Yelp
It is the best bakery in the Cleveland The pastries are so good. Try to tell things not one thing bad. This place is definitely five stars

Yelp
I first visited in February 2024 then I visited again in June 2024. During both visits, I wanted to try a sandwich but I couldn't because, the first time, they didn't have a sandwich that I liked (only 2 options) and the second time, the sandwich that I wanted had cheese in it and I don't like cheese. SERVICE -- Warm and friendly. PASTRIES: I've tried just a plain croissant (3/5) and a blueberry cruffin (3.5/5). The croissant was fine because I didn't get a chance to take it home to warm it up and add a little butter in it so when I ate it at the bakery, it tasted okay and a bit dry. The blueberry cruffin was good but it had too much jam in it for my taste. I can't wait to try other pastries. They are known for their breads so I'll have to come visit again. The only issue is that they only have 2 sandwiches on their menu that rotates every few weeks. I love that they have different sandwich options but you may not like any of the 2 available options. So, perhaps just buy some bread and take it home to make your own sandwich. TIP -- I recommend getting here earlier so that you get fresher pastries. I will definitely visit again especially after a lovely encounter with a young Christian couple in June 2024. **** GOAL of 150 reviews in 2024 - 56/150 total reviews in 2024 - 706 total overall Yelp reviews - Reviewed on 6 July 2024

Yelp
Leavened is another spot that has been on our list to visit. It is a cute little bakery in Tremont with both indoor and outdoor seating. Leavened seemed to have an extensive variety of breads and some that may be hard to find. They have some specialty breads they on serve on certain days, so be sure to check the website. We order drip coffee, tomato soup, a cinnamon bun and a loaf of black bread. I was intrigued by the black bread and it was worth the purchase. It was perfect to dip in the tomato soup. It was so good that was what i did when I got home as well. The black bread does have a strong flavor and may not be for everyone. I loved it. My husband did not. The cinnamon bun was very good and big enough for two people. The service was good and there was a steady stream of people ordering. They offer a few outdoor table and they were all full. Parking is primarily on the street and was not too difficult to find. I would like to go back and try more of their bread options.

Yelp
Leavened offers an exceptional array of high quality breads and baked goods. Besides the breads, only the chocolate chip rye cookie is vegan (but this is a lovely combination that you should definitely try)! They offer oat milk alternatives for all of their coffees. The shop is perfect for studying or meeting friends and the staff is kind and clearly passionate about their shop.

Yelp
Lovely bakery and coffee shop in the neighborhood. The interior design is clean with lots of natural lighting, a wonderful place to study or hang out. I tried three pastries: the double chocolate chip rye cookie was delicious, more like a brownie than a cookie. It was somewhat dry but I liked the bread-like texture. The chocolate chips were abundant and rich. The cinnamon roll was huge and pretty good. There's no cream cheese frosting. Orange citrus taste is a bit strong so this would be great if you're into that. Chocolate croissant was slightly disappointing as there was very little chocolate inside: two thin slivers. It was like a thin Hershey's bar inside an otherwise great croissant. The croissant was fluffy and light and buttery.

Yelp
While in town I was looking for some great Croissants and Pastries. I came across Leavened. We stopped in a little before closing. We were pleasantly surprised to find out we had stopped in during Happy Hour. A lot of the pastries we were ordering were $2.00. It was a wonderful thing since it allowed for us to try even more items. We had a bite or two of a few things and then went back for our favorites . To start with, we ordered a Cruffin, a Cinnamon Bun, and an Almond Croissant. They Almond Croissant, while flaky and buttery, was underwhelming. I expected, and hoped for more almond flavor as opposed to chopped almonds. Usually Almond Croissants are one of my favorites. This wasn't. It was good though So, I went and ordered the Coffee Cake Croissant. It had a much better filling with a nice cinnamon flavor but still didn't blow my mind. The Cinnamon Bun, had tons of Cinnamon flavor. However; it wasn't soft. Granted it was towards the end of the day maybe that was why. It was hard, dense and chewy. I took it home and warmed it up hoping that would help but really there wasn't much improvement. Not sure if this is normally how it is. The Cruffin....... Unfortunately, I can't have a lot of peach and that was the flavor. I did take a few bites and it was heavenly. The pastry was flaky and tender and the jam was amazing. I would eat these everyday if I could. The Croissants are buttery and flaky and the Cruffin will make me return.

