The Best Road Trip-Worthy Restaurants Outside New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"Three different generations have simmered Laura Williams Broussard’s signature brown gravy, ladled over meat and threes since 1968. For years, folks from all over Acadiana lined up to taste Laura’s gravy. Now her granddaughter, 2025 James Beard nominee chef Madonna Broussard, is doing her proud at Laura’s II, which she opened more than two decades ago on University Avenue. A magnet for students from the nearby college and workers from the neighborhood, Laura’s II is known for oversized baked stuffed turkey wings, smothered okra, and some of the best rice and gravy in town. Don’t miss the daily special, from turkey necks to white beans and mustard greens." - Sarah Bisacca

Parts Unknown Season 11, Episode 7: ‘Cajun Mardi Gras’ Recap | Eater

"Over a lively Lafayette lunch with historian/DJ Herman Fuselier, “Creole cowboy” Dave Lamelle, and musician/business owner Sid Williams, the group dug into fried fish, rice and gravy, ribs, and smothered-and-stuffed turkey legs — dishes so compelling that the host was “all over” them like a heat-seeking missile. The meal doubled as a forum for a deep dive into Creole history, including the claim that Creoles were early American cowboys who herded cattle in Louisiana long before the West and that zydeco grew out of that cowboy culture, the washboard’s rhythm mimicking the trot of horses." - Greg Morabito

We went during lunch. The food was awesome, it's the fish that had me. It was so thick with meat and the batter was so good. The best fish I have ever tasted. 😋 The wait to order was not long. The wait for the food 15 to 20 min. 6 ladies rocking and rolling making orders as fast as they could, man the line was out the door for people wanting to order. They do call in orders or door dash. You can sit inside and enjoy your food. Definitely good home cooked food. I will be back to Taste more of there Menu. 😋

Google
Food was off the chain! The wait was kind of long but I DID go on a Sunday afternoon, but it was well worth the wait anyway! I had the turkey wing plate. Ate off this plate 3x for lunch and dinner lol.

Came here for the first time while traveling on the road from TX and Laura’s was recommended by a friend of mine and we decided to check them out and I have one word…wow! The food was so good that it made no sense!! We split one order of the stuffed turkey wings, with rice dressing, cornbread dressing, and broccoli & cheese casserole. The flavors were point and made me think of how my mama and grandma cooked. I almost shed a tear of joy lol. The food was made with love and you can tell by how everything tasted and the customer service was top notch! The next time I’m in the area, I’ll definitely be returning. A 10/10 experience!!

Google
My kids and I were in town for a band event and were looking for a great spot. Found this hidden gem not far from where we were at. OMG!! The food was amazing! Ms. Laura herself is amazing, and helpful, and soooo welcoming. It felt like we were going to a family members home. She was soo understanding of my child's allergies and understood we were from out of town. I will definitely be back here when I'm in town. The atmosphere, staff, and food just cant say enough how much I loved it.

Google
We tried this place based on a tiktok we saw and it didn't disappoint. We had fried catfish & turkey. the only reason I didn't give the food 5 stars is because most of the food had a kick to it. The catfish, dirty rice, and green beans - all spicy. I just didn't get a balance of flavors and I love spicy but not in all of the foods at once.

Google
Laura’s two is amazing. This restaurant is a hidden gem. I really enjoyed my food here my turkey was very flavorful my rice was well seasoned and that was some of the best corn I ever had. I definitely will be back.

If you are ever out and about in Lafayette this spot is going to hit the spot! These ladies are going to have me coming from Baton Rouge more often! My entourage were in tow and we all cleaned our plates. My Mom even got another caramel pecan cheesecake to go. My baby seemed to enjoy it as well she could have eaten a whole piece of fish by herself. The portions were large!!! We will be back I'll stop a get yall some blue store on the way!!! But as good as the food was here the blue store doesn't have anything on yall!!!

