Latin Bites - Review - West Oaks - Houston - The Infatuation

"Latin Bites is pretty understated. Aside from an intricate hummingbird mural, the Peruvian spot has a handful of wooden tables and a few plants hanging from the ceiling. Any enthusiasm comes from the high-energy servers singing and tapping rhythms on a wooden box for the occasional birthday. But when it comes to food, the excitement varies for each visit. On its best days, Latin Bites makes excellent dishes. Classics like the tender lomo saltado, which is soft enough to fall apart on its own, come bathed in a sweet soy-based marinade. But on other days, the West Oaks cafe falls victim to inconsistency. Beef skewers arrive at the table as chewy strips, and at times, acidic citrus overpowers the ceviche, making the fish an afterthought. The best time to bet on Latin Bites is during Happy Hour when the discounted prices make the food feel like less of a risk. photo credit: Quit Nguyen photo credit: Quit Nguyen photo credit: Quit Nguyen photo credit: Quit Nguyen Food Rundown photo credit: Quit Nguyen Tequeños If a mozzarella stick swapped its breading for a flaky pastry shell, it would look like a tequeño. The golden crust of this appetizer, paired with the aioli sauce, makes it a reliable way to start your meal. photo credit: Quit Nguyen Beef Tenderloin Anticuchos Even as the most flavorful anticucho on the menu, the meat in this appetizer can occasionally be tough. But take a gamble because when done right, the beef practically glides off the skewer into a plate of crunchy choclo pieces. photo credit: Quit Nguyen Lomo Saltado Each piece of beef tenderloin gets coated in a subtly sweet marinade that we use to dunk the golden fries. The lomo is hands-down the most consistent dish at Latin Bites. photo credit: Quit Nguyen Tallarines Verdes The Tallarines Verdes combines pesto fettuccine with a strip of seared churrasco, but on an off night, it's overdone, and the pesto is lackluster." - Gianni Greene

The 8 Best Peruvian Restaurants In Houston

"The West Oaks restaurant Latin Bites makes excellent Peruvian food from start to finish. Get your meal going with a well-balanced pisco sour, then dive into a plate of tenderloin beef skewered served with crispy roasted potatoes, and end with the lomo saltado with beef soft enough to fall apart on its own. The room is usually full of families having a mini reunion or celebrating someone’s high school graduation. We’d make any excuse to come back to Latin Bites, and if you’re into all-day Happy Hours or high-energy birthday singing by waiters, you will too. " - gianni greene, chelsea thomas, julie takahashi

Went with a group of friends and our first time trying Peruvian food. The presentation of the dishes were amazing and tasted just as great. Everything tasted very fresh. We will definitely be coming back.

We visited Latin Bites thanks to a recommendation from a friend during a short trip to Houston, and I’m truly glad we made time for it. The experience from beginning to end was wonderful. The ambiance, the soft background music that allows for easy conversation, the lighting, the cleanliness, and the service from our server were all spot on. What truly stood out, though, was the food. We started with the trio of empanadas, each with a different filling. They were perfectly crispy on the outside and soft inside, packed with flavor. I had the red sangria with fresh fruit, which was incredibly refreshing, while my husband enjoyed a perfectly crafted Old Fashioned. For our main courses, he ordered the Churrasco a lo Pobre, which I also got to try, and it was outstanding. I went with the Lomo Saltado a lo Pobre, and every bite was exceptional. The sauce that came with the empanadas was so delicious that I saved what was left and used it to enjoy a few bites of the lomo—it was the perfect match. To end our meal, we shared their well-known alfajores filled with dulce de leche and had two cortado coffees. Everything was absolutely delicious and reasonably priced. The wait time between ordering and receiving our food was slightly long, but nothing unexpected when you know they’re preparing something fresh and worth it. Whenever I return to Houston, I’ll be sure to visit Latin Bites again. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Our server Michael was amazing at explaining and recommendations. Food was spectacular. The flavor was very authentic. Portions fit for American appetite 😂

Google
Had a good experience here, last minute reservation before closing. They accommodated us happily. Food was very good for Peruvian cuisine. Prices were fair for the food quality. Would definitely revisit!

