The Best Restaurants on Newbury Street in Boston | Eater Boston

"La Voile (“The Sail”) is a worthy stop for lunch or dinner. Founded by Frenchman Pierre Honegger, La Voile is inspired by La Voile au Vent (“The Sail in the Wind”) in Cannes, where sailors like Honegger, and reportedly Ernest Hemingway, frequented. La Voile will transport you to France with its decadent food — escargots, onion soup, beef tenderloin, chocolate mousse — and bistro-style seating." - Anna Darrow

Came here for a lunch date during Dine Out Boston. My partner and I both ordered from the prix fixe menu — $36 for three courses. The price was unbeatable. For appetizers we tried the terrine and the cauliflower soup, for mains the monkfish and risotto, and for dessert the floating island and the chocolate mousse. The terrine was absolutely delicious and I could have had it on its own as a light lunch. The caramelized onions really added a lot to the dish. The soup and monkfish were okay, a bit bland for my taste but not bad. The risotto was similarly okay — good, but a bit plain. The goat cheese added a lot and made the whole dish. I would have that for a light lunch as well. As for desserts, the floating island was too sweet for me to have more than a single bite. The mousse was good, very thick and rich but the strawberries on top balanced it out well! The ambiance of this restaurant was beautiful. My partner and I sat inside on the high top tables, and the vibe of a French bistro was captured perfectly. The nautical themes added a lot, and the setting felt very cute and romantic. I don’t think I’d necessarily come here again, but I don’t regret trying it out and I might bring my parents here, or friends who like simpler, lighter foods.

Very disappointed, won’t be returning! This place is completely overrated. I was really looking forward to trying this French restaurant, but unfortunately, it turned out to be a big letdown. The first thing I noticed was the condition of the plates — they looked worn out with black scratches and didn’t appear clean, which set a poor tone right away. The appetizer was just okay, nothing memorable. Then came the main courses: the mussels were incredibly bland, lacking sweetness and any depth of flavor. Honestly, the worst I’ve ever had. We also tried the monkfish, which was equally disappointing, dull and flavorless. To make matters worse, the dessert (floating island) was overly sweet to the point that I couldn’t take a second bite. It left me feeling nauseous for quite a while afterward. Extremely disappointed overall. With so many better options out there, I definitely wouldn’t recommend this place, and I won’t be returning.

Google
If I could I would give this restaurant a score of 4.5, so don’t be turned away by the score. If you are looking for an authentic French cuisine experience, I think this is your bet and my dad who I ate with was blown away by the restaurant and will definitely eat there again. I ordered the escargot, the basil soup, and the duck. My dad ordered the tuna tar tar and the Sole. I’ll get the two bad things out of the way: I did not care for my soup, at all. But also I wasn’t expecting it to be chilled which may have been a product of my poor reading skills on the menu and the anticipation of a warm savory pesto soup and then confronted with a chilled grainy mush. I feel like I didn’t meet this dish where it was at and I do think I judged it unfairly and it wasn’t terrible by any stretch, I just didn’t care for it very much which was surprising as I love all the ingredients. What is probably the biggest black mark was the complimentary bread, which seems like such a pedantic thing to poke holes about but French cuisine is known for the quality of their bread and the bread was extremely basic, not a crisp baguette crust, no delicious window-pane gluten strands. I wouldn’t ordinarily care so much but I feel that bread is such a quintessential stable of Italian and French cuisine that to offer frankly subpar bread is a bit of a blemish. But on the good stuff. I quite enjoyed my escargot. Some of them were particularly meaty and juicy. I also greatly enjoyed the fact that it came with some slivers of other toasted bread (much better than the bread basket) that I could dip into the sauce once I’d eaten the mollusks. It was also very hot (temperature wise) which I enjoyed as a contrast to my cold soup. The duck was very good. Very well cooked and served with a particularly tasty sweet potato (I think? It was orange) spread which was by far the tastiest thing I had during the meal. I also had half of my father’s Sole dish which is apparently their signature dish and it was also quite good, extremely tender and delicate though essentially tasting of mostly butter, which frankly went for the escargot as well. So I struggle with reviewing this restaurant because I walked away thinking that a good deal of the food was quite well made and served and I actually think it’s pretty reasonably priced for a high end meal. But there were two things that I struggled with and one them is just a personal preference thing with me: 1) Portions I had soup, an appetizer and a main course, plus half of my father’s sole and once leaving I still felt hungry (I’m not really a dessert guy). And I’m not a big eater either. I usually walk away from restaurants with a to go bag, so that felt disappointing. 2) I mostly eat Asian, Indian, and Central American cuisine and I think I really missed the big bold flavors. French cooking is very subtle and uses richness and butter in lieu of spice and flavor (in my very pedestrian opinion). I don’t think I would eat here again, but that’s not really the fault of the restaurant. I think overall things were cooked and presented very nicely and both the service and ambience were lovely (very reminiscent of the close quarters of a genuine French restaurant). I think I just might have been so saturated with different types of cuisine that I found it challenging to truly enjoy what was being offered. If you’re looking for an authentic French dining experience I think this is your go to, but for me, I think I’m going to stick to spicier options.