Google
Food So good and full of flavor. I see why they sell out so fast 😭 A+ 10/10 BUT be ready to spend $20+

Yelp
I do not live in Lafayette but, my entire family does. So, I have been visiting multiple times a year my entire life. However, I've only been to Lauras once in my 31 years...a shame. This past Sunday, I wanted to eat well and bring my great aunt something filling and soulful. It was only 11:45a so, I figured the time a day provided a great opportunity to try the famous " Lauras Two". When I arrived, on Sunday, the line was just into the dining room--not too bad--but I did see a few people leave because of the wait. Trust me, though, this is the kind of food worth standing in line for! (And yes, I've heard the line can sometimes stretch all the way to the exit, so go prepared.) I ordered the famous stuffed turkey wings with rice dressing, green beans, and sweet potatoes. Adding extra gravy on top of the rice dressing was a great call--highly recommend it! The turkey was seasoned to perfection, which is no small feat since turkey can sometimes be bland. Laura's Too, however, nailed it. Every bite was flavorful, and the sides were just as satisfying. To top it off, I tried the featured dessert, a pecan cheesecake, which was the perfect sweet finish to an incredible meal. If you're looking for authentic, well-seasoned Southern food that hits all the right notes, Laura's Too is the spot. Just be ready for a bit of a wait, especially on Sundays, but once you taste the food, you'll know it was worth it. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Upon entry, Laura is standing there taking your order with a very welcoming smile and personality. I had my two boys with me, she was very sweet to them..she even gift my little son a shark necklace. Everyone else was very nice too. Let's get to the food, I started off ordering the must haves, the turkey wing and the fried chicken and waffle. Everything was amazing. The spice on the turkey and rice was out of this world. Ahhhh can't wait to visit again. Will try other items next time but def will get the turkey wings gain. Yum yummm

Yelp
This review is from my eating here from about a month ago. I ordered the whole fried catfish plate. Which came with white rice and gravy ( I asked for light gravy) potato salad and corn machoux. Everything was pretty good just wish you would get a little more food. Considering the cost of the plate was $18.00 not including tax and tip (22.00). The best part of this meal was the fish. Well cooked and seasoned ( definitely not salty). The corn machoux was also pretty good.

Mona E.

Yelp
Food is seasoned just the way I like it! With a little kick. Huge portions. Friendly staff. I had turkey wings with corn and macaroni and cheese. Will definitely go back.

Yelp
It's time to refresh my review from 5 years ago. I'll cut to the chase. Nothing much has changed. It's still a 5 star restaurant. Without repeating too much from my original review, I stopped by for lunch on Thursday while driving thru town. The steam table is still there with its selection of meats and side dishes and they will fill your plate to order. Most meals are $15-$16 and come with one meat, white rice and gravy and two sides. I had several options that day but went with the stuffed Turkey wings with green beans and cornbread dressing along with the included rice and gravy. The meals here are huge. For what it costs you receive considerable value as you get enough food to take the leftovers home for another meal the next day. Those wings have about the same amount of meat on them as a 1/2 chicken and tasted sooo good. I love their rice and gravy and could make a meal of just that. The green beans were served country style in a delicious sauce. The cornbread dressing was different as to what I am used too as it was dark brown in color but very moist, flavorful and enjoyable to eat. My only complaint about dining here is that they only serve canned drinks. I really miss the self serve drink machine that they had when I first dined here. Please bring that back. If you love real Cajun food, love a great value and love delicious food, you will love Laura's Two. Come eat here!

Yelp
My husband and I had a fantastic experience for our first trip to Lauras II. The line was long (we went at 12:30) and by the time we got to the window they were out of a handful of things. We got: baked chicken with rice and gravy, seafood okra and baked beans; stuffed turkey wing with rice dressing, seasoned green beans and seafood okra; and a link of bbq sausage. Everything was fantastic! There was so much flavor and spice. I would come back earlier in the day to try other staple items.