Google
Was there for lunch midweek. Ordered the empanadas, brussel sprouts as appetizers and they were so good. Entree had their traditional ceviche and this green drink - both really good. The ceviche was so flavorful.

My first time eating here… flavors weren’t that bad but not the best either… on the other hand, the attention and service were deplorable. I spent over $100 and firstly I wanted to try two things, but I don’t eat some of the sides they offer so I wanted a mixed Shaufa with my steak… I didn't care the price I was gonna pay both, I just didn’t want the rest I was gonna pay full price anyways…And I made sure to let him know about it… but he said NO, well I ate as he said he was allowed to take my order… then It was a very bad day for me, I just went to that place to calm myself… and that took me way more off… At the end I was okay but I wanted something sweet so I asked for Lukuma Tiramisu or something like that, to what the guy responded, that dessert it’s only for Restaurant Week Menu, so another NO… again… I wasn’t asking for free, I have my money… and he didn’t care to at least offer me something else, he just got away… THAT WAS THE RUDEST THING EVER. I won’t go back to such a place ever again.

I asked for the ceviche, although I asked for spicy it was very very mild but the flavour was on point. Great service, definitely will go back for a ceviche, one of the best I have had in Houston.

Google
The food was great, I don’t have any complaints. My husband thought the burgers were amazing! It just took forever to get our food and it was a bit hot in the restaurant. They seemed to be short staffed. I visited the first week of August.

Yelp
My manager at my workplace recommended this place, and I decided to try it out with a friend who loves Latin cuisine. We always want ceviche, and Latin Bites' ceviche is something I wish I could eat regularly (if only I didn't live a bit far away). The only thing my friend and I didn't expect was how large the portion size would be. Eating the ceviche between the two of us filled us up to the point that we could barely eat half of our entrees. You really do get a bang for your buck out of it. Although the churrasco wasn't tender enough, the flavors and chimichurri sauce were still tasty. I have no complaints about the yucca fries either -- they were fried and flavored to perfection! The rotisserie chicken was also good and not dry at all. It was still tasty by the next day as leftovers too. I'd love to come here again and try more of their foods!

Yelp
We swung by to indulge in their happy hour, arrived about 6:15 PM and after we were seated in a completely empty restaurant - not a soul at any table or at the bar - he said that the happy hour actually ended at 6 PM. I showed him their website which said it ended at 6:30, and he said he would mention it to the owner, but there were no deals available. Ok, fine. We were going to let it slide and just order some things anyway when the same guy came over to our table and stuck his phone in my face and told me to show him on his phone where on their website it said 6:30. I did (again), but at that point having an employee angrily confront us in a completely empty restaurant was too much so we bailed. I can handle not getting as good a deal, but the confrontation was absolutely too much.

Yelp
This Place is by Far the Very Very Best Peruvian Cusinie established here in Houston Texas in 2006. The name of this Restaurant is called Latin Bites Kitchen because of there diversity of so much Peruvian Food before 2000 and after year 2000.

Nelimar Victoria M.

Yelp
Best Peruvian food in town, service is good, ambiance is nice. The food spoke by itself

Maritza D.

Yelp
As a Peruvian who has lived in Texas for more than 42 years and travels to Peru every year, I can say that Latin Bites is the best Peruvian restaurant in Houston. It really has the flavors of the restaurants in Peru. Please, if you want to know what Peruvian food is all about, go to Latin Bites. Do not waste your money going to other so-called Peruvian restaurants in Houston. There is no comparison, and the prices are very comparable to those of the other Peruvian restaurants. The drinks, food, ambiance, and service are A plus. Diego, Michael, and the whole crew are outstanding. We travel two hours every time to eat at Latin Bites.

Yelp
This Resturant is a hidden gem. Ambience not great but the food makes up for it big time Must have 1. Calamari and Yuca 2. Beef empanadas (5 star) 3. Lomo saltado ( beef tenderloin with onions, tomatoes etc ) served with your choice of rice etc. - Best dish Dessert Tres leches - Possibly one of the best in Houston

Yelp
This restaurant is amazing! I had the empanadas- beef and spinach for an appetizer. They were so flavorful and so tasty! For my entree I had the lomo saltado. This dish was awesome! Service was fast and friendly. Waiter answered all of our questions and knew the menu very well. Easy parking not too crowded. Their limonada was FRESH and delicious! Definitely will be back to try more.

