Not really what I would consider a L'Auberge quality hotel at all. There rooms are fine, but there is no place to lounge, to just be and enjoy. The patio only works if the weather is nice, which is challenging for Carmel. The location is great for access the charm of the town. But really, it is rather a drag of a place to stay with no amenities to justify the price. And do not take their recommendations on where to eat and what to do unless it is to avoid their suggestions! They all were very mediocre and not what I would expect from a luxury hotel.||For specifics, the "lobby" has two doors that are always open letting in the very cold air. They did not have our room ready by 4 pm and then forgot about us while we were waiting for them - kept asking us who we were and why we were waiting....even though we just spoke to them 10 minutes prior. Crazy lame. They forgot our orders for breakfast, gave us subpar recommendations, they just seemed very disorganized. The rooms are fine, clean, comfortable, but just kinda off about everything. And no ocean view. I would seriously stay some place else, especially for the kind of money they charge.

Great location for Carmel by the sea getaway. Delightful intimate center courtyard capturing a French boutique hotel. Our first floor room overlooked the courtyard which we enjoyed however can be noisy as outdoor breakfast set up starts at 8:00 AM. There is a limited breakfast menu included with the room during our two night stay with option to dine in room or outside. The breakfasts were delicious, we especially enjoyed the blueberry compote. One morning the bacon was burned and they graciously brought more bacon. Hotel offers cosy bar area with fireplace creating nice ambiance for after dinner drink. We dined at Aubergine which was a culinary adventure and highlight of our stay.||Overall staff was courteous. Monica at the front desk was welcoming and responsive to any requests.

Google
Very disappointing stay -- This L'Auberge is NOT affiliated with the L'Auberge Group that owns L'Auberge Napa. I wish I had checked that assumption before booking. The rooms were OK but with flaws. The decor was mismatched and dated. The roller shade on one of the two ocean-facing windows of Room 30 was broken, which I reported to the front desk, and no one came to fix that. The five pillows in the room were identical -- synthetic balloon-like (no loft or contour) -- and when I called the front desk to ask for alternatives I was advised that there were none, and that the few cotton pillows they kept on hand were already lent out. The in-room Nespresso (three capsules) was appreciated, but the refrigerator held only individual plastic non-dairy creamers, not actual milk, The breakfast options were in the room or in the courtyard, weather-permitting. I decided against the courtyard because it looked so dreary and bleak, see my photo for the sad-looking flower boxes in the windows. The home across the street had lovely lush flower boxes, and so the scraggly landscaping is not due to climate. Even though breakfast was included in the rate, I decided to go outside the hotel. The service was similarly uninspired and disinterested, with the exception of the young woman who served me a glass of wine before I left for dinner. You should also be aware that the second floor rooms require climbing narrow and steep stairs. Fine for me but would not suit anyone with mobility issues. On the plus side are the location and the valet parking included in the rate. However, at the rates they are charging, everything else about the experience was decidedly below expectations. I would not recommend.

Google
It’s hard to believe the R&C designation and 5-star rating have not been revoked from this hotel. The historic charm does not compensate for the overall inadequacies, noted by other reviewers, and the issues we personally experienced. Do not expect your stay to even remotely resemble that of other Auberges.||Rooms: The rooms are not terribly outdated, but the charm is fading and a remodel is overdue. Pillows are lumpy, walls are dinged, water damage in bar cabinet, no A/C and too noisy to open windows etc.. Not 5 star, or even 4.||Staff: Aside from our midnight chat with the downstairs restaurant employees, staff was gracious.||Noise: What made the hotel unbearable was the inexcusable and avoidable array of loud noises that went on past midnight and started back up at 7am. We returned from dinner at 9pm to discover the L’Aubergine bar packed, with partiers spilling out into foyer/reception area. For three more hours we had the pleasure of listening to unrelenting pounding EDM music vibrating through the paper thin walls. Over that we could hear entire conversations, as if people were in the next room.||Finally at midnight my partner decided to get dressed and personally speak to reception. Turns out the restaurant was long closed; the employees were blasting music and yelling over the loud music. After our complaint, the music was turned down. But, really? Should that be up to the guest?||Promptly at 7am we were awakened to a pounding mechanical racket above us, coupled with what sounded like furniture being moved and dropped above us, which lasted until we checked out. ||We couldn’t wait to get out. For a so-called luxury hotel with a theoretical “strict noise policy at all times,” it was by far the most uncomfortable, taxing hotel stay at any price in recent memory. L’Auberge Carmel, you failed spectacularly.