Yelp
Some of the best food you will ever eat. From the ribs on Sundays (gotta get there early) to the Turkey legs, you simply won't be disappointed. There is a reason Anthony Bourdain went to this gem of a restaurant. Some of the best food in Lafayette.

Laura I.

Yelp
Saw someone recommend this place on TikTok and decided to bring the family and try it out for ourselves They DID NOT disappoint. We ordered the turkey legs, fried chicken, green beans, and dirty rice. Everything was great! In the words of my boyfriend "I've never seen turkey fall off the bone like that". The best authentic southern food we have had in a long time. The staff was all extremely friendly and welcoming. They even brought us out complimentary yams, which actually ended up being my favorite thing we tried! Will absolutely be coming back!

Yelp
You haven't had Turkey wings like this! We stopped by thanks to randomly watching Cooks Country episode on out local nc tv station. We decided to include it in our road trip stops. Omg! So glad we did! The savory, garlicky and spicy hint of creaole seasoning was on point! The wings also had parts of the skin that had a crispy texture to it as well. This was so darn good in my mouth mixed with the bed of rice the gravy ( in my case turkey stock) was mixed into. Madonna, the owner knew every customers name that came in. Wrote our orders on the styrofoam plates. Made recommendations for me as what sides to eat that didn't have pork in it per my request. I wish this place was in NC but enjoyed it sooooooooooo much! I hope to make some at home but know it wouldn't touch theirs by any means. If we ever are back in Louisiana, this a is a MUST! https://www.americastestkitchen.com/cookscountry/videos/5238-stuffed-turkey-wings

Yelp
Everything was delicious, the melt was good and highly recommend. Personal pan pizza was a good treat and fulfilling.

Yelp
My second time coming here and I decided to go on a Friday. They are pretty busy during lunch time so had to wait in line until the lady was ready to take our order. I love that they have hot sauce and other seasonings available to use in the dining area. Lots of seating options like booths and tables. The food portions are gigantic so be prepared by being very hungry, having to take home leftovers, or sharing with a friend. I ordered shrimp stew and fried fish. The fried fish was fresh out the fryer and covered the whole plate. The stew was seasoned so well and there was plenty of shrimp to feed the needy. I can't wait to come back here for more.
google avatar

Surgical B.

Yelp
I got their smothered pork chops seafood okra(spicy ) and Cajun Mac and cheese...loved it!! Madonna is truly the bomb and her staff southern hospitality at its finest!! Sooooo much food!!
google avatar

Biggy E.

Yelp
Doing a taste test and trying their food. So far it's good, large quantities, service is great. The staff is nice. Long line to order but moves fast. Shrimp and grits with fried catfish is amazing. Fried chicken and fried pork chops are good. The stuffed turkey wings are OK, a bit dry on some parts, the stuffing is Cajun spice mix. The turkey necks are OK, not as good as our local Cajun creole place - Annie Maes. The sides as OK as well. The ambiance is very local dive feel. Will definitely get the shrimps and grits again and will give the stuffed turkey wings one more time. More to try: grilled pork chops and meatballs.
google avatar

Bobby G.

Yelp
Outstanding food and even better atmosphere and service. I have had the stuffed turkey wing on several occasions and it never disappoints. Last time I went I wanted to try something different so I ordered the shrimp and grits with fried catfish. It was outstanding! Needless to say, I have never had anything bad here and am constantly satisfied with the flavor, portion size and the excellent service!
google avatar

Stacy E.

Yelp
HUGE portions & SUPER friendly top notch service! I heard the owner call EVERY customer by name & it felt like I was eating at a family or friends house! The fried chicken taste amazing!NOT DIET though
google avatar

Ann F.

