Le Levain - Review - Trastevere - Rome - The Infatuation

"If you wake up in Trastevere to your stomach growling louder than a Roman gladiator, head to Le Levain for the neighborhood’s best pastries. Their flaky croissants and decadent chocolate tarts are good, but their tortino with ricotta and chocolate takes the cake (literally). Picture a crisp, cakey crust cradling creamy ricotta, studded with dark chocolate and chopped walnuts. And yes it’s just as good as it sounds. They also serve tea, coffee, and savory items like baguette sandwiches and delicious, cheesy pizzette topped with fresh basil. Enjoy everything at one of the few small tables inside, or try and snag one of the two counters outside the restaurant." - Annie Replogle

The olive bread has got to be one of the best/tastiest breads I’ve ever eaten - and I love bread! Soft, fluffy and crunchy in all the right places and filled with loads of nice olives. Baked fresh on site this morning as was still warm when we picked it up. It’s more expensive than your usual breads at €5 for half/€10 for a whole loaf, but well worth it I think, delicious! The pastries looked great too, so I’ll be coming back to try those another time!

Google
French bakery in Rome. The place is not to big, but maybe just enough for the sitting area. The breads were delicious as we expect from French bakery.

Google
After glowing reviews of there quiche. I ordered both florantine and veggitable. Maybe vegetables are out of season this early in june but I received an egg and pea quiche. Not exactly bad just not the same veggie quiche that got the rave reviews! Very disappointed. I ordered many other things. They all look consistent with the photos mostly. Some were much smaller and some larger.

Google
It was really crowded and they have very few tables. But its all worth the wait, well prepared ans tastes so good. Only issue is that, for coffees its vending machine. Service was quick and the staff was really friendly.

Very tasty pastry and sandwiches. Perfect for a breakfast. Mini pizza were our favourites and croissants but everything we tried was just great. We ate here in every morning durring our stay in Trastevere. ❤️🩵🩷

Google
Great coffee shop with delicious pastries, though on the pricey side, the quality makes it worth it. The self-service coffee setup is a unique touch, but the tall tables and stools in the seating area weren’t the most comfortable. A more relaxed seating option would improve the experience. Still, a solid spot for a coffee and a sweet treat✨🩷

Google
The atmosphere: hectic cafe, laptop friendly, fast pace, great for busy mornings/afternoons. The food: big selection of sweet and savoury bites, very tasty! From menu: we had prosciutto sandwich and mortadella sandwich, both very tasty, great combination, they bake their own bread, fresh and crispy. Desert: we had lemon tart and canolle, both very tasty, especially the lemon tarte. Coffee: great selection of filtered coffee, high quality coffee beans. We can only highly recommend this place, and will definitely be back once in Rome

The pastries were beautiful, the croissant crema was a firm favourite among my group

Yelp
Excellent French bakery with croissants, tarts, and desserts. The ham and cheese croissant is especially good. I almost wanted to get two, until I got distracted with their large display case of colorful desserts. P.S. I did end up getting dessert for breakfast...

Yelp
Packed with locals and tourists. Just grabbed a croissant to go. There was a little line but moved quickly, they are hustling. Love the serve yourself espresso machine situation. I'd go back to try everything in the case. Everything looked beautiful. If I needed bread this looks to be a fantastic bakery option in the area. Nice enough service.

Yelp
a French bakery. Eclairs. Croque monsieurs. Gallette du Roi in January actual butter croissants

Henrieta P.

Yelp
Cozy place with delicious pastries! Nice service. We tried croissants, one of the best tried in Rome.

Yelp
Cute little bakery. We had quiche and pastries. Everything was divine! We are going back tomorrow before we leave Rome. Yes it was that good!

Yelp
Solid breakfast before exploring trastavere. We had a pistachio croissant, the cropizza, a Croque monsier, and a quiche Lorraine - the quiche is the only one I wouldn't order again. Tons of options, friendly staff, would return for sure.

Yelp
Upon return to Le Levain in Trastevere, I find this shop has grown so tremendously. The pastries are wver so plentiful and there are those luscious desserts. It's Christmas holiday time again so the pastry chef is getting his bouche de noels lined up for the hoards of traditionalists (French pastry lovers). The shop is stuffed with goodies and not only good to look at but also to taste. As always, calorie watching is not happening. Not when the pastries are saving me some calories by being made "light" (flavorful and yet not as much butter)! Every visit to Le Levain is a treat! Treat yourself today and make your way to Trastevere.

Yelp
Delicious and friendly. The Pain au chocolat was delicious! And so were the other pastries we were steered to.

Yelp
As of today they've removed their stools (due to some law/ordinance issue?) so it's standing only at the tables. But the tarts and sandwiches are still beautiful! I got the passion fruit tart, which was wonderful with its flavor and just the right amount of sour. There's supposed to be spicy banana paste below the passion fruit but it didn't taste spicy. For savory I had a chicken salad sandwich on carbon bread. I loved the bread! Unfortunately I found an egg shell in it, but accidents happen! Would like to go back for lunch again someday.