Delightful place - charming, comfortable, good service and elegant! We were there as a young family mid June and it was a very enjoyable stay. Nice breakfast too.

The rooms here are very cute and it feels so much like Europe. The breakfast service is such a wonderful way to start each day, we dined in the courtyard which was very nice.

My husband and I, along with our dog, stayed at La Auberge Carmel this past weekend. Two weeks before our stay, we were informed that the room we originally reserved months in advance was not available because we were bringing our dog. We were switched to Room 9 and had to pay a $250 pet fee (which is not only astronomical but also was not mentioned during the original booking).||Our room was directly above the restaurant - we had to call the Front Desk each night to request the music to be turned off. Additionally, we could hear not only every footstep from the room above us but also every time they flushed the toilet. Between the music from below and the noise from above, we barely slept. ||Every morning for breakfast, we were delivered a lovely meal to the room and then interrupted an hour later with a phone call or knock at the door asking for the breakfast tray to be placed outside. Our dinner was even interrupted our first night in Carmel from the front desk calling to confirm the breakfast time for the following morning. ||For what we paid to stay there, none of these issues should have happened. Location is perfect and the courtyard is seemingly lovely though it's also weird that the bar doesn't open until 5PM.

Yelp
My wife and I stayed at L'Auberge in Carmel to celebrate our one-year wedding anniversary, and it was easily one of the best hotels we've ever experienced. The entire stay was fantastic from start to finish. The continental breakfast was amazing, with a great variety of fresh, delicious options to start our day. We got breakfast shots and chocolate croissants every time which was my favorite. I ordered the Petit Dejeuner (scrambled eggs, chicken apple sausage, & whole wheat toast) and always paired it with tea, while my wife ordered the California Toast (sourdough toast, avocado, arugula, lemon vinaigrette, radish & pickled shallots). When we'd be out during the day, we couldn't wait to get back to our room every evening, as we were treated to complimentary warm delicious cookies, which was such a thoughtful and delightful touch. We looked forward to the knock on our door every time! Our room was incredibly cozy, filled with a sense of history that added to the charm. The heated bathroom floors were a luxurious bonus, especially on cooler mornings. The hotel's architecture is stunning, and you can feel the attention to detail in every corner of the property. One of the best parts was the location. The hotel is within walking distance to many of the places we wanted to visit in Carmel, making it easy for us to explore the area without needing to drive. The staff were exceptionally accommodating and friendly, always going out of their way to make our stay special. If you're looking for a memorable and charming place to stay in Carmel, I highly recommend this wonderful hotel. We left feeling relaxed, well-cared for, and eager to return.

Yelp
I have had the pleasure of staying at L'Auberge in Carmel twice now, and each visit has been nothing short of extraordinary. My first trip was a solo adventure, and the second was with my husband for our anniversary. Both times, the service, the ambiance, and the overall experience far exceeded any expectation I had. The hotel is the perfect blend of luxury and quaint charm, exuding a very European feel that immediately puts you at ease. Every detail, from the décor to the staff's attentiveness, is meticulously curated to ensure a memorable stay. One of the standout features of L'Auberge is its prime location. Nestled near all the popular sites in Carmel-by-the-Sea, you can easily walk everywhere, which adds to the charm of the stay. Strolling through the picturesque streets, exploring local shops, and dining at delightful restaurants--all just a stone's throw away from the hotel--makes for a perfect getaway. Our anniversary stay was especially magical, with the staff going above and beyond to make it special for us. The personal touches and the warm hospitality truly made us feel celebrated and appreciated. We are already looking forward to our next visit and plan to make this trip at least a couple of times a year. If you're seeking a luxurious yet intimate and charming stay in Carmel, I cannot recommend L'Auberge enough. It's a true gem!!

Yelp
Wow. It's hard to put into words how amazing my trip at L'Auberge was. I decided to do a staycation in Carmel after a long month of work and stress. The staff were quick, friendly, efficient, and had excellent recommendations. As someone who loves antiques, vintage items and unique architecture, this place blew me away. It was a perfect mix of vintage and modern, especially in my room. Everything felt so homey and well thought out. The food was exquisite and they even gave me free complimentary cookies, candies, and still water. I cannot wait to come back here, if you're wondering where to stay in Carmel, this is your place.

Yelp
I had opportunistically been looking for a hotel near Big Sur for a weekend getaway with my wife as my kids would be away at camp. I didn't have enormous expectations, but it wasn't like I didn't have any either. L'Auberge Carmel blew them all away anyway What the venue does not have in size or embellishments, they do excel in what they are- a superb bed and breakfast that exceeded any expectations we had for our quick restoration visit. Without spoiling any surprises, I'll just say we had a wonderful short stay and will definitely be back for our next refresh adventure when we can!

