The “It” Burgers Across The Country, Ranked From Thinnest To Thickest - The Infatuation

"When LeRoy and Lewis moved to a permanent space this year, it quickly became our highest-rated barbecue spot in Austin for its tender beef cheeks and miso glazed carrots. The burger here honors Central Texas barbecue traditions: the ½-pound brisket patty gets smoked, giving it a peppery crust and a juicy interior, and the springy potato roll and chopped onions add a little bit of sweetness to each bite." - anne cruz

I’ve been here a few times now and it never disappoints. This time I grabbed the Tuesday special – the BBQ chicken bowl – and it hit the spot. The chicken was grilled perfectly, tender with great flavor, paired with fluffy white rice and a good mix of veggies. Comes with a drink too, which is a nice touch. The service is always friendly and quick, and the food stays consistently great every time I visit. Definitely one of my favorites spots when I’m in south austin

Just left the place AC is broken felt like an oven inside. I was more upset because food was burnt paid I paid a whopping $99 for horrible burn food. Out of all the L &L’s I’ve been to this one horrible.

Google
This place "Broke da mouth"! My family agrees that the Loco Moco (w/2 beef patties, eggs, gravy, mac salad & rice), the Chicken Katsu and BBQ Beef plates were fantastic... honestly better than the same L&Ls on Oahu. Granted that we were hungry, but the amount of food on each plate, the quality and taste absolutely did not disappoint! Each of us (family of 4 w/2 teenage boys) were satisfied & full! Definitely coming back whenever we want a taste of the Islands!

Google
Lumpia good. Bbq chicken burnt not charred. Was given the wrong shrimp and veggies tasted water logged. Chicken katsu had no seasoning.

Google
Dude, yall need to hire someone who's not gonna burn the meat . My food looked like plated charcoal with rice and Mac. Im very disappointed in this location. Definitely wont be a next time anymore. I didnt believe the reviews cause ive been here before and it was never like this.

Google
Good was absolutely delicious! You get a HUGE portion that is definitely shareable so order and share. They also have daily specials. The staff is very nice and helpful while you learn the menu.

Google
Authentic, delicious and will definitely satisfy your plate-lunch cravings! However, they do need to slide in a sheet of foil on the styro for the to-go orders (see pic)

Google
The lumpia was on par for what it is, good. My gf and I both got a musubi, which is similar to a sushi roll, rice and your choice of protein wrapped in seaweed. I got the spam one and really liked it, had a good flavor. My gf liked hers which was the chicken katsu musubi, had a very good crispy chicken crunch. I got the loco moco and it was so goooood. Basically a hamburger steak with gravy over a bed of white rice, served with macaroni salad. I may go back weekly for this. My gf got the grilled chicken plate which she liked, I thought the chicken was okay. Will definitely be back. Took it to-go, I will say the dining area was kind of small. But I’d still eat there cuz the food is so good .

Yelp
I PROMISE YALL ARE SLEEPING ON L&L! The food is made fresh, so please be patient or order ahead! One time I ordered for lunch and ran a bit late at work and they called me to be sure everything was ok and offered accommodation to keep my food fresh. The staff is always sweet and considerate. Food is ALWAYS delicious, Chicken BBQ plate is my favorite and the Mac salad is to die for! This location does have seating but it is limited so I mainly take it to go.

Yelp
I was so excited to see a L&L Hawaiian BBQ in Austin, TX, as my 1st experience of L&L's was in the original location in Oahu, HI, back in 1992. The Mac salad and rice with any of the BBQ/Katsu selections would be wonderful, BUT Unfortunately that is not the case here in 2025, in Austin, TX. While the service is friendly and nice, the Hawaiian BBQ is not cooked/prepared like the original ones in Hawaii. The place is clean and vibes were good, just the food and taste missed the mark. Those that haven't been to the Hawaii and California locations wouldn't know better and that's fine. As someone who's been eating L&L for 33 years, it's not right for me. Wishing them only the best... Aloha

Yelp
I've been a huge fan of L&L in the past. There are a few of them back up in Seattle, so I was excited to find one here in Austin. I wasn't crazy hungry, but still want to try it in hopes that it would make me think the good memories back home. I ordered just one katsu musubi and it took 29 minutes to make. I understand that it's a smaller business and they I have other orders going on, and I would have been forgiving if the katsu musubi was at least hot and fresh. But unfortunately it was just above lukewarm and felt like it had been sitting for a bit. It sucked that that was my first experience of L&L outside of Washington. Hopefully it was just an off day for the team and it will be much better next time.