Yelp
Finally. I finally was able to stop in to Leavened and left with 2 hefty bags of delicious baked goods. I'm still in the process of trying everything, but surely didn't want to forget to write this review! I was greeted immediately and the gals at the counter were super friendly. Welcomed me in for my first visit. The space is lovely and I wish I had time to enjoy a treat there with a cup of tea. Most bakeries like this do not have done in space, I was quite impressed with this. They even had some detail items! I dug into my Cruffin as soon as I got back to my office. What is a Cruffin? It's shaped like a muffin Flaky like a croissant Tastes like heaven. Mine was filled with raspberry and there was maybe a hint of cinnamon in the filling? It was the perfect complement to the expertly crafted flaky layers. I tried to eat with two forks to keep my fingers clean, but that didn't work. So delicious The pizza roll was outstanding. Didn't need any marinara to dip, just pull apart and enjoy. Not too greasy, which is magical I had the cheddar scallion scone for breakfast the next morning. I was afraid it would dry out overnight, but it was tender and tasty. Great balance of flavors and the texture was excellent. I can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Pastries where delicious had a cinnamon roll and blueberry muffins it was quick and out wish they had the ability to warm your pastry but per employee they are too busy for that request. Nobody got time for that!

Annie G.

Yelp
Two words: pepperoni roll. Everything they make is so fresh and nasty. I prefer the baked goods to the coffee but they do a good job with that too. They have pizzas on Fridays and a few menu items for lunch like soups and sandwiches. It smells so good from all the fresh baking. Staff are always friendly when they greet you. There's about 6-8 tables. Nice spot to meet for coffee or do some work for a few hours.

Yelp
This place has a pretty small menu but a strong lineup of pastries and some fantastic looking loafs. A baguette connoisseur acquired a loaf and although it was good bread she claimed it didn't quite stack up to the ones in France (but she clearly has high standards). Enjoyed some coffee drinks and a hand pie before a hike and it was lovely. Would have been nice to have a few more breakfast sandwich options available but they clearly are more of a great pitstop for a coffee and a treat then full blown breakfast.

Yelp
This place gets busy fast! On a Sunday morning, there seemed to be many regulars who come here just to buy a loaf of freshly made bread. This is what they are really known for as a bakery. Buy any loaf and they will slice it for you too. Anxiously waiting in a long line, I was thinking of what to order. If you can, try to go up to the front and take a photo of the baked items they offer and review it while you're in line. This will make you less frazzled leading up to the register when there is a long line behind you. After much debate, I settled on a 'pineapple strawberry hand pie with cardamom' for $5.50. This is a large pop tart looking pastry with the flakiness of a croissant. Let me just say this was outstanding! Big enough to share between two people and paired well with our hot drip coffee in the morning. Seating is spread out among a few small tables against wall booths, 1-2 large tables, and more casual high chairs against the windows facing outside. I did see one person working on a laptop, so they may have power plugs too. Seems like most were getting baked goods to go. They have free Wi-Fi and a restroom too. You will need to look for street parking. Generally, this can be found in the street behind the bakery. Hope to come back and try the popular Danish twist (made from the same flakey croissant dough) and cinammon rolls.

Yelp
Gorgeous. Delicious. Must go again. Light floods this cafe. It's beautiful. I've been lucky to get a free baguette with a pastry purchase at the end of the week near closing time. The pastries here are fantastic. Not too sweet. Croissant was super flakey. The chocolate rye cookie was the best chocolate cookie I've had in a long long time. Parking is limited.

Brooke A.

Yelp
Quick place to stop in for coffee and pastries or bread. Quick service and good amount of seating options. However the biggest down side was both the pastries were cold and we felt that both would have been better if kept warm or served warm.

Beth M.

Yelp
The pizza . Wow. This is real pizza- good dough (of course, wasn't really worried about that), but also delicious tangy tomato sauce and quality cheese. Crispy charred crust. Rivals anything authentically Italian that we have in Cleveland, and we have some really good pizza joints.

Daniel A.

Yelp
Unfortunately I did not get a chance to eat the food here. What I did get was a no warning closed restaurant without updates to the website, Yelp, not the door when I approached. The phone had no message for the closure, and as a fellow entrepreneur having ran a restaurant myself this is extremely poor business practice. I understand the need for time off while family run or otherwise smaller in size business but this is poor business practices overall. It really looked good, and food from pictures and reviews really seemed great.

Phil B.

Yelp
Delicious. Had cinnamon roll was great. Also got loaf of sourdoughbread was perfect.

Alicia B.

Yelp
The most delicious pastries I've ever tasted! Truly! The cardamom one is the best pastry I've ever had. Highly recommend.

Beth S.

Yelp
Five stars for the blueberry chamomile cruffin! Craveworthy. The "cow's milk latte"--where I'm from they just call that a "latte" (tee-hee!) was also very good.

Melissa P.