Yelp
Excellent Service Excellent Restaurant and Wine/Champagne Excellent Rose Petal Romance Addon Package My wife loved the French style and luxurious bedroom. This was an amazing experience. It may be expensive, but it was the best hotel I have ever stayed in. Very good staff and wonderful aesthetics. No AC, so go when it's cooler. NOTE: You have to reserve the restaurant in advance, and the style is fancy, so go into that experience expecting fancy food that is expensive. If that is not your thing, then by all means, don't reserve the restaurant, but if you do like fancy meals, then definitely book in advance.

Yelp
Just would like to add from my previous review - nobody from the hotel's management team tried to reach out and explain themselves or apologize.,, what a shame

Lisa S.

Yelp
Everything about this place is right. Fabulous service. Wonderful food. Caring staff. (Thank you, Katya and Randy.) Comfortable accommodations. And a great location. We'll never stay anywhere else!

Yelp
This review is for the restaurant: Please do not waste you're money Presentation & service was amazing, but the food was just not up to par for what they're charging Would not recommend The sommelier was amazing & would say enhanced the taste of the dishes. Still overall a 1 star because it truly feels like getting scammed

Yelp
First, there is a lot to like about his property. L'Auberge Carmel has an unbeatable location, beautiful historic architecture, a friendly, capable staff and more. But when we arrived at the hotel on a warm Carmel day and were shown to our room, we were informed that there was no air conditioning in the property because it was "historic." My wife and I were flabbergasted. First, because we've never heard of a 5-star luxury hotel--historic or not--without air. Second, that there was no disclosure of this fact on the hotel's website, room description, anywhere. The desk clerk said there is a notification in the confirmation email they send out, but there wasn't on ours. The bellman suggested we open our windows and gave us a fan. But that caused a real problem with noise. Outside our back windows was an air conditioning compressor that kept going on and off and early in the morning garbage men pounded cans during their work. In addition, the front windows of the room faced the outdoor eating area for the restaurant and with our windows open, we heard all the conversations and shouting and noise of a busy common area. Our Room Number 17 was clearly the worst on the property. It was very unsettling. When their highly-touted restaurant, Aubergine, opened on the last full day of our stay, I went into the place and saw a split-mini air conditioning unit on the wall showering cool air on the guests. I guess the restaurant was in the "non-historic" part of the property. All this hotel had to do was disclose that the rooms aren't air conditioned. But that could affect bookings, so they keep it a secret. It's called lying by omission. We won't be staying there again, obviously.

Yelp
Charming with attention to detail, as always, excellent food and service. I recommend staying here!

Yelp
Loved the stay there! The room was clean, cozy, with heated floors in the bathroom and comfortable beds and pillows. As we walked into our room we had a little gift, caramels and warm cookies waiting for us. Ryan was super professional and helpful with our car and our luggage. Dinner at Aubergine was superb! In the morning we had breakfast in the charming courtyard and it was lovely. Michelle was such a joy to talk to and super helpful. All in all a great experience:)

Christian D.

Yelp
This place is worth nowhere near what you pay. Old, outdated rooms. You can hear everything from the courtyard, other guests, and outside. No valet - the staff acted like our car was pulled up out front despite our car sitting in the same spot all evening. The only redeeming quality of this hotel is the proximity to the beach and restaurants. My wife and I couldn't wait to leave, and felt like we had been duped. Never again would we stay there.

Yelp
Just don't come here. It's not quiet, it's not restful, it's not luxury. As others said, this hotel is extremely overpriced for what it is, super noisy and they called our room at 10am to ask if we were done with our in room breakfast which woke us up - WTF! Who does that!?? I've never had a hotel do that. These are not $800+ per night rooms by any means. They nickel and dime you on everything. Much higher end hotels cost way less and it's quiet. The entire night and morning there was constant noise things falling clanging. This place feels like a motel the walls are paper thin.. they try to be high end but they're really not. Later when we were walking in the area I realized I booked the wrong hotel than the one I meant to book when we got here but figured it would be fine (I meant to book cypress inn which I should have oh well). It wasn't fine. Leaving here massively disappointed .. we did not leave well rested and it was all a big headache. Never again.

