L&M Fine Foods - Review - Lincoln Square - Chicago - The Infatuation

"L&M in Lincoln Square is the type of corner store we all wish was our neighborhood corner store. And while we like their selection of artisanal chocolates and cured meats, the sandwiches are the main draw. Their breakfast sandwiches are fantastic, like sausage egg and cheese between fluffy biscuits or housemade english muffins loaded with porchetta and preserved lemon aioli. And for the lunch or dinner sandwich eaters, their roast beef with giardiniera and horseradish spread or Italian are always excellent. L&M has a few tables, but when the weather decides to cooperate, we like taking our handheld meal to Welles Park across the street." - John Ringor

Where to Eat Chicago’s Best Sandwiches | Eater Chicago

"L&M Fine Foods has a stellar deli counter in the back of this gourmet store, and there are plenty of challenging decisions presented by the menu. The porchetta, made in the store, is a standout, served with garlic aioli and capers. Get this one hot and take a minute to savor it all." - Naomi Waxman

Where to eat egg sandwiches for breakfast in Chicago | Eater Chicago

"Biscuit sandwiches are the name of the game at L&M Fine Foods, a bougie gourmet store and deli on the North Side. This specialty grocer has a truly unique stock of products, and the deli carries the same philosophy. Go to Subway or Jimmy John’s if you need a meal deal. The breakfast sandwiches come with bacon or sausage made on premises. Don’t want a biscuit? Bagels are also available." - Ashok Selvam

Amazing, amazing sandwich shop / deli / small market / pit stop for specialty goods. I ordered an egg salad sandwich and the Morty — yum! They let me add meat to the sandwich. There’s a cute little seating area and they serve wine / beer as well! They have a good happy hour during M-F - 2:30-5:30p. Staff are great and very friendly. Also the space is very safe and LGBQT+ friendly vibes all around.

We stumbled into L&M to escape a rainy day and grab a bite to eat and I’m so glad we did! I have truly dreamt about the Smoked Tofu sandwich since. I had such a hard time choosing from the sandwich options because they all looked so delicious! I can’t wait to come back and try more.

Google
My oh my, maybe I should be glad this wonderful eatery and store is not closer! Hands down one of the top 3 sandwiches I have ever had the pleasure to consume - the Porchetta is to die for! I highly recommend going there and having it warm though I am sure the cold version is fabulous as well! They have a lovely small al fresco area to enjoy your meal. They have other sandwiches I want to try but I may not be able to NOT have the Porchetta, so will need to go when I am very hungry! They serve a Peppers and Egg sandwich which has become hard to find anymore and some other delicious looking sandwiches. Breakfast, lunch or dinner - GO to this highly recommended location!

I’ve had a few sandwiches in my day, but the toasted turkey and Brie with hot giardiniera is hands down the best sandwich I have ever had

First time in today. Late lunch around 130pm. Small deli style counter service/market with minimal seating. Looked like nice higher quality (and higher price point) curated grocery items. Beer, wine, spirits. Ordered an Italian sandwich and was informed they were out. I asked if the reason for not offering the sandwich was due to a shortage of a component, but they did not know. They told me that the “basement told me we are out”. He offered another sandwich but not what I wanted so I tried another. Appreciate the recommendation though. Ordered the roast beef sandwich “to go” with hot giardinera. It was a pretty long wait for what seemed to be a steady crowd, but not overwhelmingly busy. There was no line when I ordered but there were a few people waiting around for their orders. Overall it was a good experience. Not great. Not bad. Staff was nice enough but missed an opportunity to please a customer and talk through options (if that’s even a possibility). Food was good, fresh, and made with care, but again, not what I went in for and a tad too long of a wait for something I didn’t really want, so I was a bit disappointed.

Google
I tried the 78 Special Breakfast sandwich and loved it!! The english muffin was incredibly soft, and the thai chili jam tied everything together, adding just the right amount of sweetness to balance the rich, cheesy, and savory flavors of the egg and hashbrown. I also had the hot chocolate and the london fog while the hot chocolate was amazing, the London Fog could use a bit more tea, but it was still delicious overall!!