Yelp
First time at Austin location and was so excited! Ordered Chicken Katsu plate to go during lunch and gave a $4 tip- there were only 2 other customers inside. When I got my bag there was one peace of napkin so I asked for a few more which she gave me two more pieces. When I got home the chicken Katsu was over cooked almost burnt or maybe it was reheated that the meat was a bit tough. The macaroni and rice were pretty good but a bit disappointed withy experience. I love L & L and have always had a good experience (California locations) so will definitely give this location another chance and will come back again.

Yelp
Being from Hawaii, I used to go here for my local food cravings but I can't justify it anymore. Especially after this last time. I always get the katsu and the last three times I've been, it's been overcooked, dry, and under seasoned. It's slowly been turning me off from this spot because it's not cheap... but this last time I went with my MIL who was craving local food and she ordered brown rice because of her diabetes and apparently they don't carry brown rice when literally every L&L I've been carries it. It was even an option on their POS system. After we placed our order, someone came out from the kitchen and said that they don't carry brown rice and then proceeded to go into the kitchen and start saying "who orders brown rice?" And just being condescending. It just was super rude for a restaurant that claims to carry the aloha spirit. Do better!

Yelp
Today we went back to L&L barbecue to try their wonderful barbecue chicken. And as always, it was excellent. It is consistent time after time. And the service was great as well. So if you're looking for Hawaiian, chicken experience, look no further than L&L barbecue. I give it five stars.

Yelp
Stopped by this past weekend after ordering through the L&L app. Our order was ready shortly after we arrived. Received very friendly service, nice sized portions and good Hawaiian BBQ!

Yelp
Y'all this was good Hawaiian comfort food! I give 5 stars if I want to return and bring a friend. My family would LOVE this place. The only thing worth mentioning is that the parking is tight and can be limiting. There isn't much seating inside and it may take a while to get your food around lunchtime because it was packed! A very good sign when you see locals there. Now the food - I got the chicken katsu (Tender pieces of deep-fried boneless chicken, this best-seller is served with our piquant katsu sauce) and it was crispy and delicious. It comes with katsu dipping sauce which made all the difference. There was also white rice and macaroni salad. All very good. My wife got the lava chicken and also liked it. She isn't a fan of spicy or dark meat but liked the dish. I had some and loved it! It also came with white rice and macaroni salad. I also got one spam musubi! An island classic composed of a slice of grilled SPAM on rice, wrapped in dried seaweed. Lastly the staff was so chill and nice!

Yelp
Small cozy restaurant with welcoming decor. I had the Lilikoi (passionfruit) lemonade; pulled Kaluha pork with cabbage bowl; and fried katsu chicken musubi all of which were great!
google avatar

Isaac K.

Yelp
I ordered a BBQ mixed plate for delivery and only received the Kalbi ribs. Where's the rest of the meat? So expensive for nothing. Never again

Yelp
We moved to Austin about 1 years ago ago from Las Vegas and so when I found out we have an L&L here in Austin I had to go. Luah plate my husband loved it, was not over cooked the pork had the right amount of seasoning BBQ plate- I was disappointed on this one the ribs was thin and mostly bones, my moms mixed BBQ plate her rib was bigger then the 3 of mine combined. I do have to admit the flavor was on point reminded me of back home. Lunch for 3 plate $71 w/a 20%tip Hopefully the owner will read this review and make a change looks like I'm not the only one who complained about the size of the rib.

