I was heading to Ktown one evening and wanted to try out Lasung Tofu! Unfortunately, while I was excited about their collaboration with Rok Matcha, I was disappointed to hear that Rok had closed early by the time we arrived for dinner.
RESERVATION & PARKING: I made a dinner reservation for 4 on Resy for New Year's Eve. We were running late due to heavy traffic and pouring rain, but the server was incredibly accommodating and we were seated smoothly without issue. Street parking can be quite hard to find in Ktown but luckily, there's a parking garage in the back with reasonably priced $3 valet parking.
ITEMS TRIED:
+ Seafood Tofu Stew (Soondubu)
+ Kimchi Seafood Pancake
The seafood soondubu was the heavy hitter of the night! The broth alone stood out for how rich and flavorful it was. The rest, I was simply impressed by the quality and portion size of ingredients used. As a seafood lover, I was delighted by the juicy, plump shrimp, scallops, and mussels. Their tofu has such a smooth texture and comes in bigger portion sizes compared to other classic soondubu spots like BCD.
The kimchi seafood pancake was another winner; I loved the crunch of the seafood (shrimp, squid) intermixed with the crispy fried batter. The kimchi added a bit of spice that deepened the overall flavor.
However, what I think Lasung Tofu can improve on is its banchan. The sides I had that evening included salad, kimchi, stir-fried fish cake, pickled cucumbers, and potato salad. However, nothing really stood out compared to other Korean restaurants and I personally felt the flavor of each side dish was on the mild/blander side. I've read reviews mentioning they used to include a whole fried croaker fish, and I really think they should bring that back in order to add more variety and distinct flavor to what they can offer!
SERVICE: Top notch service. Waiters and staff are friendly, attentive, and accommodating, which was especially appreciated given our late arrival on a busy holiday evening. Of note, I thought the bathrooms needed more attention that day and weren't the cleanest.
AMBIENCE: Elevated, modern aesthetic with touches of traditional Korean decor. There is traditional booth seating and separate rooms in the back for large group dining.
OVERALL: Visit Lasung Tofu and Pot Rice for an elevated, upscale version of BCD. The portions are generous for the price, and the quality of ingredients is excellent. You will leave wanting to try more! Highly recommend checking it out if you're in Ktown!
