table, so not great in hot weather, but again very tasty if you like to mix your meat up and have a bit of everything. I even believe that we managed to try the desserts one time - but not today, too full of wine and steak, just how you should be!

Yelp
Tasty lunch and a great value. Large portions. My starter was the chorizo. Juicy and delicious! My server indicated that it's made in the restaurant. I ordered the Churrasco Rump steak (200g) with mash potatoes and salad as a meal. The steak was slightly over done and a bit bland but still tender. The chimichurri sauce from the chorizo was amazing and really lent the steak some real flavor. The mashed potatoes were fluffy, creamy, and well seasoned. The salad was fresh and well dressed. As you can see from my picture, I ate it and then remembered I needed to take a picture.

Yelp
This is a MUST visit place. It steals the number one place on my London list. Atmosphere is friendly and feels like you're traveling, wine (pink grignio) is lovely, the beef is absolutely amazing
google avatar

Marci A.

Yelp
Huge portions but I wasn't impressed with the quality of the food. The fries were over cooked, the chicken was undercooked and the salad had no dressing. The only thing I enjoyed was that the service was fast, the beer was cold and a nice conversation in Spanish with the waitress was very much needed as I was very homesick.

Yelp
Ok, I am not sure what to make of this place, every time I pass by it is always packed, the atmosphere feels relaxed, as on certain days they have live music. But really quite disappointing for an authentic Argentinian restaurant, the steak is really not all that good or tasty. We ordered the mixed meat on the grill, and the meats are overcooked and chewy, and for the price you can get much better elsewhere. Looks like they used cheap cuts of meat. We ordered some sides of roasted vegetables, chips and green salad, which were quite tiny portions. Service is very laid back, that it was a bit too slow. My partner really liked it, so we had to go back again on another occasion but it was no better the second time. The lunch looks better value and perhaps I could try something else on the menu which I noticed other diners seems to be enjoying much more.

Yelp
Yeah, I wanted to come here for ages, but didn't make the time until a supplier decided to take me and a couple people from the team to lunch. I'm a big fan of other people buying me lunch, and I have to say, that was the best thing about this particular experience. The service was slow and indifferent, the meat was both overcooked for me, seriously undercooked for one of my fellow diners (and we hadn't ordered the same thing, so it wasn't a simple mix up) and generally a bit tough and not terribly tasty. And this is a steak place! Now, my steak standards are admittedly high, and this is better than your average pub steak - thicker if nothing else. But for these prices, there are better options to be had. Buen Ayre on Broadway Market, or splash out for the Hawksmoor - doing a quick menu check, gram for gram the steak is actually cheaper (taking the sirloin as an example, I'm not going to cost the whole menu)!

Yelp
We landed up here seeing the great reviews on Yelp. I am not a big fan of giant portions of meat but my husband is. He ordered the steak and I ordered a chicken schnitzel. Both the dishes were beyond delicious and the portions were huge. We promised each other we could pack half of what was on our plate but scarily enough we ate it all up! On the day you go to La Patagonia make sure you skip a meal. A special mention for the lady who was waiting on our table. She gave us fabulous suggestions that helped us choose exactly the dish we would like.
google avatar

Thomas S.

Yelp
Good service, good starters, the worst quality steak I have had in London. The 'tender' sirloin was tough and riddled with fat and it came covered in salt.

Yelp
This place is FANTASTIC. I spent two months in Argentina in 2013, and since then I have been looking for a genuine Argentinian restaurant that could match the real deal. THIS is the place. I came here for a friend's birthday and had an empanada to start, with a rump steak and garlic chips to follow. The empanada was larger than usual, so you only needed one or two to start as they were filling and delicious. But the steak was the real star of the show. Not only was it top-quality meat, but it was cooked to perfection! The garlic chips were so moreish I polished off other people's. Most importantly, they had the best chimichurri out of Argentina. Washed down with a Quilmes, It took me right back to Buenos Aires, so it's was exactly what I was looking for! The only thing I would say is that it is pricey. But for the nostalgia and quality, pricey goes to priceless very quickly! Can't wait for my next visit! :D

Yelp
I was full to the brim when I left La Patagonia... and it was incredible. For appetizers we shared a couple empanadas, the veal sweetbread, chorizo, and for my main I had a grilled Argentine ribeye steak. Yum! The steak was fantastic, but the sweetbread stole the show for me. I just couldn't stop eating it. One of my friends had the ribeye cooked in a clay pot (which also looked amazing) and the other had some grilled fish. We finished our meal off with some flan despite the fact that our stomachs were already full. Luckily we all brought our dessert stomachs along! I can't wait to go back and try some more rustic Argentine food!