Yelp
This place is so charming and it's got the cutest courtyard. We dined here when everything was still outdoor dining at the Michelin 1 star restaurant, Aubergine. It was delicious, except we had called the front desk prior to our stay and asked about the corkage fee. They said it was $25 but it turned out to be $75 per bottle, in which we found out after we received the dinner bill. Was rather surprised and disappointed when we got the bill since we had opened two of our own bottles, so $150 for corkage alone. First, the location and charm of this place is great. It's right in the middle of downtown Carmel and very close to Pebble Beach and the 17 mile drive. Parking is nonexistent. You would have to either look for your own parking which is hard, or would be easiest to just do the hotel valet! We got into our rooms, and we were greeted with a bottle of bubbly and their homemade caramel. Rooms: This was a bit tricky. The rooms are definitely outdated. It looks charming but once you stay in one of these rooms, you will then find out its flaws. First, the windows were not sound proof at all. They were single pane windows so in the morning at 7am, if there are trucks loading/unloading, good luck with trying to sleep in. You can clearly hear the cars on the street driving normally. You can also hear people talking. The windows also did not insulate the room very well, so we had to turn on the heater in the middle of the night. The heater was loud too! I want to like the rooms but there really was no winning with the noise. My favorite thing was breakfast in bed. Their breakfast is made by Aubergine and it was so delightful! Overall stay was just ok. The employees here are very friendly and even the valet guy was super nice. Love the European charm this place has, but the rooms definitely need a bit of updating.

Yelp
Very charming and cute - looks like a huge English cottage or something. Staff was great - very friendly and accommodating with great service. Bathrooms are updated with heated floors and excellent water pressure. My biggest complaint about this hotel is that there is absolutely no soundproofing. We got a downstairs room and we could hear the children in the family upstairs every time they walked around. You can also hear everything happening on the street outside. We paid for the room package with the breakfast included, and the included breakfast is not worth the money. You get two room-temp eggs with some room-temp coffee, a sad pastry, and a slice of toast per person. Anything more is an additional charge. Overall, I understand that the available hotels and inns in a quaint area like Carmel will be limited by the fact that they are generally in older buildings, but there was quite a bit left to be desired from my stay here, especially given that we paid fairly high rates. Given the lack of luxury hotels in the area, I'd probably stay here again, but will definitely be requesting an upstairs room and not getting the breakfast package.

Missy J.

Yelp
A great hotel experience that feels like Europe, but everything works and everyone speaks American English. The kitchen makes the room experience lavish with treats and the breakfast is the best. Please do dine at Aubergine--it is really a 3-Michelin star experience (hear, hear Michelin reviewers) based on the flavorful sauces and creative combinations. The wine-pairing offers a new winery and/or region to expand your wine knowledge and appreciation. Staying here was a true joy and will be repeated, soon we hope.

Justin F.

Yelp
We loved it! We were here for two nights as part of our honeymoon. This is such a well-run, relaxing, quaint hotel right in Carmel. It's a beautiful building, the staff are terrific, and the location can't be beat. And if you have any chance to eat at Aubergine, DO IT. The dinner was, hands-down, the best meal we've ever eaten. It was beautifully executed and delicious. A fantastic, fantastic dining experience in a beautiful setting.
google avatar

Kelsy G.

Yelp
This was the nicest hotel experience I've ever had. All of the little details from check in to check out made the stay truly relaxing. It was also the perfect location and close to everything in Carmel as well as day hikes in Big Sur and Point Lobos.

Margaret L.

Yelp
I was disappointed by my stay and ended up leaving to another hotel that was so much better. The room was mediocre. The most troubling aspect was that they play music in the courtyard all day long from the morning until 10:30 at night and I could hear it loudly in my room. I was not in Carmel to party. I was there for some peace and quiet. Clearly this hotel did not provide peace and quiet in the room.
google avatar

Ray M.

Yelp
This place is magical. Our room was gorgeous. Everyone kept on saying that it's a small room but for us, it was spacious. We liked the special treat of individually-packed snacks. It really felt like we were somewhere in Europe with the small windows and interior design. I love the smell of the bath products. It's amazing how even one night here can work wonders for your soul especially during these COVID times. Breakfast was on point. The plateware and glassware were from a special brand. We ate in the courtyard and it was very peaceful. The staff was courteous and quick. Would love to come back again soon and I highly recommend this place for everyone.

Hope B.