The service was excellent. Our waiter was amazing, and the highlight of our night was the Dover sole.it was absolutely delicious. We ordered Dauphinoise potatoes and risotto as sides, and both were fantastic. For the starter, we had the tuna tartare, which I thought was good, though it lacked the flavor I was hoping for. The tomatoes, on the other hand, were very well-seasoned and delicious. Overall, we had an amazing time here.

A Newbury street institution. You always have a lovely experience at La Voile. The staff go above and beyond, and the food is always fantastic. In the summer their patio is set back from the sidewalk, protected from the public by greenery, so it feels very private. We had the escargots, the Dover sole, and the sea bass.

Google
Baguettes with crunch paired with escargot was a delicious appetizer. Duck was cooked perfectly, and accompanied with a bright carrot purée and beet sauce. I do think some table salt was needed to maximize flavor. Friendly service.

Google
Nice experience. The food was delicious, and the presentation was beautiful. The only thing that was not enjoyable was the “honey” served with the tea. I’m not sure what it was, but it was not honey. The staff were nice and on point. The atmosphere was cozy and really captured the essence of a classic French restaurant. It’s a great spot for a relaxing and enjoyable meal.

Yelp
How nice to find a French restaurant on Newbury St open for lunch. Extra excited to see the 3 course lunch menu. The service was legendary. I wanted to dine outside because it was a beautiful summer day and I could enjoy the flowers and greenery but after my first course the sun was too hot. "Can I switch to indoors?" "Of course madam" Ah, air conditioning, sparkling Rose, quietude and du pain. For my second course I chose P.E.l. mussels in Marinière sauce. The bowl was so full of mussels that I used one of the two extra bowl to pour in some of the flavorful sauce so I could dip each mussel. The portions of the first two courses were more than I could eat. My server asked how long until I could refrigerate the mussels, I said 60 minutes and he generously put the remainder in a takeout container and gave me another container of ice for the ride home. That is the legendary service.

Yelp
We came here as Krasi was booked and this place had a reservation available last minute. Unfortunately food was mediocre. I thought the Les pates was bland. And I had much better duck at deuxave. My husband had the veal and that was delicious. Our server was also the bartender. She was nice and attentive.

Yelp
I've been having days of not knowing what and where to eat. After some planning, I decided to go to La Voile for lunch. I had RSVP'd for 12:45 pm and I'm glad I did because the place was packed when I arrived. My tip is to always RSVP if the option is available. After perusing the menu, we ordered the pan-seared rib eye, the beef tenderloin and an onion soup. The onion soup was just mediocre. There was a large quantity of cheese and very little soup. Due the amount of cheese, it felt like eating chewing gum.The beef tenderloin was ordered to be cooked medium-rare and it came out medium and I felt it was close to being dry. However, the giant portobello mushroom was uberly tasty. The standout dish was the ribeye. I'd order that again in a heartbeat. I loved how it was cooked to medium rare and the red wine shallot onion sauce paired amazingly with the rib-eye and the frisée salad on the side was dressed in this delicious dressing I'm not sure what it was but it tasted similar to a honey mustard. The staff was nice, and because it was busy my waiter never came to check on us or bring us another bottle of water. I'm not mad at that and that won't stop me from coming back for another meal. The dover sole caught my eye today but I think I'll come back for the sea bass.