Yelp
The soup and sandwich was phenomenal. The vibe in this coffee shop was so quiet and great for a study session or getting work done. I didn't eat in but the staff was very helpful.

Glenn J.

Yelp
Nice and cozy atmosphere. Welcoming and friendly service. The cheddar scone is the best savory scone I've tasted in a very long time. Smooth espresso in the cappuccino. I highly recommend!

Natalya K.

Yelp
Ordered the cherry almond sourdough and was greatly disappointed to find there was hardly any cherries. Hopefully it was a fluke but with so many other, better bakeries in the area I will not be returning to find out.

Midhat P.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing place. Quiet, classy, and great to do work. The pastries and breads are all really good - there's nothing I wouldn't recommend.

Ailin J.

Yelp
Best thing I've had here is the Pierogi hand pie! All of their hand pies have been very tasty and so big and filling!! I like that you can see the variety of pastries easily in their glass display. Take a look at their menu for daily specials like pizza focaccia etc!

Allison O.

Yelp
A hidden gem bakery/cafe/study spot in Tremont! I was always delighted to try a new sweet or savory treat with each visit. The drink menu is simple and well-made; the mocha was delicious. The quality and rotating diversity of the baked goods is excellent! Highly recommend the cinnamon bun, the flaky fruity cruffin, and the savory scones (which are not dry!) The atmosphere itself is tranquil with working folks and outlets near most tables. On one day a soft instrumental lofi mix was playing; on another day it was a bit louder and pop-ish but overall would definitely study here all day!

Ally K.

Yelp
Best bakery in town IMO. Every damn sandwich I've had here has had wonderful flavor combinations. It's the only place I can walk in and pick a sandwich at random and know that I won't be disappointed. The coffee, the variety of croissants, and seasonal tarts have always been great as well.

Rachel D.

Yelp
Lovely little bakery shop to work and study in! Tons of baked goods and sweets! Very reasonable prices and the staff are super nice too! I decided to get a ham and cheese croissant along with an inched vanilla espresso. The espresso was a bit bitter, which is expected, but the cream and sugar offered at the coffee bar helped me make it taste a bit better. On the other hand, the ham and cheese croissant was mouthwatering deliciousness! I'm a sucker for croissants, but this one was from another planet! It melted in my mouth with a soft and textured taste! Loved it!! While I was here I worked on some readings I had to do. They offered WiFi, and a variety of different sitting areas. On my way out the door I did grab another drink, and Iced Hibiscus Berry Tea- delicious as well!! Hopefully more iced teas are to come in the future as this is the only one they currently offer. Definitely going to be back again soon!

Yelp
Yummm. We were here for an early lunch on a rainy day and left with full hearts and stomachs. They had a charred tomato soup on special (that wasn't cream-based ) and it was fantastic. The eponymous char shone through, it was an ideal temperature, and it hit the spot given the weather. It also happened to pair ideally with the Mexican street corn focaccia we ordered, which was one of the most special pieces of bread that we've ever had: perfectly chewy and topped with all the fixin's that you could ask for. HOWEVER, it should have been served with a steak knife or some other kind of serrated bread-cutting utensils because we had to hack at it and use our hands and it ended up getting messy. Just go to Ikea and buy some cheap ones! Your customers would appreciate it... The guava, etc. hand pie seemed to have had too much filling spill out, but we enjoyed the flavors and the flakiness of the crust. Three thumbs up all around for the vegan rye double chocolate cookie. The coffee, iced tea, and hot chocolate were fine. The staff was pleasant but not overtly so, and the ambience is bright and open without insanely loud music. Overall, we had a wonderful meal and easy morning here--a great bakery stop if you're in "the land."

Yelp
Don't be fooled - Leavened may look like the latest trendy cafe in Tremont, but it's actually an elaborately aesthetic front for dealing one of the most addictive substances known to man - carbs. Complete with floor to ceiling windows, trendy light fixtures and stylish seating options, how more tempting could it be? The luxury apartment Tappan building is a fitting backdrop for Leavened with its modern, vibrant energy. The design of the bakery itself is simple - a single high-ceiling room with an array of choice seating and ample natural lighting. Tables are appropriately socially distanced but sound reflects easily and you'll definitely hear every order that people are placing even when you're sitting at the furthest possible table. Their music is chill, but I recommend headphones if you need focus. The cushioned shelf-style bench offers some outlets if you plan on being here a while and yes, Wi-Fi is available. Coffee options are simple so as not to detract from the true star of the show. They only brew one medium roast, with espresso variations offered. There's a different daily soup and sandwich and just about every fifteen minutes you'll hear someone call in asking what the special is. There's a limited supply of sandos starting at 11 AM, and they are locked and LOADED with goodness. Now, can we talk bread? Made fresh, every day, with rotating creations? The perfectly oily Rosemary Foccacia slabs you can tear apart on the drive home? The shareable Epi chains made for dinner parties? The Hand Pies sized for bearpaws? Or the flaky Mobius swirls of the Danish Twists? I could go on - or you could just go in and taste for yourself.

