Land Of Plenty - Review - Midtown - New York - The Infatuation

"Part of the small cluster of quality Sichuan restaurants in Midtown, Land Of Plenty excels at more upscale Sichuan preparations while also nailing everyday classics. The camphor tea-smoked duck is perfectly done, with a strong tea aroma, crisp skin, and juicy meat underneath. The mapo tofu and cellophane noodles with ground pork - known to many Chinese by the poetic name “ants climbing a tree” - are both delicious standbys. Fish, frog, and lamb also come in many iterations that may be familiar to anyone who has spent ample time traveling around Sichuan province. However, if you’re really after some heat, try the braised goat hot pot with five-alarm intensity, which is hard to find anywhere else in New York. Food Rundown Hot and Sour Cellophane Noodles This is one of the best versions of suan la fen you’ll find in New York. The slick, thin cellophane noodles soak up the spicy, numbing, and tangy sauce beautifully. Slurping them can get messy, but just keep some extra napkins nearby. Camphor Tea Smoked Duck This rendition of a Sichuan classic is perfectly done, with a strong tea aroma, crisp skin, and juicy meat underneath. The only things missing are the steamed mantou buns that this duck is usually served with, but the duck is still excellent on its own or over rice or noodles. Braised Goat Meat with Chungking Hot Pot Spiced A dish that’s difficult to find in New York, this Sichuan hotpot has five-alarm intensity and a wonderful smoky flavor. We recommend pacing yourself here because the heat comes on slowly and builds." - Diana Kuan

14 Mouth-Numbing Sichuan Restaurants in NYC - Eater NY

"When it opened a decade ago, Land of Plenty defined a new upscale style in Sichuan cuisine. Decorated with antique farm equipment on stark white wells, it radiated a staid East Side atmosphere, but even then the food was shocking in its heat and depth of flavor. Order anything with the three chiles symbol, and you can depend on it being mouth-searing, including Madame Song’s seafood noodles, poached rabbit, and crispy tofu with roast chile and cumin. Unlike many similar spots, the lunch specials are not watered down." - Robert Sietsema, Serena Dai

I really wanted to enjoy the food, but unfortunately, 2 out of the 3 dishes we ordered were quite bland. The stir-fried vegetables with tofu, which cost nearly $18 without any meat, lacked seasoning, and the ingredients tasted old and had a mushy smell. We expected better at that price point. The trio vegetables with garlic sauce was the only dish we liked. The service was okay—nothing wrong with our server. Also, only the front section of the restaurant was lit, which is understandable since it was not a crowded afternoon. Based on this experience, we do not plan to return, especially with so many other Sichuan restaurants in NYC offering better-tasting food.

Google
Love this Chinese resto. So close to Roosevelt island and my colleagues also enjoy eating here everytime. Very sweet people and their prices are amazingly good. No wonder its always packed

Google
I've been there twice with friends! The lunch specials are cheap, varied and tasty!

Google
Love this place for the lunch specials. Some of the best stuff are the szecuan dishes like mapo tofu, dried string beans, etc. The pork belly with with water chestnuts is a dinner favorite. The smoked duck fried rice is great too. One review said the food is microwaved, heck no. They're fast and well prepared. for a busy lunch. Good service always.

Google
Land of Plenty offers authentic Sichuan cuisine with bold, flavorful dishes. The waiter was friendly and attentive, and the prices are very reasonable for the quality of food. Don’t miss their desserts—they’re unique and a perfect way to end your meal. Highly recommend this place for anyone craving genuine Sichuan flavors!

Google
Our favorite GO TO for Chinese food in the city. The food is consistently tasty and the service is always fast. Price is very reasonable and we love the friendly professional people who make this restaurant exceptional! Thank you! 💎

Google
One of the best places for lunch especially if you're in a hurry and need to head back to work. Land of Plenty doesn't mess around. You're in and out! With that being said, the food is always solid. Get yourself some chow fun and, well, have fun. 🥢

Google
Went there with my family. We had a really good time. All dishes were good or very good. Some are hot and spicy, typical of the szechuan cusine. Ambience has some sofistication to it, and service is pleasant. A perfect option to go in groups and try out some flavorful spicy asian dishes.