Yelp
The first time I actually tried this delicious food was in an other state suggested by my sis. When we heard they opened one up here in Austin we made a family visit to get our grub on. My bro happened to be visiting so we took him and my mom. We had the Kalbi short ribs, seafood & bbq combo, fried katsu chicken, and masubi. Every single bite of everything was scrumptious. Even the can drinks they have like Hawaiian sun. The bonus was how she was with my mom. My mom is 82 and its a major impact when you treat my mom like a queen and be caring towards her. She personally delivered her food to her and added an extra something to her meal. The spot is small with limited seating but we got to sit and eat our food. the place puts in Hawaii and its bright. Its kept clean. When you walk in you place your order then pick your seat. You can grab your own drinks. There is parking all around, you just have to find your spot. Definitely worth checking it out. Its full of flavor, filling meal and they are sweet people.

Yelp
Food is disgusting. Ordered a Big Mix Plate and the food is burned and disgusting. Would not recommend this nasty and disgusting place

Phyllis W.

Yelp
Great food and nice portions. The food was fresh and delicious. Large selection of Hawaiian soft drinks.

Yelp
Well I've been to Hawaii a bunch of times and love the loco moco there and have been by this restaurant restaurant many times but never stopped in until today. This is the same chain that's in Hawaii a small dining room simple good menu. Food was fresh ample hot of the grill. It was tasty just like the island. For Hawaiian it can't be beat and prices are great.
google avatar

Charli V.

Yelp
Love it! So much better than the other franchise chain! Came here on a Sunday afternoon with baby Camille and my partner. There are 7 tables set up for dine in and they were alll occupied! Love to see it. The wait for your order is about 10-15 minutes so you know it's fresh to order. We got 2 spam musubis and 1 bbq beef plate. The beef marinade is so so good. Spam to rice ratio for the musubi is almost 1:3. The plastic utensils are kind of a disappointment. They don't cut well and shatter easily. The Mac salad is delicious. They have several cans of Hawaiian beverages for $3.00/ can. and some Pepsi product fountain drinks. Overall, L&L is a great addition to this area and we can wait to see them excel

Yelp
Third time was NOT the charm. I was super disappointed when I went back for the third time. I was craving Hawaiian food and going to this place was such a let down that it ruined my whole day. Food portion was weak and looked like they just threw bits and pieces into the plate. The meat were chewy and over cooked. It tasted off and was super rubbery. Not sure if it was fresh to begin with. You know something is wrong when they can't even cook rice correctly. That's a major boooboo. I love LL as a franchise but this location I'll never go back again. I'll just have to drive 20miles north to go to a solid authentic Hawaiian food truck. Yall know which one I'm talking about!!
google avatar

Yelp
After learning about the new L&L Hawaiian Barbecue location here in Austin last night I wasted no time checking it out. Btw, Sarah one of the co-owners told me they're looking for a spot in town for a second Austin location!! While a bit expensive, this place is very authentic and just like the L&L Hawaiian BBQ back home in Hawaii. There's too much good stuff on the menu but I love the BBQ Beef and katsu chicken. The best is to get a mixed plate.
google avatar

kat g.

Yelp
I was so excited when this place opened! First time I went the customer service was subpar bordering on rude. I let it slide. I wanted my Kalbi ribs. Today I ordered delivery and the ribs are so burnt they're inedible. Also the tiny two scoops I got for the extra side of mac salad is laughable. Never again.
google avatar

Brooke D.

Yelp
My coworker recommended this spot to me so me and my friend tried it out. It was pretty good! The Mac salad was awesome and the chicken was pretty good too. I prefer shoyu sugar I think when it comes to austin Hawaiian bbq but this is a great second option. The staff was nice and there was a small bit of seating.
google avatar

Stacey K.

Yelp
Waited 45 minutes for this nonsense. Looks like someone returned their half-eaten plate, then it was given to me. Never again. Embarrassing.
google avatar

Savee L.

Yelp
Service was good. i had a bbq mixed plate, the beef was dry. it took close to 30 minutes for the food to be done and it came out undersatisfying. i also ordered the spam masubi, the seaweed was too chewy and hard to bite off so i ended up taking it off and just eating the rice and spam. ive had L&Ls many times in other locations, unfortunately they did not do a good job in this location.
google avatar

A.J. M.

Yelp
It's not fancy, but it's great. If you want ono grinds, bruddah, you found it. If you're a kama'aina missing Aunty's loco moko, dis da place for you and your ohana. Also, the only spam musubi I've found in Austin that doesn't suck.
google avatar

Isac F.