Yelp
Being completely sore from walking 10-16K a day for a week, we weren't up for walking another 30 for a pastry. We ordered to my airbnb from the Glovo and used the free promo code for a first time delivery FIRSTDAY. The delivery was here in 30 minutes. 3 stars for the Croissant 4.5 for the Baguette. While the driver was there right at opening on Saturday morning they were out of pain au chocolate. I'm not an an expert judge of croissants, I'm more of a amateur expert based on trying hundreds in Paris and beyond along with taking the croissant class at Le Cordon Bleu Paris. I found this croissant to be more bready and lacked the slightly sweet buttery taste. Good color but the flakiness was not as I have come to love in a perfect pastry. It missed that loud crunch. Wouldn't hold a candle to those in Paris, sadly. But it's Italy, and there is so much of the best pasta, pizza, gelato, and coffee that other counties can't come close to! The Baguette was really good! A slight sourdough taste, good crunch, slightly warm. More of a Italian version than French but I'd go back or have delivered again. A perfect all-butter croissant, or croissant au beurre should be the right balance of distinct thin flaky layers and a melt-in-your-mouth buttery, a hint of sweet and slightly chewy dough. It should be uniform in shape, cooked until golden and have a slight sheen with a touch of salt. Lastly, it should make a loud crunch as you bite into it leaving crumbs on your face and clothing. I've found that I can really see how the croissant will taste from a good photo. If available.

Yelp
As an American student in Rome, I've been looking for a good cafe where I can study or relax for a while. I finally found this in Le Levain. It can get very full on the weekend, but during the week it's got a slow enough trickle of customers that I haven't felt rushed or crowded. The croissants are very reasonably priced and taste fantastic. Getting your food is quick, and they have an easy self-service machine for cappuccino and espresso. Not to mention there's great wifi, and it's free. This place has quickly become a favorite for me- I'd highly recommend it.

Yelp
Great place! Good cappuccinos (even though the machine is self serving). Their pastries and sandwiches are freshly baked every day and are very delicious. This place is great for dessert (macaroons, eclairs, etc.).
google avatar

Chloe K.

Yelp
Fantastic pastries! Good coffee from a self-service automated cappuccino machine. A must do for your morning if you're staying in an apartment in the area.

Lisa V.

Yelp
Stop here for a quick bite - great sandwiches, unusual bottled flavored teas & pastries. We enjoyed their quiche. Delicious!

Yelp
It's a pretty little French pastry shop in Rome. Also featured in Culture Trip's top dessert shops to visit while in Rome. I would, have to say, tho, that that despite their beautiful display of baked goods, this was my least favorite shop. You see, my favorite cake is carrot cake and I had to order it...unfortunately, the cake came out a bit dry for me and the icing was not made of cream cheese (please insert sad face). That said, this shop is known for having beautifully decorated cakes and pastries as well as authentic French baguettes. I do recommend you to check the shop out and see for yourself

Yelp
This place is popping in the morning - came here on a Sunday at 9:10am and there's already a lot of people there. Seating is limited. Got the pear danish and, mini pizza, and croissant - delicious! They have fancy pastries like macarons, tarts, and mini cakes along with sandwiches which we didn't get a chance to try. You also have to make your own coffee and there's always a huge line for the machine. Highly recommend.

Yelp
If you live in Rome and you haven't been here, you are missing out. Believe me when I tell you that I eat a lot of bread and pastries - bread is my favourite food. This place has it all. It's got beautiful dainty patisserie, delicious croissants and other pastries and it's got excellent sourdough bread that they make sandwiches with. Highlight is this mini 'cropizza' which is basically and Italian cronut and is super tasty. The coffee could be improved but was still pretty decent. This is a very local place and when we went on a Sunday at 11am it was full of locals buying bread and dessert for their lunch. It's down a side street so you may need to look up directions, but go! Go as soon as you can.

Yelp
Great for breakfast! Croissants were amazingly flaky and great coffee to go! Great for early morning food on the go! Highly recommend

J. D.

Yelp
Excellent bread, croissants, sandwiches etc. Food is super fresh, moist, flaky, flavorful. Good selection. Very limited indoor seating. No outdoor seating. It's really more of a grab-n-go place. They seem to do a fair amount of catering and/or group pre-orders, ready for pickup and to go. They sell espresso coffee but it's from a automated, self-serve machine. Small selection of juices in a fridge. Nice staff.

Yelp
Both our Airbnb host and friends who recently visited Rome recommended Le Levain, best choice ever. Delicious pastries that were very reasonable in price. My favs were the croissants, that pistachio filling was delicious and their fruit filled pastries were also amazing! So many amazing desserts, they had this amazing profiteroles that were filled with cream, and their bread was so soft on the inside! We will probably stop by for pastries every morning on our trip, lol. Yum!!!