Yelp
My husband and I went there for our anniversary. This is a good place to have a dinner. You can sit outside or inside. We were seated inside. The food tasted great. As a starter we ordered a "Foie Gras" On the menu you can choose from two options they have or order both of them. We ordered both. Both "Foie Gras" tasted great. As my main dish, I ordered "La Volaille" roasted chicken and my husband ordered "L'Entrecote" ribeye. Our waiter told us that my chicken cooking time is 45 minutes, I was aware of that because it was written on the menu as well. I confirmed my order. The chicken was amazing, it was soft and yummy. I recommend trying it. For dessert we ordered "Le Brouillard" and they brought us a candle. It was so sweet. It was delicious.

Yelp
Having recently had dinner here I thought it time to update my lunch review from over 10 years ago. We had dinner with another couple and another friend so there were 5 of us in total. As we were going to an art opening later we had dinner early. Despite the early dinner hour, the place was full not long after we were seated. Reservations are a must. Our waitperson was lovely and greeted us with menus and water as soon as we were seated. One of our party with everyone's approval chose the wine for the table. I don't remember what it was but it was a delicious and crisp, dry white. We started with orders of escargot and spicy mussels in a traditional Marinière sauce...both delicious! For my main I ordered seared cod over quinoa which also had a pistou sauce (kind of a French version of pesto). It was quite delicious and beautifully plated. Two others ordered the whole sea bass which was deboned at the table...a lovely dish. Another person ordered the roasted duck with spring vegetables and sauce l'orange. My husband ordered the pan-seared ribeye with salad and frites. We all seemed to enjoy our food although later once we were home my husband confessed that he had not been happy with his dish. He found the ribeye was gristly and the frites came out cold. Not wanting to make a fuss as we were a group of 5, he didn't say anything to the waiter but he really should have! At the very least he should have asked for new frites that were freshly made and hot. Alas! For dessert three of us shared the French meringue floating in creme anglaise with almonds and caramel. The two others did not want dessert. The meringue was light, tasty and not too sweet. That said, I am not sure it was the dessert for me. A couple of tastes was plenty. My husband would have rated his food a two he told me. He had never been to this restaurant before and unfortunately he was not impressed. I have been here for lunch have been good experiences. This was my first time for dinner and it matched my expectations. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their food selections. The restaurant is small and for some it might feel a bit tight particularly those sitting at the tables for two. We had a fairly nice sized table in a corner and mostly out of the way although my husband who is a tall guy at 6'3" felt a bit cramped. He's a man who likes his elbow room and La Voile is tight on space. The interior design as I mentioned in my earlier review remains lovely and beautifully appointed. There are incredible black and white yacht and sailing photos on the wall from the 1970s. (Recall the La Voile means The Sail in French.) The zinc bar is a particular treasure. The service was attentive. Many of the staff do speak French although ours did not...one of our group is a French speaker and had started conversing in that language to no avail. I would return and probably will at some point for lunch as I am often in the area during the daytime. My husband has made it clear this wasn't the place for him other than the company we were with. Perhaps the restaurant should look into the sourcing of their ribeye steaks and work a little harder to ensure that frites are cooked to order and come hot piping hot. Overall in addition to his subpar meal, I think the place also felt a little too small and fussy for my husband. Prices are in keeping with the Newbury St. location and the times we are living in, which is to say thing are on the expensive side.

Yelp
I went to their Newbery Street location. Ambiance was very nice and so was the service. Food was excellent with traditional French dishes perfectly prepared.

