Where to Find Terrific Thai Food in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"If you’re a newbie to Thai cuisine and you’re not sure how much heat you can handle, Lanna Thai in Pacific Beach may be a perfect place to get an introduction. The curries are trustworthy with a complex depth of flavor that makes Thai food so addictive. The don’t-miss dish is dessert. Sticky rice comes topped with a crunchy combination of toasted yellow rice and black sesame seeds with perfectly ripe, almost custard-like mango." - Helen I. Hwang

We had a wonderful dinner at Lanna and truly enjoyed every bite. We started with crispy spring rolls as an appetizer—perfectly crunchy and flavorful. For the main course, we ordered Thai Fried Rice and Pad Kee Mao, paired with orange juice. Thai food never disappoints, and this meal was no exception. We asked for it to be spicy, and the flavors were bold, authentic, and absolutely delicious. The service was excellent, and the prices were very reasonable for the quality and portion sizes. Definitely a place worth visiting again! 🌶️🍜☕

Google
It's a small place but has a nice atmosphere and wasn't loud. They have a few 1/2 booth tables but no actual booths, mostly small tables. Service is on the slow side, brisk but not rude. The food was good - the chicken curry cups are fun and different and we enjoyed the yellow chicken curry.

There Thai cuisine is on another level!!! It’s always been one of my favorites, but my husband isn’t usually a big Thai food guy—so this was a win. He had steak & shrimp, fried rice, and he absolutely loved it. And the wild caught citrus Sea Bass on cabbage was perfect! This experience gave me a whole new appreciation for Thai food with my husband, forget the steak restaurants we are coming back for more Thai!

Google
Great food and attentive service. Liked pretty much everything we ordered but the highlight was the pad see ew, tom yum soup and the yellow curry

Google
The food taste good, everyone’s friendly, clean including the restroom. We found a new favorite Thai restaurant in San Diego Pacific Beach area.

Good size portions. Great presentation on the plates and food was delicious. And the sticky rice with Mango is to die for!!

Google
Food taste great I’ve been here twice when I visit and the plates are full of food and great service! It is a nice and cozy place for lunch or dinner!

Google
This restaurant is well decorated. I had the eggplant fried beef. It was delicious. And they served pretty fast. It is a quiet place to talk.

Yelp
Wow! I was thoroughly surprised by how wonderful the Pad Thai was. Lunch special for dine in included a really flavorful soup. The spring roll is the perfect amount of crunch. The pad thai has so much flavor! The Jasmine tea was super nice with the last few days of cold and rain. Service and ambiance are par for the course but honestly. Waiter was friendly and the place is clean with not too many frills or decorations.

Yelp
We were trying to go to the In-N-Out around the corner, but it was too busy. While looking for a restaurant nearby, we stumbled across this gem. It looks like a little hole in the wall from the outside, but when we walked in, we could tell it was legit. As we were seated, more and more people came in so we knew it was pretty popular. We got Thai coffee, Thai tea, pad see ew, pad Thai and green curry. They go by a 10 star spice system which we were not used to so we didn't know how spicy to order. Our food definitely could have been spicer. The favor was there for all our food. It looked like a lot but it was so good that we ate it all! My husband said this is one of his favorite places for Thai. I couldn't drink all my Thai tea so they have me a Togo cup. I really appreciated it while we drive to Anaheim.

Yelp
We order from here frequently and are never disappointed with the quality of food. The tofu curry and option to make it vegan are a real bonus! My husband generally orders the cashew chicken and then we share the tofu spring rolls. My son loves the spring rolls with peanut sauce. They always get our order correct and the delivery or pick up is prompt. We can't speak for the ambiance as we've only ever ordered but it looks cute inside and we'd love to try dining in sometime.

Yelp
One of my favorite Thai restaurants! Food is always good and consistent, service was fast! There's so much in the menu to choose from and everything is delicious! My favorite is their Andaman sea! Restaurant is pretty, clean and it's very close to my place, so that makes it very convenient for me.

Yelp
Pad Thai 4/5 This place is super aesthetically pleasing, overall the workers were nice! I found this place on a whim and the spicy was 1-10, 1-5 is more mild and 6-10 is the actual spiciness.
google avatar

Yelp
I am a Thai FAN! This is a very good spot. I got there right before rush. The two items i got were really good. I have to go back and try more before i can give it a 5. Serves was good, the peanut sauce was good, the yellow curry was also very good. The servers were also respectful and were always there when i needed them. I will go back here.

