"Some time ago, La Torta Gorda was on the Food Network. You will be reminded of this when you visit. If the Food Network ever comes back to town, La Torta Gorda should be featured once again. The bread is soft, the meat is tender, and each of the sauces and salsas is flavorful and complex. These tortas deserve to be compared to any other great sandwich in the city." - Matt Tillquist
"The tortas at this Mexican restaurant in the Mission live up to La Torta Gorda’s oversized moniker. Sandwiches here come in two sizes (junior or regular) and both are monstrous. Don’t believe us? Kindly refer to the Mega Cubana, a behemoth featuring milanesa, sausage, pierna, ham, chorizo, eggs, turkey, queso fresco, and American cheese that’s large enough to feed five or six people. Share it with friends at a table inside the diner-inspired spot, or under an umbrella out in the back garden." - julia chen 1, lani conway, ricky rodriguez, patrick wong

"The pierna enchilada torta made with pulled pork is the perennial favorite at this bright, family-run Mexican sandwich spot in the deep Mission. It comes with a mound of pulled pork topped with plenty of beans, avocado, and jalapenos and stuffed inside a crisp-soft torta roll. But all the sandwiches are good here — and huge, so no need to order the large unless you’ve got an especially hefty appetite or a hellish hangover." - Lauren Saria
"Torta Gorda is a heavy hitter. The tortas are indeed fat, especially the ridiculous Mega Cubana, and they are also delicious. It’s a simple space, with some counter seats inside and some picnic tables out back. We usually go with the rajas con queso or the carne asada. Get napkins. A lot of them." - taylor abrams, jess basser sanders, will kamensky