Yelp
I took my niece for lunch. We had sandwiches and French fries and salad. The food was good. The crouque monsier was especially good. Service was good too. I wasn't sure how busy it was going to be on a Saturday afternoon so I made reservations but it wasn't super busy.

Anne O.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our food but the service was slow and inattentive. We had to ask a bus boy to find our server so we could request our bill, and when the server came, it was not our original waiter. He initially brought a bill with a bottle of wine added that we hadn't even ordered! To his credit he quickly readjusted the bill to the correct amount. Again, the food was outstanding but the service was subpar. UPDATED TO ADD: I spoke too soon...my credit card now shows two charges: the incorrect bill with the bottle of wine we didn't order, and the correct bill showing our actual order, with no corresponding credit for the over-$100 incorrect bill. I have called the restaurant repeatedly with no answer and sent an email asking for a credit; stay tuned...

Yelp
The food was very good as was the service and vibe. Ate outside on the patio, had the Saffron Mussels and the Whole Chicken, both were very good as was the wine. Great portions too and quick but not too quick to be served.

Yelp
French bistro . Everything was delicious. We had the foie, mussels and duck. The waiters are attentive and friendly.

Yelp
Christmas Eve at La Voile was amazing. From the service, to the food, to the ambience it was top notch. The Onion Soup was perfection with great flavor and the perfect amount of cheese. For the main course it was the Le Filet de Boeuf - Beef Tenderloin with a peppercorn sauce. The beef was not only flavorful but melted in your mouth. With dinner and a glass of wine, we passed on desert as we were full. And our waiter was amazing. Friendly, funny, and the perfect service

Yelp
Came here for a pre-Symphony Hall dinner with my (older) family. Great service - very friendly staff and they were right on top of things. The food was pretty good - I had the French onion soup and then the risotto. The soup was DELICIOUS - one of the best onion soups I've had and I've had a lot. The risotto was good but had a lot of veggies in it that were crunchy enough that it took away from how good the risotto was. For dessert, I got La Gourmande which was one teeny tiny chocolate mousse (amazing), one Madeleine (eh), and one tiny crème brûlée (superb). Overall everyone enjoyed their meal and we got to the show on time. Note: After watching the waitstaff debone the fish, I left wishing I had tried the Dover Sole. Those guys had some skills! Next time!

Pear B.

Yelp
Everything was perfect. From the greeting at the host stands (friendly all the way) to the service (they have whole fish to choose from and debone it for you) to the food (fish soup was the perfect temperature hot and deep flavors) to the atmosphere (nice buzz , very classic French and a cognac apple taste to finish our meal).

Yelp
My friends and I came here on a Saturday night, unfortunately feeling quite ill, but really wanted to try dinner so made it out anyway. We didn't get any drinks but did get the duck liver as it seemed to be the most popular dish on Yelp. We all loved the traditional version, couldn't get behind the pan seared version. If you don't love odd textures I would stick to the original. We got cucumber soup and french onion soup. The cucumber soup was okay, I mainly ordered it for the refreshing aspect to help with my stomach. If you are going to order a soup, go for the French onion soup. For entrees we got the duck which was pretty good, the mussels which does come with a lot of them, and the lobster and scallops which was an incredible dish. And a side of truffle mashed potatoes which were also very very good. By the time we finished these we were starting to feel better and didn't want to push our luck with dessert. Overall the food was great, the staff was nice, the place was decorated nicely and gave the vibe of an anniversary dinner which was nice. I'm excited to come back when I'm feeling better to be able to try more!

Lisa C.

Yelp
Our second visit here in a year was--again--5 star+. You can't beat the level of service, quality of food and presentation. We loved everything from the generous wine pours and cocktails to amazing foie gras appetizers to perfect preparations of beef, veal, and fish.
google avatar

Yelp
Service is expectational. Start dinner with La Charcuterie is addictive since they keep on giving fresh bread if you run out toast for charcuterie. My filet is perfection but the rib was great but not mesmerizing. The duck was the best for my husband last time we were there. Decor is charming and intimate. Thank you for wonderful time!

