OMG. This place is amazing. I walked by the restaurant a while ago and instantly recognized the Argentina connection, but it wasn't until I was looking for a good Camden restaurant that I thought to try it out. I traveled to Argentina about 2 years ago and I know that you can always depend on them for some good meat and red wine. In London, the scene seems to be dominated by the upscale Gaucho, but it is so refreshing that La Patagonia is much closer to the small family owned restaurant scene that I experienced when in Buenos Aires. I came with a friend and we booked the day before for a Saturday evening, which in London is quite difficult to do. The place only seats about 30 people so it would be difficult to come with a group larger than 6.
For starters, we ordered beef and chicken empanadas that were ok but not a must order. They did come on a cute empanada shaped wooden serving plate though. And for mains, we got the Parrillada Pampa to share, which should really be the only thing on the menu because it is absolutely fantastic. We didn't want black pudding so the restaurant offered to substitute a Spanish chorizo for it, and thus we had a nice fillet steak, two pieces of ribs (that are like a Korean style type cut), two pork chops, and both a Spanish and an Argentine chorizo. All were fantastic but I must say that the fillet and the ribs were my favorite. It all comes served on a sizzling platter in front of you that keeps it warm, and you come out smelling like BBQ.
I really can't say a single bad thing about the place. We shared a bottle of Malbec that totally hit the spot. Some fellow diners had individual steaks that came served with some vegetables, but I don't think it could even hold a candle to our platter. I do wish the platter included a lomo fillet, but what they describe as a "beef skirt" was more than a hearty serving of steak so we were not left wanting. The prices are quite reasonable for what you get... and the experience was amazing so I will definitely be back soon.