Yelp
Great! Visiting from out of town, I took my parents, we wanted local food. We felt a bit out of our element, but the other customers and the employees really made us feel welcome. The food was amazing. I had the stuffed wing over rice dressing. The dressing soaked up all of the juices and was wonderful. I wish I could have eaten all of it, but it was way too much food. My parents each had the bbq sausage and loved it. I had each of the beans, baked and green. I thought the green beans were wonderful, and she warned me it contained pork (the baked were good, but so many places do this well). I heard the employees response to the other customers, they were sensitive to pork concerns, serving turkey gravy instead of pork, as requested. Arrive early if you want the corn bread dressing, it was out before we got there.
google avatar

Darren S.

Yelp
Food was amazing. I ordered 2 different plates and ate on them throughout the day. Places that are only open for a few hours a day are usually pretty good. I definitely recommend you stop by and enjoy.

Delia M.

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch today while visiting Lafayette, 1st time eating here and man was I blown away, they're were very friendly and helpful with the food suggestions, wow just so much food my husband and I decided to share a plate, the turkey wings just literally fall off the bone, the rice and gravy and white beans were super delicious, will for sure stop again on our next trip!!!! Highly recommend this place
google avatar

Peter N.

Yelp
Such great people here! Food is always delicious!!! Line gets long, but moves very fast! Best stuffed wings in the world! Check @eatinglafayette on Instagram and Facebook for more Lafayette food things!

Emily B.

Yelp
If you are looking for a local, old school creole cafe this is the place! Everyone is on a first name basis and you immediately feel welcome! You wait in line, order cafeteria style, and see the food in front of you that you are about to enjoy. The menu changes daily, so be sure and call. Wednesday is red beans and rice....we came on a Sunday from Texas and we will be back to get these as soon as possible! The food is hot and ready and made fresh! They are doing it right! Make you feel like family and the food tastes like home. A must stop in Lafayette!!
google avatar

Gerald H.

Yelp
Our first time to try, when you walk in it may be a little confusing, as you have to walk around and get in a line to order, then sit at a table or stand and wait until your name is called for pickup, you have the choice to stay and eat or takeout, as it's all served in a to go container, staff is very attentive and make you feel welcomed. The food is great, we had the bbq, the sauce is more on the sweeter side than savory, potato salad is very good, my favorite was the cornbread dressing, but we did enjoy the coleslaw with raisins, the rice was great too with a big portion. Will definitely return, due to we missed out on the stuffed turkey wings( get there early), can't wait to try them.
google avatar

Christine C.

Yelp
Every time I visit my family this is a must to stop. Food and staff are always wonderful. Never a complaint.
google avatar

Kimberly T.

Yelp
First time here! I gotta tell you Chile this is it!!! I'm from Houston and I bought more food to take home. I was NOT DISAPPOINTED! Customer service is on Point!

Jerrie J.

Yelp
Excellent food there. In fact, a visit there is the next best tasting foods as a home cooked meal.On a rating from 1-5 with 1 as poor and 5 as great well, I would rate a 5.

Kathy V.

Yelp
Should give this place more than 5 stars Awesome food and plenty of it Madonna and company are a jewel to have in Lafayette Enjoy when you go Trust me

Yelp
Laura's Two is an institution in the Lafayette Area. What they offer is soul food, southern cooking, and lots of it! This is not the place to visit for a light lunch. No, this is the place to visit if you are ready to get fed! Rice and gravy is a mainstay of almost all the dishes they serve, then we have the meats which are often placed on top of it. My favorite is clearly the stuffed turkey wings! These are falling apart tender, and have a savory spicy stuffing in the center. Chicken Fricassee is another excellent choice, and there are often fried chicken and catfish options. The sides are homestyle and filling, they include many southern favorites. They tend to the starchy, but that's all part of the charm. There are often great greens and green beans though. How does it work? Well you first walk in the door and check out the whiteboard menu while you wait in a short line by the entrance. The staff will then plate up your selections cafeteria style when it is your turn. You can take your lunch to go, or carry it into the seating area and dig in. I can assure you you will not leave hungry!

Tim A.