Yelp
Delicious and very reasonable lunch deal. Had the pork with Miso and I'm dreaming of it

Yelp
Cosy atmosphere, fast service and tasty food. Reasonably priced. Many non spicy menu items to choose from if spicy food is not your forte.

Yelp
Nice place with good service and good food and tea. Very aesthetically relaxing after a long day too. What took the cake though was a couple with their kids having a full blown argument with the woman calling the man a terrible father and the man storming out saying he's not coming home tonight and the kids asking them to stop fighting. The restaurant kept playing very sad piano music as she sat alone with the check.

Yelp
This is a great Sichuan restaurant in midtown east. Food tastes great, and staff are very professional and nice. Will come back again.

Yelp
The food and service at land of plenty is terrific. I am sorry that I don't live right near it because I would go there every week. Their fillet of fish with cabbage and chilies is out of this world and the prices are great.

Yelp
Food is amazing. Don't listen to the haters because this local spot gives me life. I hope I've got the character count.

Yelp
Craving something not too expense in Midtown and stumbled on this place. I love Chinese food so I was very excited. Food: 5/5 I ordered four dishes with two bowls of rice and the bill came below $60. Which is honestly never happens at a sit down in Midtown East. We ordered Dan Dan Noodle, Mapo Tofu, Szechuan Pork Dumpling with Chili Soy, and Hot and Sour Cellophane noodles. Honestly, for $9 the Dan Dan are definitely worth it! I will definitely come back for Mapo and Dan Dan. All in all, I definitely plan to going back for dinner and lunch sometime!
google avatar

Yelp
The staff is accommodating to food allergies. They were able to make my food gluten free which is difficult with Chinese food and most places will not. All their food is delicious and everyone I have eaten there with is always happy with their food.
google avatar

Yelp
I always thought finding good decently priced Chinese food was a difficult feat in Midtown. Land of Plenty proved me wrong with their variety of great lunch specials. Although they market themselves as a sichuan restaurant, they also offer some other Chinese dishes that are not just spicy. For their weekday lunch specials, for ~$11-13 (excl tax and tip), you can get good Chinese food with generous portions. They also have various vegetable only dishes for any vegetarians out there. I loved my Spicy Fish Filets w. Silky Tofu - it was delicious and they were able to make it less spicy for me upon my request. Each lunch special comes with a rice and a choice of appetizer. I will say not all items are made equally - I got their Singaporean Chow mein, and it didn't have enough wok hei and I could taste the curry powder. Overall, a great lunch spot!

Yelp
Again a really good takeout dinner from this restaurant! This time we chose the chilled sesame noodles as our appetizer; it was delicious, a tad spicy as it should be. Husband had sliced chicken and baby eggplant, same as last time and he demolished it! I decided that soup could vanquish the last remnants of a cold, so I ordered assorted mushrooms with baby bok choy, roasted garlic, and dried shrimp (that's those tiny ones, which of course soften in the hot broth) in broth. There were ample mushrooms and heads of baby bok choy as well as at least half a bulb's worth of roasted garlic cloves. Filling, satisfying, tasty!

Yelp
Fully obsessed with this place the scallion pancakes were amazing and the bartender was so great and friendly and the music was great and lovely vibes. One million stars

Yelp
All time favorite spot for Chinese in the upper east side! This is a go to spot for me and my brother, and it never disappoints. Their stir fried chicken with roasted chili is SO delicious! If you are a fan of spicy food-this is a must have. I can't come here and not order this! The staff is very nice and attentive as well. As soon as you walk in, they seat you very quickly and the food comes out in no time! I've had the food here both in person and through take out, and each are equally as good! Highly recommend

Yelp
The food wasn't very seasoned. At all. I'm a foodie and I showed up hungry. I barely ate half of my food and didn't take the leftovers home.

Aviva S.

Yelp
Food was very good! Waiter couldn't have been more friendly and accommodating. I liked the lazy Susan's which reminded me of the restaurants when I was a kid. Also had spare ribs which you can't find at too many places.
google avatar

Banana R.

Yelp
Very spicy but very good! Given the spice level (high) they should prolly have a seltzer gun, but they doing cans so be forewarned. Might need a few of the ol bubblies to make it through the food. Also good people watching. Bathrooms are clean.