Yelp
This restaurant is fantastic. Lovely ambiance, delicious authentic French food food with generous portions, excellent service. Very highly recommend!

Yelp
I don't know a lot about French cuisine, but I was impressed with this place. Indoor and outdoor seating available on nice weather days. Great service. I visited during Dine In Boston, so worked off the set menu. I very much enjoyed the Chicken liver spread as an appetizer. I could have spread it on the fresh baguette they served at each table or the small toasted bread it came with. Both were great. I had the trout and rice and I was impressed how moist the filet was. I hate dry fish! The dinner came with desert so I ordered the Floating Island: a meringue that was quite tasty. Again, I leave it to the French food experts to comment, but if my in laws from Canada, or my friends from France come to visit, I'll take them here to check it out.

Yelp
We stopped in for an early (5:30 PM) dinner because we had to catch a flight and overall it's a place that I'd want to visit again. We had the beet salad, seared duck, and sole meunière which were all cooked perfectly. My duck was a tad bit gristly but I'm being nit picky. Topped everything off with their "La Brouillard" (an affogato) which was the perfect way to end the meal. They have an extensive wine list and full bar. The next time I come back it will definitely be a more relaxed visit and I'll want to explore the menu more. Besides the classic French Onion soup, I'd want to have the escargot and the foie gras. They also have a $69 prix fixe menu which would be a contender for next time. Oh Boston, so much food, so little time... The service was very good also. We were greeted and all interactions with staff were positive. Our waiter was cheery and checked in on us at the appropriate times and was always there when we needed him.

Yelp
We were blown away by everything in this restaurant. Our waitress was bubbling with enthusiasm, you could tell she just love to be there as did everybody in this restaurant everybody loved what they were doing and it was a pleasure for them to not only be there but to do what they were doing and to be able to serve people very best French food. The decor was delightfully cozy with a nautical theme. The only complaint I would have is that where I sat was right behind the major Z's station and when the air conditioning came on (or was it the wine cellar doors opened?) It blew cold air behind my back. We had the escargot and the smoked salmon both were absolutely divine, the bread baskets were filled before we even knew they were empty same with our water glasses. The sommelier came by to check on us and before he even left the table he noticed there was a ever so slight imbalance in the table reach down and fix the table himself. This left such a huge impression on us! No one in the restaurant was too big or too small for any task and they did it with such pleasure! It added all the more to our experience and our pleasure with it! I ordered the Dover sole which was absolutely fantastic. The man who brought it over showed it to me and said "may I debone it for you?" Of course I agreed and he did it so artfully and so skillfully he took out the spine of the fish in one piece! Sadly we did not get many pictures because we were so enjoying the experience The phones didn't come out. The Sommelier remarked on the court when we got the special bottle that they were wondering how it would hold up and it held up beautifully and the wine was absolutely lovely. At the end we were too stuffed for dessert and they brought us out Cognac as a dessert / pallet cleanser and we have to say we were extremely impressed! The food was absolute top level. The service was beyond exceptional, we had things refilled before we even knew they were getting close to empty. Everyone was courteous and obviously happy to be there. The bathrooms were even cute and well-appointed. Do yourself a favor and book a dinner here and you will not regret it!

Yelp
I love this place, but it's the second time that the fish was dry. Tonight it was the turbot.

Elaine K.

Yelp
By far, the best restaurant for French food. The French onion soup, the sole and steak were fabulous. Their prices are reasonable, they don't skimp on the food, and friendly/professional service. My partner and I split the soup and two of the mains, and they ever so kindly split them into 1/2 portions for us even without asking!

Robert S.