Yelp
This place is very cute. The room was nice and the staff onsite were very accommodating. We did the tasting at the restaurant with the wine pairing. My favorite courses were the meat courses (duck, ribeye, wagyu) and the last dessert (something involving pumpkin spice and chocolate and amazingness). During covid times they've moved the restaurant to the courtyard, which was right outside our Standard King room. The restaurant was very loud late at night, making it hard to sleep. If the rating was out of 10 I would probably give our experience a 7, just based on the overall price to joy ratio, but i rounded up to a 4/5 to be nice.

Richard B.

Yelp
Pretentious is the only word that describes this hotel accurately. The room is moderate in size but we had no way of knowing that there is no air conditioning in the rooms. They provide you what appears to be a $20 fan to move the stuffy air around. This for $1,000 a night. The rooms overlook a courtyard that is used for their Michelin restaurant so you either need to keep your windows closed and suffocate or keep them open and hear the conversation of the diners. The floors are old with no carpet so I am awakened each morning far too early by the people right above us. Breakfast is provided but other than basic eggs everything is a la cart, including toast. The small bar is very nice but a glass of wine starts at $25. Again, for $1,000 a night it makes no sense to nickel and dime people. I can afford it but it offends me to be taken advantage of. The vibe is all about the restaurant and it's Michelin star and the rooms appear to be a necessary afterthought. Oh. They also add a 20% gratuity on the ridiculous bar prices and add $35 a night for gratuities. Wow. Go elsewhere.

John C.

Yelp
My stay at L'Auberge was less than satisfactory. When I booked, the only room available was a courtyard view, which was okay. After check-in, I quickly learned that about 2 feet from the main window of the room were the dining tables for the restaurant. The single pane glass did not block any of the noise and it was like being a guest at the table. I could hear the entire conversation, the laughter, and clinging glasses well into the night. I went to bed about 10pm but the party continued for hours. The next morning, I asked the front desk for a different room, and none were available. I told them because of the noise I needed to check out. I fully expected to pay for the one-night stay but was totally surprised I was charged for an extra night for breaking my multi-night reservation. It cost almost $1,900 for the miserable noisy night. I have always had wonderful rooms and experiences at Relais & Chateaux properties around the world. In addition to the noise, the room needed an upgrade from the 1990's bath and décor. This property does not live up to the Relais & Chateaux standards.

Richard Y.

Yelp
This was our third stay but first post pandemic. Things have changed for the service industry. We have stayed on the courtyard level before but this time now that the dining had moved to the courtyard I would suggest you get a room in the back or higher up as the guest noise continues into the night and is distracting if you plan to bed in early. The food continues to be excellent. The staff are great as well. Overall nice place but don't get a room on the courtyard level.

Dechen B.

Yelp
L'Auberge was beautiful. This quaint cottage hotel with contemporary mission-style rooms built around a central courtyard made for a charming weekend getaway. Let me start with the good things: Breakfast in the courtyard was my favorite part of our stay. We ordered breakfast the night before on a tablet in the room. There were options for toast, eggs, pastries, and drinks. Their homemade toast was out of this world - it was dense, crunchy and had the slightest sourdough taste. The Breakfast tea was the best black tea I have ever had. I asked if I could buy the bread and tea to take home. Unfortunately the bread could not be bought. But the wait staff was nice enough to write down the name of tea company called Rare Tea Cellars. The rooms were exceptionally clean. I loved the heated floors in the bathroom and the giant bathtub. The interior design was antique but tasteful. All the staff were helpful and friendly. There were a few things that could've made our stay better: Our room was on the first floor with the main window facing the courtyard. During the day, this was not such a problem as people generally floated in and out of the courtyard. However, at night, the courtyard transformed into a Michelin star restaurant, Aubergine, with dinner guests dressed to the nines. One of the tables was directly outside our window. I joked with my boyfriend and said we could reach out from our window to steal someones meal or even join them for dinner from our room. All jokes aside, it was very uncomfortable to open the blinds during that time as we would be eye to eye with dinner guests. There were people dressed to impress enjoying a Michelin star meal while me and my boyfriend were in our PJs watching TV. Also because of the dress code for the restaurant, getting to and from the room in our very casual get up was quite awkward as we had to walk straight through the restaurant. It definitely dampened the atmosphere for the dinner guests, I'm sure. Additionally, there was quite some noise from 5PM until 9-10PM from the restaurant, which was not a huge deal for us but could be for people who like to get sleep earlier. We did mention to hotel staff our first night that we did not like the proximity of our room to the restaurant, and they offered to move us the following night when some rooms opened up upstairs. However, we decided to decline the offer given the fact that all rooms were facing the courtyard and moving to the second floor might've meant a worse room. Overall, the quality of our stay was not deeply affected by the location of our room and I would stay here again or at least come for breakfast.