Yelp
We've been in Texas now for about 8 years and it was time we found this little hidden Mahalo Nui Loa for opening this location... It was an absolute Ohana vibe.. The music was like listening to my own playlist. The service was no ka oi! Very pleasant staff with the aloha spirit On to why you're reading this... it was 4 of us so we ordered 4 different things .. I ordered the BBQ mix. The meat was extremely savory and tender. The rice was just perfect and the macaroni salad was flavorful and a perfect mix of ingredients. There are some of these mixes that are too heavy on the tuna or mustard or other things that they may add .. nothing overpowering all just perfectly blended. My son in law ordered the Katsu chicken.. from his face it was by far one of the best reactions I've seen from him with food. It looked lightly and we'll breaded with the perfect crunch and with the moistness chicken should have. My bride had the BBQ Beef... she couldn't stop raving about how soft the meat was was to the bite. Not chewy and fatty.. great job grilling this!! My daughter ordered the BBQ Chicken... and like the beef... moist and perfectly grilled. I loved what they asked me before I left.... You comin tomorrow!!?? ha!! So Hawaiian.. they wus like cuzzins already... BTW, my sis lives in Lahaina.. and family has live in Maui for 29+ years.. so yes... definitely a good place for people from the rock...

Yelp
Can't believe Austin now has its very own L&L. As someone who grew up on an island, I'm stoked that it has loco moco and spam musubis. We came here mostly for the katsu and it did not disappoint. To top it off, I love the ambiance, and the employees were above and beyond so nice. I'd
google avatar

Steven X.

Yelp
Food taste wise, I'd prob give this place a 3.5. But the prices were surprisingly fair so I bumped it to 4. We tried spam and katsu musubi. I thought the spam one lacked sweetness - should do a slight sugar glaze. Garlic shrimp isn't what I expected as it came out fried. Still good though. Loved the kalbi and chicken.

Kana I.

Yelp
Great food, friendly service, and awesome portion sizes!! I stopped by here a while back with my boyfriend. We ordered the bbq plate and the chicken katsu plate, and both were delicious!!! The chicken katsu was fried to perfection, super crunchy and juicy on the inside. I also loved how tender and flavorful the kalbi in the bbq plate was. The mac salad is to die for! Best of all, the portion sizes were huge and it was almost enough for two meals for us. The guy with white glasses and long-ish hair that served us was also super friendly. Overall, we had an amazing time and we'll definitely be back soon for some of the best Hawaiian food in Austin!
google avatar

Jon P H.

Yelp
I'm a local boy Kaiser high grad 81 Honolulu missed my KC Drive-In when I found out l&l was here had to go was please two Scoops rice one scoop macaroni salad they use Hellman's you know it the staff rock the food was fresh the chicken was the bomb looking forward to going back to try the chicken katsu which is a Japanese dish but so far five stars worth every. Buck?

Mark B.

Yelp
The service here was good. I ordered the half and half plate lunch with kalua pork and chicken katsu. The chicken katsu was good. Mac salad was just okay. However, the kalua pork was just awful. I took one bite and it was all SALT!!! I couldn't even eat it. Having lived in Hawaii, I have a more discerning taste for local, Hawaiian food. Unless they can serve true-tasting kalua pork, they really should take this off the menu...otherwise people will think this is normal. It's not a good representation of Hawaiian food.
google avatar

Wendy A.

Yelp
The taste of our Hawaii vacation brought to Austin! We loved these plate meals in Oahu. Delicious chicken katsu !! A must try for the family. Aloha!

T. D.

Yelp
Love that L&L finally made it to Austin! The quality is just as good as back west. The spam saimin wasn't much to look at, but the green onion was fresh, the kamaboko was snappy, and the spam was charred outside and so so soft inside. The overall taste gave me goosebumps because it really took me back to the islands. The food was slow to arrive, but I give the benefit of the doubt because 1. They're just opening and 2. They wait staff is working HARD.
google avatar

Gabby L.