There's an extra special space in my heart for places where the tastiness and quality not only live up to but surpass the words of those who have cheered them on. L&M Fine Foods is now easily in the running to be one of those spots. The warm Porchetta sandwich I had today is one of the best all-around sandwiches I've had in a long time. L&M has a kind of elevated deli/bodega feel with a nice variety of grocery items and a counter for ordering their prepared food items and sandwiches as well as standalone meats and cheeses. All of the employees seemed very friendly and knowledgeable and I appreciated the unstuffy vibe of the place. There are a few tables and counters for eating and there was plenty of seating available around 2pm on the Tuesday afternoon I stopped in but I could see them being more busy during more standard lunch or breakfast hours. I was initially a little saddened to see the thinner slices of meat on the sandwich but appreciated that there was still a decent overall serving. That sadness was quickly allayed when I took that first bite into their soft ciabatta though. Just wow; the wonderfully seasoned porchetta goes perfectly with the creamy and tangy roasted garlic aioli, fried capers, and arugula. It's a perfectly put together sandwich whose distinct parts hit all of the right notes when combined. L&M is now very high on my list for go-to lunch spots. The breakfast sandwiches sound really good too so I'm looking forward to stopping in again soon.

Google
Awesome corner spot fishing up perfect breakfast sandwiches. Have to try anything on the biscuit, it’s perfectly buttery but holds up as you eat. I love the 78 but swapping the biscuit for the English muffin. Also a great little specialty store with cool stuff, including a legit cheese section.

Yelp
High quality fresh ingredients. The sandwich was delicious. I only had 40 minutes to grab lunch and I didn't want fast food. You can eat there. It's clean, bright and airy. I would go there again and again!

Yelp
This small market has been in Lincoln Square for several years but I haven't yet made a stop here. I found out they have a cafe element so stopped by to get a couple breakfast sandwiches this weekend. The sandwiches were very good, and the bacon was cooked perfectly which is usually a hit or miss prospect. They have a selection of cheese and meats, as well as prepared foods, and fresh breads from Phlour bakery. I picked up a baguette for dinner and froze half of it. They carry higher end items and specialty foods as well as supermarket brands, which is a mix that I appreciate because I don't have to expect to only get the most expensive goods. They have some nice cheeses as well--they don't have a cheese counter so they're pre-portioned, but amongst them I saw drunken goat, and one of my favorites, mimolette! Service was friendly and quick. I was finished within 10-15 minutes total, and spent the time whilst they were making the sandwiches wandering around and seeing what they have. The place isn't super large but they have four tables plus a communal table with stools inside. The tables are really on top of one another due to the aforementioned size but if that's your thing, you do you. They also have some tables outside when the weather is nice. Parking is street only, but the Western Brown Line is just a few blocks away or the Lincoln Bus would be handy, too.

Yelp
The storied porchetta sandwich really is THAT good. Decadently oily bread, like a good focaccia (but not actually focaccia, I don't think - just oily because of the aioli that soaks into the bread instead of spurting out the sides), crispy-edged porchetta, salt bombs of fried capers. For me, the portions could use a little adjusting (more arugula, please, and maybe less meat, so it's not SUCH a grease bomb) but other than that it's perfect. The rest of the store is about what you'd expect for a high-end specialty butcher-centered shop in Lincoln Square. If you're looking for several varieties of kombucha, high-end pasta, or half-serving sized cheesy popcorn for $5, this is your place. Not somewhere I'd grocery shop, but if I'm already shelling out for a $14 sandwich, might as well complete it with another $14 worth of fancy drinks and sides.

Yelp
High end speciality foods with an amazing. This will be a new go to. The porchetta is an amazing sandwich. Cannot wait to have again.

Yelp
Great place to grab a hot sub and chips. Hey also cater to small local producers and have exclusive beers and foods. My family and I are hooked on hot subs. They are the best in the area and they have rewards on subs as well. Unique place to grab vegan, vegetarian and regular subs. Hey have a griddle and that's the winning combination to a great tasty sub. L & M have a bit for every nutritional walk. Great place for coffee and pastries. Ideally location caddy corner of Welles park, opened M-Sunday. Staff is always helpful and kind. Music in the background adds to a pleasant ambiance.
google avatar

Courtney C.