Rachel H.

Yelp
If you're sensitive to noise, my recommendation would be to stay elsewhere. All the other reviews about noise level were on point. Because of the layout of the hotel, the restaurant courtyard is right in the center and noise level from there travels to the rooms. It doesn't help that they play bass heavy music at the bar till 11pm even though they state on their website they have a strict no noise policy. On one night music went past 11pm and we had to call multiple times before they turned it off. If you stay on the ground floor, you would also have to contend with the creaks from the room above and it can get pretty bad depending on who stays there. So basically our sleeping hours were at best from 11pm-6am. When we made note to the front desk, our comments were greeted with disdain. So condescending and patronizing by this lady Monica who apparently is the manager. And I've read another bad review about her. If she doesn't like to be friendly maybe don't be in the hospitality industry? When we checked out, she never even said thank you. Despite of the lack of example Monica sets, everyone else was lovely. They were polite, welcoming, helpful, and simply a pleasure to be around. The hotel also provides good amenities. The breakfast is tasty and offers good choices. They tidy your room twice a day and leave cookies in the evening. They have a hotel car that can drive you locally. They have glass bottled still and sparkling water in the room along with nuts and caramel. If noise isn't a concern for you and you don't have to interact with Monica, definitely consider this hotel if you like proximity to the restaurants and shops.

Yelp
This Auberge reminds me of some place in Western Europe. Beautiful and charming property! The staff is very friendly and accommodating. Our room on the second floor is quaint, well appointed and masterly decorated. The bed is super comfortable with high end bedding and a light duvet cover. Bathroom is modern and renovated. Great shower and can't get over how strong the water pressure is! The quiet open courtyard is great for lounging. Restaurant on the street level is open for breakfast and dinner. There also a small bar in case you want to grab a drink. Also just steps away from restaurants and shops!

Yelp
Room was very small, breakfast substandard ; when checking out they did not give us a final invoice, but showed the invoice to us on the computer screen,; it showed we paid for the 2 nights and owe them nothing; came home and a charge of over $ 300 .00 was on my credit card; called hotel and the receptionist assured me he can not see any extra charges on my final bill; called my credit card and they handled it as a fraudulos activity , cancelled my card and commenced a dispute w/ the hotel. A big party was going on one night in the courtyard, extreme noise late into the night; unacceptable when paid over $ 700 dollars for one night; never again will stay in this hotel !!!!

Yelp
Nice but dated. Service is great and staff is friendly but wow our room felt extremely dated and in need of work. Also our room was on the first floor facing the restaurant patio so absolutely no privacy. Great location, but wouldn't stay here again.

Yelp
I gave this place 3 stars because it had some goods and bads. For the price of it, I would expect all goods so that is disappointing. First, the location was perfect. Right in the middle of downtown carmel and close to pebblebeach and everything. Parking is weird. They only have street parking and while it was not hard to find, we were told if we leave the key with the hotel we cannot get a ticket but if we keep it we might. Sounded fishy....how can the cop giving the ticket know who has the key when there was nothing put on our dashboard? And if we did get a ticket the hotel said they would take care of it....but would that be a weird battle? Here is our ticket now we will have to send you the bill when we get it? Just weird. At first, I thought maybe they were moving cars non stop like musical chairs to avoid the ticket but the car was in the same place most of the time. Who knows. I did not score them a 3 star based on this, it is just something I thought worth mentioning. The grounds were nice and had a Europe feel. The rooms were OK....very dated and No A/C. We got hot at night even with the windows wide open Our biggest complaint was the service. It took forever to get waited on while seated. Whether it was for breakfast in the AM where we pre-picked our food or just a drink at night. It was like the staff knew we were there but walked past us over and over. When we would finally get someone they would leave again never to come back. After complaining that we sat for about 30 minutes and still had no order in for just a drink the manager came by to apologize. Instead of apologizing and saying how he would fix it, he made some snarky comment about how we must be upset and he wont throw "salt in the would" and then walked away.

Yelp
Overrated. Rooms are average. Most rooms abut a courtyard which serves the restaurant so noisy at night. We ended up switching rooms which helped slightly. They comped us for the first night which was appreciated. Overall disappointing for the price. Breakfast is included - only the basics. Service was slow and piecemeal.

Yelp
We loved our visit to L'Auberge Carmel last week. We'd honeymooned at this hotel 40 years ago (when it was the Sundial Inn). The hotel has the same charm and elegance that it had years ago. The staff, the food, the ambiance, the comfy bed and the attention to detail were near perfect! We'll be going back again someday soon.