Yelp
Love this place. Delicious, flaky pastry. The lemon jam cruffin was wonderful. Pierogi hand pie was well seasoned (sad they were out of peach). Street parking was easy on Sunday afternoon. There are tables to sit and hang out. Will definitely be back when we visit Cleveland again.

Yelp
My sister and I are big fans of Fox in the Snow in Columbus. She had recently been to this place and wanted me to try it out on my next visit to CLE (I live in Arizona now). I had looked at their pics on Yelp and was salivating over the delectable pastries. I knew I had to try a chocolate croissant- one of my favorite treats! We went on a Thursday morning and it wasn't busy at all. My eyes were bigger than my stomach and I ended up getting multiple items: a chocolate croissant, a peaches & cream hand-pie and a scone. I also ordered a latte and my sister and I took a seat outside with my baby niece. It was a beautiful summer day! Although I appreciated having an array of treats to choose from, none of these were winners for me. The scone ( I believe it was some type of cheddar scallion) was a solid choice. But the chocolate croissant barely had any chocolate in it. And the same for the peaches and cream hand-pie. It could have used much more cream in it! All told, Leavened didn't really meet the high expectations I had for it. However, my sister and bro-in-law really seem to like this place, so I'll be sure to give it another shot next time I'm in town.

René B.

Yelp
Beautiful and delicious pastries! We shared an assortment with a small group which was fun to try so many options Disappointed they did not have decaf coffee.

Josephine B.

Yelp
Love everything about it! Pastries was so good. Good strong coffee just I like. Will definitely come back. I highly recommend to family and friends.

Meghana S.

Yelp
If you're a bread lover this is your bread heaven! A self proclaimed bread lover I loved their food! They have daily specials and today it was curry squash focaccia and tomato soup! We also ordered a blackberry peach jam cruffin and loved it so much we got a couple more to go! Apart from the stuffed bread variety like hand pies, croissants, cruffins and focaccia they had loaves and baguettes too! If I had to nitpick anything - I'd say I wish my focaccia was warm or if they had heated it a bit but overall love the food might be coming back for more!

Leslie H.

Yelp
Yet another absolute gem of a place to add to my list on the West Side! I can't believe this bakery doesn't already have more hype (though it is a bit on the newer side) because it now probably ranks in my top 3 favorite CLE establishments. Their baked goods are unique and absolutely delicious! They offer a rotating selection of sweet and savory croissants, out of which I've tried the mushroom onion and blackberry lavender -- both well crafted but the savory one is definitely the standout. There's also a constantly changing selection of scones and hand pies with mouthwatering filling combos that are incredible as well. As someone who has always found scones dry and unappealing, I was actually blown away by the flaky soft texture of the cheddar scallion one and it only took one bite for me to declare myself a scone lover. But anyone who comes here simply must try their freshly baked focaccia - seriously amazing!! There are always a couple daily bread specials; I've had the caramelized gorgonzola and pimento cheese spinach focaccia, which were both to die for~ This is a place that I will be trekking over to Tremont to frequent as often as I can -- solid five stars!!

Matt C.

Yelp
Have been a regular bakery customer but recently tried the Charred Tomato Soup and the Friday afternoon pizza - all very good - it is such a great place, staff, quality, variety and vibe.

Jeremy T.

Yelp
Was in the neighborhood and stumbled in on pizza day ! One of the best slices of pickled veggie pizza I've ever had. That dough !

Hannah C.

Yelp
The quintessential neighborhood bakery! Cute ambiance and lovely clear display that lets you see all the day's offerings. Their sourdough is very reasonably priced and delicious (crackly crust, crumb is soft and airy with great chew). I also tried their lemon curd (house made!) breakfast pastry that was generously stuffed and perfect for sharing. Also certainly worth mentioning are the friendly stafd

Sarah G.

Yelp
We enjoy leavened. The vibes are chill. Good croissants and pastries. Love the breads. Coffee was okay. We just didn't love the focaccia, it was kind of sour, possibly a sourdough focaccia, but I don't remember it labeled that way.

Irene C.

Yelp
Leavened is a cute bakery located within a luxury apartment complex. There's plenty of seating area and outlets for working! The bakery items themselves are delicious, but it seems like they were always prepared several hours before, and have always been cold the multiple times I've visited. I sometimes see them bringing in new trays of freshly baked goods, but I don't think the rotation is as quick as I wish they were

Laura F.