Yelp
I ordered the smoke tofu sandwich and the caprese to go. Both were delicious and I loved the creativity of the smoked tofu sub. Service was friendly and the space was cute and clean. I'll have to stop by for longer to do some shopping. Would recommend!

Yelp
Really good sandwich. I had a traditional Italian sandwich with the addition house made porchetta. Meats and toppings were fresh and authentic and the ciabatta rolls was great. Quick professional service. Can't wait to go back for more.
google avatar

Renee B.

Yelp
I have picked up sandwiches from here three times and every time it was absolutely delicious! These are the two sandwiches I recommend: The Porchetta Sandwich must be hot Think of it as Italian Bacon. I have had with and without cheese. I definitely think No cheese The Caprese sandwich is so yummy too if you prefer no meat. It's better than the grilled. Their sides of pasta salads and other cold sides are delicious too. Also, the serves is great! Everyone is very nice. One tip it gets very busy during lunch hours so call ahead to place your order.

Yelp
One my neighborhood favorites? Quality food great friendly service! Location is easy to get to.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a go to lunch spot for breakfast sandwiches, deli, cheese, and meat options, and hot sandwiches! They also carry a great selection of local beers, coffees, and small pantry items. There is some produce as well. The service is always very friendly and it is a great place to have in the neighborhood. my go to sandwich is the porchetta or a breakfast sandwich on a biscuit!
google avatar

Yelp
This rating is mostly based on the Porchetta Sandwich. Holy crap is it good! The first few times I came here, it was for beer and other odds and ends. They have a good selection of each, and some really nice brands of chips, hot sauces, and other packaged goods. I had always heard the deli was good, but was never hungry when I was stopping by. And then one day I made a point of getting lunch here. I got the Porchetta Sandwich and WOW is it good. It feels a little light when you hold it, making you believe you'll be left hungry and disappointed. Luckily this is not the case. Yes it's small, but each bite is so crispy and full of a delicious explosion of flavor that you want to eat it slowly. You want to savor every single bite. I probably look ridiculous eating my sandwich so slowly, inspecting every bite to try to understand how it's so wonderfully, addictingly garlicky. Yes, the sandwiches are expensive, but luckily they have a loyalty punch card, so that helps a little bit. Once again, if you haven't tried the Porchetta Sandwich yet, DO IT! You can thank me by marking this review as helpful for changing your lunch life.

Yelp
Lovely little corner store with the culinary skills to match. Been here a dozen times for ingredients for cooking our own Sunday dinners, but stopped in today for my first sandwich. The caprese sandwich is excellent, just a perfect meld of flavors, from the sweetness of the balsamic to the salty chewiness of the mozzarella. Each bite was an absolute delight. What surprise me even more was the kale side salad, an absolute steal at only $3.99. So much to love here, now I'll have to go back to try the rest of the premade menu. Hey, why not try some arancini?
google avatar

Kate M.

Yelp
YUM! A friend was kind enough to surprise me with a breakfast sandwich and she ordered it from L&M Fine Foods. Because it was delivered, I didn't get a chance to experience the interior of the store, but with how excellent the sandwich was, I definitely plan on visiting in person and checking out the other offerings! I tried the bacon egg and cheese sandwich on the biscuit and it was heavenly!!! The biscuit was buttery and fluffy and complimented the sandwich perfectly. The bacon was thick cut, which you don't always get with a breakfast sandwich. My friend also treated me to a La Colombe Vanilla Latte. I love these! La Colombe coffees are delicious, and this was no exception. Overall, I loved everything I got to try! Can't wait to visit the store is person and see what else is available.