Yelp
This is an incredibly unique and fantastic restaurant. Nothing like it around! Fresh and tasty Peruvian/Latin food. I dream about it when I am out of town.

Yelp
Excellent food and excellent service! The ambiance was chill and welcoming! We ordered the ceviche sampler and it was very delicious! They also have passion fruit juice and more! First time visiting but will not be my last!
google avatar

Yelp
Place is very clean and service is prompt and friendly. The choices of ceviche are very good and our table got the sampler platter. We loved it! Got their seafood, fried rice platter and wasn't a fan as all I tasted was rice. The others of my party ordered a fish dish and were very satisfied with the serving size and taste. Got some limey drink that was fresh and tasty. Will definitely be back to eat more ceviche!

Yelp
If you want to try a Latin place, I highly recommend this restaurant. -The food was savory. I definitely felt the authenticity in the appetizers and the paella. The presentation of the food was phenomenal. - customer service was great and the staff was friendly. I honestly loved the vibe. It was modern with a twist of spanish. Prices are great!

Yelp
Upscale classy vibe with upbeat music when you walk in. We ordered an appetizer of beef heart skewers called anticuchos that were so tender and delicious covered in rocoto sauce. The sauce has a little kick and so delicious. Then my husband and I shared the trio plate that had lomo saltado, carne secó, and pollo desabrado with a side of canary beans. If you are looking for a refreshing drink you must have chica morado. Then we treated ourselves to Alfahoras, which were cookie sandwiches filled with creamy milky filling. Overall a great visit and we look forward to returning.

Yelp
I love this restaurant, the food and the service excellent. Very good! The dishes was so yummy! Love the empanadas, and the Lomo Saltado Atmosphere and service were both amazing! Five stars and will definitely come back again.

Yelp
Woe is me. I haven't been here in a LONG time. Reserved Father's Day for brunch buffet, only to find they don't do that anymore. So sad. Well, either way food is still good. Ordered tequenos, the ceviche sampler, two churrascos, and the star of the show, a mahi mahi that my father in law said was amazing. You have to try this dish! The other star is the passion fruit tea. I had two! It's sooo good! Comes with fresh fruit and honey. The manager does a great job checking on us. I believe Diego was out waiter, he also provided great customer service.

Yelp
I was so excited to discover authentic Peruvian food in Houston! I went for happy hour and was served by super friendly staff who immediately offered to store my umbrella away for me since it was pouring. I sat at the bar and ordered a chicha-flavored pisco sour (not on the HH menu, but it was worth it!!). The ceviche was priced for HH and it was delightful. A good portion size, with the option to add rocoto to make it spicy. They even gave me some rocoto to take home because I asked if they sell to-go portions. It was really good, and I'm already itching to go back!!

Yelp
This Peruvian restaurant was recommended by a friend and I'm glad to say it was outstanding. To start off the Empanada Trio was delicious, we tried one beef, cheese and spinach. The Lomo Saltado was a plentiful serving of incredibly cooked beef with delicious rice, plantains, and fries over a savory and sweet sauce. My partner got the Pescado a lo Macho and was offered a choice between mahi mahi and salmon. It was served with a nice selection of clams, muscles, shrimp and calamari. I want to especially say thank you to Santos for his excellent service and help with the menu. Will definitely be returning here again!

Yelp
Excellent place to eat ceviches and drink pisco sours! I recently tried ceviche, and it was a delicious experience! The dish was made with fresh fish marinated in lime juice, which gave it a bright, tangy flavor. The fish was tender and tasted really fresh. There were also crunchy bits of onion, cilantro, and a little bit of aji for some heat. The flavors blended perfectly, making each bite refreshing and zesty. It's a light dish, perfect for a hot day. If you enjoy seafood and bold flavors, I highly recommend trying Latin Bites ceviche!