Yelp
What a freaking cute little coffee shop! We literally stumbled upon this place, I had never heard of it before. It is bright, shiny, clean and worth the trip. Their cappuccino is amazing we also ordered cookies and got some bread to go. The people were really friendly. I highly recommend place

Lauren B.

Yelp
Great cafe with good pastries! The ambiance is great and comfortable with tables and the people are very nice

N Y.

Yelp
Great bread pastries and coffee. I especially LOVE their various savory options. Wonderful vibe & staff.

Danielle P.

Yelp
Amazing pastries and espresso! The cardamom bun and every single cookie is delicious.

Hallie M.

Yelp
Leavened has been on my list as a cinnamon bun fanatic! I enjoyed a cinnamon bun and a latte and was able to grab a table to sit with a friend. The latte was fine, but the bun was the main event, and I'd give it a 4/5 and that's just because I prefer them with some frosting on top. It was huge, fluffy, and perfectly sticky with cinnamon and sugar. There's decent street parking and ample seating inside, and I'd come again to try their other pastries and breads.

Natasha G.

Yelp
Very clean and modern cafe and bakery. They are still following Covid protocol so they have a one way in and one way out. There is no indoor seating for the moment, so I couldn't take advantage of the minimal and modern vibe. From the looks of it, there is stand up counters that line the windows, two lounge chairs centered in front of the pick up counter, and then lots of stacks chairs to accompany the square wood tables. Friendly staff is always a plus and she was patient as well. Picked up their famous delectables, their cinnamon bun and their cardamom bun. Soft, sticky and perfectly spiced. The cardamom bun had just the right amount of flakiness. Grabbed two chocolate chip cookies for my boys and they loved them. Had a chance to take a bite, and it's thick, crispy on the edges, and soft and gooey in the center. I wished they were warmed up for us.

Alyssa L.

Yelp
Situated right under an apartment building and down the street from Tremont Taphouse, this new artisan bakery is a must see! Delicious bread, pastries, sandwiches, soups and plenty of caffeine fueled beverages to make your morning/ early afternoon better. I can personally attest to how yummy their pepperoni rolls, baguettes, croissants, and sandwiches are and look forward to coming back for more. While there is no seating inside (due to Covid) there are a couple tables outside. Can't wait to go back!

Giavanna R.

Yelp
I dont know what these negative reviews are about. I thought this place was amazinggg! Double choc chip rye cookie might be the best cookie I've ever had. Iced vanilla latte um yummm, not too sweet, just perfect. And then a focaccia the size of my face and two inch thick like dang! You could cut in half and make it a pizza if you wanted. I mean all that for like $13 is totally worth it. 100% going back.

Eileen O.

Yelp
Found Leavened on Instagram and the more I saw their posts, the more I knew I had to check it out! Simple, bright, modern - I loved the ambiance of the bakery. As Leavened has posted many a times, their Italian on Focaccia sandwich, available at 11 am, has sold out day after day. There's no way it can't be good if it's a hot seller, so I had to try it myself! WOW it's pretty darn good!! The focaccia was unbelievably fresh and the meat and pickle spread on it was delish, it was the perfect combo. For $10, it was well worth the price! Definitely can be a sandwich for 2 to share. It was a bit dense and greasy, but it was well worth the calories. Happy to support another local establishment around time! Welcome home, Leavened!

Evan F.

Yelp
What a great addition to the area! As someone living in the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood, having easy access to a bakery such as this will be welcome as the winter wears on. Being a part of the mixed-use facility they are in should help with a base of nearby folks to help sustain them during these tough COVID-19 times. They have a great selection of coffees and artisan baked goods including fantastic croissants and life-changing focaccia bread. Honestly, the focaccia bread alone could be a meal, especially if used as the bread for a sandwich. I believe they may have some "standard" versions as well as some specials they have available. Outside the glassed-in walls are a set of small two-person tables for outdoor dining...take advantage of those while you can, given Cleveland's unpredictable weather. Prices are on par with other similar type shops, but my wife and I both thought the quality was top notch. Looking forward to our next return trip!

Maeve P.

Yelp
New favorite bakery alert!! The pastries here are so creative, and I found a new fave with the orange-infused cinnamon roll. Their pastries are huge, decadent, and pair well with their coffee selection. I came here to study, and it has a great atmosphere. Tons of natural light, tables, and outlets... I don't think I could find a single thing to dislike here. Parking could potentially be a challenge, but I found a street parking spot right across from the entrance, so no complaints from me. All in all, I think I'll be back very soon!