Yelp
I was craving pad thai and was nearby so I decided to stop by Lanna. I actually got their daily special which was a softshell crab pad thai with glass noodle. It was really delicious and the portion was more than enough. I ended up taking home some leftovers. When I walked in I noticed there was a sign that said they were short-staffed so to be patient. Even when I got seated the host told me it might take a while. However, my experience was the complete opposite. I ordered and received my meal super fast. I was very pleased with the service here. There is nothing bad to write about! The parking lot is not the greatest but there is street parking down in the neighborhood which wasn't too bad.

Yelp
I hadn't planned on dining out that evening--my stop was meant for the 7-11 next door. But as I parked, the fragrance drifting from the Thai restaurant beside me was impossible to ignore. Lemongrass, coconut, and spices beckoned me through its glass doors. Inside, the air was alive with the hum of diners and the aroma of simmering curries and wok-tossed dishes. I ordered an appetizer, a curry, and a few other plates to take home. Each dish carried the same allure as that first scent: the curry lush and layered, the appetizer crisp and full of flavor. Even after cooling, the flavors held their vibrancy--proof of the balance and depth that make Thai cuisine so unforgettable. What began as a simple detour became an unexpected culinary delight.

Lauren T.

Yelp
I ordered the Lad Na and the Chicken Thai Basil--both dishes were hot, fresh, and full of flavor! I went with spice level 4, and it delivered just the right amount of heat--definitely authentic Thai spicy. The chicken was juicy, tender white meat and tasted super fresh.

Yelp
This place is a wonderful value for Thai food in the San Diego area. We ordered the Spring rolls, a yellow curry, and Pad Thai and everything was spot on-from both a freshness and flavor profile. The staff were very friendly as well. Good choice for a night out.
google avatar

Brenda D.

Yelp
My first time dining here and overall it was an okay experience. We ate here during the week and I understand it was a little bit busy, but we had to constantly be calling for basic things like napkins or more water. We ordered the papaya salad and it was probably my favorite dish. The egg rolls were cooked to perfection and had a good flavor. The golden triangle appetizer was picture worthy, but I was surprisingly unimpressed by the taste of it. The curry was also pretty bland. So yeah, the main entrees were just alright.
google avatar

James S.

Yelp
Just down the road from the hotel I was in, great find! Lunch special was $15 for soup, spring roll, salad and entree. I had the basil chicken fried rice and johan had the chili chicken stir fry. Ordered both spice level 5/10 but to be honest tasted like 2/10 spice level. Server was nice, checked on us after meal was delivered & offered drink refills. There were several other tables and place was busy for carry out. Good temperature and decor was authentic Thai.
google avatar

Kia S.

Yelp
I was greeted quickly with a warm smile. The room was filled half way with late lunch crowd. Visually the food did not disappoint. Something is missing. I wish I could put my finger on it but sadly my report is that the food here is bland. Even the air was tasteless. There were no traces of spices or smells from dishes lingering in the air. My nose had nothing to tell my mouth to taste. I wanted to like it, I promise. The reviews are so great. Maybe they had an off day.
google avatar

Laurel G.

Yelp
The flavors are fantastic. We had the Pad Thai with chicken, Basil Fried Rice with angus beef and a cup of Tom Kha Gai. My only complaint was that the vegetables in the fried rice and in the tom kha were cut huge. Particularly the mushrooms and bell peppers were so big they were tough to maneuver. Our takeout order included mango sticky rice which I've now learned is best in restaurant. Once it cools off it's not as delicious. The restaurant has low lighting and large stone murals. It's beautiful and romantic. I recommend dining in over takeout but it's delicious food either way.

Yelp
Love this spot!!! I live in OC and will drive down to get my favorite dishes since I can't find a place locally that compares. Service is always top notch. Highly recommend!

Yelp
While I only tried a handful of appetizers from this place, I can tell it's definitely one of the better Thai restaurants in San Diego. My friend and I split the Herb Mussels, Curry Cup and the Mango Shrimp Roll. The Mussels were pretty good and I would get them again. I really liked the lime garlic sauce it came with and I used it on the curry cups, which were soo flavorful and had a nice crispy shell! This was both my friend's and my favorite dish that we tried. My friend didn't like the mango shrimp roll at all (I don't like mango or cream cheese so I didn't try it). He said there was way too much cream cheese and that was all he could taste. I would honestly love to come back here and try their actual dinner menu to see how it compares to their appetizers.