Yelp
Road trip stop for lunch in Lafayette. Lauras 2 did not disappoint. Pulling in I was a bit skeptical and inside was a bit rustic. The food was absolutely fantastic! We had the Shrimp and Grits with a fried catfish fillet. Both were excellently prepared and seasoned. Also tried the seafood okra which was good and not like anything I have had before. Lauras 2 is worth the stop in Lafayette.

Wayne A. J.

Yelp
Ridiculously...Good! I came all the way from Los Angeles today after seeing Laura's ll on TV several times. The restaurant was featured on the Food Network channel. Madonna, the owner and her staff was so comforting and extremely professional. The food taste great as advertised along with the speciality of the house which was "Baked stuffed turkey wings".The smothered cabbage was so good, if I was a Dealth Row inmate waiting for execution, I would ask for Laura's ll food as a last meal.
google avatar

Stephen R.

Yelp
First off, it's an odd setup.....walk in.....no signs, a lady is at a table in the walkway talking on the phone, I assume taking orders.....a customer waves us around the corner, there is a line..... So get in line I assume to order. She gets off the phone and takes someone's order and writes it on a togo box......someone else walks up to the table.......she quits taking orders and rings his check up......then turns and grabs two togo plates, puts them in a sack and calls out a name....all this while we are just standing there waiting to order......Really? Food is decent and the amount is good, but the confusion is unbelievable. They need a new approach.....we are not cattle... How bout set up someone to take orders, and then you pay.....then have someone else yell your name and you go to the pickup window? What a concept!
google avatar

Cionette B.

Yelp
Leave the french quarter for a day and go to Laura's Two in Lafayette. Must order STUFFED TURKEY WINGS, RED BEANS AND ROASTED POTATOES. I'll drive 2 hours just to have this meal. The food is exceptional! You'll never find anything like this in french quarter, I promise! Upon tasting the food, I ask myself these questions, "Where have I been?" "Why did I not come here sooner?" Service is excellent, hospitable employees!

Kina T.

Yelp
OMG definitely worth the drive! Food is so good and customer service is excellent! Ms. Madonna is the sweetest person, I just love her courtesy towards the customers! Will definitely be back!

Yelp
If your a fan of Louisiana Soul Food Plate lunches, then your in the right place. This is cooked by very special people that are connected to there ancestors in a way of shear grace. The food that comes from there is generations old in a new way by the kids and parents. When you leave there never hungry by the way, you've eaten something special. Thank you ladies for keeping the tradition alive and blessing us with it.

Eric E.

Yelp
If you go to Lafayette you must go there. The food is excellent and the people nicer. Go go go go. We have had the good fortune to eat around the world. This place is as unique and good as they come. Family run, nothing franchisee about the place and you will end up talking to the owner and other diners. If you miss it you have denied yourself a very special experience

Nekeidra F.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our time here. The food was good and fresh. Customer service was on point . We will be back . Until next time #GA

Caris H.

Yelp
This restaurant is amazing! We had the catfish and the stuffed turkey wing. The ladies were so friendly! They asked our names for our order and as we were leaving wished us a great day. The food was some of the best we've ever had. Our 9 year old shared with us and loved the food as well. We highly recommend

Mally A.

Yelp
Because we became victims of Southwest Airlines ineptitude after the Christmas Holidays, we were forced to drive home from Nashville, TN back to South Texas. We slept in NOLA and continued our road trip the following day. My husband and I had eaten food from here, but we had not been to the actual restaurant. OMG, where to start?? We were welcomed by the most scrumptious smell of delicious food AND an absolute doll of a hostess by the name of Madonna. We stood our place in line and when it was our turn to order, we asked her for suggestions as I cannot eat anything spicy (I know, strange place to eat at) and she recommended the fried chicken, red beans and rice and corn mock shoe. My husband ordered the Cajun stuffed Turkey wings (with gravy on the side) with roasted red potatoes and black beans. Our meal was out of this world. We loved that we were served on styrofoam plates as the servings were huge, we definitely had leftovers. Hands down best place to try if you are in the area , but go early because food runs out FAST. The dining room was small and quaint and VERY CLEAN as were the restrooms. As we were leaving we were told no tips were accepted, mind you, we would not have minded leaving one at all. The kitchen staff also were great and wished us a safe trip and asked us to visit again!! We will!! Do not miss the chance to eat here!!