Yelp
I recently went to la Voile with some friends to celebrate a birthday. I hadn't been there for a while, and had forgotten what a really wonderful restaurant it is. First of all, the atmosphere is simultaneously relaxed and elegant, not something easy to bring off. Then there was the politeness of the management, which permitted them to tell me, someone who does not drink alcohol, that, yes, I may bring my own bottle of non-alcohol wine to dinner. Not only did they allow it, a request that in some restaurants elicits outright hostility, they greeted the request with utter graciousness and said nothing more about it. Everything I have ever eaten at la Voile has been excellent, some things even memorable. On this occasion, all I had was a smoked salmon plate with a thin lemon mayonnaise and pomegranate seeds, and a quiche. The quiche changes from day to day at the whim of the chef, and on this day it was ham and a very mild cheese. The outstanding dish one of my companions had was duck breast, served rare, with orange sauce and mixed vegetables. I must compliment the wait staff for perfecting the skill of being utterly unobtrusive. Cutlery and dishes appear as if by magic, in the same way wine glasses that were empty are suddenly full. I can think of no better place to have a fine meal in Boston.

Yelp
Oh my goodness! Indeed!!! La Voile is an amazement. I would fly from the West Coast to the East just for this restaurant! On my short trip to Boston, I ate there once for a late lunch, then came back the very next night for more. Fabulous. Just fabulous! We had beautiful drinks: Senor Napoleon and La Normandie plus a lovely Sancerre. The food was divine. Les Pâtés was a divine duo of chicken liver mousse and duck rillettes with a little salad. Le Saumon Fumé was a lovely smoked salmon with egg and caviar--the dressing for it was a thing of beauty! We loved the La Blanquette (is "the" redundant? Dunno...) Veal in a cream sauce with a little veg, mushrooms and rice. Beautiful. What really blew my mind was what they sparingly term "De Poisson." And sparing it is! A tiny ladle of broth. I stared blinkingly into my bowl. ("Oh well," I thought.) Ooooooooo, I was so wrong to be so biased by sight. The taste is the thing. It is a fish broth soup with a spare tomato base, and if you like fish, it is beyond belief in my thinking (or taste buds). I can't really describe it beyond that, but I am trying (unsuccessfully) to make it in my kitchen right now. The staff were just the BEST!!! Our team for our two encounters included the totally wonderful combo of Michel, Denis and Alek, and they were delightful and grand. So friendly. Smiles all the while and genuine. Helpful, informative, gracious, more. I cannot thank them enough for two such wonderful times. Love them.

Yelp
Place is unbelievable. Service is outstanding!!! Homard is best server !! Did good job !! Fish is outstanding!!! Complements to the kitchen.

Yelp
Salt. Get acquainted with it. The cucumber gazpacho literally had no salt. The escargots were severely under seasoned, as was the duck. I'll just chalk it up to a bad night.

Yelp
My sister and I had dinner reservations this evening. We usually go watch the Nutcracker every year since 2014 but we switched it up this year and decided to make it a tradition to hit every French cuisine we can in the city of Boston and we're so happy we made this our first choice! From the moment we entered to the very last moment we left everything was fabulous! Loved the dim lighting had a nice cozy feel. I highly recommend the pouched pear for dessert! Thank me later. Great experience Cheers

Yelp
Incredible service. The chicken, scallops, beef filet, along with the escargot, cheese plate, bread and all the desserts (raspberry sorbet in champagne! ) the dinner was an experience that I will repeat again

Yelp
Great French food in a cozy place. The service and food were great ! Great location

Connie L.

Yelp
The overall experience was ok. First off the service was fantastic! Our waiter was nice and attentive, always making sure we had plenty to drink and bread to enjoy. The food itself though, was good but not great. The mussels were cooked nicely in a savory & light mariniere sauce. But the Le Cassoulet didn't have much pork belly and was too salty. Main downside is the restaurant is so cramped that the waiter had to literally pull the table out just so I was able to access the cubby. There was very little room between tables. Would give them 5 stars for service since our waiter was so nice, but the food & atmosphere were alright.