Yelp
Food was good, but it seemed to lack flavor. The Pad Thai had a bit of an after taste, the Tom Kha soup was OK, but was barely warm, the Red Curry was very watery. We had 2 servers. The lady seemed annoyed and uninterested, the gentleman was more attentive and provided good service. I'll most likely not be returning, but I'd say give it a try. My guest, on the other hand, enjoyed the food and thought it was good. You might have a better experience.

Yelp
Great food and good quantity for the price! We had vegetarian food and it was amazing. Will definitely go next time.

Yelp
It is absolutely delicious every single time. One my all time favorite spots in SD. Been going for years and still go at least once a month!!!

Yelp
We got the tom kha soup and it was 12/10 !! Yellow curry was great and so was pad thai. Excited to try different stuff next time but will for sure get soup every time.

Yelp
Decent Thai restaurant in Pacific Beach, close to the Fairfield hotel where I was staying earlier this week. Stopped by with a work colleague for dinner - we ordered fresh salad rolls ($10), green curry with organic tofu ($16), pad see ew with organic tofu ($16), brown rice ($1 extra) and jasmine rice ($3). My colleague likes her Thai food spicy so ordered it level 8 out of 10. The food arrived quickly. The salad spring rolls with peanut sauce were my favorite - fresh, tangy and delicious! The curry and noodles were a tad too spicy for me to enjoy thoroughly. The decor was interesting, and the service warm and friendly. I was stuffed so didn't order dessert, otherwise I can never say no to sticky rice with mangoes!
google avatar

Jaime Y.

Yelp
I really do not normally write review while sitting at the table. We my family and I arrived and asked for a table we were told there would be a 15-20 minute wait for a table for 3. Funny thing is there was one right where we could see open and ready. After watching several groups being sat when they came in after us for 30 minutes, we were finally sat in that same table. 20 minutes of sitting someone finally took our order.the thing is we order food to good the night beforehand and the food was great, we believe the food will be so again but man oh man am I am disappointed in the service. It is a shame we a place can have such good food but really fails at the care and respect that it should show to its customers. As the pictures show, the food was really good. I can only hope that the service flaws was just a bad night.
google avatar

Resley S.

Yelp
The food was soo good. We had the satay, fresh rolls, pad see ew and mango sticky rice for dessert. Yum! Would love to come back again when I'm in SD. Service were great as well.

Yelp
I recently visited a local Thai restaurant and was pleasantly surprised by the authentic flavors and warm atmosphere. Tom Kha was amazing.

Yelp
When u are in the midst of the best mexican food but u crave for some variety and dont feel like going out, one searches yelp and gets food delivered. I am so glad yelpers helped me to choose this thai place when i was away from home and i loved it. In $92, we got: - pad thai chicken 4/5 - spice 5/10- yummy and saucy with lots of protein - pad thai chicken and shrimp - 5/5 - spicy 8/10 loved it and wow such high quality protein so definitely worth the slightly extra price. Go for it!! - red curry with chicken - 5/5- spice 6/10- loved the flavorful curry with lots of veggies and chicken. It comes with white rice. - veggie spring rolls 4/5- 4 pcs - regular and good but nothing to rave about - mango and sticky rice dessert 5/5- loved the huge portion size to share and fresh mango!! #supportlocal The spice levels are spot on and 5/10 is regular medium spicy.

Yelp
I decided to try Lanna Thai based on proximity and the reviews. I totally agree with all the other good reviews - there is quite a selection of dishes here and it was hard for me to decide. Ultimately I ended up ordering the golden triangle appetizer which was unlike anything I've had, with a layer of chicken sandwiched between crispy golden layers and a flavorful dipping sauce. As for the noodles ordered, I don't remember the actual name but it was similar to drunken noodles and probably some of the best Thai noodles I've had in San Diego. I can also say that the food came out very quickly and the wait staff made sure to refill our waters and close us out in a very timely manner. While the parking lot isn't large and it seems like it could be a little hard to access depending on traffic, this is a great place and I look forward to returning.

Yelp
This was a great Thai restaurant outside of PB. The food was authentic, flavorful, and obviously high quality. Very reasonably priced as well. The service was on point (never had an empty water glass) and the ambiance was cozy on a Sunday evening in January. I don't live in San Diego, but I would recommend it to anyone traveling there.
google avatar

George E.