Yelp
as soon as i saw the sign going up, i knew we'd be trying this place as soon as it opened. i grew up on L&L as a west coast transplant to austin, so i was looking forward to some homey comfort and it did not disappoint. my husband called to order last friday since their online system wasn't up yet. we got 2 plate lunches - the garlic shrimp and the katsu chicken - and 2 musubi. everything was a little over $40 with tip and portions were - as one would expect- generous! we got at lunch for the next day day as well. the katsu was good, a little bland without the sauce (but who would eat it that way???) but nice and crispy. similar vibes for the mac salad and the rice, but those are supposed to be that way, imo -- a blank palette! recycle it into fried rice the next day if there's too much. musubi were delicious warmed. the garlic shrimp was the highlight, for me, ordered after reading the austinfoodadventures review. super crisp and juicy. everything was ono and we'll be back for sure!
google avatar

Kanta T.

Yelp
Small restaurant from Hawaii. It's real Hawaiian food should try. The way you do as first time visit is you come up to order at a counter and pay. If you do for here they will bring food to you at a table. I never gone to Hawaii but i like their food.

Sarah Jane H.

Yelp
I ordered delivery via door dash. I ordered the BBQ chicken plate, Spam Musubi and chicken Musubi. The chicken had a super 'charred' taste. Not bad just not what I'm used to with Hawaiian bbq. Not super saucy. Which was kind of a bummer since I didn't get any extra Sauce. My Spam musubi was MIA. I got a refund for that. i paid for an extra sauce that I didn't get. The cabbage was like half a handful of shredded cabbage. Overall ok. Definitely not the best Hawaiian bbq I've had but fair.
google avatar

Thomas W.

Yelp
This place hits too consistently not to leave a fiver Hot, fresh, great portions, and well seasoned Tell ya Mama & Nem 'bout it... have spam like D@MN and rice so nice...
google avatar

Tim P.

Yelp
So excited you are in South Austin! Always delicious and kind service. We always get Spam Musubi, Macarroni Salad, and a different protein bowl to share. My favorites are the pork or the chicken Katsu
google avatar

Elaine L.

Yelp
So glad we found this place! The food was excellent! I had the teriyaki chicken. It was juicy and so flavorful! The portion was plentiful as well. The staff were very friendly. It's walking distance from the Magnolia silos. We will be back!

Kara T.

Yelp
Over priced and bland for a plate lunch. Disappointed in the mac salad. The hours are also wonky.
google avatar

Nico R.

Yelp
My wife and I are originally from Cali, and have been missing Hawaiian food! If y'all haven't had Hawaiian bbq or have been missing it since another place (won't say their name but they know who they are) hasn't really lived up to the name! This is the place for you! We had the chicken katsu plate and the spam masubi! And oh man! The chicken was so juicy, and crispy with their macaroni salad and rice combo man! Words can not describe how delicious this place is! Service was amazing I'm sorry I forgot the person who rang us up, she had an amazing tribal sleeve, and she was very welcoming! and the person who brought our food he was very nice and courteous! Overall this place is amazing and at great spot! We'll be coming back for sure!!!
google avatar

Kate P.

Yelp
We love musubi and get it from L&L when we can. Service was fast. We do take out. Will always come and have L&L BBQ, it's always be of our favorites.

Michael K.

Yelp
Food is great. Has authentic hawaiian taste and it's based here in South Austin. I am very disappointed in the serving size. For a half katsu, half short rib plate the serving size is small for $18. I know food prices have gone up - but from someone who grew up on L&L, had it in the islands - this was disappointing. L&L South Austin do better - treat your customers better.
google avatar

Susan M.

Yelp
Yikes. I have frequented L&L in both Hawaii and California and I am saddened to say "this IS NOT it!!" First, we couldn't find the place because the sign was dark and it is a tiny storefront, very easy to miss. Several calls to locate them went straight to an English accented voicemail. ???!!!??? My Bbq Beef Musubi was just okay, not at all what I've had in the past. My Kahlua Pork plate was HORRIBLE. One bite in was a big "NO," so much so I was actually afraid of the macaroni salad (always my favorite). Chef Moi makes a mean, perfectly delicious and authentic plate lunch yet relies on L&L (and Ono Hawaiian) when they present themselves. I'm only a month here in Austin, Foodie Heaven, and am extremely saddened for this Foodie Nightmare Hell. (I gave 2 stars solely in honor of all my FABULOUS meals at the other L&Ls.)
google avatar

Sammy K.