Yelp
Amazing value and - whisper it - steaks as good as if not better than Gaucho. There, I said it. Staff are friendly, you never feel rushed and prices are surprisingly affordable. A real find - get here before the secret gets out.

Yelp
Extraordinary We enjoy it.the grill of meat was unbelievable we couldn't eat all it . wine selection of course melbec was amazing

Yelp
My boyfriend a friend and I stumbled across La Patagonia when leaving the Camden Market during our holiday to London and we all agreed it was the best meal we ate while in London! From the wine to the beer to the main course to the dessert, everything was delicious. I had the sea bass which was cooked to perfection and full of flavors while the guys went for 2 different selections of the beef milanese (I don't eat beef but they agreed it was fantastic and ate every bite) for dessert we went with the tiramisu for dessert and were not disappointed in the least! The guys tried some Argentinian beers while I stuck with the Malbec (yum!). Service was perfect and all in all we will definitely be back the next time we are in Camden.

Yelp
I came here a while ago with a friend of mine. It was a spur-of-the-moment decision, and although they were fully-booked they pulled up a table for us so that we could eat. The steak was delicious; perfectly cooked and seasoned. I'm not a huge meat-eater, but I would risk a coronary at 35 to eat steak like that every day. The meal was great value, too. The waiter was from Uruguay, so I decided to practice my Spanglish on him. He was great fun and really friendly - he made recommendations as to the meat and what wine would suit it, and was really attentive.

Yelp
OMG. This place is amazing. I walked by the restaurant a while ago and instantly recognized the Argentina connection, but it wasn't until I was looking for a good Camden restaurant that I thought to try it out. I traveled to Argentina about 2 years ago and I know that you can always depend on them for some good meat and red wine. In London, the scene seems to be dominated by the upscale Gaucho, but it is so refreshing that La Patagonia is much closer to the small family owned restaurant scene that I experienced when in Buenos Aires. I came with a friend and we booked the day before for a Saturday evening, which in London is quite difficult to do. The place only seats about 30 people so it would be difficult to come with a group larger than 6. For starters, we ordered beef and chicken empanadas that were ok but not a must order. They did come on a cute empanada shaped wooden serving plate though. And for mains, we got the Parrillada Pampa to share, which should really be the only thing on the menu because it is absolutely fantastic. We didn't want black pudding so the restaurant offered to substitute a Spanish chorizo for it, and thus we had a nice fillet steak, two pieces of ribs (that are like a Korean style type cut), two pork chops, and both a Spanish and an Argentine chorizo. All were fantastic but I must say that the fillet and the ribs were my favorite. It all comes served on a sizzling platter in front of you that keeps it warm, and you come out smelling like BBQ. I really can't say a single bad thing about the place. We shared a bottle of Malbec that totally hit the spot. Some fellow diners had individual steaks that came served with some vegetables, but I don't think it could even hold a candle to our platter. I do wish the platter included a lomo fillet, but what they describe as a "beef skirt" was more than a hearty serving of steak so we were not left wanting. The prices are quite reasonable for what you get... and the experience was amazing so I will definitely be back soon.
google avatar

Marc T.

Yelp
Awesome. If in Camden you must come. Meat selection is fantastic. Owners pay attention to the details. If you like steak, come here!
google avatar

Robin W.

Yelp
Love this place! Come here very often during my lunch break with colleagues and never once been let down. Great lunch special where you can get a steak sandwich and a drink, well worth the price and not just your average steak sandwich. The steak itself is huge and delicious, and comes on a tasty baguette with a mound of salad and great chips. Fried egg on top as well which just adds to the greatness. Service has always been good, and the selection of sauces available to smear on the steak are great too. Thinking about it is making me want to go back, I may have to on my lunch break tomorrow!

Yelp
Great spot for good, hearty Argentina fare. Very very busy on a Saturday night, with a cosy, friendly vibe (except when people entered and exited - sitting next to the door in the January chill proved trying but we soon fixed that with lashings of Malbec!). Lovely selection of starters - I adored the empanadas, and my companions raved about the melted provolone option. Mains were tasty, but steaks were a tad over cooked - medium-rare became medium, medium well-done etc. Nice wine list, friendly staff.

Yelp
Güzel bir Arjantin restoranı. Yemekler hiç fena değil. Fiyatlar ortalama ve üzeri. Servis biraz yavaş ancak bunu bilerek gidince sorun olacağını zannetmiyorum. Bu civardaysanız ve değişik lezzet arıyorsanız denenebilir.