Yelp
In San Diego for a quick trip and we were staying in the Pacific Beach area. Most of the time while in San Diego, we are closer to downtown so a change in scenery was a nice treat. We decided to find a quick stop for dinner in PB and Thai sounded good. We ordered take out food from Lanna Thai cuisine. On line the pad thai and massaman curry looked good and had favorable reviews. The food arrived hot and we were hungry. The chicken pad thai was spicy and not dry. The massaman curry with chicken was another story. We love the rich coconut milk flavor of the thai curries. The potatoes and carrots were cooked well but the curry was like water. There was no depth of flavor and a very runny sauce. Overall, the food was decent but I expected more, especially with the massaman. I had higher expectations and don't feel I will return.

Yelp
I usually brave this shitshow of a tiny parking lot ONLY for Sushi Ota, but Lanna Thai has proven that it is worth doing it for. This place has been here for a long time, but I am glad I finally had the opportunity to try it out. We came on a weekday night maybe a week before Christmas and it was packed (probably because people were already on holiday vacation), so we waited around 15-20 minutes to be seated. We ordered a bowl of Tom Yum soup with shrimp, stir fry with shrimp, Thai basil, and asparagus (forgot what it was called, one of their specials), and Pad Thai with mock duck. I noticed that the prices were higher than your average Thai place, but the quality and portion of the food make it justifiable. The Tom Yum was flavorful and filled with veggies and giant shrimp, and the shrimp stir fry had a great wok hei char to it, and not a single piece of meat/veggie was overcooked. Our Pad Thai was so large that we were only able to finish half of it. The mock duck was well-marinated and tender; If other places were making a mock duck Pad Thai half as good as Lanna's, I would never order meat in my Pad Thai again.

Yelp
I don't know how we got so lucky but this place was right across the street from our hotel. It is in a small shopping center next to a 7-11 and a sushi spot that is apparently also popping. The food was delicious, and much needed after a disappointing #47 taco spot in the country. The service was top-notch. The food, phenomenal. I don't venture out and try new things but blame it on the ocean air, I went with a NEW dish. I am not typically a veggie guy , but loved my dish. (Spinach, carrots, broccoli covered in spicy peanut sauce) The Pra-Ram! My wife went with with chicken pad thai. Also good, but for once in our life, we both liked MY dish better. It is usually the other way around. Whaow, mind blown! Sticky rice was excellent, it was slightly different than others I have had in the past with small little grains of puffed crunchy rice kernels on top. I do wish that the rice is a little more cooled off as it was difficult to eat with a fork without it falling all over the place. Definitely check out this spot for a great , and affordable lunch or dinner.
google avatar

Amber Y.

Yelp
Would have been 5 star but the restaurant allowed a family to have their kid glued to an iPad at a very high volume. The noise was detracting from the ambience. I feel it is the restaurant's responsibility to manage these things. Food was fresh and delicious. Service was prompt. It's a small restaurant with a steady amount of take out. Would recommend a reservation if dining in.
google avatar

Debbie B.

Yelp
We have been here twice before and we're not overly impressed. We decided to try it one more time and we each had a curry dish....now we're hooked! I guess we were ordering the wrong items previously but I'd go back anytime for curry. They do have beer and wine and I believe other cocktails as well. The ambiance is neutral and somewhat boring. The tables are extremely close together so little privacy. But if you're just going for dinner it's fine. The service is overall good but they always seem to be slightly understaffed. Staff is friendly but busy so limited interaction.

Mj J.

Yelp
Lanna Thai used to be good. Not sure what happened? New cook? Food is inconsistent. This last to go order was bland and tasteless even though I ordered spicy #7. Unfortunately this has happened one to many times. Time to try another place.
google avatar

Tatiane C.

Yelp
The food is so good but the star of the show is the mango stick rice for sure!! The service is friendly and restroom very clean even in a busy dinner time.
google avatar

Ronald M.

Yelp
Lanna Thai Cuisine has one of the friendliest staffs you'll find anywhere. We arrived just before 8:30 for an order of takeout. Our choices were the 1. Pad Thai with organic tofu. 2. Chicken Supreme; grilled marinated chicken breast, spinach, broccoli, & carrot topped with mild curried peanut sauce. 3. Brown rice. 4. Vegetable Thai tempura. Along with two Thai teas. With about a 20 minute wait. Arriving back to our room, we pretty much enjoyed everything. Very fresh. The tempura was pretty average though, but overall a very enjoyable meal.

Yelp
We were just passing by this place and decided to eat Thai and we were surprised of how good this place was... service was amazing, very luxurious ambiance but the food was amazing! The taste , the plating, the freshness and texture of every bite impressed .... They definitely have an amazing chef !!! Thank you Lanna Thai cuisine !!!!