Yelp
This place hits, plain and simple. While I am glad they opened their location 5 min from where I live, it's also very dangerous because even though I've only been here twice since they opened, I think about eating here far more often than that. The Loco Moco is spot on and the portions are very good. I've also had the Katsu Chicken, which is very tender and juicy, but perhaps a bit bland without the sauce. The food is so good I always end up smashing it before I have a chance to take a picture. Hawaiian comfort food at its finest! Strongly recommend you try!
google avatar

Bertha T.

Yelp
I ordered the sea food combo and all the food was fresh and hot10/10... It was my first time there young lady even recommend an item for me to try.. The establishment is very inviting and welcoming.
google avatar

Yelp
So happy to have a local L&L!! The staff is always so nice, food comes out promptly, and is always SOOOOOO delicious.

Yelp
You gotta be kidding me. Wait 45 minutes for this bullsh1t plate. Little peep squeak in the back on the grill lollygagging. Moving like molasses... Another customer who was waiting 35 minutes got fed up and finally asks for refund. I should've done the same. Girl behind the counter has a meltdown and starts crying over it. As soon as the dude with blonde hair and hat handed me the takeout, I knew I f0cked up by waiting patiently. Plates were light AF. Idk if this is B1den inflation or what... $20 a plate for this crap, embarassing. Look at the damn kalbi, barely any meat. Looks like someone ate the plate and put back in the scraps. WHAT THE HELL. Plus they had the nerve to tell me they were waiting for the ribs to cook. WTF, no more even meat to cook... Was hungry cuz I never ate lunch so just ate what was in the plate -- $20 for rice and Mac salad. Even the plate had teriyaki sauce splattered on outside that I had to wipe with a napkin, look like they gave the plates cracks before handing it to us. But idk it's like going to a steak house and ordering pork chops. Who the hell goes to a Hawaiian BBQ in Texas. I sent a picture to my friend and he said you at the wrong kind of bbq. He is right. Wish I could file a chargeback but I paid with cash. All these other reviews guarantee fake. Just look at my kalbi. Bra look at these pictures, non-sense. What's going on with this joint. Pilau. Fake Hawaiians

Yelp
Let's start by saying I've been to Hawaii multiple times and love the food. I also love food, good food all over Austin. This place is over hyped. If you like spam, they do have spam. I had the rib plate for $18, which was not worth it. The meat was very tough. The plate came with white rice and macaroni salad, both cheap sides. Not sure why the high price tag, probably because rent in Austin is soooo high for businesses. My food was served in a styrofoam to go container even though I ordered it "for here". I won't try this place again. There are too many good places to eat in town.
google avatar

Joshua G.

Yelp
The more time we spent at L&L, the worse our experience became. The place was empty around 6pm and even though there were 3 people in the kitchen, it took ~5 minutes for them to take our order at the counter. We were told it could take 15 minutes because they needed to cook some pork. That's fine. 50 minutes later, we still didn't have our food. When our food finally came out, two of the dishes were cold while the pork was steaming hot. The pork also had a long blonde hair in it. Lovely. Restaurants won't always bat a 1,000 but tonight was next level. It seems like the guys in the back aren't great at multi-tasking which lead to people getting ignored and orders being forgotten. Overall, the service was horrible but the food was really great. If I do eat here again, I'll do pickup so I can have a better experience.

Rudolpho M.

Yelp
Before my knee surgery I was already planning to eat Chicken Katsu because of the large portion a sauce that came with it when I recovered. I door dashed and that went well except the south Austin location didn't put the chicken Katsu sauce which living in Hawaii for awhile and grew up on this they always had the sauce that came with it. The manager said it was a new employee needs retraining or the manager needs to oversight the products sold. I am in recovery and can't walk and all I wanted was my L&L but seems to me they can't help me when I am disabled. Very sad and maybe need to rethink where else to go. Please check your order or pickup your self and always check.
