15 Festive Hotels in the U.S. for Holiday Magic

"Every December this quiet retreat in Southern California transforms its tranquil lakeside into a Winter Wonderland. During weekends in December at the Lakehouse Resort, you can walk through the 140-foot-long light tunnel and delight in the makers market on the lakeside lawn. For a special dinner, reserve one of the hotel's twinkling igloos for an exclusive two-hour meal on the lakefront. Afterward, treat yourself to a train ride or a special lake cruise in a boat that's been decked out for the holiday season." - Travel + Leisure Editors

California Hotels That Aren't on the Coast

"The word 'lakehouse' conjures up a certain rustic charm and, if you’re lucky, memories of childhood vacations gone by: days spent swimming and boating, evenings spent chatting around a fire, nights spent wrapped in quilts and quiet. The Lakehouse Hotel and Resort, on the shores of Lake San Marcos, north of San Diego, takes the best of the lakehouse experience and removes the downsides — there’s housekeeping here, for example, along with the other pleasures of a luxury boutique hotel experience." - Mark Fedeli

Loved my stay at Lakehouse Resort! The rooms were clean, the parking was plentiful, and the pizza we had at Amalfi was one of the best ones we have tasted in the US! Next time we will get a room closer to the water and spend more time enjoying the property grounds.

We had a blast at Lakehouse Resort! We live fairly local in San Diego, and none of us knew this little gem existed. The resort staff was very nice and even let us check in early. We paddled and kayaked the lake, enjoyed the pool and had a great dinner at Amalfi. A great weekend!!

Love the resort and the upcoming improvements will make it even better. Can’t wait to come back. The food is always great at Amalfi too. We had a lakeview room and waking up to the view really makes a difference. The welcome drink kicks off your stay and the service is warm and friendly.

My nieces and I had a wonderful time at the Lake House Resort. Staff was wonderful made them feel welcomed at check in. The room was Beautiful and Clean. The view of the lake was amazing. Enjoyed our evening walking around. Will definitely be coming back.

Great time. Lots of young families so not a couples getaway place. Room was clean and comfortable. Pool was crowded on the weekends but better on the week. Hard to get shade-hotel needs to purchase more umbrellas for the pool. Restaurant was great-room or pool side service. Liked using the canoes. Would come back with the family

This is our 2nd time staying here. We will not be returning. The 1st time we stayed, my husband was charged 2x by accident, and was refunded a few days later for the duplicate charge. At check-in the 1st time, even though we clearly were standing there with our dog, we were not charged a pet fee. When we got to our room, we thought it was nice, room service from Brickman's was amazing. We had decided at that time to make Lakehouse Resort our bi-weekly getaway spot. The 2nd time we stayed, we were charged a pet fee. I told the front desk representative that we were unaware of a pet fee and was not charged at our previous stay 2 weeks prior. In front of the front desk representative, I asked my husband if he would rather stay somewhere else. The front desk representative was kind and offered to upgrade our room for free and see about waiving 1/2 of our pet fee. Since we were already there and was offered a free upgrade and was hopeful about 1/2 of the pet fee being waived, we decided to stay. We stayed in #1106. We went back to check on our pet fee being partially waived, but unfortunately was informed they were unable to. We should not have been given that hope of the pet fee being waived in the first place, if they were just going to turn around and say they cannot waive the fee. It was very disappointing. We felt like we were just being told what we wanted to hear to persuade us to stay. We were very disappointed and highly unsatisfied because the room was much smaller than the room they supposedly upgraded us from. It felt like a downgrade. The room felt dirty, and the layout was not appealing. The bathroom was so tiny, the paint on the bathroom wall was peeling off, the water pressure was so low, and there was this weird, loud humming noise the whole time from who knows what. Lakehouse Resort rooms are pricey, and our room definitely did not meet pricey room standard. We are definitely not making this our bi-weekly getaway anymore. I do not recommend Lakehouse Resort. I am currently here in our room writing this review. We have been here since Friday 11/1, and checking out today, 11/3. My coworkers, friends, and family are going to be asking me about our stay. Unfortunately, I have nothing good to say this time. I feel bad that my husband wasted his money on our stay. Never again. Now we'll have to find another bi-weekly getaway spot.

I love the Lakehouse resort and it has become a regular place to stay for me for overnight stay cations. The food is excellent at the restaurants and the burger at the Brigmans is one of the best I've had cooked to your liking to perfection. Took a friend from Switzerland and she enjoyed it immensely. Love the free activities such as biking and hitting a bucket of balls. The coffees and breakfast burrito at Spinnakers is good as well. No complaints whatsoever.

Nice getaway in a tucked away location on San Marcos Lake. Will return for my next trip to or near San Diego. The hotel stay highlight is the free attractions including free 1 hour kayak/paddleboard, free bike rentals, and free 1 bucket of golf balls to use at nearby driving range. Also included free welcome drinks. Front desk is not particularly friendly or welcoming. Our 2 double bed room was spacious with clean bathroom and high ceilings.
