Best Mexican Restaurants in NYC, According to Eater Editors | Eater NY

"La Villa is a colorful honky-tonk in the Bronx’s Kingsbridge neighborhood working as a family refectory by day and a fully licensed bar by evening. The latter specializes in sangria, mojitos, and margaritas — only served on the rocks, the menu cautions there are no frozen margaritas here. Drinking snacks during happy hour run include nachos, Buffalo wings, and queso fundido, but the full-meal menu runs to molcajetes, combination platters of meat and seafood, and hand-patted sopes, best washed down with fresh-fruit batidos. There’s live music on Fridays and Sundays." - Nadia Chaudhury

We been meaning to come here for a long time, knowing people who've come from another restaurant- and WOW! I'm so glad we did!! My drink was amazing!!! We had guacamole with chips, Jalapeño poppers to start and our entrees were, Salmon a Chipotle & Pollo ala Mexicana. Our food came fast, hot, and tasted perfect! Oh and we didn't know that Fridays are karaoke night!' Soo the music was great with very talented performers! Our waitress Syndy Maine was friendly, thoughtful and professional, which makes us really want to come back again and again! And btw we've tried many Mexican restaurants and know great Mexican food- so if I say come here, it's because I highly recommend!!

Was in the area visiting and stopped by on a Friday early afternoon for lunch. We were greeted warmly and sat down immediately. The young lady tending to us was very nice. We all enjoyed our meals: order of al pastor tacos, chicken quesadilla, and steak burrito. They also give complimentary tortilla chips with salsa. The salsa is good - a little on the sweeter side but so good. If ever in the area again, I will definitely come again!

The prices, the food, the service, all great. I will say, the drinks were more sweet, than strong, but other than that 👌🏾. We ordered queso with jalapeños, which actually comes as a fondue with tortillas. It was soooo good. We ordered a three meat place that came with rice and beans, a steak burrito, al pastor taco, and quesadilla between the four of us. Everyone enjoyed their meals. They were big enough and tasted good.

I was there on Monday, and at the entrance to the bar, there was a group of very loud drunks with the music so loud it was impossible to hear my friends' conversations. It was a very unpleasant experience and disrespectful to all the customers when it's supposed to be a family atmosphere. I really hope the managers of this establishment do something about it and prioritize their customers, not just their friends.

Came for lunch on a Saturday and had a delightful time! Such a cheerful interior, and very clean too. Our waitress was so sweet, and we ordered nachos and birria tacos - the birria and consomme were spot on and absolutely delicious. We can’t wait to be back!

Nice looking restaurant quick service. First mexican restaurant Ive been in that doesn’t do free chips and salsa. Edit I did ask for some and they said there was a cost for chips and salsa

I ordered from this place because of its great reviews, i got a steak quesadilla no onions or guacamole and sour cream with a lemonade, and it comes with rice and beans. When the food got here my drink and sour cream were missing. I tasted the rice and beans, and they were over cooked. The quesadilla was good , when I had called back to tell them what they forgot they said they would send it back when they did there was something weird in my drink I don’t know what it was, but I’m disgusted. When I called to tell the lady the issue she didn’t offer no type of refund. I understand we’re human and sometimes mistakes happen , but I did not enjoy ordering from this place.

Yelp
OK, first of all gross. Secondly, not a nice place to bring a date or anyone you want to impress. I'm from the South Bronx, so shady doesn't scare me, but I don't want to have to be at the ready while I''m eating. Last, the service is horrible. They're too busy entertaining themselves to pay attention to your orders. Garbage spot. Don't go

Yelp
Came in to this restaurant today. Had a shrimp taco. It was ok. Very messy presentation never saw. Pickles on a taco before but ok maybey they ran out of jalapeño services was great. One thing I noticed was the kitchen cook you can see him from the dinner area. At no time wasn't wearing gloves he was touching everything with his hand or at any time I saw him wash his hands. This was just very disappointing well I leave you guys a pic of my out of this world taco with pickles lol

Yelp
I recently visited La Villa after a very long time. Good ambiance with music. The margarita was a tasteless slushy-did not taste like Tamarindo nor alcohol at all (major fail) --___-- I remember the drinks being good (before). The guac was ok but lacked salt and lemon --__-- The food wasn't bad (tacos, enchiladas verdes, flats and nachos) The waitress and bartender were nice however, the waitress service was very slow. Overall over priced "ok food" and It seems after this 're-vamp' or new ownership they've got a lot of work to do. The area definitely has better options for authentic Mexican food.

Yelp
I was a excited about this place opening up not so much after trying it. It is an average place nothing to run out the door about. Service isn't that great, they kind of forget about you and never check in. Chilaquiles are average, not spicy which I understand not everyone likes their food too spicy, but you should expect chilaquiles to have some kick to it. Bistec encebollado is ok al thought we did ask for the onions to be super cool well done and it either wasn't communicated or not executed because they came back just regularly sautéed. We asked for extra chips and were told there would be an extra charge and the baskets were super light and nearly have empty when they were brought out both times. To be fair they ended up not charging us for them. I hope they improve their food and service in the future. We will definitely try this place again since they seem to have set up some outdoor seating!

Yelp
Went to La Villa for the first for a late lunch and I had the red sangria that was very good and chicken fajitas with rice and beans. I really enjoyed the food and my boyfriend had the avocado salad. The service was good and prices reasonable and very friendly. Will go back!

Yelp
When I got there I had to wait several minutes to be seated even though it was mostly empty, the menu was in all English (I have never seen this in all my life) for a Mexican restaurant that serves predominantly Hispanic people in the area. The menu options were decent but lacked some of the basics, I ordered two tacos that were decent at best and a mediocre strawberry shake. If only this was the full experience I might have given them a 3 star but after I asked for the check and was waiting I asked the manager/owner for a refill of salsa because so little came with the basket of chips, he then informed me that it would be an extra charge , for a sauce dish that was so comically small that I thought he was joking, and when my bill came I simply gave them my card because my order was so simple (2 tacos, 1 shake) and yet despite that I was charged for 3 tacos and a shake. When I was about to sign off I noticed the extra charge and informed the waitress, for a second she seemed a little confused as to what to do next so I said you know what just give me another (mediocre) strawberry shake for the road to make up for the extra charge. I was then informed that the owner/manager said that because the shake was an extra dollar that she could not give me the shake, over a dollar on a drink that costs them less than a dollar to make, when it was their "mistake". I than had to wait another 10 minutes of my time to wait for them to void the last check and charge me again.

Yelp
Beware! I ordered fajitas chicken/beef. The food was ok. However they give very little meet and a small plate with rice and beans. Was all onions. For $19 I expect more.