Yelp
Stumbled upon an amazing Szechuan Chinese food in Midtown East area. I wasn't quite sure what to expect with there being so many Chinese places near by but this place was a pleasant surprise. Service was phenomenal. Our server was quick, very friendly and super attentive. The only negative was the portion size of their beef. It was tiny compared to everything else. It was delicious but just not a lot for the price of the dish. This is the only reason I'm giving them a 4 stars It is also not a cheap eats place but a great spot for authentic and delicious Szechuan Chinese food.

Roger S.

Yelp
It's raining heavy out. I was wondering what I should eat to bring me out of the mood of the wet and dark evening. The one dish that I feel defines a Great Northern Chinese restaurant is how they cook a fish. Fish is precious in the northern Mountains. They cook them and present them with respect. The one fish dish to me that proof a Northern Chinese restaurant's worth is Braised Whole Tilapia with Chili Miso. Many cook it. You'll find this dish on most Chinese restaurants menu in NYC. But this dish at Plenty is authentic and I feel is the best in the city. Try the rest and then the one at Plenty. It's seriously great here.

Adith k.

Yelp
My everyday take out place. Lunch menu L12 kung pao chicken, I love it. The other items can be a hit or a miss.

Matthew G.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere and excellent authentic Sichuan dishes. We will be going there often.
google avatar

CJ R.

Yelp
I I've been here a couple of times but I've never given a review This place is a hit or miss, nice ambience, like bougie Chinese restaurant a bit pricey, but it doesn't have that oily smell of the restau. Some of their food are really good, i can bet my life for their dumplings but for some food stuff that I tried i'd say I am not a fan. I'm still going to recommended new people to go and try this place if you're an upper east side bcoz its one of those I can say the better ones without the need to drive going to Chinatown.

Yelp
Sichuan/Chinese restaurant offering a wide range menu. Started with the Spicy Cumin Lamb, which was very spicy but the best dish on the menu. The Sichuan peppers really cleared up the sinuses. General Tso has very juicy, tender chicken pieces which is great, as many Chinese restaurants I've had tend to be dry and stringy. The Chicken and Broccoli was good. I appreciate the amount of broccoli that was provided. All dishes were served with white rice as well.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here with family and was hoping this place wouldn't let me down. We got the couples delight, the fish fillets in Chile oil, cumin lamb, Dan Dan noodles, and tea egg. I think this place is probably a 3.5, but there were some standout dishes. The cumin lamb was my favorite one I've ever had. It was tender and absolutely smothered in cumin spice. The duck my mom loved because of how strong the tea flavor was (I just don't think I'm a tea duck person). The fish fillet was good, nothing to write home about. I wish it was spicier and had more numbing flavor. The couples delight also needed more spice imo. The dan dan noodles were slippery without much chewiness (to my disdain).

Yelp
I've offered prior reviews (5/5 stars) and most recent (which I did not post or review) was last Monday, March 25th - everything perfect. Amazes me that make some dishes so well, because I've also cooked most of this menu with pretty great (but still inferior) results. Today was another experience altogether. Did they lose their chef? Two of three dishes were so bad as to be inedible (total waste). So here's the dets: L1. Spicy Fish Filet Lunch (5/5 stars) Same as last Monday. Perfect score. Fresh soft tofu, some pickle on top. Really great dish. L14. Amazing Chicken Lunch (0/5 stars) Inedible. Rubery chicken with glupy sauce tasted like vinegar added to hot and sour sauce. No spice or heat at all and not even close to what was described. L16. General Tso's Chicken Lunch (0/5 stars) Inedible. Huge pieces of deep fried chicken with glupy massively sweet sauce tasted like hot and sour sauce. Again, no spice or heat at all and not even close to what was described. I've been coming here better part of 20 years, but I guess that's over :( PS - if you can place me in touch with the chef that used to be there, I'll gladly revise this review.

Yelp
Quiet, comfortable restaurant with tasty food. We had dumplings, the seafood hot and sour soup, and a chicken dish. The soup was probably the most interesting thing we had, a light, spicy bowl to share, with bits of assorted seafood. Service is attentive and amiable. We'll be back, probably when we want a tasty Szechuan lunch in a spot suited to a quiet conversation.