Yelp
Woohoo for Peruvian Restaurant Representation in Houston! I was extremely excited to try a few traditional Peruvian dishes. It's been a few days, and I'm still on a flavor high from the flavors & combinations. *Market Ceviche- Although it's not served with chips or bread, it's a winner. The addition of the fried calamari provides some nice texture variety and crunch almost substituting the chip experience *Chicken Cilantro Rice- delicious, flavorful and not too heavy. The peas and carrots in the rice will almost convince you it's healthy...almost *Surf & Turf- Delicious, filling, and rich. My partner licked his fork *Tres Leches- I hope they keep working on. In my opinion it could be improved. Speaking of opportunity...although the food was lip smackingly good, the dining experience was less than 5 stars. The restaurant is spacious, but you can hear all of the banging in the kitchen when dining at the booths. It's not a deal breaker, but certainly distracting. Also, dispute the restaurant being less than half full the service was painfully slow...so slow that by the end of the meal we walked to find our waiter to deliver the check. On the plus side, he was sweet...just not attentive to our cues. I know it's extremely difficult to keep a full staff, so as I dined I'm willing to extend grace all around, but for the moment, I'll stick to requesting my order to go.

Carlos E.

Yelp
Very good menu selections. Excellent food. Professional and courteous service. I highly recommend this restaurant if you want to try Peruvian food.
google avatar

Lance M.

Yelp
I wouldn't recommend for breakfast. I haven't eaten here otherwise, so lunch and dinner may be great.... But breakfast was not. Coffee was stale. Eggs were way, way over cooked. Some restaurants just aren't equipped for breakfast. It was just weird. Should've known better when I walked in and it was completely empty. Oh well, nothing ventured....

Yelp
I totally forgot to take a photo of the dessert. But the tires leches is great too! This is one of my places my dad and I went to before this location. I think the avocado tiradito may be on my top things! My dad can't wait to try the chicken next time we are in Houston.

Claudia C.

Yelp
I just had the most amazing experience there. The staff was very attentive and helpful. Food was amazing and generous with portions size. The place has like a cafe/ restaurant vibe. Would definitely come back!!!
google avatar

Moonlight G.

Yelp
The food is so delicious and tender. My boyfriend and I ordered a couple of sharable and we still took most food home. I recommend getting the ceviche and the empanadas, it's super good! For a non alcoholic beverage I paired all food with the signature mint lemonade.

Yelp
Delicious food, welcoming Hispanic hospitality. Elegant and classy location . Food left me speechless.

Yelp
Service was amazing very attentive staff and food was delicious the anticuchos and pan con chicharon were perfectly seasoned

Yelp
I recently tried Latin Bites for breakfast/brunch, and I was completely blown away by the incredible flavors and deliciousness of the food. This place is a hidden gem, and I can't wait to go back for more! I started with their breakfast taco, and it was a delightful surprise. The taco was a perfect size, and the ingredients inside were so well-proportioned that every bite was a perfect combination of flavors. But the real star of the show was the breakfast bowl I ordered, with avocado, quinoa, and an array of other healthy and delectable ingredients. It was nothing short of amazing. The flavors came together beautifully, and I couldn't get enough of it. The freshness and quality of the ingredients were evident in every bite. I'm eagerly looking forward to my next visit to Latin Bites because I can't wait to savor their food again. The experience was a delicious journey, and it's safe to say I'm excited to continue exploring their menu. Don't miss out on this culinary gem!

Yelp
Amazing food and service. Food was fresh, flavorful and a unique twist to certain dishes! Was surprised how unique the flavors were!

Yelp
Underwhelmed by the entire experience. Decoration was so-so. It looks better in pictures than in-person. The restaurant was empty, yet the service was slow. There were plenty of servers but they would rather stand around and chat. We were there for happy hour but pricing really wasn't too different. Considering the quality, it's overpriced. We got the ceviche and empanadas. Neither were good. The fish in the ceviche had a ton of gristle and was hard to chew. The fish also tasted old and smelly. The empanadas were just ground beef in a shell that wanted to fall apart. Wish I could like this place.