Yelp
L&M has a great deli counter with a variety of hot/cold sandwich options - the roast beef sandwich never misses! Weekly rotating sandwich/soup specials are also a nice touch. There's a small but convenient indoor dining area with a couple tables, should you decide to eat in. The grocery section of the store has a solid mix of fresh and packaged foods, including items made in-house. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Definitely worth a stop in!
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful corner store with killer deli sandwiches. Great place to pick up a few items/treats. The beer selection causes me to overspend often. Love having this place in the neighborhood to pop-in.
google avatar

Meggie D.

Yelp
Seriously amazing sandwiches, great service and good selection of high end food!! Cute ambiance too and now they've added seating
google avatar

Joseph B.

Yelp
This place has some of the best sandwiches I've had in the city. While a bit on the pricey side, they make up for it with a free sandwich on your 10th visit. In addition they have numerous hard to find cooking items. My favorites on the menu are the Roast Beef and Bagel with Lox. Most importantly, the people are very nice. I just wish there were somewhere in the building to eat. However, there is a park across the street so this usually where I go to scarf down my purchase.
google avatar

Aimee M.

Yelp
L&M serves its purpose for me with serving fine sandwiches, fun snacks and unique sodas. I've only tried one sandwich and even though the menu looks amazing, I always circle back to the turkey brie, warmed from the grill. The garlic aioli ties it all together and slices of granny smith give it a nice crunch and tartness. So very good! I also get the quicos--the corn nuts. The sandwich, corn nuts and one of the unique flavorful sodas make a perect lunch. There's bakery items, ready made dips, craft beer, wine, ice cream--lots of staples for a gourmet pantry. Friendly service; great neighborhood shop.

Yelp
This store is at the corners of Lincoln and Montrose. It is diagonal from Welles Park. Often we head to the store before, during and after baseball games lol. Why? It's because it has everything you need for picnicking at the park or cooking a meal at home. They carry a variety of gourmet quality food items for the pantry and fresh, cured & deli meat selections along with a few produce items. Their deli prepares hot delicious sandwiches and they take catering orders too. It is easy to spend time deciding between many of their finest selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. They are open early with hot and cold brew Groundswell coffee with a good selection of delicious baked goodies from many local bakeries like pHlour and Defloured. It is alway a treat to visit L&M because I don't need to drive to many places. Check out my delicious lox sandwich and menu pictures.

Yelp
Great shop for picking up provisions for the Horseshoe pits. Great deli sandwiches and many other delicious things to buy.
google avatar

Jeff L.

Yelp
Excellent. Got the Rueben with Pastrami and Turkey sandwich. Both were excellent. Bread was extremely fresh, ingredients were delicious. Tomato bisque was creamy and flavorful. Skip the pasta salad, it's just ok. Biscuit was flakey, soft and buttery. So good. Love this place

Meghan C.

Yelp
Delicious! We called ahead for a whole muffuletta. It was ready when we got there, within 15 min. The bread wasn't too dry and the olive Tempenade was tasty. The sandwich could have use a few more slices of meat but I'd go back for it! L&M also smells good- like tasty food! And, It has a nice selection of groceries and a cold section with craft beers. I look forward to going back and trying more things!

Ryan H.

Yelp
Here's my issue with L&M: What you're getting for the price is absurd. It's just the gimmick of a high quality market with organic foods that sucks you in. I would expect more, and should considering the other options in the neighborhood, from a $12.99 sandwich.
google avatar

Anamaria H.

Yelp
My friend and I had a picnic in Welles Park and she brought the magical Porchetta sandwiches for us to eat. She said they came from this store near the park that has a deli. I have eaten a lot of sandwiches in my life but this one was something else. Might just be the best sandwich. Housemade porchetta (pork), roasted garlic aioli, fried capers, and arugula. Every bite was amazing. Perfection. A week later I rode my bike back up to Lincoln Square to have it again (I live in Logan Square but I needed this sandwich). And it was just as magical. But here's the kicker - I ended up not being able to eat it for a while due to a series of events that delayed my return home to eat my sandwich. Guess what - it was still magical an hour after I ordered, slightly cold. MAGICAL I tell you. I feel sorry for the rest of the menu. It looks delicious but I have no interest in the other sandwiches because the porchetta sandwich exists. If you live near here and eat pork, please order the porchetta sandwich. Just writing this review is making me regret being responsible this week and actually buying groceries. (Rest of the store is cute and they have a decent liquor and beer selection.)
google avatar

Mark N.