Yelp
We loved our stay here! We took our dog with us and they were remarkably dog friendly. The bathroom floor was heated (the best) and the bathtub was huge! Also the staff was so friendly and helpful and the morning breakfast in the courtyard reminded me of being in France. As the other reviews mentioned, the hotel is not very soundproofed so you can hear a lot of noises from outside and inside the hotel. We didn't mind this so it's not affecting my rating! But our dog didn't get a great night's sleep haha :)

Yelp
This has to be the best hotel in Carmel / the area. The service is fantastic, the rooms are wonderful and the restaurant is simply out of this world!

Yelp
My wife and I celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary on New Year's Eve at L'Auberge. We had never stayed at this hotel but recently noticed it when walking by one evening. We first noticed their quaint little bar with a fireplace that drew us in to take a closer look. When we spoke with the front desk person and learned about their Michelin star restaurant we decided we had to give it a try. So glad we did. We booked a ocean view room, which was spacious, comfortable, huge walk-in shower and soaking bath. Wonderful. The staff could not have been nicer and responsive. Dinner on New Year's Eve was spectacular. Not sure how many courses we had but each and every course was incredible and paired with a wonderful wine. The sommelier was very knowledgeable and the wines just awesome. We also had a TV celebrity sitting next to us which was fun. Honestly, it was a weekend we'll never forget and so glad we stayed at L'Auberge.

Yelp
This is a great hotel. European is style with a great little bar and covered outdoor area for breakfast and socializing with a group. The staff is friendly and helpful. We had room 19 and the bathroom was a real disappointment for the price point. We had no water pressure in our shower, we ended up using the tub to shower. Also there is a part of the wall that juts out and leaves very little room to walk past to the major part of the bathroom. It just out where the vanity starts, so the space is just wide enough. I'm actually surprised it passes code. I personally hit my head once and then started to walk past it ducking. Again, just not something g I expect at the price point of this hotel.

Yelp
The restaurant was incredible. My friends and I enjoyed the 8 course meal with wine pairings. I was pleasantly surprised by the size of my room and the 4 poster bed was beautiful.

Yelp
We have stayed in many Relais & Chateaux properties, principally in France. This was our worst experience with an R&C property. Check in was fine, and we had a rental car. We parked in front of the hotel and they were to valet park it. We returned in four hours and the car was still there in a two hour parking zone labelled electronic enforcement. I have gotten camera based parking tickets before and did not want one with a rental car thousands of miles from home and have to seek reimbursement from the hotel. The two staff in the check in area were busy chatting with each other and said not to worry as they kept an eye out for the meter maids, not a very comforting response. The room was fine, other than I laid my clothes out on the window seat, which had sand on it. It doesn't take much to dust or vacuum that off when the room is cleaned. We were having trouble logging into the wifi, so I thought I would call downstairs. The phone is labelled "100 Operator". So, I dialed 100 and got a "this is not a working number message", so I went downstairs. The desk clerk told me to dial zero and I said the label says 100. Their interest level was low at best. We had breakfast delivered since they either delivered or you could sit on the patio with heaters and blankets (it was 45 degrees in the morning) as the restaurant was closed. Breakfast arrived on time. The coffee was good and hot, however, the eggs were uncovered, so they got cold quick outdoors at that temperature. There were two of us and we have two orders of toast - we got two slices. There was ketchup and jam, but not salt or pepper. On our way out, the desk person asked how our stay was and I explained not so great. We went out to the car and the manager, Monica came over. She was very apologetic and nice. She offered to take 25% off the bill because of the difficulties (which was nice, as we didn't ask for anything). She said should be get an email out that day, Monday morning, with her contact details and that we should let her know if we were returning. Very nice and the right thing to do. Never got the email. So, I called Monica and left a message with my email on the message. Never got a call back. Never got an email. Very disappointing in every way. Very poor service and a very poorly trained staff.