Yelp
When my friends suggested French food I was a bit skeptical because I wasn't that sold when I went to France and had the food there. But let me tell you, I was pleasantly surprised. Everything we had in the table was delicious. My friends also enjoyed everything. The staff was friendly and responsive. It has a very intimate feel to it and that paired well with the food. Would definitely go back. And would recommend it. Check out all the pics for inspo.

Yelp
Amazing French classic ambiance with great service ! The escargot is incredible. I was slightly disappointed with the mussels because the broth was a little too light but if you like a very lean, light broth you will love it (I like my broth very garlicky and rich!)

Yelp
Ambiance: cute navigation sailboat theme. Very quaint and upscale Parking: all street/meter so plan ahead. It is newbury after all and famous for rare parking Service: above and beyond. They take your coat, hang it for you, and help you put it on. The waiter was attentive and I didn't have to wait long to get anything. Attire: jeans and nice top or business casual. Not a sweatpants or gym clothes kind of place but also not a full tuxedo ball gown kind of place. Food: went for the 3 course lunch ~45pp. Good options. Had the duck breast, salmon, pate, and mushroom soup. ALL perfectly made. Minus one star for dessert. I think the dessert was pre made and the neopolitan was not flaky and crunchy since usually this type of pastry is best freshly made. The chocolate mousse was delicious though! Yelp
I dropped by this place for lunch two months ago. It was a rainy day but I was still able to grab a seat in their covered outdoor patio. Their complementary French baguette was piping hot from the oven. It was crusty on the outside and soft inside. The butter was also very good. I got the sun dried tomato and spinach quiche as an appetizer which came with a large portion of mixed greens. The quiche was flaky and delicious! One of the best quiches I've had in a while. For main entree, I got the le filet de boeuf. It was a pan seared beef tenderloin with a truffle sauce accompanied by mixed greens and french fries. The tenderloin was very tasty but I thought the fries were a tad salty. Already full, I still had to try their desserts. I tried their Le Millefeuilles, which was a multi-layered puff pastry filled with vanilla cream accompanied by caramel sauce and berries. The pastry was a bit disappointing. I would expect it to be more flaky and moist. Service was great and friendly. Overall, it was a great meal and I definitely will be back for more French food.

Yelp
La Voile ... One of the worst experience of my life. Horrible smell at the entrance followed by an odor plume of filthy sweat. Food was a bad caricature of french cuisine. We got the menu a la carte and the main course, the canard confit, came out of an hospital canteen. The service was sloppy and filthy. Food fell on the floor when removing plates and nobody came to clean. Finally, when we asked for a digestif drink, waiters refused to serve us. Apparently the bartender was gone. It seems very hard to open a bottle these days... I sincerely recommend to avoid it.

Yelp
We went to Le Voile to celebrate our anniversary on a Saturday night. The restaurant was quite busy but the ambiance was just perfect for a date night. We ordered leek and potato soup and Les Moules (mussels in curry sauce) for our apps. For the main course we had braised lamb shoulder and roasted duck breast. The lamb was cooked to tenderness and the gratin that came with it was absolutely delicious. I was not a fan of the roasted duck, I wish the skin was made crispier than it was. Our server was attentive and the service was excellent.

Yelp
We had a tremendous dinner.i had duck breast cooked medium rare and it was perfectly prepared- sliced over dark lentils. My wife had roast chicken which was a large portion and she loved the remainder for lunch today (note it takes 45 minutes to cook so decide ahead and order upon seating). Our server, Mauro, was excellent. He was there anytime we wanted him and never Interrupted us when we were in obvious conversation with the couple who joined us. Great value and a very good time. We would happily return.