Yelp
Incredible soup dumplings, love the chicken and broccoli too. Great service, nice spacious big place with a lot of seating. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Named after the Sichuan province, which is nicknamed the land of abundance (plenty), this restaurant hits the spot when you don't want to (or are not able to) make the trek to Flushing. True to the trait that Sichuan cuisine is renowned for, most of the dishes here are numbingly spicy and full of flavor. It is safe to assume that any menu item described as "braised" will have a high heat index. I've enjoyed everything I have tried here, but would most strenuously recommend the braised potatoes with chicken, the stir-fried chicken with roasted chilies and Asian green chilies, and the braised filets of fish with Napa cabbage and roasted chilies. Of course, all of these are very spicy, but then, this is a Sichuan restaurant and you should expect to find dishes that will make you sweat as you eat, and remind you of your indulgence the next morning! The restaurant is somewhat hard to spot due to the inconspicuous signage. It is on 58th street, near the southeast corner of 3rd Ave and 58th street.

Yelp
Land of plenty is excellent I highly recommend the Eggplant with garlic dish, The string beans . We also ordered the sautéed fish dish also excellent. We always leave out the pork or meat out of any of the ones that have it and the restaurant is very accommodating. We frequent Land of Plenty when we visit my mother- in NYC .She lives in the building next door to the restaurant. We order from it for the great food not just for convenience. I think you'll really enjoy Land of Plenty .

Yelp
Great pricing for lunch, and a great spot to take co workers as it is very near a lot of office buildings. Service was fast and efficient, Enjoyed the stewed pork over rice.

Yelp
Land of Plenty is my mom and my go-to authentic Chinese restaurant. They have an impressive selection of dishes found from all over China that are hard to find at other, run of the mill Chinese joints (like the shredded potato dish that's one of my favorites). The staff is very attentive and friendly, and the food comes out quick. My go-to dishes are the P32 Dry cumin lamb dish, which includes numbing and spicy boneless strips of lamb, and P105 the vegetable trio of green beans, eggplant, and snow peas in spicy garlic sauce. I've had the house special Pot of a Little Bit of Everything that was good if you can't make up your mind and want to try a blend of meat, veggies, and flavors.

Yelp
My office gets lunch from this place every so often , they have decent lunch specials raging from $8.95-10.95. Really like their Chicken & broccoli , the Crispy Orange chicken , General T'sos, Sesame & Shredded chicken w Garlic sauce all pretty decent options we tend to order from the lunch specials it comes w rice good Fried Rice , decent Brown or white u also get a Spring roll which is tasty or Soup of your choice The Hot & Sour soup as well as the Wonton are both good choices. Chicken lo mein & Mei Fun .. noodles are usually a go to dish great tasting noodles the Mei Fun both noodle dishes loaded I always get Chicken with either. Pork dumplings & Honey glazed spare ribs are decent apps to try. During quarantine these guys were open for delivery or pick up , contact less pick up a good idea during these times. Service for take out has usually been pretty good, they are decent & quick not a bad place for lunch in the rea.

Yelp
Reasonable Chinese food that is best visited when tackling the occasional urge for quick, wide-ranging Asian food cravings. $15 a dish. 3.75/5 stars as a lunch spot.
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered the lunch special. Spicy eggplant with garlic sauce. It wasn't spicy and the sauce was delicious. The price for lunch is reasonable ~$9 and portion size was perfect.

Yelp
Cheap, delicious, and hidden Chinese spot with a pretty basic interior that has been recommended by the Michelin restaurant guide for a couple of years now. I walked in with my girlfriend on a Sunday at 2 PM and it was pretty empty. They have paper napkins, but the rest of the silverware is pretty nice. They also have great complimentary tea. I ordered the steamed vegetables with tofu and the vegetable dumplings. They were both pretty basic, but very good. The staff was pretty pushy and not very warm. It is very cheap for the quality of food. 8.75/10

M. D.

Yelp
I was prepared to give the food (via delivery) about 3 stars.. nothing great/standout but wasn't inedible. But then a few hours later we woke up in the middle of the night, and you know the rest We didn't order anything so out of the box so I am just wary of the quality of this place. (Orange chicken was mostly dough, dumplings and apps were meh). Personally won't be ordering from here again though my neighbors are always raving about it. Disappointing