Yelp
Very nice food. Service could be better. Recommended place to come. The interior is very nice.

Yelp
This is one of the best lunch and dinner spots in the neighbourhood. The food is terrific, and the empenadas most especially. The steak is also excellent, and served with some delicious sauces. Patagonia has a lovely lunch special (£7.50pp), which is, hands down, the best value in on the street (along with the newly-opened Hawker). What makes the place special though, is the people, who are unfailingly friendly and enthusiastic. No matter how crowded it gets (and it often does get rather rammed), they are always willing to answer questions and make recommendations. Especially for Spanish-speakers, this is a real oasis of South American hospitality. Buen provecho!

Kenny W. C.

Yelp
Great little restaurant, great service, and excellent food. The steak is tender and the charcoal grill preparation is good.

Steven C.

Yelp
Came here for the first time. Ordered the mixed grill with provolone and a side of fries. The lady was willing to substitute chutney for the blood sausage (I am not a blood sausage person). I must say, the reviews on this place are right. Amazing flavors in each of the meats (and they all have slightly different seasonings so a nice variety of them).
google avatar

Heather D.

Yelp
This is a lovely restaurant for a nice lunchtime work meal with colleagues (for something a bit different) or a nice time with friends at dinner. The fact that there are quite a lot of locals and natives will show you this has some pretty authentic food with great service.

Michal G.

Yelp
Over cooked stake flavorless roasted vegetables and the onion and tomato salad was pretty mediocre as well . Very disappointing meal .

Yelp
Oh yeah baby, My arteries not sufficently clogged and my cholesterol too low, it was a good friend's birthday and someone suggested La Patagonia as a place to continue our mission of sampling every steakhouse in London. La Patagonia has a more rustic menu and feel and subsequently, the cuts and the starters/sides are different to what you may find in the more americanised places in London. Set in Camden, LP is small restaurant but with bags of character. The lady serving us was knowledgeable and fun, bantering with us, a group of four slightly tipsy loud guys on a Tuesday night out. She even took the piss a bit saying she didnt think we would be able to finish everything we had ordered. Machoness in full swing, we took that challenge. My memory is a tad hazy, but I recall having the Vacio which is a 300g flank; something new for me, served with chips, and we also got a Parrillada Pampa which is a mixed grill for 2 ppl. Must say, it was a juicy murderous party in my mouth for the rest of the evening. Having not had flank before, I was unsure what to expect but pleasantly surprised (this is making me so hungry right now) with the parillada pampa finishing me off nicely. My boys and I were on local beers all night, not too gaseous with the right amount of fizz. Mmm. I really enjoyed this different menu, and the feel of experiencing something a little more authentic. I shall be going back as soon as I can!
google avatar

Adele D.

Yelp
We took our friends here based on a recommendation and we were not dissapointed. Great steaks and great service all for a reasonable price (compared with Gaucho, Good man etc). Small family run I think but was authentic argentinian so food was cooked and prepared as if Argentina. Not the best location and most likely wouldn't have tried it/found it if it wasnt recommended!

uzi h.

Yelp
Yeah.. it's kind of okay. I had the rib-eye and my friend got the sirloin. They were both okay, mine was over done for what was supposed to be med-rare. Their aioli was pretty good which came with the fries and sweet potatoes. Service was very friendly, if not super attentive. I'd give it 3.5 stars.

Heather J.

Yelp
Booked a table after reading the reviews, only to be called up 3 days before the event to be told they dont have space. Ridiculous and with no apology!
google avatar

Carolina M.

Yelp
Amazing empanadas and really good quality stakes. Totally recommended

Gokhan I.

Yelp
My favorite local restaurant. Great selection and fast service. My favorite is the sirloin but lamb shank is very delicious as well!

H D.

Yelp
Best steak sandwich I have ever had. Awesome chimichurri sauce. Oh, chips are fresh and out of this world. Great value too. Hermes the waiter is pleasant and a great fit for the restaurant.

Sayaka S.

Yelp
Came in here with some friends after a drizzly walk through Camden market. I got the milanesa pollo madryna - so good! The sweet corn cream sauce was delicious as weird as it sounds. The one critical comment I would make is the service. When we walked in with no reservation they said it was fine but we needed to leave within 1.5 hours for a group that did make a reservation. We were perfectly fine with that but it took about 10 minutes for them to take our order and when we were finished eating we had to request them to provide us the check. Otherwise, nice little cozy place with very flavorful food!