Yelp
Whenever we see family in San Diego we go here with them. Food is delicious. I love surf and turf and the tropical duck. We also really like the salmon dishes and the pad Thai. The service was really good. It took about 15 minutes for the food to come out. Waiters and waitresses were nice and friendly. Would definitely come again and I recommend this place if you are in the area!

Yelp
My family and I visited San Diego to celebrate a few birthdays for July. 2 weeks prior to our arrival, I planned to order food for our little party. Jay (front desk lady) was very helpful when placing my order. She offered her own personal recommendations and answered all my questions. The service they provided from the time I ordered until I picked was amazing. Food was delicious and full of color. I would definitely order again or dine in next time. Thank you Lanna Thai for the providing such good food to share with my family -- they all loved it.

Yelp
Everything was delicious, especially the Thai spicy eggplant, green papaya salad with shrimp & LUNNA combo.

Yelp
Perfect for a casual, Sunday night dinner. Great ambiance and outstanding service. The waitress kept checking in on us & even noticed a dirty cup and took it away for us. We were looking for authentic Thai food & we got exactly that. We even have enough for leftovers for lunch tomorrow after splitting two entrees and appetizer. The yellow curry was special. Spice level 4 was perfect and mildly spicy. The drunken noodles were pretty good- I can say I have have had better before, but it definitely got the job done. The crispy spring rolls had the perfect crunch & the chili sauce was unreal. I was literally drinking it haha
google avatar

Yelp
Had an amazing meal at Lanna Thai Cuisine last night! We were starving and in need of some food close by and found this spot with no wait after booking a reservation through Yelp. Our waitress was very attentive throughout our meal and the service was quick and very efficient. We ordered the lettuce wraps, green curry spice with chicken level 4, and pad thai with chicken spice level 5. Everything came out very quickly and it was well paced between the appetizer and the meal. The lettuce wraps had a great flavor - the meat was rich, not spicy and the lettuce was very crispy which made for a great combination. The pad thai and curry also had great flavor. The spice level was what was to be expected, but the spice level for the green curry was greater than the pad thai, even though we ordered a lower spice level there. Other than that, the flavor was delicious, and it has become our favorite thai restaurant in the area. Cannot wait to come back and try more dishes!
google avatar

Yelp
Delish! We got the cream cheese wontons (amazing!!), salad spring rolls, and chicken pad thai. All really good but the wontons were my fav.

I R.

Yelp
First time ordering takeout at Lanna Thai and will definitely be back! I ordered the Lanna's platter and cream cheese wontons. It was all delicious! Food was hot, fresh and on-time. I found it to great value for the price!

Yelp
After a long day at work decided to try out the Thai food by our hotel. Cute little spot. Food and drinks are realllllly good. Perfect spice with every dish. Mango wasn't too sweet tho but the rice was very tasty. Would def recommend and can't wait to try other dishes...

Yelp
Service was great and the food was even better. The staff was busy and seemed to be short handed. The place was full (dinner time) and the staff worked their ass' off. Appreciate it and I highly recommend Lana Thai Cuisine.
google avatar

Kaloana G.

Yelp
I came here 2 weeks ago and had such a great Togo meal. I ordered the exact same thing today, and it was really bad the rice was complete mush, the Tom yum was so sour and everything had no flavor this time around. I just moved here and I thought I found my Thai spot, but I guess the search continues. Maybe I'll give it another shot one day. Hopefully, it was just a bad day

Yelp
This place has amazing food options, pretty presentation, and good customer service. The vibe is amazing as well with a lot of Thai decorations.

Yelp
If you're big on Thai food and/or looking for a new place in the Pb area, look no further. This place is a hidden gem tucked secretly between planned parenthood sushi ota. Be sure you pay close attention when trying to find it. The front parking lot isn't huge but there's additional parking in the back and on the street, if needed. My mom and I arrived early on a Sunday afternoon - had less than a 10 minutes wait before being greeted and seated by the waitress. We started off with a nice bottle of wine and the Thai tempura appetizer. For our entree we chose the Chu Chee fish and Panang Curry with beef. Portion sizes were large enough for left overs and came out quickly, nice and hot. The only downside was the calamari tempura was tough making it uncomfortable to eat. Overall, our experience was great and I look forward to bringing my husband and trying new menu items.

Yelp
Food is incredible. The pineapple fried rice and curry cups are my favorite but everything is amazing. The service was great, Jay was so kind, attentive, funny and overall wonderful. The young man helping us was also very great.