Yelp
My wife and I found this place years ago on one of our anniversaries and have loved it since then. The food and staff has always been great until our visit today. We went in on Mother's Day and as expected with most restaurants, they were busier than normal. I tried making reservations the day before and there were no slots available, but decided to give it a shot and wait to be seated. When the manager on duty greeted me, he stated they were completely booked due to reservations through close. Typically there's just a longer wait for walk-in's on busy days, but thought that was just their policy for the day due to Mother's Day. As I went back to speak with my wife, we decided to order takeout, so along I went back inside to order a takeout order. The manager refused the takeout order as well, which was fine since online orders weren't available either. However, on my second trip inside, the manager had a family waiting on a table. I asked them if they had a reservation to which they did not, yet was told they could be seated in 15 min. After my wife found out, she went inside and was greeted differently, and was immediately put on the waitlist not mentioning anything about me. We sat outside and waited for our seat, but the manager was completely shocked to see me when he turned the corner. During our meal, customer after customer who did not have reservations were continuously put on the waitlist. After coming to this place several times over the years, I've never been treated like this and it's unfortunate that this happens in this day and age. I hope the owners and manager sees this and learns not to judge a book by its cover. I don't think I'll ever be back.

Saydiesmom R.

Yelp
The food and ambiance was ok. Service was negligent. There are too many great options in the Houston area to settle for just "ok."

Maryel R.

Yelp
Best Ceviche I've ever had! The service was amazing the so was the ambiance. The price is pretty good for the amount of food and quality. I definitely recommend it!

Yelp
Latin Bites moved a few doors down but still in the same strip. It was a bit hard to find but look for the LBK circle logo. They renamed to Latin Bites KItchen. Very nice interior gives it that casual modern vibe. Let's move on to the food! Chicha Morada- delish! Taste homemade and fresh. Pork Sandwich - pretty good but the bread and meat is a bit on the dry side. I think its supposed to be like that since this is the 2nd time getting it. Wish it came with a side instead ordering add-on. While decent in size to make you content but not enough to make you full. Not many places sell this type of peruvian style pork sandwich so get it if youre craving for it. My Peruvian bf loves it. Golden Fettuccine - THIS IS DAMN DELICIOUS! It was love at first "bites". My eyes got wide at how amazing this dish is. The flavor is so rich and savory. The meat is tender and flavorful. I never had anything like this. Very unique dish you can't get anywhere else. Its a must try. No, you HAVE to get it. Alfajores- delicious little cookies. It would pair well with coffee. The cookie is a bit on the crisper side but that won't stop me from devouring them. Pisco Espresso- if you're an avid coffee drinker, this drink will make you feel some type of way. This potent drink will give you wake me up and a buzz but in a good way. The aromatic will hit your nose first and you will instantly know this is good stuff. Our waitress Iris made our evening dining experience so wonderful. She is amazing all around. Very attentive, patient, sweet, and engaging. "One of the best waitress we ever had" - my bf.

Felicia J.

Yelp
If your looking for good Peruvian food this is the place. The food was delicious. The service was amazing. I highly recommend to come here
google avatar

Josue C.

Yelp
The place is cute, clean, and very pleasant. The presentation of the food was nice. The food itself, is good.... But not for the price. This could be overlooked, if the service was half decent. But quite honestly, it was terrible. I usually extend grace to wait staff. I'm a teacher, so I understand how difficult it can be to work in a fast paced environment, provide great customer service, and be attentive to everyone's needs. However the staff's service was underwhelming. Our waiter never got our cues, and didn't even ask us if we were going to order more food after our appetizers. She also didn't pick up our plates after the appetizers were done and rarely came by to provide water. I get it, COVID has put a strain on the service industry. But for goodness sake, it's a tiny restaurant, all the waiters can see everyone, and they seemed more interested in standing around than providing quality service. I really wanted to like this place, but it was a disappointing way to spend my hard earned money.
google avatar

Andrea P.

Yelp
If you love Peruvian food Latin Bites is the place to go. I've been here several times and it never disappoints. From the food to the service is amazing and excellent. I went with my best friend, her daughter and my son for lunch. We ordered lomo saltado for two, lomo saltado a lo pobre which includes beans, a fried egg and fried plantain, salchichas (wieners and fries) and to drink we had Chicha Morada (purple) which is a typical Peruvian drink made out of purple corn. Everything was delicious and the meat was so tender and juicy. If you love wine, every Wednesday all bottles are half off. I love Latin bites!! I will always go back.

Steve H.