Yelp
I have mixed feelings about L'Auberge. We have stayed now twice. It's overall a lovely place. Pros: - Quaint courtyard - The cutest bar ever, teeny tiny with dark wood - Small but crisp rooms with lovely furniture - Heated bathroom floors - You can have your breakfast in the lovely courtyard and they make adjustments for people gluten free (my husband has a true sensitivity so this was much appreciated) - Nespresso in the room - Location in town. You can walk to everything - Staff is nice Cons: - noisy. - staff call and come to the room too much - this last time after a tough stay they lost our car keys thus delaying our exit. They were nice about it but I would almost prefer they were unkind and had our keys as we had a long drive back to LA. They were sure we had our keys on us so I was sitting in the bar literally unpacking the bags I had just packed, voraciously looking for my keys while my husband stood outside in the sun certain it would be remedied in seconds, which it wasn't. The main thing it comes down to I think is how much you need/want sleep. Both times we stayed here now, this time was 3 nights and last time was 3 or 4 nights, I was awoken at 6-6:30AM. The main issue is plumbing. When a neighbor flushes it is so loud it wakes you up. When a neighbor gets their breakfast delivered at 7 it wakes you up (the doors really carry). Then the garbage trucks started around 7 on unfortunately two of the mornings we were there. The windows are thin. So for 3 nights is was $1950 AFTER the 10% they had given off due to all the troubles I experienced the first time. Honestly seems excessive when there is this amount of morning noise, always. It's a lot for us anyway but I would almost pay more to sleep. But again the environment is lovely. Really nice. Beautifully manicured. And a tip- if you do not want to be disturbed take the phone off the hook, put the sign on the door AND ask the front desk not to have anyone to the room. We had 3 calls our first morning. And the first call was at 8:30AM (to confirm our 10am breakfast order I had cleared with front desk as being complete the night before). The next morning cleaning came and banged (it is a small room so the phone and door sounds quite loud) on the door despite the sign on the door. And unfortunately I was trying to get back sleep I had lost in the early morning due to noise. The night before I had taken the phone off the hook to be sure but I was still awoken by flushing, doors, trucks and then cleaning. Def ask the front desk to up the chances of not being disturbed.

Yelp
The staff was friendly and the room was fine but they do not have their act together regarding billing. I found 2: $357.00 charges on my bill that were incorrect as well as a credit for 202.00 that was posted as a charge. In total we were over-charged $916.00. Vincent, who seemed to feel my call was a nuisance, told me he would check into it and call me back. That was 2 days ago and I have not received a call from him. I did check wit AMEX and they said that the credits were issued but still have not received a call back from Vincent or any other staff member, to let me know what happened or that the credits were issued. Not good form. We will NOT be returning to this hotel.

Yelp
to make the matter worse, i saw the $100 pet fee posted to my card a few days after i checked out this hotel. Emily, who has no knowledge about service animal being different from pet, insisted that $100 is for all animal, period. I spoke with another person today Tammy at the hotel, she confirmed there's no fee for service animal. OF COURSE, its BY LAW. I tried calling the hotel again to dispute the charge in good will, of course, nobody ever picks up the phone as usual. Worst hotel to ever consider in Carmel.

Yelp
This is the worst customer service place I have ever dealt with. I spoke to Andrew Jay their general manager who refuse to give me a room when I had called to book it and they had my name in their system. The person that had booked me made the mistake on booking the wrong dates. Instead of resolving the problem Andrew had made me feel bad about the situation and said that it my fault that I booked the wrong date when it wasn't true. It was their employee that booked it for the wrong date. I had phone records of me calling in and time of me speaking to time. I felt totally insulted and discriminated because I was asian and wasn't good enough for the hotel. I was here to celebrate my anniversary with my husband and have never left a negative comment on a site before but this was just beyond unprofessional.

Yelp
We stayed here in late April 2021, during the pandemic. We liked the property because of its old time elegance and service. Unfortunately the pandemic caused some changes to their process like moving all dining outside to the courtyard. They reacted very well to the changes and met the challenges with grace and character. The staff was efficient, attentive and professional. This is a memorable property that we would come back to. The only reason we didn't give them five stars is because the room we were in (#25) should be upgraded to truly reflect a luxury property. We would suggest the addition of a towel warmer in the bathroom and a cabinet or armoire to house the television to make the room even more luxurious.

Yelp
I dined there on 9/19/2019. I'm local and I have been to many Michelin-starred restaurants, but it was my first time there. My friend and I had a tasting menu with 1.5 bottles of wines. It was such a beautiful experience.

Yelp
My husband and I can't say enough good things about this place. We fell in love with Carmel, a lot because of L'Auberge. Everyone was so kind, attentive and willing to help. They knew we were celebrating our anniversary and so they upgraded us to one of the best rooms. It was romantic, unique and gorgeous. Parking is tough to find but we looked forward to returning or retrieving our car whenever Edwin was valeting because he always put a smile on our face and made us feel special. In walking distance of most stores and restaurants. I would highly recommend it to anyone. We LOVE L'Auberge.