Yelp
I ordered 2 quiches (loraine and spinach) . They were both excellent. I also ordered a fruit tray which was so beautifully plated I decided to put it out as it came. My order was ready on time and even carried out to my car. I will definitely order again !!! Another time we got short ribs from the butcher section and they were superb quality!!! it's a great source for so many things and the staff are super friendly!!!
google avatar

Jen R.

Yelp
Great neighborhood store. Wonderful selection of gourmet foods, like Bang Bang Pie frozen pies and Pretty Cool ice cream bars. Love the meat selection, especially their skirt steak. Friendly staff. The only hesitation is with their sandwiches because it's always a long wait and they sometimes get my order wrong.
google avatar

Allen M.

Yelp
I love having this place around the corner. A surprisingly good selection for a small space, and the sandwiches are fantastic. Staff is always friendly too.
google avatar

Mattison A.

Yelp
We love having a locally sourced grocery store nearby. They have everything you would want - cheeses & a deli counter, coffee & a grinder, beer & wine, plenty of dry goods, and limited but high quality produce. I especially like that they always have a ton of different delicious mushroom varieties. The owner & staff are extremely nice. Come a few times and they'll start to recognize you.
google avatar

Brad B.

Yelp
We highly recommend shopping here, take a look at their offerings! I feel lucky to have them in the neighborhood!

Bill H.

Yelp
Sandwiches are fire! Good alcohol selection too. Can't say much about their grocery selection.
google avatar

Chester M.

Yelp
I really love the selection here. They bring in local goods like Bang Bang Pie, Phlour bakery, and Pretty Cool Ice Cream bars. Their booze selection is awesome too. I like their homemade butter, frozen lasagna, and pasta sauce. The jarred honey butter is the best. I love that they carry Oatly and Jeni's ice cream. The Justin's crunchy PB cups are delicious. I appreciate that they have an appreciation for natural ingredients and tend to carry organic products. I have to take away two stars because of the high prices. I understand that high end products are more expensive but I see the exact same items at Whole Foods and Jewel for dollars less. Just now I saw the Iowa eggs they sell for $4.99 at Kitchfix, yet they charge $6.99 at L&M. Same for their Mick Klug apple cider half gallon which is amazingly delicious. But they charge $8 and Mick Klug charges $6. So they go well above the standard retail price. I've seen this happen on many of their products. Also, anything you order from the deli counter will take a very long time (even pre-made salads, but sandwiches prepare to wait 20 min) and will likely be overly salty. Like the kale salad, polenta squares, potato cakes, or their rosemary bacon. If they could address these issues or explain why this happens, it would help me to understand and possibly change my rating.
google avatar

Jane P.

Yelp
The corner store of my dreams. Everything is just a little nicer than usual and there are always new finds and amazing things. I always walk out with more than I came for but stoked about it. Try the pickled veggies!!
google avatar

Double L.

Yelp
Good sandwich, online order process was simple. Prices are reasonable.
google avatar

LaVie L.

Yelp
Lovely little grocery featuring a small but great selection of fine groceries, meat, cheeses, wine etc. They also have a nice looking selection of sandwiches that are prepared on site. Everyone was super helpful, and kind. Definitely a nice addition to the Lincoln Square area!
google avatar

Dave M.

Yelp
It's basically a hipster corner store so there probably aren't many brands you will recognize and the prices are higher. What got me in the door was their deli menu. I have tried their egg salad sandwich and the roast beef. Both are good but the egg salad could do with more eggy-ness to it. During one of my visits the employee processing my purchase threw in a free biscuit. They mentioned that they make them on site and use them for their breakfast sandwiches. The biscuit was terrific, got me to go back another time and try those. That was the right decision. They have one of the best if not the best breakfast sandwich on a biscuit. Both the bacon and sausage are spectacular, and they also make the sausage. I've fed several friends with their breakfast sandwiches and everyone agrees. Their breakfast sandwich is a savory delight that I highly recommend. If I was rating just the sandwiches it would be a 5 star review.
google avatar

Denise U.