Yelp
Excellent bakery and cafe in Trastevere with wonderful pastries and homemade sandwiches....stopped by during a midday break and ordered a smoked salmon sandwich on brioche that was simply out of this world. Very good service and English speaking staff.

Yelp
Delicious pastries and free WiFi made this a great morning stop before getting the day started

Yelp
Omg, the pizza croissant. One of the tastiest small bites I've had in Italy so far. Get at least 3, I only got 1 to share and regretted it after one bite. It was so hard to share, I wanted to eat it all! Croissant was pretty flaky but could use more flavor. I'm spoiled from eating the best croissants in Paris though so this was pretty good for Italy. Sandwich was proscuitto, mozzerella, tomato and pesto, very light and tasty although wish there were more filling to bread ratio. Service was very friendly and the girl was extremely patient with us. We essentially were like little kids in a candy shop and kept pointing at things and adding things to buy, super annoying I know.

Phil G.

Yelp
Le Levain has the best croissants, cornetti and baked goods in Trastevere. Plus terrific sandwiches ( try the mini BBQ if you get the chance - delightful). And their crema croissants fresh from the oven are mouthwateringly delicious. Great staff and prices too.

Yelp
A cute pasticerria in the heart of Trastevere. Good prices, delicious pastries and a wonderful place to start the day!

Yelp
Absolutely delicious croissant and pastries!

Yelp
Perfect café. Wish we could teleport here every morning from the states. Figs in beautiful bite-size sandwiches, incredible bread/baguettes, and the freshness level is out-of-this world (to me, prly bc I'm from ame

Yelp
Well deserved five stars! I went in on a sunday morning just before the rush of people came in so I managed to snag a seat! This place gets busy so be ready to eat on the go. I got the "special" which was a prosciutto and fig baguette sandwich. Hands down, this was the best thing I've eaten in Rome so far and I've gone to all the hyped up pasta and pizza places. After devouring the sandwich, I got their lemon cake and HOLY COW it is so damn good. It's tart and sweet and just everything you could wish for as a dessert. I'm so glad I stumbled into this place while exploring Trastevere, I highly recommend this place!
google avatar

Yelp
The coffee eclairs are AMAZING. Litrelly the best thing I had in Rome. Coffee is great too!
google avatar

KR T.

Yelp
Close to the Vatican so good place to stop for water and snacks. Food was good we had pasta carbonara and lasagna which my husband loved. Staff was rude except for the front cashier. Might be a cultural thing or mayybe our serving staff was just havIng an off day.
google avatar

Laura R.

Yelp
Although this bakery is filled with traditional French pastries rather than classically Roman sweets, I highly recommend stopping by here if you are in the Trastevere neighborhood. Our apartment was just a stone's throw from here and so we came here regularly for breakfast. We also purchased an absolutely delicious "pandoro" for our Christmas festivities from here. It was 20 euro, but it was perhaps the best "pandoro" I have ever had in my life! Also, the seating is limited, but if there is a spot, take it and treat yourself to a fabulous cup of coffee while doing some really satisfying people-watching!
google avatar

Yelp
Beaaautiful bakery and cafe with delicious quiches and paninis and all lovely baked goods and pastries you could wish for!! Adorable girl working the front, so cheery. Passionfruit and chocolate macaron - the best! Mmmm

Yelp
Wow! What an amazing selection with quality and reasonable prices!! This is one if the best patisserie I've tried...ever! And that includes ones I've tried in France, Japan and the US. This place is simply amazing!!! Everything I got was simply mind-blowing. Looking forward to trying it again!

Yelp
Great cappuccino & croissants. My daughter loved the cherry pie and mom loved the biscotti.
google avatar

Brian J.

Yelp
Wonderful bakery with fresh breads and pastries. Tried a couple desserts which were fantastic. Definitely worth stopping in while in Trastevere.

Monica J.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick breakfast. I had the chocolate croissant and cappuccino. They don't make coffee for you - there is a coffee machine in the corner where you make your own coffee. The chocolate croissant was nice. I felt that the amount of chocolate was a little bit more than I usually like. (I'm picky for chocolate croissant)

Yelp
SO GOOD. The pastries and the cappuccinos are both outstanding. I would recommend the quiche and the sfoglia alla mele. We ate breakfast here every morning in Rome and we often went back in the afternoon for a treat. Will definitely return on our next visit!

Cheryl F.

Yelp
Great spot for a quick breakfast. Especially loved the salmon croissant sandwich. Cappuccinos were really good too!

Netaniel N.

Yelp
Excellent quiche, desserts (Moana), chicken salad baguette! Clean restaurant and friendly staff! Thank you

Anne C.

Yelp
Omg there Moana dessert and macaroons are sooooo delicious! I would definitely stop by here if you're looking for a good dessert spot me and my boyfriend definitely enjoyed it.