Yelp
My lunch group enjoyed the bowl and burger options. Portions weren't skimpy and meals were prepared well. Pricing seemed higher than expected but what isn't these days. Service was so-so but part of might have been due to my inability to speak Peruvian. Located in a retail strip but appropriately decorated for dining.

Rakibaa R.

Yelp
Great service however the food was terrible we were a party of 4 very disappointed. Won't be back.

Yelp
Great flavors! The Peruvian ceviche had a large amount of fish and incredible flavors, the corn and roasted corn added a great variety of textures, plus the sweet potato was the perfect additive to balance the spice! We really enjoyed the churrasco's plate accompanied with sweet plantains, sweet potatoe fries, white rice and Charro beans! It was a very hearty portion. We also got the mahi-mahi served with calamari and shrimp with white rice. All of the portions were great. Our service was impeccable, the manager stopped by to make sure we were good.! We will be back.

Yelp
Good food (best ceviche I've ever had and the paella was good as well) good service, good ambiance and decor

Yelp
Love it. Excellent service, and the food is outstanding. The ceviches are delicious. Overall have enjoyed dining at the restaurant.

Yelp
Wow! The only place wrong here, is that all of Houston is not lined out the door waiting to get in, and savor this authentically prepared Peruvian cuisine. Great for me. They were able to squeeze me in right before my 8pm show. I been to fine dining Peruvian restaurants in Mira Flores Peru and Holy Smokes it felt like I was there again. The Ceviche made fresh with high quality ingredients, and plated so beautifully. Every bite more delicious than the next. This is my 3rd time here visiting from San Antonio and OMG they have been consistently amazing. I have hundreds of options, but I choose Latin Bites every time. My only regret, San Antonio doesn't have a Latin Bites. In my 15 years working in the industry, I'm extremely impressed and it's hard to impress me. Do yourself a favor and get there soon. Service was nice. Alexandro was polite and professional thank you. Hostess was kind and attentive. Chef, you are Amazing!

C B.

Yelp
Well, let me start off by telling you that I am married to a wonderful Peruvian gal (great cook) (and beautiful). We were in the area killing time waiting for the traffic to die down and decided to stop in to check out this restaurant (love Peruvian cuisine). Started off with a couple of Pisco Sours (catedral) which I thought was a larger size cocktail, turns out to be in a slightly larger glass and a double shot of Pisco. Was tasty but not worth the price and still about the size of a regular sour that you might get anywhere. The regular Pisco sour is $12.00 and was pretty small. Mostly foam. We next ordered a couple of Anticucho Skewers. My wife liked those and they were tasty also. Next was an order of fried Calamari which was the worst I have ever had. Was like shoe leather! Sent that back! After that we had the Causa, which we would say was not bad. The yellow Peruvian potatos makes this dish. Our main dishes were the Lomo Saltado Surf and Turf which is beef and shrimp and Seco de Carne. The Saltado was just ok. Alot of juice (a little salty) which was totally absorded by the potatos, making them soggy and mushy by the time I was almost finished with the dish. Meat was not real tender. The Seco had nice flavor but they use either canned or frozen carrots and peas. Would have been better with fresh veggies and a we bit of Aji Amarillo (Peruvian yellow chili paste) for a little spice. Same beef as above. The desert was awesome. Freshly made Suspiro de Limena, which is like a custard made from dulce de leche and a whipped egg white meringue on top. That was delicious, and the best part of the meal. Although we did not order the Ceviche (which we love), they use Talapia instead of Sea Bass like every other place that serves this dish. Cheap fish. Our total bill for two was $167.00 for a party of two, quite expensive in our minds and the quality of the food as well as the atmosphere do not command that kind of pricing. Could have hit Morton's steak house for restaurant week and had a much nicer meal for the same money! Next time. Overall opinion is overpriced with mediocre food. Average atmosphere along the lines of a neighborhood cafe. Service was a little slow. The previous location was much nicer. In the end, we would not go back here.

Food and service was excellent. The ambiance was also perfect for brunch, we didn't have to shout over screaming children or loud music or sports games. The quality and portion sizes were perfectly priced. I'm so glad that we tried out this place because our other brunch establishment limited their breakfast items.