Yelp
So L & M (o, p) you have some finer foods. We ran to get sandwiches here since you are, in fact, closer than graziano's. The porcetta and Italian sub we're pretty good, and stuff. I appreciate getting food from a smaller guy, vs. a larger guy ( like potbelly), although I shan't turn away from ordering from there too, when the need arises. So , yep
google avatar

Laura S.

Yelp
The best meat in the city!! I roasted a pork shoulder from them and it was stunningly delicious: succulent, tender, extraordinary taste! They also have a well-chosen selection of produce, deli offerings, dairy and other goods. They are incredibly friendly and will do curb delivery.
google avatar

Sean H.

Yelp
Great small but surprisingly well stocked store. They had everything I needed, even King Arthur bread flour! Great service, and quality of products offered. Go spend money there, keep small businesses in business!

Ch P.

Yelp
I won't be shopping there anymore. They've let their delivery trucks take over the bus stop on the Montrose side of the building.
google avatar

K S.

Yelp
Stopped by last week to grab a quick bite for lunch. Very impressed with the staff and quality of food. This is a great addition to the neighborhood , I am so happy that someone finally filled this large empty space after J. Meinl coffee shop left. I look forward to trying more of the menu items.
google avatar

Kate S.

Yelp
I am obsessed with this place. They have the best sandwich I've ever had- turkey & Brie! The employees are extremely nice and it makes it a delight to shop at their store.

James H.

Yelp
What a gem. They've got all you need if you have good taste and deep pockets. If you have bad taste and deep pockets, buy a lot here and learn something. If you have good taste but not deep pockets, come here when it's time to treat yourself. If you have bad taste and not deep pockets, go to Jewel.
google avatar

Amanda S.

Yelp
Fantastic sandwiches and a very kind, and helpful staff. Great addition to the neighborhood.

Jaime M.

Yelp
They are amazing and they serve the best sandwich I've had in Chicago (Fried Mortadella) and that's saying a lot in this city of amazing sandwiches. The pricing is great and you get a ton of prime ingredients for only $9.99. The groceries they carry all seem to be very high quality (with many imported from Spain), but the sandwiches wow!

Gabrielle S.

Yelp
This friendly neighborhood shop is such a delight! They really helped us out with our virtual baby shower this weekend. My husband and I wanted some finger food/snacks during our baby shower but didn't need too much food since it would be just the two of us. They really came through and provided us some incredibly delicious snacks such as delicious cheese, pickled veggies, caprese, and prucuto. Everything was delicious, they were incredibly nice, and very communicative and helpful on such short notice. Thanks L&M!

Rada A.

Yelp
at first blush, your typical bourgie overpriced grocery, which is fine, but then two things made me never want to go back, and take the time to write this review: 1. They are not practicing the coronavirus requirements, it felt very unsafe and exposed. 2. I called ahead with my order and they did not have my order ready - they had not even started making it! Thankfully, they did bring it outside so that I didn't have to wait in their exposure mess while they took their time getting the order ready.

Lauren C.

Yelp
Cute shop with everything I really need from a local grocery. The deli and cheese selections are great! And the little butcher counter stocks super fresh, high quality cuts. We love their take away sandwiches...especially the porchetta and muffaletta. Grab one to go and walk around the park across the street!

Laura M.

Yelp
I have been anticipating the opening of L&M for quite some time - such a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. Stopped in to try the bacon, egg and biscuit sandwich this morning - it was phenomenal. I also custom ordered a whole quiche last week. The staff was super helpful, friendly and they were able to accommodate my request within a few hours. So happy to have this gem right around the corner.

Yelp
L&M has a great variety of specialty food items, fresh produce, fresh bread, pastries, and cheeses. I have had a few of the sandwiches and pastries and they were delicious! The staff is really friendly and happy to answer questions about any of the offerings. It's a really nice shop.