Yelp
Not bad! Came here for a quick lunch date and they have plenty to offer on their lunch special. Got the stir fried chicken with black bean sauce and vegetables for $9.55 and it was so yummy! Black bean sauce is one of my favorites. Plenty of chicken and veggies. You get your choice of rice and appetizer. Pretty solid deal for this area and it's in a fairly nice establishment too. Sit down dining at it's finest for a Chinese place. Easy to get a seat and there's plenty of tables.

Lauren S.

Yelp
Went here on a whim with my boyfriend for a late lunch and had some of the BEST Szechuan food i have ever had in my entire life. The service was phenomenal, and the food was absolutely out of this world. it is definitely a new staple for us, we're already planning on what we're getting when we go back! our whole experience was an 11/10! get the smoked wok tossed chicken with chili (P30) and the szechuan pork dumplings with roast sweet chili soy (101)
google avatar

Strad Y.

Yelp
It was the first time finally I walked in and so many years after I have gone by that place. Ordered chicken, meat dishes, tested great but I can't help to notice that amongst items, three of the dishes one chicken, and two porks were looked almost the same! (See images) The white rice came out so hard, inedible! What happened to the short grains we eat at home? 米饭僵硬,菜码都一样! For me, it almost seemed that chef is lacking of craftsmanship, they are great dishes when you are hungry however, I will get bored by the second time, so probably I will move on.

Thomas A.

Yelp
If you are looking for good food and horrendous service, this is the place for you. If you want to be treated like your not welcome and the servers time is more important then Yours, come here. I have frequented this place often and I like the food but always feel like I am not welcome and treated poorly. I would recommend this place if you feel you deserve to be treated as your narcissistic cousin would treat you, then welcome yourself here!
google avatar

Rita C.

Yelp
Always delicious! We usually order the same amazing dishes. Love coming early and enjoying the food and the quiet atmosphere. The staff is welcoming and courteous and the food always comes out super fast!

Yelp
Sichuan cuisine. Nice decor - good for business lunch. Portion was good. Taste was fair - just like other Sichuan places (nothing special) but clean. Enjoyed it. 川菜。东西挺干净的(我经常吃到不干净的川菜肚子疼),环境很典雅适合聚会,分量也挺好的。味道不出众吧,就正常。

Yelp
Value: 7/10 Experience: 7/10 Taste: 8.5/10 Solid and authentic Chinese restaurant we found on the Bib Gourmand list. This place isn't Chinese take out. This is a nicer place where you sit down and order higher quality food. I highly recommend the spicy pork belly!

Yelp
Best Chinese restaurant around the neighborhood. I've sat down at the restaurant a handful of times and ordered delivery from here multiple times. Their delivery is quick and efficient, the food always gets here nice and warm and the portions are really big. At times, I've experienced some inconsistency in their dishes but it's overall rare (maybe I've noticed because I order from here so much). A bit stingy with the soy sauce when ordering delivery. Everything I've ordered from the land of plenty has always tasted really good and looked really good as well.

While the food was generally okay, I did notice on some occasions that the meat at this restaurant was not fresh. Additionally, I had the unpleasant experience of finding human hairs in my food

Yelp
Solid spot! Reliable delivery, good quality ingredients and tasty. I wouldn't say I loved every dish but I think this is the best Chinese delivery restaurant I have found in the area.

Yelp
Got the Braised Mushrooms and the Amazing Chicken, both of which were very tasty. The Amazing Chicken was not as spicy as I would have liked it to be.

Yelp
The sesame chicken had the TINIEST bit of what was supposed to be chicken. What they delivered was mostly sweet dough. The taste was mediocre but if you're looking for value for the money avoid this place at all cost. A bit pricey and what turned out to be tiny portions of chicken. SMH

Yelp
Go to Chinese restaurant in midtown east for authentic food and fast service. The ambience is modern and chic. They do have a big menu of Sichuan cuisine and American Chinese options.

Yelp
Very solid good Chinese food. You can have an authentic experience or go for more Americanized options