Yelp
Very authentic for what it is. Came here twice, in 2018 and 2022, and enjoyed the top-notch/authentic French cuisine on both occasions. A top dish worth highlighting was the seared La Sole Meuniere that blended extremely well with capers. I would rate the fish a must-have for everyone who enjoys fresh seafood that is seasoned extremely well. The escargot cooked in garlic and parsley butter was a top choice for a hot starter, would also recommend it. The ambiance and service were both excellent, did not decline a tad over the last 5 years, and would definitely be a must-try for anyone touring Boston. food 5/5 service 4.5/5 price 4/5 ambiance 4.5/5

Yelp
Just good onion soup watery and skimpy on the cheese ribeye meh fries good pate not bad service from a busboy (female) vindictive it seemed. French? Not for me I guess but this place and others like it in Boston Petit Robert for example would probably be scoffed at or at least laughed at by a French citizen. The deserts were good but the creme brulee was tiny. Good nice setting nice waiter with a thick french accent which was cool everyone wearing lacoste polos which was funny room temp water which was distressing on this horridly hot day. Mashed potatoes past pureed to watery everything needed a little salt. Gi back nah I'm good Le Voille au revoir.

Yelp
Waited exceedingly long for an entree and all that the manager said was for us to "be patient". It was a chicken dish that takes 45 mins to cook. Sure, but after almost an hour and 30 min after we finished having our apps, we got tired of waiting. They had an event happening in the private room and dishes kept flying out for the event. It was more so how arrogant and condescending the manager was that gave us a bad taste in our mouths.

Yelp
Got the $55 tasting menu: beet salad, duck breast, millefeuille Hard to go wrong with beet salad, duck breast flavors tasted great (don't ask for it medium well like I did though, go for the medium), millefeuille dessert was so pretty and tasted fine (haven't had before so not sure if it should be more crispy? But other than that was great) For $55 it's a lot of food and a pretty good deal! The service was also amazing -- our bread was refilled twice and we never ran out of water! The location on Newbury is very cute, the basement smells a little fishy like Boston basement restaurants often do but you stop noticing it very quickly

Yelp
I love French food and have been searching for the perfect French restaurant for special occasions. Came here for Valentine's Day and LOVED IT! Ordered the pan seared foie gras, roasted duck breast, and creme brûlée. The foie gras came with two huge pieces -- more than I have ever seen served at any restaurant (approximately double what you would expect so you can definitely share with someone). It's seared to perfection and comes with fresh marmalade, sufficient bread (many fancy French places don't give a lot of bread but I am a huge lover of bread - I need it with every bite of my foie gras - so I was very happy with it). I am still dreaming of it to this day. If you are a foie gras lover like myself, you MUST ORDER. The roasted duck breast was also very good. The portion is so generous and I loved the sweet sauce. I didn't love the French lentils but I also tend to be very picky with vegetables. Creme brûlée was also good but pretty standard for a good creme brûlée. We were both stuffed at this point but thought it would be nice to order a dessert to finish off a Valentine's Day meal - we ended up eating all of it :) The only downside about the food is that the bread served initially was not warm. It's a small issue but this always affects my initial impression of a place. Service was also impeccable. Food came out in a timely manner and staff were attentive. We also arrived 15 minutes late (7:15pm instead of 7pm) and called ahead to make sure this was okay because Valentine's Day can be a busy time and we didn't want our table to given away. They were very honest and said it was fine as long as we left before the next reservation which was at 9pm. We definitely tried to make it out before 9pm to be respectful but ended up staying a bit longer and they didn't rush us at all. Overall very pleased :)

Yelp
La Voile is a very cute restaurant located in the heart of Back Bay on Newbury. The restaurant would be so cute in the spring with outdoor seating once it warms up. We sat in the bar area where it was cozy and inviting. We started with Le Saumon Fume which was smoked salmon with quail eggs and caviar. The smoked salmon was not amazing but it was a big portion size for a starter. For my main, I ordered La Magret which was roasted duck breast. Very unique flavor and I was surprised by how good the lentils were. Lastly, we had the La Mousse au Chocolat and Le Millefeuilles which was a puff pastry with vanilla cream, caramel and fruit. Both were absolutely wonderful! They tend to get pretty busy so definitely try to make a reservation in advance. It's a great spot in a great location!

Yelp
Such a lovely restaurant. Cheese platter was delicate. Wine was delightful- anytime we can find a RED Sancerre we are happy! Such a pretty spot to have lunch on a beautiful day!