Michael L.

Yelp
I love their food and hospitality. There very kind as well. They even help me receive a lot of clients when I left my business cards, cause I'm a barber. Thanks guys!

Yelp
My wife suggested making a lunch stop to Laura's Two and I'm glad we did! Upon entering I could feel this was going to be a real treat. My wife ordered fried chicken and white beans, I went for their (famous) Turkey wing and white beans/greens. Oh boy, it was absolutely delicious and I struggled to even come close to finishing the meal as there was so much food! If you are on University Av, you must stop in. Regardless of where you are in town, drop in! I'm heading back for sure!!
google avatar

Christina P.

Yelp
Lorrrrttt have mercy on your soul if you've never had their food before! I came in on a whim in between classes and it was right around lunch, there wasn't that much of a line but the smell just drawers everyone in! I had the stuffed turkey wing greens and beans boy boy oh y'all can't tell you how this food hit my soul and made me so happy. Please do yourself a favor and swing on by, that babe daily specials and I'm sure anything you get here will be finger licking good!

Valerie G.

Yelp
The food was really good and had a lot of flavor hands down best food I had so far in Lafayette

Clayton L.

Yelp
Had luch here on yesterday 2/3/5/2022. Ordered the stuffed turkey wing, it was amazingly good. I do plan on returning when in the area.

Yelp
The stuffed Turkey wings and dressing. I saw and I loved it! Will get there to try it!

Yelp
Amazing food, service...Madonna is one of a kind! A total hidden gem! Will visit soon! Much love from Texas!

Yelp
If you want home cooking similar to your grandmother's kitchen, this is the place for you. Authentic creole cuisine served in a plate lunch, at a fair price. This establishment is a local favorite and I suggest you get there early to determine the day's special. I will be stopping for lunch at Laura's II every chance I get.
google avatar

Brittney P.

Yelp
Grandma's homemade soul food in a restaurant just about sums it up. Even the dining area looks really old school with long wooden tables and chairs. Unfortunately, it lacked any natural light whatsoever that I don't like, which I know sounds picky but it's just my opinion. As for the food, it was tasty for the most part. Definitely tasted like food my mom or grandma would make at home. The time I went though, the white beans were super salty. I know it would've tasted great if it wasn't and I'm inclined to believe it was only a mistake with that batch. The value is in line with other plate lunch style restaurants ($10-12).

Mary Lou L.

Yelp
First time customer. When I walked thru the door; the smell was amazing. The food choices were plentiful. Everyone working were in sync; efficient & with purposeful movement. It was fantastic to witness people so dedicated to their work. You have an amazing staff. The prices were reasonable & the food portions were plentiful. Most importantly, it tasted great. Awesome job everyone.
google avatar

Clarissa J.

Yelp
The portions are enough for two people. I was full of a half of a turkey wing. Food is very flavorful. Lots of seasonings. I think the veggies are a little over cooked not to my liking. But I still think they are a 5 very friendly staff. If you're visiting and are from out of town you want to make this one of the places to visit.
google avatar

Sammie T.

Yelp
First off, I'm not a soul food kind of person but their stuffed turkey here is delicious. The turkey was tender and did not taste fattening at all. I actually finished my entire turkey even though it was a large portion! I also got corn and coleslaw as my sides and they were both on point. Killed it. We're from out of town and my husband must have Laura's when we're in town (he likes their fried porkchop & red beans). The reason I give four stars instead of five is because I would like more entree options to choose from.
google avatar

Yelp
I go for Wednesday and Sunday plate lunches. It's the BBQ ribs that get me every time! This place is down home cookin!
